This is a true story about something that happened to me last summer. I was spending the holiday(happy) with my family at a beach in the south of England. I was very(interest) in exploring the local area, so one morning I(wake) up early and set off along the quiet road. In my eagerness to discover the local area, I forgot( tell ) my parents where I was going.

It was a hot, sunny morning and I soon felt thirsty, but I was determined to challenge(me) by walking to the highest point. I'm a good walker and so I pushed my way up the hill, although it was quite hard work. At the top, I saw many birds (fly) around their nests(鸟巢). Feeling curious, I left the road and moved towards the nests. Aha, there were some baby birds in the nest. "If I take picture of the baby birds, will I be attacked?" With(butterfly) in my stomach, I held my camera up and pointed it at the birds.

Just then, one of the birds made a loud noise. I was so surprisedI dropped my camera! I didn't have time to worryit, though. To protect their nests, the birds started to fly at me one by one to make me go away. I rushed back down the hill. Near the bottom of the hill, I heard a car engine. It was my mum's car! I jumped in and shut the door, looking at her in panic.   "Go! Go! Go!" I shouted. I spent the rest of the summer saving up for a new camera.

  • 5、My mother left the field of education formally after I was born. However, she did not leave it1. She made learning a2 part of my life. I never watched television, not because I was not allowed to, but because it was more fun writing stories with my mom.

On my first day of kindergarten, I was excited, but3. During snack time that day, I sat quietly and opened my4. Inside, I found a note from my mother written on a napkin (餐巾纸). The note said that she5 me, that she was proud of me and that I was the best kindergartener in the world! Because of that napkin note I spent my first day of kindergarten successfully and many more school days to follow.

There have been many napkin notes since the6 one. There were even napkin notes7 to me in college, far away from my home. Although I changed majors (专业), changed the way I looked at the world, there was one thing that never8 — my mother's encouragement, support and teachings in napkin notes.

This year, my mother9 to go back to school to earn her degree (学位) in teaching. Although I was10of my mother for following her dreams, I wanted her to know that she didn't need a(n)11to make her an excellent teacher.

So I gave her a12for school: a lunch bag filled with her favorite food. She laughed as she13 the lunch bag. Then she pulled out a napkin with14 on it.

As she opened up her "You can do it!" napkin note from me, tears began to run down her face. When her eyes met mine, I saw she15my unspoken message: My mother is, and always has been, a teacher.

  • 6、Any foreigner who has tried to learn Chinese can tell how hard it is to master the tones required to speak and understand. And anyone who has tried to learn to play the violin or other instruments can report similar challenges.

Now researchers have found that people with musical training have an easier time learning Chinese. Writing in the online edition of Nature Neuroscience, researchers from Northwestern University say that both skills draw on the same parts of the brain that help people discover changes in pitch(音高).

One of the study's authors, Nina Kraus, said the findings suggested that studying music ''actually tunes our sensory system''. This means that schools that want children to do well in languages should hesitate before cutting music programs, Dr. Kraus said. She said music training might also help children with language problems.

Mandarin(普通话)speakers have been shown to have a more complex encoding(编码) of pitch patterns in their brains than English speakers do. This is because in Mandarin and other Asian languages, pitch plays a central role. A single-syllable word can have several meanings depending on how it is intoned.

For this study, the researchers looked at 20 non-Chinese speaking volunteers, half with no musical background and half who have studied an instrument for at least six years.

As they were shown a movie, the volunteers also heard an audio tape of the Mandarin word ''mi'' in three of its meanings: squint, bewilder and rice. The researchers recorded activities in their brain stems to see how well they were processing the sounds. Those with a music background showed much more brain activities in response to the Chinese sounds.

The lead author of the study, Patrick C. M. Wong, said it might work both ways. It appears that native speakers of tonal languages may do better at learning instruments.

(1)、When learning Chinese, a foreigner will find _____.
A、it difficult to learn music at the same time B、it not difficult to learn music at the same time C、it hard to master the tones required to speak and understand D、it easy to use the brain to help him discover changes in pitch
(2)、Why does Chinese learning have something to do with music training?
A、Because there is the same difficulty in learning Chinese and music. B、Because skills to learn the two make use of the same parts of the brain. C、Because music training might help people with language study. D、Because people who do well in Chinese study do well in music.
(3)、The underlined word ''intoned'' in the fourth paragraph can be replaced by the word ''_____''.
    A、created B、spelled C、seemed D、pronounced
(4)、What would be the best title of this passage?

