1、I used to watch Lisa from my kitchen window. She seemed so1 as she muscled her way through the crowd of boys on the playground. I watched in2 as she ran circles around the other kids. She3 to shoot jump shots just over their heads and into the net.
I often saw Lisa practice alone, dribbling (运球) and4 over and over again, sometimes until dark. I asked her why she worked so hard. Without a moment of5 she said, "I want to go to college. The only way I can go is to get a6".
One day, I saw her sitting in the grass, head in her arms. I went over and sat down beside her,7 what was the matter. "Oh, nothing." came a8 reply, "I am just too short. My coaches told me I would9 get to play for a top ranked team or much less offered a scholarship". She was10 and I sensed her disappointment. I told her those coaches were11 and they didn't understand the12 of a dream. If she truly wanted a scholarship, nothing could13 her except one thing — attitude.
The next year, Lisa and her team went to the Northern California Championship game, in which she14. And she was offered a scholarship and15 to the college team.

2、Popular people are generally positive, helpful, and fun to be around. . Here are some general tips that will help you become a more likable and popular person:
● Avoid offering help in exchange for approval
Popular people often help others, but being helpful doesn't always make you more popular. Trying to be helpful just to make others like you will backfire (事与愿违). . You'll come across as needy, which isn't attractive.
●
The most popular people are often the ones who hold their friends together. Try to arrange parties and get - togethers where your friends can hang out together. You will also be considered as a more social person.
● Be easygoing
When you are easygoing, your friends will enjoy spending time with you, which may make you more popular. .
Sharing your problems with others is a good thing, but talking about your problems over and over again is annoying and your friends will keep away from you.
● Stop talking about people behind their backs
. When you speak negatively about other people, the person you're talking to can reasonably assume that you would speak negatively about them when they're not around. Even if you attempt to justify your unfriendly behavior by saying "I'm not talking behind anyone's back. I'm just telling the truth." While this may be the case, it is still not an acceptable excuse.
A. Be the glue in your social circle
B. These qualities draw others towards them
C. It's unpopular to talk back when friends are around
D. People who often complain about life have fewer friends
E. It's important to have a positive attitude and avoid constant complaining
F. They will know that you need friendship or approval from them in return
G. Popular people know that talking behind people's backs will cause them to lose friends

3、Between at least 1995 and 2010, I was seen as a crazy man for talking about the "Internet prophecy (预言)." Today, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is no longer a novelty — I even believe it may have existed in its fullness in a very distant and forgotten past! Nevertheless, it is now the topic of the moment.
Although the term "Artificial Intelligence" wascoinedin 1956, its origin began in ancient times with stories of artificial beings with intelligence. Since ancient times, humans have been crazy about building artifacts that could copy human intelligence. For example, in Ancient Greece, there are references to stories of self-acting devices created by skilled workmen, designed for simple tasks, copying basic human actions. These artifacts laid the groundwork for the development of intelligent machines.
Over centuries, the idea of building intelligent machines progressively developed, driven by advances in science and technology. In the 19th century, scientists and inventors such as Charles Babbage and Ada Lovelace made significant contributions to the development of computing and the early concepts of programming. Their ideas paved the way for the creation of machines that could process information logically and perform complex tasks.
It was in the second half of the 20th century that AI, as a scientific subject, began to establish itself. With the coming of modern computers and increasing processing power, scientists started exploring algorithms (算法) and techniques to simulate aspects of human intelligence. The first experiments with expert systems and machine learning opened up new perspectives and possibilities.
After about 60 years of inactivity, in the early years of 21st century, AI is starting to have its moment. The power of machines, combined with the Internet, has made it possible to generate and explore enormous amounts of data (Big Data) using deep learning techniques, based on the use of formal neural (神经的) networks. A range of applications in various fields — including voice and image recognition, natural language understanding, and autonomous cars — has awakened the "giant". It is the rebirth of AI in an ideal era for this purpose. The perfect moment!

