5、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Lena had always been a quiet girl who struggled to make friends. At school, whenever someone tried to talk to her, her mind would race with worries: "What if I say something wrong? What if they think I'm strange? " These thoughts always made her stumble over her words or give awkward replies. Once, after she accidentally gave a wrong answer in class, she heard some classmates giggling (咯咯地笑). Since then, she had become even more afraid to speak up.
One rainy afternoon, while walking home from school, she noticed a small dog huddled (蜷缩) under a bush. The dog looked lost and scared, just like how she felt whenever she tried to join a conversation. It was shivering, wet, and alone. Lena crouched down and gently approached it.
The dog wagged (摇摆) its tail slightly and came closer. Lena noticed a blue collar hidden under its wet fur. Something about its trusting eyes made her heart ache. She decided to take it home. Her parents agreed to keep it temporarily while searching for its owner. Lena named the dog "Shadow" because it followed her everywhere, just like her own shadows of self-doubt.
As days passed, Lena noticed how naturally Shadow interacted with everyone. At the park, he would approach others with complete confidence and make friends effortlessly. Even when he made mistakes, like accidentally knocking over someone's water bottle, his friendly tail wag would make everyone laugh with him, not at him.
Taking Shadow for walks gave Lena unexpected friendships. Emily, a girl from her class, often came to the park with her own dog. They started talking about their pets, and soon Emily became Lena' s first real friend. Through Emily, Lena met other kids and gradually found herself part of a group that would meet at the park to play with their dogs. For the first time, she felt like she belonged.

10、A puzzling primate (灵长类动物) might be the offspring (后代) of two distantly related species. And this monkey business is worrying scientists. Six years ago, tour guide Brenden Miles was traveling down the Kinabatangan River. He was on the Southeast Asian island of Borneo. Suddenly, he spotted an odd-looking primate, so he snapped a few photos. At first, he thought it could be a silvered leaf monkey with rare coloring. But then he noticed other details: The monkey's tail was thicker than it should be, and its nose was long like that of a proboscis monkey.
Scientists have now studied those photos. They suspect that this mystery monkey is a hybrid (杂交物种). Sometimes closely related species hybridize. This happens only occasionally in the wild. But what was especially surprising in this case is that the monkey's suspected parents a male proboscis monkey and a female silvered leaf monkey — are distant relatives. Scientists are concerned that this might signal that the creature's parent species are in trouble.
"Changes to the parent monkeys' habitat might explain a hybrid," said Nadine Ruppert, a primatologist who studied the mystery monkey. Oil palm plantations have been expanding along the Kinabatangan River. As forests turn to farmland, wildlife habitats can be harmed or lost. "In some spots, the suspected parent monkey species have been squeezed into small patches of forest along that river," Ruppert said. "Monkeys there could have to compete more for mates. In close quarters, the male of the bigger species can dominate. In this case, the proboscis male might easily displace males of the silvered leaf monkey."
The mystery monkey has made people living in the area very excited. "The hybrid is gorgeous, but we don't want to see more of them," Ruppert said. "Both proboscis monkeys and silvered leaf monkeys may lack enough food and space to behave as they would naturally." In Borneo and around the world, human activities and climate change are hurting animal habitats. As natural habitats are lost, mating between different species might increase.
(1)、What is the second paragraph mainly about?A、The discovery of a rare species. B、A photographer's unusual adventure. C、The new features of a strange primate. D、Differences between two monkey species.(2)、What can be inferred about the two suspected parent monkey species?A、They have to fight for oil palm fruit. B、They were previously close relatives. C、Proboscis monkeys are smaller in size. D、Shared habitats influence their interaction.(3)、What may cause hybridization according to the text?A、Natural disasters. B、Unsustainable farming. C、Extensive deforestation. D、Competitions within the species.(4)、How does Nadine Ruppert feel about the appearance of the "mystery monkey"?A、Puzzled. B、Concerned. C、Excited. D、Relieved. -
11、Your genes are inherited from parents and ancestors, picking up traits that help us survive and evolve with environments around us.
