Families with unhealthy diets have worse mental health than those who mostly avoid meals packed with sugar, fat and salt. A new study is the first to show that children's mental health is not immune to what they eat, especially inflammatory (引起炎症的) diets.
The effects of inflammatory diets are putting kids on a path to poor mental health from as young as age 11. The evidence (证据) is now well proved that inflammation in the body is actually damaging bodies gradually and leading to many chronic (慢性的) diseases.
The Murdoch Children's Research Institute (MCRI) looked at the diets and self-reported mental health of more than 1,800 Australian parents and their 11-to-12-year-old children. as well as measuring markers of chronic inflammation in their blood.
The study, published in the British Journal of Nutrition, showed the benefits of healthy eating—namely anti-inflammatory diets high in fruit and vegetables—extended beyond physical health, and that families can eat their way to good mental health.
A child's weight was not an influencing factor. Regardless (不管) of size, the bad effects of inflammatory diets high in processed foods affected children across the board.
Lead researcher at the MCRI, Dr Kate Lycett said while research had shown that specific anti-inflammatory diets could reduce depression symptoms (症状) in adults, people knew little about the effect on children and how a typical family diet—a mix of both inflammatory and anti-inflammatory foods—affected mental health.
"What surprised me was we saw the same results in terms of the risk in children and parents," Dr Lycett said. "That's really important, because as adults we try to control what we eat. We know when we eat a packet of chips we feel sad, but we often don't think about that when we give our kids those chips."
(1)、Which diet should children avoid?A、The diet high in processed foods. B、The diet low in sugar, fat and salt. C、The diet high in fruit and vegetables. D、The diet low in inflammatory foods.(2)、What can we know about Dr Lycett's study?A、Inflammation in our body contributes to chronic diseases. B、We can eat our way to good health physically and mentally. C、A child's mental health is not immune to his or her weight. D、Anti-inflammatory diets can reduce depression symptoms.(3)、What does Dr Lycett really want to express in the last paragraph?A、The risk of giving adults inflammatory foods. B、The feeling of eating a packet of tasty chips. C、The effect of a typical family diet on children. D、The importance of controlling what kids eat.(4)、What is the best title for the text?A、Healthy eating leads to no inflammation B、Family diets have a mixed effect on kids C、Unhealthy diets are harming kids' mental health D、Junk food is damaging kids' physical health -

So far this winter, a theater in the Alps has staged more than 60 unique concerts. Winter temperatures in the remote mountain village can drop high below zero. Performers wear down jackets and play ice instruments. In fact, almost everything from drums and guitars to horns and harps at the music festival is carved from ice even the stage the musicians play on. The audience sits on ice chairs and benches and claps their hands to listen, both to praise the performers and to keep themselves warm when the air flows through.
The musical instruments used were almost entirely made by an American ice artist, Tim Linhart. Since he created his first musical instrument out of ice more than a decade ago, he has already carved various ice instruments, including violins, violas, timber drum sets, xylophone, double bass, mandolin and cello. He also created his own large wind instrument, which uses the vibration of an ice tube to produce sound when the air flows through.
Linhart makes the different parts of the ice instrument and then uses a liquid mixed with snow to glue them together, with a metal support placed where the strings need to be. A violin can usually be made in two or three weeks, while larger instruments can take more time and efforts, sometimes taking months to make.
An ice instrument has a clearer sound than a wooden instrument. However, ice instruments are more easily broken or damaged than ordinary instruments. The temperature in the ice theater changes depending on the number of people in the audience. This also changes the temperature of the ice instruments, which in turn affects the 1 sound they produce. Musicians need to tune their instruments frequently during performances.
Although playing an ice instrument is not easy, Linhart believes that ice and snow are good materials for making instruments. The only downside is melting when the temperature is above freezing.
(1)、What is special about the music festival?A、It attracts only the locals. B、It usually lasts two months. C、It has to be held in the cold. D、Its audience have to dress up.(2)、What does the underlined word "vibration" in Paragraph 2 probably mean?A、Temperature. B、Shaking. C、Length. D、Opening.(3)、What does Paragraph 4 mainly tell us about ice instruments?A、Strengths and weaknesses. B、Production methods. C、Specific materials. D、Different varieties.(4)、What is the purpose of the text?A、To promote an idea. B、To explain a theory. C、To share an event. D、To introduce a finding. -

