A significant proportion of the American populace within the working-age demographic are encountering challenges in meeting the financial demands associated with health care, as per a recent comprehensive evaluation.
This study, which is the inaugural edition of the Health Care Affordability Survey conducted by the Commonwealth Fund, reveals that a substantial 51 percent of adults falling within the age bracket of 19 to 64 years have expressed that affording health care for themselves and their family is either exceedingly challenging or moderately difficult. This observation encompasses 43 percent of individuals who are beneficiaries of health insurance provided by their employers and an even higher 57 percent who have secured health insurance through a marketplace or have opted for an individual plan.
Additionally, it is noteworthy that nearly one-half of the working-age adults who are under the Medicare program and 45 percent of those who are recipients of Medicaid also admit to facing hardships in covering their health care expenses. ____It is particularly striking that a majority, specifically 65 percent, of working-age adults have indicated that the escalation in the cost of various goods and services over the past year has had a detrimental impact on their capacity or that of their family to manage health care expenses.
The aforementioned survey, which is based on a sample that is representative of the nation and comprises nearly 7,900 individuals who are 19 years of age or older, was carried out from the mid-point of April through the month of July in the current year. This survey follows on the heels of another analysis conducted by the research entity known as KFF, which demonstrated an upward trend in the costs associated with health insurance for employer-sponsored plans as well as an increase in the contributions made by workers towards these plans in the year 2023.
The newly disseminated analysis has further unearthed that 38 percent of the individuals who participated in the survey identified cost as the primary factor that led them or a family member to either forgo or postpone the receipt of necessary health care services or the procurement of prescribed medication within the last 12 months. This includes 29 percent of those who are under the protection of employer-based coverage, 37 percent who are insured through individual and marketplace health plans, 42 percent who are covered by Medicare, and 39 percent who are recipients of Medicaid.
Furthermore, it is observed that more than six-tenths of the individuals who are devoid of any form of health insurance have reported that they or a family member have had to delay or forgo medical care due to financial constraints. Among all those who have reported such instances of skipping or delaying care, a considerable 57 percent have stated that a health issue has consequently deteriorated.
(1)、 How does the article present Americans' health care payment situation?A、By citing data. B、By giving examples. C、By giving reasons. D、By making comparisons.(2)、 What leads to most working-age Americans' difficulty in paying health care costs?A、Their heavy debt. B、Unemployment. C、Higher cost of living. D、Higher health care payment.(3)、 What may the underlined phrase in the fourth paragraph mean?A、Declined. B、Climbed up. C、Remained stable. D、Kept uncertain.(4)、 What may happen to those who lacked any type of health insurance?A、They may get worse if they have health problems. B、They are sure to obtain help from the government. C、They may have to skip or delay any health problems. D、They may not get affected with any diseases. -
2、阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
Electronic waste, or e-waste, has reached levels that cannot be continued. More efforts are needed to take precious metals from abandoned laptops and smartphones. Research shows that over 57 million tons of e-waste was created worldwide in 2021 and people are frustrated about the lack of options to recycle their tech.
Building a low-carbon economy will depend on battery technology for electric vehicles and energy storage. Taking the elements from used batteries will be an environmental necessity. Lithium-ion (锂离子) batteries also contain cobalt (钴) and copper (铜), but as mining for these metals creates poisonous pollution that can ruin the environment, so too can battery recycling if not done properly. It's a problem that needs to be solved quickly.
Another strong pressure in mining e-waste for recycled materials is that supplies could stop entirely. Up to 30 different elements are used in smartphones, and six of them are predicted to run out in the next century.
"Developing a circular economy where minerals used in tech devices are saved and repurposed could help us to bypass supply chain issues in the future while also helping to reduce environmental impacts," said RSC president Tom Welton. "It is essential that governments and businesses urgently do more to deal with the world's growing e-waste crisis and ease the worry on supply chains. "
The US generates more than six million tons of e-waste each year and recycles only15 per cent. So there is a huge need to increase and regulate recycling instead of shipping waste abroad, where it is taken apart or made into pieces, releasing poison that can expose workers, including children, to diseases like cancer. Vast quantities are simply burned or buried in landfill to pollute the air, soil and water.
