Many holidays are centered around surrounding yourself with family members and gathering in large groups, so it can be tough to enjoy your holidays all by yourself. However, spending a holiday alone can actually be more enjoyable and you might even find that you like it more.
Limit your technology use. If you're spending your holidays alone, it might be attractive to stay completely connected to your social media and email. So, try turning off your phone and computer to focus on yourself throughout the day instead of others.
Holidays offer you a good chance to award yourself for your hard work. Whether you go out to your favorite restaurant or cook at home, allow yourself to enjoy a big meal. After that, plan an outing to the movies, a museum or a park to relax. Also, giving yourself a gift is a great idea.
Volunteer somewhere. If you live near a shelter, reach out to see if they need help during the holidays. If you already volunteer somewhere, ask if you can come in on your day off. If you volunteer somewhere and you enjoy the experience, consider volunteering more often.
Dive into a creative project. You can draw, paint or make paper cuttings—anything that makes you feel accomplished. If you need to get holiday gifts for people, you could use your crafting skills to make some for them.
A. Treat yourself.
B. Get a creative technology-related gift.
C. However, a real break means limiting your technology use.
D. There are many reasons why you should spend holidays alone.
E. If you have a creative outlet, dive in and make something special.
F. Giving back is what holidays are about and it probably makes you feel good.
G. Here are a few things you can do on your own to make your holidays special.

Wild elephants wander across the crowded flatland of India; the forested river banks through fields in Brazil; a ribbon (缎带) of green spreads across Europe where the Iron Curtain used to be. Using such wildlife corridors (走廊) to link up larger but isolated (孤立的) protected areas is the most widely used method for stopping biodiversity decline (生物多样性衰退), with millions of dollars spent creating and protecting them every year. But has enthusiasm for a neat idea got ahead of the science?
As wild habitat is broken into isolated parts by farms, roads and settlements, we need to link them up with corridors of green. Then even if the entire habitat can't be recreated, old migration (迁徙) patterns can be brought back, escape routes created ahead of climate change and — perhaps most importantly — isolated populations can interbreed (杂交), improving their genetic (基因的) diversity and their ability to survive.
Recently, Paul Beier, a biologist from Northern Arizona University, and his colleague Andrew Gregory, warned that "in spite of much research, there is little evidence that protection corridors work as expected." There is, they say, plenty of evidence that wild animals will move through corridors. But supporters of corridors want, and claim, much more than this. They say that animals don't just go for a walk in their protection woods, but that they move in forever and interbreed with neighbouring populations. In this way corridors supposedly linked isolated and endangered populations into an interbreeding — and much more powerful — whole.
Such claims sometimes hold up. In the United Kingdom, the expansion (扩张) of Kielder Forest in the 1960s provided a link between isolated populations of endangered red squirrels. Genes from isolated populations have now "spread through hundreds of forest parts" across 100 kilometers and more. But the Kielder Forest is much wider than an ordinary corridor. Few studies have looked for gene exchange in corridors; even fewer have found it. One study researched the genetic diversity of small marsupials (有袋类动物) in a narrow forest corridor crossing 4.5 kilometers of grassland in Queensland, Australia. It found that genetically distinct populations had kept on staying at either end. Mixing was impossible.
Other studies have shown that protection corridors work. But most have looked at short corridors of 100 meters through largely natural landscape. "That species can travel along short corridors in a natural setting doesn't mean that they will be successful travelling along much longer corridors which are in a landscape greatly affected by human beings," says Gregory, "still less that such movements occur frequently enough to allow enough gene exchange to occur so that the connected habitat blocks function as one population."
Perhaps we shouldn't make the perfect the enemy of the good. Is any corridor surely better than none? But consider this. The edges of wild areas are known danger zones for wildlife, where enemies and diseases may invade (侵略). Linking two existing protected areas with a long narrow corridor may uncover it to greater danger along these edges. Unless the benefit exceeds (超过) the threat, then there is serious possibility to do harm.
(1)、We can infer from Paragraph 1 that people might ____.A、pay too much attention to biodiversity B、be using wrong ways to protect wildlife C、be too idealistic about protection corridors D、have given too much protection to wildlife(2)、According to Paragraph 2, wildlife corridors were put forward because of ____.A、their isolation B、human activities C、climate change D、alien animals(3)、Which of the following would B eier most likely agree with?A、We should give up wildlife corridors. B、Animals don't like to walk in corridors. C、We need more evidence to support how corridors can work. D、Corridors can link isolated animals into an interbreeding whole.(4)、Kielder Forest is mentioned in Paragraph 4 as an example of the ____.A、primary corridor B、unsuccessful corridor C、ordinary corridor D、non-typical corridor(5)、What kind of corridor is supposed to be effective according to Paragraph 5?A、Short and set in natural landscape. B、Long and set in affected landscape. C、Long and set in natural landscape. D、Short and set in affected landscape.(6)、What's the author's attitude to wildlife corridors?A、Supportive. B、Doubtful. C、Disapproving. D、Unconcerned. -