I often wondered what it would be like to have cancer.
I didn't expect to find out, though, at last not for decades. I have always been healthy and strong; I regularly do hot yoga and swim two kilometers in a bay near my home in Sydney.
But now I know: it felt as if I was carrying a baby. Tumors (肿瘤) that silently grew inside me suddenly became bigger one weekend.
Then, one Saturday in June, I was struck with sharp pain and ended up in the hospital.
My doctor said it might be very serious. I spent two weeks waiting for the operation, not knowing if I'd live to the end of the year.
In the days before the operation, I turned off my phone and computer. I prayed so hard that I grew unnaturally calm.
The operation lasted five hours. The mass was fully removed, but it was unexpectedly complicated. I was in special care for eight days, in the wires, machines, with pipes in my lungs and liver.
Luckily, the operation was very successful and I am slowly growing stronger. I am walking upright again and waking without great pain. I can now drive, and am preparing to return to work. My prognosis (预后) is good, but I will need to live with the fear of return.
Everyone suddenly seems consumed with foolish worries. I have a different idea about the complaints posted by some Internet users who had the flu, were upset by the upcoming exams or burdened by work. I want to scream: BUT YOU ARE ALIVE! Alive! Each day is a gift, especially if you are upright and able to move with ease, without pain.
I'm still struggling with what all of this means. But in this short time, a truth became even clearer to me.
We should not have to move to the woods like Henry David Thoreau to "live meaningfully". It would be impossible and frankly tiring to live each day as if it were your last. My doctor asked me a few days ago how I became so calm before the operation. I told her: I prayed; I locked out negativity and drew my family and friends near; I tried to live meaningfully.
She said, "Actually you should do that for the rest of your life."
(1)、What did the author think of her physical state before being diagnosed (诊断) with cancer?A、She knew tumors silently grew inside her. B、She exercised regularly but felt bad sometimes. C、She thought there was nothing wrong with her health. D、She was considered to be healthy by the doctor.(2)、Which one is not the so-called "foolish worries" according to the author in Paragraph 9?A、Loss of both legs. B、Suffering from the flu. C、Burden of heavy workloads. D、Fear of the monthly exams.(3)、Which of the following can best describe the author?A、Kind and outgoing. B、Cautious and brave. C、Confident and generous. D、Positive and reflective.(4)、What is the author's purpose in writing the text?A、To share a pleasant experience. B、To recommend a healthy lifestyle. C、To call on people to live a worthy life. D、To try hard to make a difference to the world. -

The hardest thing about planning a big European vacation is actually narrowing down where to go—there are just so many amazing places. That's why we've put together what we think are the best cities in Europe.
AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS
Amsterdam is the kind of city that you can't help but fall in love with. It's the kind of place where you dream about moving and buying an apartment that overlooks (俯瞰) a peaceful river. It's relaxing and you get a sense that the locals have an amazing quality of free life. We love simply walking around the canals and exploring the city's neighborhoods.
BERLIN, GERMANY
Berlin is said to be "poor but charming" and we think that's a pretty good description. Actually, Berlin is becoming more expensive as its popularity grows, but it's still the top spot for Germany's artistic scene. Berlin isn't particularly pretty but it's an energetic city with cool people and cooler graffiti-covered (涂鸦) neighborhoods.
LISBON, PORTUGAL
Lisbon is a hot destination and I doubt it will be quickly moving up in the ranks of Europe's most visited cities. Lisbon is a popular coastal city that's famous for its unique buildings and charming café culture. It's also very friendly on the wallet when compared to other Western European cities—food and lodging are both priced reasonably and attractions are about average.
FLORENCE, ITALY
Florence may be touristy but that's no reason to ignore this birthplace of the Renaissance (文艺复兴). If you do your research, you can find plenty of excellent Italian restaurants and world-class ice cream. And, of course, the city is beautiful and home to top museums so it's a dream for art and history lovers.
(1)、Which city best suits people holidaying on the cheap?A、BERLIN, GERMANY. B、FLORENCE, ITALY. C、LISBON, PORTUGAL. D、AMSTERDAM, NETHERLANDS.(2)、What do BERLIN and FLORENCE have in common?A、They are famous for food. B、They are attractive to artists. C、They are cities of scenic beauty. D、They are of political importance.(3)、Where is the text probably from?A、A news report. B、A travel magazine. C、A restaurant advertisement. D、A science column. -

