Paul liked to invent something, and he was fond of literature and had been dreaming of becoming an editor. He skimmed through the annual nomination (提名) on the front page of the newspaper, the brightness in his eyes turned less bright as he moved down the list of names, which eventually faded when he reached the end. He lifted his sight from the newspaper and started staring at the kiosk owner dully (无精打采地), an expression similar to that when he arrived. The old woman sighed—she was so accustomed to this lifeless look on his face but had prayed to see something new every August.

"Bad luck", with this, Paul slid away rapidly. When approaching the corner of the street, he narrowly knocked down an old gentleman, the kiosk owner's husband, Arthur, who once was a chief editor of a local famous magazine and now he was retired.

We all love butterflies. Their beautiful wings attract us, and their presence lights up our garden. Well, that's our view of butterflies, but have you ever wondered what plants think of them?

The butterflies' eggs lie on the underside of the leaves. The eggs themselves don't damage plants. However, upon coming into contact with the eggs, the plants become oversensitive. It means that once a plant recognizes a pest, it will cause death in the contacted plant part. When these dead leaves or partial leaf parts break away from the plant, the eggs on them fall off. Along with the hypersensitivity response, plants also produce something special, which can attract animals to eat the eggs, thus preventing damage in the future.

After the baby butterflies come out of their eggs, the caterpillar (毛虫) stage begins. Most caterpillars feed on the leaves of the plants, damaging some of the plants in your garden. Incredibly, they are major plant pests that bring about major losses to farmers. The next stage is pupa (蛹). The caterpillars begin their change into an adult. They don't depend on the energy that the leaves provide. Finally, they become adult butterflies that have wings and move from one plant to the other. They feed on sweet liquid produced by flowers.

While on their search for food, the butterflies carry pollen (花粉) on their body. They are key pollinators that place pollen from one flower to another in ecosystem. Plants that have flowers will create some special features to draw these pollinators' attention. Certain plants have flowers giving off smells that can charm butterflies when they are looking for a mate. Some plants even have flat flowers to assist butterflies when landing.

Butterflies aid in pollination during their final adult stage. Thus, they change into beneficial insects to plants. This change makes butterflies an important friend of plants, despite being a hated enemy in previous life cycle stages!

Landscape architect Kotchakorn Voraakhom has designed a new green roof on the Rangsit Campus of Thammasat University, about 25 miles north of central Bangkok, Thailand. Her imaginative work challenges the common thinking that urbanization has a negative impact on the planet, whether flooding, excess (过度的) energy use, disrupted (扰乱) biodiversity or the heat island effect.

The 236,806-square-foot structure, which opened in December 2019, includes a floodwater management system and Asia's largest rooftop organic farm. It combines modern landscape architecture with traditional agricultural knowledge, creating a green and friendly environment.

The green roof, containing an H-shaped landscape, looks like a futuristic hill with a brick building beneath it. The hill features a complex pattern of zigzagging terraces (之字形梯田)of planted beds, leading all the way down to the bottom. When rainwater hits the roof, it flows down the zigzags while being absorbed by the soil in the beds. The excess water is directed into four storage ponds—with a capacity of up to 3 million gallons. The process slows down the flow speed of rainwater runoff compared to a normal concrete rooftop. This keeps the area from flooding during heavy rains.

The roof's terraces are filled with organically grown crops, including a drought tolerant variety of rice, many local vegetables and herbs. The farm can supply the canteens on campus with a large amount of rice, herbs and vegetables a year. The food waste is composted (把……制成堆肥) to fertilize the farm, and water from the storage ponds is used to water plants, creating an entirely localized and circular system.

The farm serves as an outdoor classroom and a source of local jobs, too. Farmers offer workshops on sustainable agriculture and nutrition as part of the university's sustainability curriculum. "Students and community members are invited to participate in seasonal seeding, harvesting, and so on," says Voraakhom. "The urban farm is training a new generation of organic farmers with real-world skills. It also promotes a sense of community."