Much of this is encoded as natural instinct. When a baby is born, it needn't be taught how to breathe or cry —this is hard-wired into our DNA. We know that when tired we need to sleep and when hungry we need to eat. The same goes for animals. Within two hours of being born, a foal attempts its first steps with little guidance from its parent, all from instinct.
As well as our basic instincts, our genetics can carry more complex abilities, knowledge and reflexes. Findings have also hinted that our facial expressions could be hard-wired behaviors. Babies start to smile at around two — again, this isn't specifically taught. Although they may take in the expressions of people around, it's hard to test if they connect emotion to the faces they see. However, a 2019 study showed that athletes who had been born blind made the same disheartened expressions when losing as athletes with sight, suggesting that facial expressions may not be learnt from watching others.
While genetics play a part, infants are also heavily influenced during their time in the womb (子宫). Mothers who eat strong-tasting foods such as garlic can affect children's taste buds, giving them a fancy for the same tastes later in life. Taste and smell are important triggers that babies look for when first feeding, as the mother's milk will carry the same flavors experienced in the womb. This pre-birth taste sampling increases their chances of survival.
Generational memory could also explain why certain people are naturally gifted in areas like music or sport. Actually, the existence of it is hard to prove, since so many environmental and outside factors change behaviour and personality, especially with young minds, which are easily developed. However, the theory is starting to be taken more seriously, and studies involving short-generation life forms such as nematode worms are making significant breakthroughs. We may soon have undeniable proof that our genetics pass down more than we think.
(1)、Which of the following behavior is hard-wired into our genes?A、Learning to walk at two years old. B、Having meals due to hunger. C、Recognizing parents' voices after birth. D、Using tools to solve problems.(2)、What does the author imply in paragraph 3?A、Facial expressions may have a genetic basis. B、Babies learn facial expressions from their parents. C、Emotional responses are totally shaped by environment. D、Blind athletes can't express emotions effectively.(3)、What does paragraph 4 mainly talk about?A、The role genetics play in babies' survival. B、Significance of taste and smell in infants' growth. C、Infants' adaptability to food flavors in the womb. D、Impact of pregnant mothers' diets on babies' taste preferences.(4)、What can we know about generational memory?A、Environmental factors deny its existence. B、Promising scientific studies show its significance. C、It has been proven by existing evidence. D、It powerfully explains people's talent. -
12、It started innocently enough, as most things do. My son Nick had been eager to try rock climbing and he needed a partner. As a 45-year-old mother, I am not a physical person at all. But I still decided to join him in a training class. The first time I reached the top and returned safely to the ground, I was flooded with a mix of emotions. My body trembled with adrenaline (肾上腺素), as I had pushed myself harder than I ever thought possible, but I had accomplished it.
Four months into my climbing journey, I had an accident while bouldering (攀岩). I'm not sure what exactly happened, but I believe, my foot missed a hold on the way down. I didn't land properly and injured my lower back. I was taken to the hospital by ambulance. I feared that I would never return to rock climbing or bouldering and said to Nick sadly, "A piece of me would slip away. It would be forgotten and lie passive forever. I couldn't let that happen."
It took nearly three months before I felt strong enough to give it another try. Nick was supportive throughout the process. I made it halfway up, but then panic set in. I felt like I had let myself and Nick down. He reassured me, telling me not to worry, to take my time, and to try a different route when I was ready. Fifteen minutes later, I chose a different path. I kept reminding myself that I could change my mind at any time. Along the way Nick guided and encouraged me. To my surprise, I made it to the top and back to the ground safely.
Rock climbing was doing wonders for me. It has not only enhanced my physical and mental strength but also implanted in me a newfound sense of confidence. Moreover, it serves as an excellent opportunity for Nick and me to strengthen our bond, while encouraging me to explore more possibilities, embodying the spirit of pushing myself to the limits.