Cynthia was a primary school student. She was curious about everything. She made efforts to get a good grade in every subject. She was a kind-hearted and outgoing girl. At school, she was always ready to help her classmates. At home, she helped her mum do some housework. She was never a concern to her mum, Mrs. Anderson.
However, Mrs. Anderson noticed a change in Cynthia these days. There were more quiet moments. Mrs. Anderson saw Cynthia looking out of the window, lost in thought. She also learned from her teacher that Cynthia wasn't as focused on school as before. A sense of worry rose in Mrs. Anderson's heart and she wondered about what was behind Cynthia's unusual behavior.
Before going to bed, she started talking with Cynthia, asking about her day. However, Cynthia just said that nothing in particular happened. Mrs. Anderson's concern grew. She decided to keep a closer eye, hoping to uncover the challenges her daughter might be facing.
One day, while cleaning up Cynthia's bedroom, Mrs. Anderson discovered something unexpected — on her desk lay some books on how to treat injured birds. It was quite surprising. Cynthia had never told her about this. It also amazed Mrs. Anderson. She had a deep love for nature and birds and she could always find inspiration in their freedom and the beauty of their songs. She couldn't help but wonder what had inspired her daughter's newfound interest in birds.

Erin Alexander, who was suffering from the loss of her relative, was having a hard day. However, her day took an unexpected turn when she picked up her order and noticed a message on the cup: "Madam," the waitress had written next to a heart, "your heart is golden." The small and unexpected act moved her deeply, brightening the rest of her day.
New research confirms the great influence of experiences like Ms. Alexander's. Researchers found people who perform an unplanned act of kindness tend to undervalue how much the receiver will appreciate it. This could hold many of us back from doing nice things for others more often.
In a recent experiment, 84 participants (参与者) were given a hot chocolate on two cold weekends at a park and were told they could keep it or give it to a stranger. The 75 participants who gave away their drink were asked to guess how "big" their kind act would feel to the receiver on a scale (等级) from 0 to 10, and how the receiver would rate their feelings upon receiving it. The receivers were then asked to report how they actually felt using the same scale.
It turned out that the people doing the kind thing always undervalued the importance of their actions. While they thought they were offering something small, the receivers considered it more meaningful because someone had done something nice for them.
Despite longing for kindness, many people feel awkward at the thought of being kind. The "little inner voice" often leads them to question whether their behavior might be misunderstood or whether it will make the receiver feel pressured to pay it back.
But an act of kindness is unlikely to have unintended results; it can lead to even more kindness. If you are not already in the habit of performing unplanned kind acts, start by thinking about what you are interested in and how you can turn that into an offering for others.
(1)、How did Erin Alexander feel after reading the message?A、Calm. B、Puzzled. C、Warmed. D、Anxious.(2)、Paragraph 3 is mainly about the ____ of the experiment.A、rule B、process C、purpose D、result(3)、What may prevent people performing kindness according to the text?A、A mix of fears. B、Coldness from others. C、High expectations of others. D、Voices from the public.(4)、What does the author suggest readers do?A、Think twice before helping. B、Value kindness from others. C、Find ways to change habits. D、Take action to offer kindness. -

Every day, as I took long walks through North Vancouver, I would think about the potential joys of a physically closer network. Wouldn't it be great to have someone who could join me at a moment's notice? How good would it be to have more non-scheduled hangs instead of ones that had to be planned weeks in advance?
This doesn't have to be just a dream. Although technology is making it easier to maintain long-distance connections nothing can replace seeing friends in person. Researchers have found that happiness spreads "like an emotional contagion (传染)", especially among those who live close together.
Friends who live in the same city could decide to move within walking distance of one another — the same neighborhood, block, or even apartment building. Doing so would likely involve a lot of effort, but the resulting community could pay emotional dividends for years. Doing so would make it easier to support one another materially and emotionally.
Moving close to your friends requires some masterminding. Cities can make doing so easier by ending single-family zoning codes and encouraging a variety of housing types in neighborhoods. But even without official policies, people can make it work on their own. Sam Unger, 32, a food scientist and a friend of mine, has created a chosen family like this in Montreal, where about 15 of her friends live within walking distance of one another. When someone moves away, they try to transfer (移交) their lease (租约) to other friends. And when pals based elsewhere in the city are looking to move, Unger will try selling them on the positives of her neighborhood and sometimes even look for housing for them. "It's funny," she told me. "The other day, I bought a fire extinguisher, and she's like, ‘Oh, well, I have one. You could just call me if you had a fire, and I'd be right over with it.'"