4、The Arctic could see summer days with no sea ice as early as next decade, according to a new study out of the University of Colorado Boulder.
Moreover, by accounting for a long-term warming stage in the Pacific, the findings of the study suggest that the first ice-free day in the Arctic could occur over 10 years earlier than previously predicated, closer to 2035 than 2050. The trend remains consistent under all emissions (排放物) from fossil fuels. For example, under a high-emission prediction, the planet's northernmost region could become ice-free even in some winter months.
Sea ice declines have significant impacts on Arctic animals that rely on sea ice for survival, including seals and polar bears. In addition, as the ocean warms up, researchers are concerned that non-native fish could move into the Arctic Ocean. The impact of these invasive species on local ecosystems remains unclear. Sea ice loss also poses a risk to the communities living near the coastal region.
While an ice-free Arctic is unavoidable, future emission level will still determine how often the conditions occur. At an intermediate (中等程度的) emission level, a path the current society is on, the Arctic might become ice-free only during late summer and early fall from August to October. But at the highest emission level, the Arctic could be ice-free for up to nine months by late this century. "This would transform the Arctic into a completely different environment, from a white summer Arctic to a blue Arctic. So even if ice-free conditions are unavoidable, we still need to keep our emissions as low as possible to avoid prolonged ice-free conditions," scientist and researcher Alexandra Jahn said.
"Unlike the ice sheet in Greenland that took thousands of years to build, even if we melt all the Arctic sea ice, if we can then figure out how to take CO2 back out of the atmosphere in the future to reverse (逆转) warming, sea ice will come back within a decade," Jahn stressed.
(1)、According to the new study, when could the Arctic see its first ice-free day?A、Near 2035. B、After next decade. C、By 2050. D、By late this century.(2)、What would happen if the Arctic becomes ice-free?A、There would be no non-native fish in the Arctic. B、Seals and polar bears would lose their habitats. C、The Arctic would become a different white planet. D、The people living nearby would be flooded out.(3)、What determines the frequency of the Arctic becoming ice-free?A、Future emission level. B、The warming stage in the Pacific. C、The local ecosystems. D、Technological level.(4)、What is Jahn's attitude towards the Arctic becoming ice-free?A、Discouraged. B、Supportive. C、Indifferent. D、Positive. -
5、Jeanne Baret may not be as well-known as other explorers, but as the first woman to sail around the globe in the late 18th century, her achievements were no less remarkable.
Baret did not set out to be an explorer. She was born in July 1740 in a rural village in the Burgundy region of France. Her father was an uneducated laborer, and her mother was devoted to raising the family. It is widely believed that Baret had little, if any, formal education. Despite this, she was locally recognized for her expertise in herbalism (草药学) and was known as "the herb woman."
In 1765, Commerson, the famous botanist and naturalist from Burgundy, was invited to join a round-the-world expedition led by a French Navy officer and explorer. Baret was hired to assist comments on in the categorization of his plant specimens (标本). At that time, women were banned from serving aboard French naval ships. The most widely accepted story is that Baret, dressed as a man, managed to board the ship.
The ship sailed from Nantes to Rio de Janeiro in 1766, then to Montevideo where they collected plant specimens. The ship then went south through the Strait of Magellan and reached Tahiti. It is believed that Baret's true identity was revealed there but she remained on board nevertheless to continue her scientific work. Her careful documentation of up to 6,000 plant species, some of which were previously unknown to science, significantly enriched the botanical knowledge of the era.
This was not just a journey around the world; it was an expedition that reshaped perceptions (看法) of women's capabilities and roles in scientific discovery and adventure.
(1)、What do we know about Jeanne Baret's early life?A、She came from a well-off family. B、She was naturally curious in exploration. C、She gained recognition for curing patients. D、She hardly got any schooling.(2)、What is Baret's barrier to joining the voyage?A、Female identity. B、Lack of working experience. C、Poor physical strength. D、Limited knowledge.(3)、What impact did the expedition have on society at that time?A、It promoted French naval reform in many aspects. B、It confirmed women's role in scientific discovery and adventure. C、It diversified the local plant species and enriched the botanical knowledge. D、It changed people's views on women's ability and role in scientific exploration.(4)、Which of the following can best describe Baret?A、Reliable and skillful. B、Capable and careful. C、Gifted and determined. D、Ambitious and cooperative. -

