How to apply for high school scholarships

Here's a step-by step guide to applying for scholarships as a high school student. 

Make a list. Whether you're a high school junior or senior, the first step to earning col-legs scholarships is making a list of available opportunities. Research scholarship opportunities, and make a list of those you're suitable for.  So you know which scholarship you need to apply for first. 

Prepare your materials. Some scholarship applications only require basic information. But others include lots of paperwork.  you should gather all your materials ahead of time so you do't have to waste time looking for documentation. You might not know what each application needs before you start, but there are some good basics materials to have on hand, for example, transcripts (成绩单), community service hours, recommendation letters and so on. . 

Fill out the applications. You'll spend much time filling out your name, date of birth, and contact information. , it can easily overlook stall errors and wrong spelling so make sure to double check everything before you hand in it. You don't want your application to be rejected just because you forgot a page of your transcripts or left a form field blank. 

. I you've thought ahead and applied for a bunch of scholarships during your junior year, you may think it's time to sit back and relax. However, there are plenty of scholar-ships that are only available to graduating high school seniors, so you can't be finished quite yet. Remember that there are many awards for college students, so keep looking every year.

Scientists have designed a new machine—a robot which looks exactly like the famous scientist Albert Einstein. It can recognize and respond to human emotions (情感). The robot is made of special material that allows it to change facial expressions. The material that makes up the robot's face is so detailed that it looks like real human skin.

The robot's designers chose Einstein, the Nobel Prize winner, because he was one of the greatest scientists of all time. They also chose Einstein because his face is very well known and he appear ‘loveable'.

Dr. Hanson, who designed the robot, explained that it was important to develop machines that know what human beings are feeling.

The robot uses computer software that helps it to understand hundreds of human expressions such as sadness, anger, fear and happiness. It can also recognize a person's age, and whether they are male or female. Mr. Movellan, who designed the software, said that in the future the robot could be in museums to help people from different cultures to understand one another.

We were driving from Los Angeles to Dallas，running low on gas somewhere in New Mexico and figured we'd see a gas station soon enough to fill up．

But that didn't happen and we realized we wouldn't make it to the next town．So my daughter made up a sign that read"Low on gas．Can u help?" and held it outside her window in the hopes that a driver in the next lane would notice it and stop．

There weren't too many vehicles passing us either at the time．It was a lonely stretch of road and about 3：30 pm on a weekday．A suburban was driving along happily in the neighboring lane ahead of us．We caught up with it in the hopes the driver would notice the sign．After a brief expression of confusion on his face，he seemed to have noticed the sign and slowed down to pull over．We pulled over right behind him．

He was friendly and was eager to help us．At first he thought we didn't have enough money to buy gas，so he offered to buy us gas at the next town Roswell that was about 10 miles away!

When we explained our predicament of not having enough gas to get to Roswell，he said his farm was about 1 0 minutes away and they had a gas pump there，so if we could give him 20 minutes，he would head back there，get a can of gas and fill up our tank for us．

We could not believe our good fortune! There not being any cell phone reception for either of us in the area, we had just hoped that whoever stopped to help would be kind enough to call AAA when they got to Roswell and we would just wait it out for them to help us．

We were filled with gratefulness for the kindness of strangers such as this person as we waited for him to return．Sure enough，he was back with the can and quickly filled our tank．He refused to take payment for the gas．Tears flowed，as did our endless appreciation．

You may have heard that bats are to blame for many disease outbreaks in recent years, including COVID-19 and SA RS. But how exactly does a disease spread from bats to humans? And with so many diseases coming from bats, you would think that bats would be sick all the time. It turns out this isn't the case and it's likely because of the way that bats' immune (免疫)systems work.

Bats have very active immune systems to protect their cells from viruses. When a bat's body notices a virus, a protein (蛋白质)is released (释放)that sends a signal to the bat's cells to keep the virus out. In response, viruses reproduce very quickly to try to get into the cells before this immune reaction triggers (触发).Although the bats don^'t get sick, these rapidly increasing viruses can jump to animals with slower immune systems and can quickly cause serious infections.

At the same time, bats are great disease carriers. Bats live in large crowded places—a perfect setting for viruses to spread. In addition, the average bat lives for around 30 years, which is a long time that an infected bat can spread the disease around its environment.

The question remains: Why are so many diseases spreading from bats to humans? Put simply, that problem may be on us. As the number of humans on Earth has increased, there are more chances for bats and humans to have contact with each other. People have taken over large areas of bats' natural habitats due to urban development and the cutting down of trees. This leaves the bats with no choice but to live closer to us.

Even though bats can harbor dangerous diseases, we can't blame them for getting us sick. It is only because of bats' strong immune systems that they can carry such deadly illnesses. By studying bats, we may find ways to develop new treatments. However, the only way to do that is to protect the natural habitats of these extraordinary creatures.