(1)、Why did the author join rock climbing at first?A、To keep her son company. B、To step out of comfort zone. C、To improve her physical condition. D、To seek adventure and enjoyment.(2)、The author's words to her son in paragraph 2 imply that _______.A、she was concerned about disconnecting with Nick B、she feared losing self-identity gained from climbing C、she valued the new insight developed from climbing D、she was eager to demonstrate her physical capabilities(3)、What was the key to the author's successful try after recovery?A、Her passion. B、Nick's backing. C、Her experience. D、Doctors' encouragement.(4)、Which of the following is the best title of the text?A、Facing up to the next challenge B、Reaching for a lifelong ambition C、Pushing boundaries with rock climbing D、Enhancing competence through bouldering -

14、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The bright spot of red was what first caught Randy Jackson's attention on December 16, 2018, as he hiked the remote fields behind his ranch (牧场) in Patagonia, Arizona, near the U.S.-Mexico border. Jackson walked toward it with his dog, and found it to be a weathered balloon entangled (缠住) in the dry grass, with a string attached to something.
It was a note. "Dayami," it read on one side, in a child's writing. A hand-drawn bow accompanied the word. Jackson flipped the paper over. It was a numbered list, all in Spanish. Although his Spanish wasn't very good, he could see it was a Christmas list.
Jackson was charmed. He guessed that a child might have tried to send Santa Claus a Christmas wish list by balloon, something he used to do himself when he was a kid. Nobody had ever returned the letters Jackson had sent aloft (空中), but he still hoped he could find the girl who had sent this one.
It would be difficult, but Jackson had a few clues (线索). About 20 miles to the southwest, just across the border, was the city of Nogales, Mexico, with a population of about a quarter million. "Based on the prevailing (盛行的) wind, that's surely where it came from," he thought.
Jackson brought the note home to his wife, who is fluent in Spanish and helped him translate the list. They determined that Dayami, probably a girl, had asked for a doll, a dollhouse, clothes, and art supplies, among other things.
Jackson then posted about it on social media, attaching photos, hoping some of his friends in Nogales might know the girl's family. A few days passed with no leads; Jackson worried that time was running out before Christmas. On December 19, 2018, he decided to send a private message to Radio XENY, an AM radio station based in Nogales. To his surprise, someone from the station called him back right away. Jackson's wife helped explain the situation on the phone, and got the promise that Radio XENY would air the story, and arrange a meeting between them and Dayami's family, as soon as Dayami was found.

16、阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
Standing in a field edged by rolling hills, two days before the first tour date in late September, Ba Nong, the frontman of the Chinese band Varihnaz, looked over the yellowed remnants of the rice stalks (黄色稻茬) he (spend) the past few months tending. "The land gets to rest, and I get to go play," he said.
Ba Nong, a 44-year-old farmer and (music) from rural Guangxi, hopes his music inspires people to break free from mainstream expectations. He and his band Varihnaz gained national attention on "The Big Band". Despite potential success, they chose to prioritize their lifestyle, even (drop) out of the competition's final rounds to avoid interfering with harvest.
Ba Nong worked as a graphic designer in Guangzhou but (grow) disillusioned (幻想破灭) and moved back home in 2012 to pursue organic farming and revive local (tradition). He connected with two like- minded individuals online-another farmer and bricklayer or from rural Guangxi-and reformed the unconventional band Varibnaz, meaning "fields filled with fragrant flowers" the language of Guangxi's Zhuang ethnic minority. Their song "Big Dream" resonated (共鸣) with audiences, who thought the group offered a refreshing break from China's hyper-commercialized popular entertainers with music about a simpler, (slow) way of life, an alternative to the intense competition of modern Chinese life, although they, faced criticism for romanticizing rural life. Ba Nong promotes a mindset of authenticity and staying true to oneself. During their tour, they educated audiences about (nature) farming and sold their own rice.
he's disappointed that their fame hasn't led to widespread lifestyle reassessment, he's content with their achievements and is prepared to return to farming if their fame fades.

17、A panel of nutrition experts released their 2025 dietary guidelines. These guidelines will inform and shape the food programs and policy of the U. S. government. Overall, the recommendations for the guidelines sound familiar. They should also eat less red meat and processed meats, as well as vegetables like potatoes.
This panel worked on the guidelines for almost two years. It was the first to consider dietary needs based on financial situation, race and culture. Fatima, an obesity expert, said that considering these new elements will help make sure that the guidance reflects and includes various population groups.
