  • 5、Body language, sometimes called "non-verbal communication", is more important than you might think. Suitable body language can help you build trust with others. So use the following magic body language to build trust with others.

    Put your phone down

Keeping eye contact when someone is talking will help build trust because it shows interest, but that's hard to do if you keep staring at your phone. It says, "I don't want to look at emails—you're important." Building human ties makes it easier to trust people and know more about them.

You might only be crossing your arms and legs, because you're cold, but that position closes you off. You're unknowingly communicating something negative because you've put your body in a way that is a defense mechanism(机制). It blocks any basis for building trust. Make sure your body looks open to hear others' thoughts.

    Smile and nod

That indicates you're interested in what the person is saying. Just don't be too cheesy (虚伪的)—overdoing the positive reaction will make you seem less sincere.

    Don't sit behind a desk

Sitting behind a desk creates another block. For example, sitting at a table with students can encourage them to be more active during class if you want them to tell you if there's something they don't understand. Try not to have a big barrier between you.

    Limit your note taking

Sometimes notes are necessary when you're talking to a co-worker. If you're constantly writing down what the other person says, that person could start feeling "Why are they writing that down?" So don't let it get in the way of your eye contact if you have to.

    A. Listen with your eyes.

    B. Uncross your arms and legs.

    C. Don't communicate something negative.

    D. Smiling and nodding can be signs of greetings to others.

    E. But taking notes too often makes the other person feel uncomfortable.

    F. Nodding and smiling while someone is talking shows you're listening.

    G. It could make the person you're talking to put his or her own walls up.

  • 6、Disneyland's opening day, July 17, 1955, was a nightmare. Rides broke down. Restaurants ran out of food and drink. Long lines formed at bathrooms. All in front of a national audience of 90 million, Disney's opening day would be known in Disney history as Black Sunday. But Disneyland's story actually twenty years earlier with what Walt Disney called "Daddy's Day".

On Saturdays in the 1930s and 1940s, Disney would take his two daughters to ride the Griffith Park merry-go-round. Disney saw the amusement parks they often visited as dirty and unimaginative places run by unfriendly employees. He thought he could do better.

In 1939, he asked two employees to work on a plan for an amusement park. The pair spent six weeks visiting parks around the country and came up with a proposal (提议).

In 1948, Disney laid out his plans for a Mickey Mouse Park, which included a town square, a city hall, a fire station and a movie theater.

By 1952 the idea had grown into a 16-acre park proposal that he presented to Burbank, California official. However, the City Council didn't accept the proposal.

Disney counted the refusal as a fortunate setback. By now, his dreams for a theme park had gone far beyond the space available in Burbank. He examined locations throughout Southern California. 160-acre land, 22 miles south of Los Angeles, was soon chosen.

Groundbreaking took place in July 1954, and Disney walked the site daily to offer direction and encouragement.

Disneyland wasn't ready on opening day, but Disney decided to open the gates anyway to the media and invited guests. After the madness of opening day, newspaper headlines wrote: "Walt's Nightmare". The media foresaw a quick and early end.

However, the public didn't listen. Visitors arrived in droves, and within weeks Disneyland was a success. Within two months, the park had welcomed its millionth visitor. Sixty years later, Disneyland's popularity continues to grow, and shows no signs of slowing down with total overall attendance topping 700 million.

(1)、What made Disney come up with the idea of building a park?

    (3)、In the media's opinion, Disneyland ________.

  • 7、A lot of people ask this question: "Why is body language so important?" Studies have shown that in the process of communication, non-verbal expression has 65% to 93% more influence than actual text. This means that "how to say" is more important than "what to say". Of course, this does not mean that you don't need to do preparation for your interviews, nor does it mean that you can take any short cuts. On the contrary, this means that you have more things to pay attention to and prepare for.

In the real workplace, body language is much more important than you think. Without proper body language, you may find yourself trapped in a circle where you can't integrate with the external environment, not to mention the difficulties in the absence of body language in the workplace.

"People can often make inferences from actions, and the results of these inferences directly affect lives: for example. who will be employed and who will be promoted."Academician Amy Cuddy said in a TV talk show. She also said that "our body language will also affect our perception ( 感知, 看法)of ourselves. When you try to make more authoritative actions, your brain will inadvertently(不经意地)receive signals and actually create an idea that you are more authoritative, so that you have more confidence in yourself".

