The traditional handwritten "thank you" letter is no longer the most popular way to express gratitude, with digital methods such as instant messages and emails favored instead, according to a recent research. 

A survey of 2,000 adults finds just 9 percent send a letter of thanks nowadays—a decline of 11 percent in the past ten years— while messages via WhatsApp, SMS text, email and Facebook, have become some of the most common ways to show appreciation. 

Despite this, handwritten notes of gratitude are in fact considered to be among the top most meaningful ways to say thank you—close behind heartfelt phone calls and visiting someone to show appreciation in person. Further highlighting the influence of the personal touch, the M&S Club Rewards research finds hand-delivering flowers or treating someone to a coffee are also among the truest ways to show thanks. 

The research also finds 58 percent think it is more essential than ever to say thank you to loved ones, with 28 percent admitting the last couple of years have helped them appreciate the little things. And 29 percent think it's really necessary to show others just how much they mean to them so they realize how loved they are. 

However, in our digital age—and with all these new and simple ways to communicate and show our gratitude—saying a quick thank-you via instant message has become the habit for many. But if you really want to share a meaningful thank-you, giving someone your time or adding an element of a personal or more human touch will go a long way and have a much bigger impact. 

Paul Stokes, from M&S Club Rewards, says: "Our research shows that while the art of saying thank you may have changed over the years, the significance of showing our appreciation has never been higher."

Over the last few years, we have had to come together and support each other perhaps more than ever, so it's great to see so many of us are taking the time to share a thank-you. 

Li Jing, 29, currently serves as the director assistant to the village secretary of Maotianping Village Committee in Cuijiaba, a town in Hubei province. Li is a native of this village and was one of the first from her community to achieve higher education. She studied hotel management and tourism. After graduation, she started a career in the hotel industry in Wuhan. However, she made a decision last year to return to her village. She wants to be an essential part of her hometown's development, realizing her own personal value. 

When Li returned to her hometown, she received unconditional support from her family, despite some villagers' questioning her decision. She resolved to prove herself through determination and action. 

Her job involves extensive communication with the villagers, with over half of her workload about promoting potato production, the main business of the village. Li and the villagers regularly hold meetings in the village square, where they share insights on potato planting techniques, sales channels, market trends, and more. These gatherings provide her with opportunities to equip the villagers with planting tools and offer a window for them to voice their concerns and experiences. 

In her spare time, Li remains closely connected with the villagers through regular conversations. She admits that it demands a considerable investment of time and energy, but it's all worthwhile. 

Li has very fond memories of an incident from last year when one villager had a poor potato crop. Although her potatoes were unimpressive in terms of size and quality, she held faith in Li and worked tirelessly and enthusiastically. Li never forgets the smiles on the villagers' faces at harvest time, which is the ultimate reward for her. 

In the near future, Li hopes to continue helping her fellow villagers raise their potato production and increase their income. Her long-term vision is to promote urban-rural integration（整合）.

As the holidays rolled around this year,I (Susie)told my husband (James)not to buy me anything. I already

have too much stuff. I have no room for yet another item that will take up cherished space in our city home.

Practicing voluntary simplicity is associated with a number of psychological benefits,including enhanced mood,increased mindfulness,lower stress and anxiety,and better relationships,as reported in the recent Journal of Positive Psychology literature review study.

That's great news for people like Ryann Melntire,who began experiencing severe joint pain,unstable bloodsugar levels,brain fog and other symptoms while studying abroad in Australia in 2016. It got so bad that she flew home to Massachusetts early and began a frustrating quest for a diagnosis. More than one doctor attributed her symptoms to stress. After a friend asked whether she'd been tested for Lyme disease,Mclntire requested a blood test,which confirmed she had the antibodies in her system. That result,as well as her symptoms,led her doctor to conclude that McIntire had been living with Lyme for more than a decade. 

Lyme disease,which was first identified in Lyme,Connecticut,in the 1970s,comes from black-legged ticks. Symptoms include fever,joint pain,headache and chills,and they can appear anywhere from three to 30 days after a bite. That makes diagnosis a challenge,as does the fact that the symptoms are common for other illnesses,says Janet Sperling,the president of the Canadian Lyme Disease Foundation. The one definitive symptom of Lyme disease,a bull's-eye shaped rash(疹) . doesn't always show up. 

If left undiagnosed,Lyme disease can affect the central nervous system,resulting in a hard-to-treat condition. Its symptoms include brain fog,pain and muscle weakness. "Until a vaccine is widely available,your best defense against Lyme disease is to avoid getting bitten by a black-legged tick",says Sperling. 

Zach Hackett,33,was 12,000 feet up a Colorado mountain last May when he heard a faint sound. As he walked through a clearing,he found the source:a black-and-white Shetland sheepdog,shaking behind fallen pine trees. "Hey,buddy,"he called out. "You want a cookie?Can you come with me?"The dog was too weak to move. 

Five weeks earlier,Mike Krugman,74,had let his dog Riley out for a predinner walk on his nearby 36-acre property. When Krugman couldn't find his dog,he became concerned. He thought,"Maybe Riley has gone looking for Pam. "His wife,Pam Krugman,had died of a heart condition months earlier. The next morning,Krugman

looked for Riley's tracks in the snow and asked a local animal shelter to help search. A volunteer posted "missing" posters and searched the area for Riley. But in vain. Krugman even left out his wife's housecoat,thinking her smell might bring Riley back. 

Wrapping Riley in a wind breaker and cradling him like a baby,Hackett carefully picked his way down for two hours before reaching the Blue River around dusk. He carried Riley through the knee-deep water. The current was strong,but he felt he had to cross the river instead of walking around it,or it would take too long,and Riley needed to be warmed up. When he reached his apartment,he ran a warm bath for Riley and turned on a heater. 

Hackett cared for Riley through the night. then drove him to a nearby shelter in the morning. 

People at the shelter were shocked when they checked the records and learned Riley had been gone for five weeks and one day. In that moment,Hackett realized why Riley was so weak when he found him—Riley weighed 24 pounds when he went missing,and had lost half of his body weight. 

The moment Krugman got the call from the shelter,saying Riley was found,he cried. Krugman picked up Riley and drove him straight to a vet and was just so thankful for what he did and for the efforts of all the people who searched for Riley.

APSS2S09 is a 3-credit 2-semester Service-Learning subject offered by the Department of Applied Social Sciences. 

This subject is designed to enable students to understand the core qualities of service leaders in terms of competence and character. Upon completion of the subject,students will be able to identify and address the needs of the service beneficiaries through using service leadership skills. 

Requirements

·Full-time undergraduate students

·An intermediate level of Putonghua is required for effective delivery of services in Hangzhou. Special consideration can be given to international students who are not fluent in Putonghua.