  • 9、Many people have wondered why children believe in things like Santa Claus or the Tooth Fairy, thinking that children's minds are easily fooled. However, developmental psychology offers a different perspective.

A study published in Developmental Psychology explores how children react to ideas that go against what they usually think and if they check these ideas against what they expect. This way of checking, known as the "empirical stance," is apparent by the time children reach elementary school.

The study involved nearly 200 children aged 3 to 8 from Chinese schools. Each child was presented with five differently-sized objects made from painted Russian dolls. The children naturally assumed that the smallest doll was the lightest and the largest the heaviest. When asked to identify the heaviest object, most children chose the largest one. An adult then either agreed with the children's choice or made a claim that the smallest doll was the heaviest. The researchers observed whether the children would change their minds or test the adult's claim by comparing the weights of the dolls.

Initially, children seemed to trust the adult's word, with only a small percentage insisting on their original belief. However, when given the opportunity to explore the dolls, elementary school children who had received the surprising claim systematically tested it by comparing the smallest and largest dolls. This exploration allowed them to generate evidence that could deny the adult's claim.

These findings suggest that while children are willing to trust an adult's surprising claims, their acceptance is temporary. By elementary school, they systematically test such claims by seeking new evidence, which they then use to update their beliefs.

The study's implications extend beyond childhood Most adults accept complex concepts, such as the existence of electrons, based on the testimony(证词)of others rather than personal experience.

So while children may learn about the magic of Santa Claus from adults, adults might similarly have something to learn from elementary school children: most of us would do well to adopt an empirical stance more often than we currently do.

(1)、What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A、The theoretical basis of the study. B、The conclusion of the study. C、The significance of the study. D、The methodology of the study.
(2)、Which child's response matches the empirical stance?
A、Taylor believes what the teacher, says no matter what. B、Emma assumes the watermelon is sweet and then tastes it. C、Jordan thinks the earth is flat because his father says so. D、Maya suspects there are monsters living in trees as the story says.
(3)、What lesson could adults learn from children?
A、Learning from their own experience. B、Never trusting anyone. C、Declining complex concepts. D、Counting on others' testimony.
(4)、What is the main purpose of the text?
A、To highlight adults' role in children's education and growth. B、To clarify a misunderstanding about children's learning ability. C、To advocate for a more empirical approach across all ages. D、To guide adults to help children avoid wrong ideas about the world.
  • 10、Parkinson's law states: "Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion." In other words, things become harder to complete when more time is given to complete them as the build-up to the task becomes stressful and frightening.

Parkinson's law is not a scientific principle. Instead, it is simply an observation of a phenomenon many people including scientists have experienced rather than dug into. As first described by CyrilNorthcote Parkinson in a 1955 humor essay published in The Economist, it can explain the expansion of organizations. However, it can also be a helpful way to think about other types of work, including personal productivity.

The complexity of a task tends to grow when more time is distributed for its completion. When you find yourself finishing the task, you might feel a sense of relief but also wonder why the project became so much more of a burden in your mind than it was in real life. The "extra time" that the task requires often isn't related to the task itself — it's mental stress caused by worrying about getting it done.

In Parkinson's original example, a woman's task for the day was just to mail a postcard. As a result of having the entire day to complete the simple task, the amount of work and time required expanded to fill the whole day. The fictional woman spent a half-hour searching for her reading glasses. Writing the postcard took another two hours. More time was spent finding a stamp, writing the address, and walking the postcard to the post office.

One reason why this phenomenon happens lies in how people tend to approach tasks. Research indicates that when people start a new project, they tend to focus on how much time they have available to do it instead of how much time the task would take to complete. While Parkinson's law is a phenomenon that can lead to wasted time and inefficient work, it doesn't have to be a problem if you're aware of it.

(1)、Why does Parkinson's law fail to be a scientific principle?
A、It lacks profound research. B、It serves certain enterprises. C、It has shallow implications. D、It aims to uncover an issue.
(2)、What does paragraph 3 mainly discuss about Parkinson's law?
A、Its present situation. B、Its underlying logic. C、Its mental influence. D、Its unnoticed worth.
(3)、What does Parkinson's original example imply?
A、Looking for glasses didn't matter. B、Mailing a postcard took two hours. C、Categorizing tasks consumed time. D、Task expands to fill available time.
(4)、What might be discussed in the follow-up text?
A、Views on deadline setting. B、Modes of task assignment. C、Difficulties in high outputs. D、Tips for time management.