Orla Walsh was not exactly an example of good health. Back in 2014, the 25-year-old then was fully occupied with her work and graduate study in Dublin, mostly eating on the go. "I was feeding on quick, easy food like sandwiches," she said. "I stayed up a lot and the gym was a foreign concept for me for I did not work out at all."

That changed the following year when Walsh needed a convenient, reliable and budget-friendly way to get to and from class. "Driving was expensive, and public transportation in the Irish capital left much to be desired," she said. She turned instead to cycling.

At first, Walsh was doubtful. "I didn't want to wear the same suits like other riders because it looked strange for me," she joked. But as soon as she gave it a go, she was spellbound. The six miles she had to cover on her commute (上下班往返) each way didn't seem like so much. "I can't believe how quick and easy that was," Walsh said. "The more I cycled, the easier it got, and I started getting faster. I think what I enjoyed the most was the freedom the bike gave me."

In early 2016, she took the next step and joined a local cycling club, where she took part in long group rides. But something incredible was happening at the same time. As her weekly mileage (里程数) increased, her unhealthy habits fell by the wayside. She cleaned up her diet and cut back on burning the midnight oil. "I gradually got rid of that bad habit after joining in training," she said.

Then, thanks to the encouragement of other club members, she tried open road racing. At first, she was overwhelmed by the competition, getting dropped by other members on every climb. Yet she kept pushing and viewing the failures as learning experience. "I was enjoying the challenges and was more confident," she said.

The National Football Museum has the world's largest public collection of football objects and archives (档案), which is known as the Football Heritage Collection. In 2013 it was recognised as an official Designated Collection by Arts Council England and described as "of outstanding importance and value". The finest single collection of football in the world was collected by Harry Langton, a London journalist with a passion for the game. The vast collection includes artwork, toys and games and playing equipment, and also houses a number of objects relating to women's football.

This collection reflects all aspects of the history and development of the world's oldestprofessional league, founded in 1888. Handbooks, attendance records, programmes and a large range of books provide an invaluable research tool for the museum.

The People's Collection

This rich and developing collection features objects donated to us by members of thepublic, footballers(and their families) and other people related to the game. The 6,000-strong collection features all kinds of items.

Bolton Wanderers and Preston North End Collections

The official collection from Preston North End contains over 1,000 objects and celebratesone of the most famous clubs in the history of the game, and the team that play at the oldest football league ground in the world.

Every child has the ability to learn and grow. Mr. White, an education expert, firmly believes in this. On many occasions, he has been telling a true story of his experiences to many young teachers who have just joined the profession. 

Mr. White used to work in a remote high school for several years, teaching literature. He was an enthusiastic teacher and that rubbed off on all the children. A little girl named Meredith impressed him the most. The girl was a very well educated girl with a lively mind, a girl with ambition. 

The seventeen-year-old girl always wore a bright smile. However, she suffered from a disease and had to use a walker most of the time. People didn't speak to her very often. Maybe it was because she looked different and people didn't know how to approach her. Meredith usually broke the ice with people she met with a big "Hi".

Mr. White was particularly concerned about this student. He hoped that other students could actively approach her, but he never had a suitable opportunity. As a teacher, there are some things that cannot be clearly stated, especially in class when Meredith was present. 

In one class, Mr. White gave the students an assignment (作业) to recite (背诵) a poem. He knew that poem was difficult for students to master. Mr. White only made the assignment worth a very small part of their total grade since he knew most of his students wouldn't do it anyway.

In the class, one by one each student failed to correctly recite the poem. Finally, annoyed and half kidding, Mr. White said that the next student who couldn't recite the poem had to do three push-ups (俯卧撑).

To his surprise, Meredith was next! Mr. White was at a loss for a moment, but he couldn't take back what he had just said. After all, Meredith once told him not to have special demands on her.