Electronic equipment is forecast to generate nearly 75 million metric tons of e-waste annually by 2030—almost double what was created in 2014. Less than 20per cent of global e-waste is currently recycled and that needs to change.
(1)、 What's the author's attitude towards the future supplies of certain elements?A、Concerned. B、Satisfied. C、Objective. D、Uncertain.(2)、 What does Tom Welton suggest?A、Regulating local recycling. B、Boosting efforts to take metals. C、Increasing global e-waste recycling. D、Developing a circular economy for tech minerals.(3)、 Why does the author mention the US e-waste in the fifth paragraph?A、To show the focus on the problem from the government. B、To make a further prediction about worsening problems. C、To illustrate the seriousness of the problem. D、To find a solution to the problem.(4)、 What does the passage mainly talk about?A、Mining's environmental impact. B、Lack of recycling options for tech devices. C、Need for a circular economy in tech devices. D、Growing e-waste crisis and supply chain effects. -
3、阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。As a mushroom scientist, you are vastly outnumbered, with estimates suggesting that there are between 2. 2 million and 3. 8 million species of fungi (真菌), the majority of which are yet to be identified. However, professionals in the field are not alone in their efforts to uncover new species. An enthusiastic community of amateurs has emerged, bridging the gap between professionals and non-professionals. These amateurs have even made significant discoveries. One such amateur is Taylor Lockwood, a 74-year-old mushroom enthusiast and professional photographer.
In 1984, while living on the Mendocino coast of California, Taylor Lockwood developed a fascination with mushrooms. "Outside my cottage were these amazing mushrooms," he says. "And it was as if these mushrooms looked at me and said, ‘Taylor, go out and tell the world how pretty we are. '" Lockwood answered their call and purchased camera equipment to capture their true nature. His passion for photographing mushrooms was so intense that he would even dig holes next to the mushrooms to get the perfect angle for his shots.
In the Monongahela National Forest, Taylor Lockwood discovered an unusual mushroom that looked like tiny fingers wearing off-white gloves. Upon deeper investigation, fungi researcher Amy Rossman confirmed that it was a "hazel glove" mushroom, which is a rare find. "Mushrooms are not like plants," Rossman says. "They don't come up at the same time every year, and so sometimes it can be decades between when a fungus fruits. " Rossman says that's why it's so valuable to have people like Taylor Lockwood searching through the forest with a trained eye.
A few years ago, Taylor Lockwood realized that still photos weren't sufficient, so he chose to create time-lapse (延时拍摄的) videos of mushrooms. "When I do time-lapse, I see so much life happening around the mushrooms—insects, worms and other small creatures interacting with them," he says. Lockwood's love for art is evident in his approach to filming mushrooms over time. Although he appreciates the scientific aspect of his work, he identifies himself as an artist at heart.
(1)、 What can we learn about mushroom amateurs from paragraph 1?A、They keep close track of the growth of fungi. B、They help identify new species of mushroom. C、They replace professional scientists in the field. D、They classify the majority of mushroom species.(2)、 What inspired Lockwood to photograph mushrooms?A、His desire for knowledge. B、His curiosity about nature. C、The beauty of nearby mushrooms. D、The appeal of outdoor photography.(3)、 Which of the following best describes Lockwood according to paragraph 3?A、Skilled and observant. B、Focused and flexible. C、Talented and optimistic. D、Organized and responsible.(4)、 Why did Lockwood decide to make time-lapse videos of mushrooms?A、To improve his photography techniques. B、To capture dynamic life in an artistic way. C、To collect biological data for deeper research. D、To use a new approach to scientific studies. -

Kris and Robin are sisters who grew up in Wisconsin. They work together and serve together.
In 2017, Hurricane Harvey struck with strong force across Florence, bringing fierce winds and record-breaking rainfall. The city was destroyed by the storm's intensity, leading to widespread damage and flooding. Emergency services worked tirelessly to rescue those trapped by the rising floodwaters, while power failure left entire neighborhoods in darkness.