Therefore, before interviews or important meetings, try not to lean on any object or have a hunched back. Instead, you should try to keep your body relaxed. You can even stand with a relatively authoritative posture (姿势) -of course, you may need to do these things in the bathroom or places where no one could see you.

Body language plays a crucial role in your job interviews, careers, and everyday life. Paying attention to body language could make strong impacts on your behavior, which could help you achieve better results. So, every time you are nervous or feel that you can't do it, stretch your body, smile, and tell yourself "Fake it till you become it!"

(1)、What does Paragraph 1 mainly tell us?
A、What we say in a conversation is not so important. B、Practicing body language is a short cut to success. C、We should attach great importance to body language. D、Body language carries 93% of conversation messages.
(2)、According to Amy Cuddy, why is body language important for us?
A、It decides whether we are promoted. B、It influences people's impression of us. C、It makes us look more authoritative. D、It helps people understand who we are.
(3)、What does the underlined word "hunched" possibly mean?
    A、Broken down. B、Tied behind. C、Bent forward. D、Straightened up.
(4)、Who might be the intended readers of the passage?
A、New arrivals in the workplace. B、Body language researchers. C、Working adults to be promoted. D、Viewers of a TV talk show.
  • 8、This Family Keeps Their Community Warm by Cutting Firewood for Those in Need

Washington is home to lots of trees — it is the Evergreen State, after all — and it has lots of fireplaces and wood-burning heaters too. But what if you lived there and couldn't cut wood or couldn't afford to pay someone to do it? Luckily, Shane McDaniel and his twin sons, Harrison and Henry McDaniel, are happy to help. The three men cut truckloads of wood, then give it to those in need.

The idea actually started as a father-son relationship project, Shane told msn.com. "I cut wood with my dad. He just loved doing it," said Shane. He wanted to pass along that feeling, so he and the twins spent the summer cutting. The result was a great wall of wood piled up (堆积) around their house. To buy that much it would cost about $10,000.

It was too much for the McDaniels to use themselves, and when the weather turned cold that November, Shane started thinking of others. He posted online: "If you are in need of firewood (柴火) and cannot afford it, please personal message me! If you know someone who burns wood, please help me and my boys make sure no one goes cold in our neighborhood."

The response was immediate. One man offered to donate a wood-burning stove. Others raced over to Shane's house with more wood. One woman, noticing the photo of the McDaniels, started to feel warm in other ways: "I don't need the wood. But I am truly happy for what you have done!"

Single mom Katelyn Ticer, 29, and her four-year-old daughter depended on a wood-burning stove as their only way of heat, so it was so good to receive a truckload of firewood from the McDaniels. "To get that much wood brought me to tears," she told msn.com. "So much stress and worry is off my shoulders. I couldn't be more thankful."

Shane is ready to help more people. "Giving is the reward," he said. "It has nothing to do with how well it's received; it's about how much it's needed."

(1)、Why did Shane and his twin sons cut the wood?
A、Because Shane just wanted to pass along the feeling that he cut with his father. B、Because Shane had nothing to do. C、Because Shane thought this was a good way to know more his sons. D、Because Shane and his twin sons liked cutting the wood.
(2)、How did Shane help his neighbors?
A、He paid someone to cut the wood. B、He gave wood to those in need. C、He bought stoves to those in need. D、He raised $10,000 for poor neighbors.
(3)、What happened after Shane posted the message online?
A、Many people came to his house to get wood. B、He received a lot of gifts from his neighbors. C、A lot of wood piled up around his house. D、Some people quickly offered to help.
(4)、What did Shane think of helping others?
A、Helping is not giving but receiving. B、Helping others is helping ourselves. C、Being needed drives us to give. D、God helps those who help themselves.

How to Adjust (适应) to a New School

School is a place where a child learns to succeed. When you go to a new school, you might worry that you don't know anyone. You worry that you might get lost, or the teachers are strict. Here are some ways to help you adjust to a new school.

    Getting to Know the School

Before you start the school, go with your parents to visit the school.