Turning Red

Turning Red is a Pixar cartoon about the pains of growing up as a girl, but it is unique in lots of ways: this is Pixar's first film to be directed solely by a woman, the first to be set in Canada. The main character is Meilin, a hard-working student who transforms into a huge red panda whenever she is stressed. Turning Red is based on the experiences of its director, Domee Shi.

Once again, Martin Scorsese has told a true story of greed and ambition. It reveals brutal crime and criticizes abuse of power. Adapted by Eric Roth from the non-fiction book by David Grann, Killers of the Flower Moon examines the murders of several members of the Osage tribe in the 1920s.

"Here you go," Melanie said, handing Ava a pink envelope.

"Thanks." Ava said. "But what is it?"

"An invitation to my pool party. It's Saturday at two. There will be a lot of fun things to do. You are going to love it so much. Do come, please." Melanie kept talking but Ava wasn't listening.

The words "pool party" echoed (回响) through her mind. Ava had a secret she didn't even tell her best friend Melanie—Ava couldn't swim. Every time she tried to learn, she'd wind up with water up her nose and she'd be out of the pool as quickly as possible.

"You're coming, right?" Melanie said

"Huh?" Ava jumped.

"Do you think you could come a little early? I could use your help inflating (使充气) the floating basketball hoops (篮筐) and the ball. And I will need you to help me set the tables."

Ava didn't know what to say. Melanie was one of her best friends. She couldn't miss her party. But she didn't want the whole school to find out she couldn't swim. That would be too embarrassing. "I think I might be busy this Saturday," Ava said, lowering her head. She saw the disappointment on Melanie's face. "Maybe I could stop by for a little while, but I definitely wouldn't have time to swim."

Ava spent the rest of the school day trying to avoid Melanie's questions about what she had to do on Saturday and why she couldn't stay for the whole party. Ava felt awful. That night she asked her parents to ground (不准出门) her or make other plans so she couldn't go to Melanie's party.

"Ava, this is silly," her mother said. "Melanie is your best friend. She won't care that you can't swim." Ava wasn't so sure.

"Just be honest with Melanie. She will understand you," her father said.

If you have the chance to go back to ancient China and ask  educated man what his biggest dream was, he would tell you that he wants to become a zhuang yuan, a title  (give) to the scholar  came first in the highest imperial examination.

Last year while I was in Madrid, Spain, my back hurt. So I went to the local hospital for an examination.

No sooner had she told me this than I realized the 14 of the misunderstanding. We all had a 15 , although I must admit that I felt rather stupid as well.

This is the season for holiday travel! As one of the busiest times of the year approaches, many of us are preparing for a vacation with our families and friends.  Not to mention, there's often lots of indulging (放纵) between now and New Year's and the last thing any of us wants is to pack on extra weight. 

⒈Walk everywhere.

Instead of taking buses, try to walk whenever possible. This is one of my favorite things to do when traveling, even if I'm going somewhere familiar.  And you're fitting in extra exercise as a bonus. To give yourself an extra boost (促进), always take the stairs instead of the elevator. And don't get on those moving sidewalks in the airport!

For bonus points:  Do a bit of research to find a scenic spot for the whole family to enjoy. Not only will you boost your bum, but a change of scenery is also a great way to bond with your loved ones and experience something new.

G. Here are some tips for staying fit while you're on the go this holiday season.

Scientists have done a lot of research on sleep. They've shown that sleeplessness can lead to both weight gain and poor performance in school. Might it also affect your moods (情绪) or your behavior? A team of scientists based in Shanghai, China decided to investigate.

To do that, they took advantage of data (数据) from what's known as the Adolescent Brain Cognitive Development (ABCD) Study. Begun in 2015, this study followed over 10,000 U.S. kids into adulthood. All were 9 to 10 years old when they started taking part. ABCD researchers have been collecting records from parents on how much their kids sleep on a regular basis. The scientists also have been surveying whether a kid might have a habit of getting into fights or breaking rules. They even note whether students have difficulty focusing their attention.

Wei Cheng, a mathematician from China, teamed up with other researchers, making a detailed study of the ABCD data. Cheng's group found out that kids who on average slept less than 7 hours a night were more likely to have behavior problems than kids who slept more. Kids who missed out on sleep also had more mood problems, including depression. Feeling sad or blue for longer than a week or two can be a sign of depression. Poor sleepers were also more likely to have stomach problems and headaches.

According to Kyla Wahlstrom, a professor at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, at night, your brain sorts information to link related facts but it takes the brain longer to organize negative (消极的) moods than positive ones. If you don't get enough sleep, your brain might not have time to finish tidying up. If the brain runs out of time, you're left with negative moods. That may explain why Cheng's group found out not getting enough sleep was connected with mood problems, says Wahlstrom.

Bill Gates was born in 1955. He grew up in Seattle, Washington. When he was young, he was good at science and maths. And he wanted to be a scientist.