With the improvement of life standards, there are a (grow) number of people travelling each year, is a good way to enjoy life. Some people would like to take a package tour (包价旅游), while others would rather travel on their own. I prefer the latter, because I feel that it's much more convenient and (cheap) than taking a package tour as I (do) before.
First of all, travelling on my own, I can arrange my time and route (free). For example, when I get to someplace I like, I choose to stay longer and don't have to think about others.
Secondly, the schedule of package tours is relatively tight and tourists can only stay very short time in tourist attractions. is difficult to enjoy every landscape carefully.
Thirdly, in order to earn money, some travel agencies may persuade tourists (buy) things. In meantime, travelling on my own is much cheaper.
Finally, the trip is designed to relax. However, many people say that package tours are not to make them feel really (relax), but even more tired.
On the whole, I feel like (travel) on my own, which is more convenient.

18、Many people tend to bring electronic products when travelling, including me. Last year I just1 my summer vacation by bringing along a modern convenience: the iPad.2 looking at nature, I checked my e-mail. Instead of reading great novels, I stuck to reading online newspapers each morning. And that was the problem: I was acting3 I were still in the office. My body was on vacation but my4 wasn't.
So this year I made up my mind to try something5 : getting away from the Internet. I knew it wouldn't be easy, since I'm not good at self-control. But I was6 . I started by7 the iPad to my wife. Then, a stroke of luck: The mobile phone8 at our cabin was worse than in the past. I was trapped in a small circle and9 to carry out my plan. Largely10 from e-mail and my favorite newspaper websites, I had little way to11 the world. I had no choice but to do what I had planned to do all along: read books.
With determination and the strong support of my wife, I succeeded in my vacation12 against the Internet. I finally realized that it was I, of course, not the iPad, that led to the problem.
I knew I had13 when we passed a Starbucks and my wife asked if I wanted to stop to use the Wi-Fi. "Don't need it," I said.14 , as we return to work, a test begins: Can I continue when I'm back at work? I had no15 of giving up my iPad completely. But I hope to resist the temptation (诱感) to use it every five minutes.

20、I'd say I quarrel with my parents a lot. Throughout high school, I was always jealous of some of my friends who didn't seem to have those problems at home, but I've come to see over the years that no one's situation is perfect.
Part of the reason I work all week during my break, in addition to the money, of course, is to be out of the house to avoid continuing quarrels. At work, I eat lunch with my friend Krysta every day, but the best days are when our favourite workmate, Lucy, is on her lunch break at the same time as us. Her funny way of storytelling always has us laughing happily, and although she is almost old enough to be our mom, she feels more like a best friend.
A few weeks ago, however, there was a change in our lunch conversation, and the story she told had us in real tears instead of our usual tears of laughter. A more serious topic had come up, and she sat us down to explain the importance of forgiveness (宽恕), especially when it came to our parents. Telling stories of her troubled relationship with her mother, she changed my whole outlook on life and my feelings towards my parents. She reminded us that no matter how much resentment (怨恨) we're feeling in a moment of anger, we have to be thankful for the support they provide and learn to forgive everything else.
This week I've spent my break at home, having very small quarrels and lots of quality time together with my parents. Sometimes you need a reminder to make you realize how important it is to let go of past resentment and work to repair broken relationships. My workmate's moving stories not only brought me to tears in the break room at work that day but served as that wake-up call as well.