  • 14、In recent years, advancements in artificial intelligence (AI) have brought both excitement and concerns to various fields. One area where AI is making a profound impact is the medical field, particularly in the domain of diagnostics.

AI-powered diagnostic systems leverage deep learning algorithms to analyze medical images, such as X-rays, MRIs, and CT scans. These algorithms can detect subtle patterns and anomalies that might be missed by human radiologists, potentially leading to earlier and more accurate diagnoses.

However, the integration of AI in medical diagnostics raises complex ethical questions. For instance, who should be held responsible if an AI system misdiagnoses a patient's condition? Should AI algorithms be treated as medical professionals, with legal and liability implications? These questions become even more intricate when considering that AI systems learn from vast datasets of medical information, which might contain biases or inaccuracies.

Furthermore, the adoption of AI diagnostics could impact the role of healthcare professionals. Some argue that AI could enhance doctors' capabilities by providing them with additional insights, while others fear that it might replace human expertise, leading to job losses and a potential decrease in the quality of patient care. • 15、In my life everything was going well until the time I married. I had always been a very optimistic person and I always believed that I could overcome any challenge or win any person's heart with my perseverance. But unfortunately my marriage failed, and that defeat hit me very hard. I went through a very difficult period of time when I had to decide to move house and I couldn't help complaining that life was so cruel to me. I started losing my faith in life and decided to quit completely and withdraw myself from society.

But somewhere inside, I had a deep feeling of serving needy people. That was because in childhood I was inspired by Mother Teresa and the work she was doing. So after three months of suffering, I decided to do community service every weekend to divert my attention. I joined a non-profit organization I used to support financially in my early career.

I was given a project to teach poor children in the suburbs. I started that activity and on the first day when I reached the location, I walked inside a remote village. There I could see people living in very difficult conditions. They had no access to electricity and they lacked proper road connectivity. But they still enjoyed their lives and lived happily with their surroundings.

My interactions with the kids and parents have taught me valuable lessons about learning to celebrate daily gifts of life. Since that project, I have never looked back. I have met some wonderful and beautiful souls in this journey and they have made me believe that we are making changes and touching the lives of many people.

Now, standing before the very person whose requests were repeatedly8, Karen was slightly9. Yet when Karen10 the situation, Pam offered simply, "I can drive you there." Karen was humbled by Pam's11.Thanks to Pam, Karen made it to the rehearsal just in time.

12 that day, Karen thinks of Pam's gesture as more than just a car ride, but an act of13.

"Perhaps I didn't14 that sort of kindness but she decided to extend it15 — that reshaped my understanding of kindness through my life," Karen said.

  • 20、Temperatures are rising, and so are mental health risks

Climate change is increasing heat waves, posing growing threats to health. Extreme heat is becoming a severe challenge across the U.S. and globally, with forecasts suggesting one of the next five years could be the hottest on record. Even survivors may face long-term consequences.

How does extreme heat affect the brain? Dehydration (脱水) in high temperatures thickens blood, making it hard for the heart to supply enough oxygen to the brain. The brain, which uses 20% of the body's energy, requires efficient heat release. In hot, damp conditions, sweating fails to cool the body, potentially causing heat exhaustion or a sudden serious illness, which can lead to nerve-related problems.

Extreme heat also worsens mental health: conditions like depression and anxiety become worse. Furthermore, the medicines used to treat the mental illness and sleeplessness also appear to increase mental health weakness to heat.

Those with existing mental health disorders are weakest. Older adults face accelerated serious mental illness that affects memory. Homeless individuals and outdoor workers such as farmers are particularly at risk, as they often lack access to cooling resources.

Action is urgent. Most heat health plans ignore mental health. These can include public awareness campaigns, such as warning people about the mental health risk of consuming alcohol or other drugs during heat waves. Other interventions include establishing community cooling shelters for heat emergencies and increasing monitoring of mental health patients during heat waves. Only through comprehensive strategies can we reduce the mental health impacts of extreme heat.

    A. Who is most at risk?

    B. The human body works best when at 37℃.

    C. How to identify those in danger during heat waves?

    D. It disturbs sleep, which further harms one's ability to think.

    E. So mental health steps must be added to these heat response plans.

    F. Heat waves cause 1,300 U. S. deaths yearly from heat-related issues.

    G. Research is needed to better understand health outcomes of a warmer world.