    Preparing for the First Day

Start your first day of school with a good night's sleep. Being well rested will help remove (去除) any nervousness you may feel. Try to get at least 8 to 9 hours of sleep if you're between 7 and 11 years old.

    Leave early for school.

Make sure you set aside enough time in the morning to get to school. Arriving early may also give you a chance to chat with a few other students and hopefully make a few new friends.

Take part in activities. Sign up for activities like sports or chess. This will get you into small groups with people who have the same interests as yours. You might even be able to teach some other kids about how to do something.

    A. Making Friends

    B. But adjusting to a new school can be difficult.

    C. You don't want to rush into your classroom after the bell rings.

    D. Find out where your classroom is, as well as other important places.

    E. This will also give you a chance to show your skills at a sport or other activities.

    F. Learning the rules of the school will help you adjust to it and will keep you out of trouble.

    G. Go shopping for your supplies (日用品) and make sure you have them all ready to take to school.

  • 15、There are two kinds of people: those who like to pack up leftovers as soon as dinner is over, and those who let leftovers sit out for a few hours so they can cool down.

However, both leaving leftovers out for a long period of time and adding hot items to the fridge can cause problems.

Whether you should immediately put food in the fridge or let it sit out to cool depends on its temperature. Dangerous bacterial (细菌的) growth happens between 41 and 135 degrees F. Potentially harmful bacteria grows most rapidly at these temperatures.

Placing lots of hot food in the fridge can raise the temperature of the fridge into this danger zone. Fridge temperatures should always be set below 40 degrees F. This may help the food get out of the danger zone as fast as possible.

However, there's no harm in putting hot food directly into the fridge if you need to. If you are a forgetful person, or if you won't be around to store the food after it has cooled enough, go ahead and put it in the fridge. Your fridge can handle the heat and get the food cooled quickly.

Food should never stay out at room temperature for more than two hours. Leftovers can become breeding grounds (滋生地) for dangerous bacteria if they're left out too long and can make people sick.

"It is OK to leave the food cooling outside before you hit the two-hour mark," says Serena Poon, nutritionist of Le Cordon Bleu's Grand Diploma training program. "In fact, the sooner you can get your leftovers in the fridge, the better."

(1)、Which temperature most contributes to the growth of harmful bacteria?
    A、Below 40 degrees B、Between 39~40 degrees F. C、Between 41~135 degrees F. D、Above 135 degrees F.
(2)、What is the author's attitude towards putting hot food directly into the fridge?
    A、Unclear. B、supportive. C、Worried. D、Unconcerned.
(3)、What does Serena Poon suggest doing about the leftovers?
A、Dividing them into small parts. B、Storing them in the fridge right away. C、Waiting until they cool down completely outside. D、Leaving them sitting at room temperature for two hours.
(4)、What is the best title for the text?
A、When to Pack up Leftovers B、How to Prevent Bacterial Growth C、To Cool Food Outside or in the Fridge D、A Good Idea to Store Food in the Fridge

A doctor told me at a young age that I would likely never graduate from high school due to my severe hearing loss and my extremely slow speech development. I found the courage to work hard in school and be active in sports and other activities despite wearing hearing aids and living with a 70% hearing loss. By the time I was college-age, I started losing my night vision. I decided to go away to college 300 miles from home. I obtained my bachelor' s degree and graduated with honors. Even though I had terrible hearing loss and was beginning to lose my sight at night, I found the courage to begin a professional career.

After earning my MBA degree, I accepted a position with Kellogg in the Corporate Affairs Department. When I was working on my MBA degree, I found the courage to ask someone successful despite facing similar challenges to mentor(指导)me. He encouraged me to consider Kellogg as he knew the company was committed to diversity and inclusion(包容). I nervously started my new career, because my vision loss had progressed significantly in the past few years. I am thankful to have a mentor that encouraged me and I am thankful I found the courage to apply for a position with Kellogg.

While Kellogg fosters a supportive, encouraging environment, it still takes courage for me to require what I need to make sure I am successful in my career. I need courage to speak up and ask for suitable accommodations to do my job. I also have to ask for assistance navigating through unfamiliar areas. I have found that everyone at Kellogg is always more than willing to take my requests into account.

Even though I face daily challenges, I have so much to be grateful for. We often face difficulties we cannot control, but we can be courageous in order to face adversity and address challenges.