C、States D、Effects.(3)、Why does the author mention Sam Unger?A、To tell Sam Unger has a talent in business. B、To prove people can move closer on their own. C、To show how important the official policies are. There's one patient that Sarah Rose Black still thinks about. Back in 2019, the nursing team at Toronto's Cancer Center called to ask if she could reach out to a patient who had been there for about a week. The man was struggling, and unwilling to communicate with workers or be part of any activities.
Black isn't a doctor or a nurse. Since 2013 she has played an important role for patients at the center as a music therapist (治疗专家). On any day, she might see one person who's anxious about an operation, another who's in need of a calm moment.
So, Black walked into the patient's room and introduced herself. She asked if she could sit and offer to play some music. In an effort to persuade him, she said, "If you don't like it, you can just tell me to leave." After some gentle urging, the man in his 70s, who had lung cancer, told her a few musicians he liked and then turned away to look out the window. But as she started to play one of his favorites, a change came over him. He turned towards Black and started to cry.
She stopped playing. "Do you want me to continue?" "Certainly," he said through tears. "It was as if the music went places that nothing else could," recalls Black. The music showed up at a moment when it felt like a hug.
As Sarah Rose Black says, people have been connecting with music for their whole lives—she is just helping them use it again at a time when they need it most.
"We have a heartbeat, so we have a drum (鼓) inside us; we are wired to be musical people," she says. She smiles softly as she reflects back on the experience.
(1)、Why did the nursing team call Black?A、A struggling patient hoped to meet her. B、She worked as a nurse in the center. C、They wanted her to help a patient. In the first and second grades, I was extremely shy. I had friends, but it just wasn't in my personality to be very outgoing, even if I knew someone well. I was even quieter with strangers, and so I wasn't very good at meeting new people. I was afraid that I would do or say something wrong.
So in our school's annual grand play, I usually sat in a secluded (僻静的) corner to watch the performance alone. I hoped to sit in the background and watch the actors sweat in front of all those pairs of eyes.
One day in the third grade, my teacher Mrs. Sally called me into her office and said, "Oh, Mary, you re great at memorizing things, and you have such a sweet personality. Perfect for Jenny! ‘ But I bowed my head and dared not speak. The teacher saw this and then said, "Of course, plenty of girls would love the role, and I could find somebody else. But I hope you could try it for me. I had you in mind for Jenny while writing the play! If you really don't want to, I won't force you. It's your choice."
My mind was spinning (快速旋转) faster than the windmill (风车) on the school playground. Mrs. Sally, whom I loved and admired, wanted me to play this role. She believed in me. My eyes moved across the room to a poster I had never noticed before. It showed a shooting star and read, "If you reach for the stars, you might at least grab a piece of the moon." I looked into Mrs. Sally's shining blue eyes and said, "Okay, I'll try." I realized it was time to throw off my shy mask and show the world who I really was.
In the following five months, the teacher taught me how to set, put on makeup, memorize lines, create costumes and so on. Gradually, I mastered (掌握) my lines and songs.

You made plans with friends, but when it's time to leave the house, you just don't have the energy. Or, maybe something else comes up, and you can't make it. But with a few tips, you can do it politely.
◆Text them as soon as possible.
That way, your friends can rearrange their schedules. If you know you cannot make it, try to text a day ahead of time. Otherwise, your friends might be annoyed about the inconvenience. If there's an emergency and you have to cancel the plan at the last minute, that's fine.
◆Be honest about your situation.
If you've encountered a change in your schedule, just tell them what it is. Your friends will be more understanding if they can tell you're telling the truth. Just say things like: "I ran into an issue at work." or "I'm dealing with some family problems."
◆Ask if you can reschedule.
Instead of saying "Let's hang out soon!", pick a new time, so your friends know that you're serious. Try to include this in your original message so they know what you're doing right away, and make sure it's a plan you can stick to so you don't have to cancel again.
◆
Add in one more nice thing to make a compliment (赞美) sandwich. After you tell your friends you have to cancel and apologize, let them know how much you appreciate them making plans with you. This will reassure them that you love spending time with them, and it can even help you feel less guilty, too.
A. Start with your appreciation.
B. Thank them for inviting you out.
C. Let them know how urgent the situation is.
D. There's no need to lie about what's going on.
E. It shows that you aren't just blowing them off.
F. Otherwise, you should try to cancel ahead of time.
G. Whatever the case is, cancelling plans can be annoying.