Several of them showed links between ultra-processed foods and being overweight or obesity. But the nutrition experts said the evidence was too limited to make recommendations. The panel also didn't change recommendations about alcohol. The current guidelines are two drinks or less a day for men and one for women. The nutrition panel described a healthy diet for people beginning at two years old.
The diets of most Americans don't meet the current guidelines. More than half of American adults have one or more diet-related health condition. The report also notes that nutrition-related long-term health conditions will continue to threaten health throughout their life.
The dietary guidelines are updated every five years. Related government officials will then hold a public meeting to discuss the recommendations before they are finally released. All this makes it possible for Americans to attach importance to the dietary guidelines.
A. The panel considered more than 40 studies.B. For a healthy diet, people should eat more beans.
C. The last time the guidance was updated was in 2020.
D. The public has 60 days to comment on the guidance.
E. 18 million individuals have insecure sources of food.
F. It is high in vegetables, fruits, nuts, whole grains and fish.
G. We should also note that there's something missing in the guideline.

18、Not that long ago asking for an alcohol-free beer in a British pub made you seem weird. Less so now. Alcohol consumption (饮用) is falling among young, wealthy and health-conscious consumers. Better brewing (酿制) techniques have introduced tastier non-alcoholic choices. Sales of alcohol-free beer have increased by 26% in the past year.
Even so, the overall market is still tiny. Non-alcoholic beverages make up a sliver (少量) of Britain's alcoholic drink market, at just 3%. That is comparable to the share in France and America but far behind that in Germany (16%) or Spain (11%). Sales growth of alcohol-free drinks would need to exceed 40% each year to come close to raising their market share above 10% by 2030.
Wider availability and better products will naturally help the market to grow. But so would fixing a specific problem in the British market. According to standards set by the Department of Health and Social Care, drinks must contain less than 0.05% alcohol by volume (aby) to be considered alcohol-free. That is less than the alcohol content of burger rolls or ripe bananas. It is also much less than incomparable markets. The 0.5% aby beers made by Big Drop, a British craft brewer, are officially deemed (认为) non-alcoholic in America, Australia and Germany but not at home.
This strict standard has two consequences. One is for competition. Obeying the guidance is hard for smaller brands in particular; producing drinks at 0.05% aby or less requires expensive equipment to extract (提取) the alcohol. Some don't even bother trying. Nearly one-third of the drinks sold and labeled (标明) as alcohol-free in Britain ignore the official guidance. That leads to the second consequence: confusion. More than half of respondents in a poll (民意调查) by Opinium, a research firm, said there was a lack of clarity over the suitability of non-alcoholic products for pregnant women, drivers and people who don't drink for religious reasons.
The government, keen to give more options to people who drink to excess (过量), has launched a consultation (磋商) on updating its rules so that drinks with 0.5% aby can legally reach the alcohol-free standard. A labeling change is not going to make the market go crazy but it would bring Britain into line with other countries. And it might make it even easier to order something non-alcoholic next time you are at the bar.
(1)、Why are the figures mentioned in Paragraph 2?A、To prove a point. B、To attract the readers. C、To warm people. D、To make a proposal.(2)、What can we learn about the non-alcoholic drink market in Britain?A、The overall non-alcoholic drink market is bigger than before. B、The non-alcoholic drink market share will reach 10% by 2030. C、The market growth merely depends on wider availability and better products. D、Alcohol-free drinks have a much bigger market share in France than in Britain(3)、What does the underlined "That" in Paragraph 4 refer to?A、Lacking clarity over the suitability for different people B、Some brands' disregarding the British official guidance. C、Considering the drink less than 0.05% aby to be alcohol-free D、Small brands' buying the expensive equipment to extract the alcohol(4)、What benefit will the consultation launched by the government bring?A、It will give alcoholic drinks legal status. B、It will cause the market to grow dramatically. C、It will help Britain keep pace with other countries. D、It will make people choose non-alcoholic beverages. -
19、Online literature is believed to have first gained a significant foothold in the Chinese mainland. Started domestically in the 1990s, Chinese online literature has been booming globally over the past two decades. Whether it be online releases or physical book publications, works in Mandarin only to be voluntarily translated by enthusiasts are a growing phenomenon.