In the face of such misfortune, both of Kris and Robin felt depressed and helpless, yet eager to assist. Upon discovering Convoy of Hope's volunteer program, they didn't hesitate to sign up. Soon after, they were invited to training, marking the start of their mission to serve together in this fighting.
However, their initial response to the arrangement was filled with anxiety for Kris. "I am kind of nervous before heading out. I wonder if I could remember my training?" said Kris Logemann, her voice with uncertainty. "Don't worry! You see the staff do such a great job. They are incredibly supportive to us and will provide guidance and reassure every step of the way." Robin comforted. She also added, "I am right there for you, too, Kris, we are in it together, and we'll make it just like before."
Robin Melcher remembered the first few rescues she and her sister went on. "We were helping a woman who had just lost her husband," said Kris. "We were taking things out of her house, but also holding her hand and loving her. The ability to do that... it's just really cool." "Obviously we love it because we come back," added Kris.
Full of power, Kris and Robin put their whole hearts into the training. During the Convoy of Hope's detailed training program, they learned about disaster response, safety procedures, and psychological first aid. Through hands-on practice and team-building exercise, they prepared physically and mentally for the tasks ahead. As Kris and Robin continued their volunteer work, they were faced with one of their most heart-struck and unforgettable challenges.

Much of Earth is unexplored. An ocean census (普查) hopes to change that.
"Earth" has always been an odd choice of name for the third planet from the Sun. After all, two-thirds of its surface is covered not by earth at all, but by oceans of water.
Because humans are land animals, most of the Earth remains under-explored. Marine (海洋的) biologists think the oceans might host more than 2 million species of marine animals, of which they have so far identified perhaps a tenth.
A new initiative hopes to change this. Launched in London on April 27th, Ocean Census aims to discover 100, 000 new species of marine animal over the coming decade. It is backed by Nekton, a British marine-research institute, and the Nippon foundation, Japan's biggest charitable foundation. Its first ship, the Norwegian icebreaker Kronprins Haakon, set sail on April 29th, bound for the Barents Sea.
The initiative is happening for two reasons. One is that the longer scientists wait, the less there will be to identify. Climate change is heating the oceans, as well as making them more acidic (酸的) as carbon dioxide dissolves goes into the water. Already around half the world's coral reefs (珊瑚)—thought to be home to around 25% of all ocean species—have been lost. Oliver Steeds, Nekton's founder, says that one of Ocean Census's priorities will be identifying species thought to be in the greatest danger from climate change. The second reason is technological. Marine biologist s find about 2, 000 new species a year, a rate hardly changed since Darwin's day. Ocean Census is betting it can go faster.
Exactly what the new effort might turn up is impossible to predict. But history suggests it will be fruitful. Half a century ago scientists discovered hot vents (喷口) on the sea bed. These days, such vents are one possible candidate for the origin of all life on Earth. There are more practical benefits, too. Many drugs, for example, come originally from biological substance. An ocean full of unidentified life will almost certainly prove a rich mine from which to mine more.
(1)、Why is "Earth" an odd choice of name for the third planet from the Sun?A、Its climate is changing rapidly. B、Humans have not explored much of it. C、Most of its surface is covered by water. D、It hosts a large number of marine animals.(2)、What can we infer from paragraph 5?A、The rate of discovering new species won't change. B、The new initiative will mainly focus on coral reefs. C、Climate change has a great impact on marine species. D、Scientists have identified nearly all the species in the ocean.(3)、What might be the potential benefits of the Ocean Census according to the last paragraph?A、It may result in a reduction in overfishing. B、It may lead to the discovery of new drugs. C、It may contribute to the advancement of technology. D、It may prove the oceans are our life-support system.(4)、What's the best title for the text?A、The Endangered Planet B、Reducing Sea Pollution: A Global Initiative C、How to Protect the Oceans? D、The Misnamed Earth: Exploring the Ocean's Secrets