Eating insects is one of those ideas that never quite seem to catch on. The United Nations supported the idea a decade ago, but, in the West at least, insects remain mostly absent from supermarket shelves. Faced with this situation, scientists have been exploring other options. One is to feed insects to farm animals, which are not so picky.
Of course, insects need to eat, too. To date, they have mostly been raised on leftover chicken feed. But the supply of that is limited, and if insect-raised meat is to take off, new sources will be needed. In a paper in the Journal of Applied Entomology, Niels Thomas Eriksen, a biochemist at Aalborg University, suggests feeding them on the waste products of the beer industry.
The world knocks back around 185 billion litres of beer every year. Each litre produces between three and ten litres of wastewater full of abandoned substances that are richer in protein but not in carbohydrates (碳水化合物) , especially compared with chicken feed. Most insects grown for feed depend, in the wild, on the carbohydrates found in fruit which goes bad. Whether insects would actually consider beer waste square meal was, therefore, unclear.
The researchers used the baby black soldier flies. The insects were divided into three groups, which were offered beer waste, chicken feed and a mixture of both respectively. The researchers monitored both their weight gain and the amount of carbon dioxide they breathed out, which helped assess the insects' metabolic (新陈代谢的) performance. The babies happily consumed both beer waste and chicken feed, and grew equally well on either food source. When Dr Eriksen made further chemical analysis, he found few differences in the nutrients needed for farm animals' growth.
What the researchers found is good news for some other industries whose waste is likewise plentiful and protein-rich, and they now look to be reasonable targets for nutrient recycling by insects. Whether consumers will be willing to eat insect-raised meat, though, remains to be seen.
(1)、What do we know about eating insects in the beginning?A、It will probably catch on soon. B、Most westerners shy away from it. C、It is supported in most of the world. D、Most scientists turn down this idea.(2)、Why were the researchers initially unsure of beer waste as insect feed?A、Its supply is not enough. B、It contains too much protein. C、It lacks necessary carbohydrates. D、Its chemical contents are unknown.(3)、What did the researchers find about the insects?A、They preferred to eat chicken feed. B、They grew fastest on beer waste. C、They could turn beer waste into meat. D、They needed more food than expected.(4)、What does the author indicate in the last paragraph?A、Some industries rarely recycle their waste. B、The practical application of the findings is limited. C、Insect-raised meat is likely to be the next fashion. D、The experiment has an outlook beyond the beer industry. -

It's midafternoon. You're full from lunch. The day is warm. You're starting to feel sleepy. Should you give in to the comfort of a nap (小睡)?
From the viewpoint of health, it may be worth it. Though there is a hassle when it comes to whether napping benefits everyone, we generally acknowledge that naps can improve at least some people's cognitive (认知的) performance in the short term.
For example, scientists reviewed a past experiment that focused on healthy participants with regular sleep cycles. In that experiment, participants were given math problems that could be solved with a shortcut that they weren't told about. Some participants were encouraged to take a nap before dealing with the problems. It was found that those who napped-and spent even just 30 seconds in the first, lightest stage of sleep-were 2.7 times more likely to figure out the math shortcut than those who stayed awake. But entering a deeper sleep stage had a negative effect.
The benefits of napping are strongest for people who have sleep debt, such as shift workers, new parents and elderly people whose nighttime sleep is always interrupted. They all seem to get a boost through napping: a 2013 study focusing on such people, for example, showed that taking a nap during one's night shift work reduced sleepiness and improved overall performance, even if people were slightly inactive as they came out of their nap-a phenomenon called "sleep inertia (惰性)".
There is something we can do to reduce sleep inertia. A 20-minute nap is good for recharging, and 60 to 90 minutes of sleep can be even more restorative. The nap to avoid is one lasting more than 20 minutes and less than 60 minutes, which is most likely to lead to sleep inertia.
(1)、What does the underlined word "hassle" mean in paragraph 2?A、Debate. B、Tendency. C、Guidance. D、Judgement.(2)、What did the experiment find about napping?A、It improves memory. B、It helps clear one's mind C、It may promote one's health. D、It has a bad influence on people.(3)、What can we infer about the subjects of the 2013 study?A、They tended to nap more. B、They were inactive in daytime. C、They came out of their naps slowly. D、They didn't get enough nighttime sleep(4)、How can we avoid sleep inertia?A、By taking fewer naps. B、By napping within 1 hour. C、By managing the nap length. D、By avoiding long naps.