The establishment of online reading platforms and the setup of overseas localization and development ecosystems have led to Chinese online literature continuously expanding its global influence. It is now described as one of the world's four major cultural phenomena, along with US Hollywood movies, Japanese animation and South Korean TV dramas.
Featuring magnificent imagination, fascinating plots and compelling (扣人心弦) stories, it is drawing a growing mass of readers from all over the world. According to a report released by the China. Writers Association last April, Chinese online literature has captivated (迷住) nearly 200 million active overseas users, 80 percent of whom are Generation Z readers — those born between the mid-1990s and early 2010s-from most countries and regions worldwide. Another report released by the China Audio-Video and Digital Publishing Association in December revealed that in 2023, China's online literature industry earned 4.35 billion yuan ($597 million) from international markets, up 7 percent year-on-year.
"The charm of Chinese online literature is boundless. It goes beyond the limitations of traditional literature, breaking cultural barriers to resonate (共鸣) with readers around the world. As someone from faraway Italy, I've found deep emotional connection and inspiration in these works. Themes like the pursuit of dreams and the fight for justice are universal, uniting people across cultures," said Carlo Maria Rossi, a stage designer and creative director from Rome and a big fan of the popular Chinese web novel Lord of Mysteries.
Currently, Chinese online literature is crossing more boundaries and exploring a new path of going global. With a focus on "global co-creation on intellectual property", online literature writers from different nations and regions are joining hands in developing their web novel IPs, creating a new wave of the globalization of literature while promoting cultural understanding and exchanges.
(1)、Which contributes to the global expansion of Chinese online literature?A、The rapid spread of Mandarin. B、The promotion of other cultural forms. C、The long history of traditional literature. D、The building of online reading platforms.(2)、What can we learn from Paragraph 3?A、The high cost of developing Chinese online literature overseas. B、The limited growth potential of Chinese online literature in the future. C、The dominance of Chinese online literature in the international market. D、The increasing popularity and economic value of Chinese online literature.(3)、What can be inferred from Carlo Maria Rossi's words?A、Lord of Mysteries is well-received in Italy. B、People can find more emotional links in Italian literature. C、Chinese online literature appeals to readers from other cultures. D、Italian literature has the same themes as Chinese online literature.(4)、What does the passage mainly talk about?A、Chinese literature is popular with Generation Z readers. B、How Chinese literature influences other cultural phenomena. C、Chinese online literature rises from local origins to global waves. D、Why Chinese online literature promotes people's cultural exchanges. -
20、My childhood was a painted picture of a sunny sky and rolling green fields stretching to the horizon. It tasted of sharp berries and smelt of sour grapes. My family lived in a cabin in the countryside, but I lived in my mother's arms. They were so delicate but strong, and her red hair falling around me was like a curtain that separated me from the world.
Childhood was simple. The borders of my village were the furthest my troubles went and monsters only lived in the pages of books. Every day was a waking dream of running races and muddy knees. My village wasarchaic, dying cabins housing dying farmers with dying traditions. There weren't many children but me and the other boys; boys of butchers and sellers formed our own group.
They called us wild. I suppose we were. Trees and mountains formed our playgrounds and fights broke out as easily as sudden laughter. Liberated (解放) from the restrictions of society, we would bound into the woods, deeper and deeper until we found a lake which, with a wild yell, we would jump into all at once.
My most vivid memories from boyhood center around that lake. Water shone brightly and the sounds of our screams broke into the outery from birds. The shock of cold water against sweating skin would wake every nerve in my body and my bare feet would hit the sinking muddy bottom. As we submerged (浸没), time would stop, movements slowing as bubbles rose around us.
I was drowning. I was living. I was living. I was drowning. For timelessness or a second (both felt the same), we would pause, curl up, and then be forced back out into breathing air.
We should have known that it wouldn't last forever. Yet, even under the best circumstances, there's something so tragic about growing up: your perspective on the people and life around you changes; you always struggle to reach a mirror, only to find yourself tall enough to see your reflection one day and find a different person staring back out at you.