The Door-to-Door Bookstore, whose author is Carsten Henn, translated from the German by Melody Shaw, is an undoubtedly emotional, inspiring novel about friendships between generations developed through books.
Carl Kollhoff, a 72-year-old bookseller in southern Germany, is beloved among his customers for finding just the right books for them. But his role is threatened when a new boss is determined to push out the star employee.
One of the limited highlights of Carl's life is to deliver books every evening to a handful of shut-in customers. The selections are made by their stated preferences—for happy endings, tragedy, philosophical works and so on. Trouble happens when a pretty wise (and a little annoying) motherless 9-year-old girl tags along with him on his rounds. She decides Carl is not actually giving his customers what they really need, and comes up with a plan to correct this.
Like Carl's backpack, Henn manages to fill his novel with books without weighing it down. Chapter titles suggest that classics are involved: The Stranger, The Red and the Black, Great Expectations. Carl, who is terrible with names, assigns a literary character to each customer—Mr. Darcy, Mrs. Longstocking, The Reader—to help him keep them straight.
We gradually come to know these townsfolk: the abused wife, and the ambitious writer with the soothing voice who is paid to read classics to cigar factory workers.
The Door-to-Door Bookstore is also filled with amusing observations. Carl divides readers into hares (野兔), who race through books; fish, who allow books to carry them along on their current; curious lapwings (鸟头麦鸡), who jump ahead to see the ending first; and tortoises, who fall asleep each night after a single page and take months to get through a book, having to turn back repeatedly to check what they've forgotten.
Readers will have fun finding themselves in these pages.
(1)、Where is the text most probably taken from?A、A review of a book. B、An essay on literature classics. C、An introduction to a bookstore. D、A biography of Carl Kollhoff.(2)、What is the main idea of the novel?A、The takeover of a family business by a young girl. B、The friendship between Carl and a 9-year-old girl. C、Carl's struggle to find the right books for his customers. D、The competition among different bookstores in Germany.(3)、Why does the author of the passage mention some classics?A、To compare the book with them. B、To stress the importance of them. C、To help readers understand the book. D、To show their popularity.(4)、What does the author mean by saying "Readers will have fun finding themselves in these pages"?A、Readers will relate to the characters and situations in the novel. B、Readers will find satisfaction in correctly guessing the endings of the books. C、Readers will enjoy the different ways people read books. D、Readers will be amused by the diverse personalities of the customers. -

A middle school in Union County, New Jersey, is forcing its students to stay disconnected in class, by prohibiting cellphones. Maxson Middle School Principal (校长) Kevin Stansbury put forward the phone ban last week after he noticed many students were too focused on their phone's to pay attention to their lessons.
He purchased Yondr pouches (小袋) for the school. When students come into class each morning, they place their phones in the pouch, which is then locked up tight. It can only be opened using a special device at the end of the day. The ban on mobile devices applies not just during class time but during breaks, with the only exceptions being in times of emergency or in cases of students who need such device's to help with disabilities.
The program originally met with resistance (抵制) from students and parents, so the process was not that smooth. But teachers and administrators say that the program is making a big difference. "Students were talking and laughing and there were no cellphones other than being carried in the pouches," Stansbury says. And more and more students have realized it's just better for everyone because they'll understand how it feels to get more work done instead of paying attention to the phone.
Teacher via Cummings says she even noticed that students used to give up quickly and just look for answers on their phone's but they now try to figure them out themselves. "Everyone is socializing and eating lunch together. That's what I wasn't seeing enough of when phone usage was at its worst," she adds.
Maxson Middle School is currently the only one in the district to use these pouches. Kevin Stansbury also called on all the schools in the community that it's worth paying close attention to cell phone issued at secondary schools and taking action when necessary.
(1)、Why did the principal put forward the phone ban?A、Because students were connected in class. B、Because students weren't focused on school work. C、Because students were talking and laughing in class. D、Because students were paying attention to their lessons.(2)、How is the program carried out?A、By locking students' phones in pouches. B、By satisfying students and parents. C、By asking students to do more work. D、By making students eat lunch together.(3)、What can be inferred about the ban?A、It has brought little change. B、It has changed all students. C、It may solve students' healthy problems. D、It may be carried out in other schools. -

The waves crashed heavily against the rocks, the stormy sea swallowing the once-powerful ship. The only survivor of the shipwreck was brought by the currents to the shore of a small, uninhabited island. His desperate cries for help mixed with the roar of the storm, only to be swallowed by the ocean.
Exhausted and disoriented, he lay on the sandy beach, thanking whatever forces had saved his life. After he surveyed the surroundings, he realized the harsh reality of his isolation. He prayed to God and scanned the horizon for any sign of rescue, but no help appeared. In the midst of despair, he gradually awakened to the fact that he had to survive on this uninhabited island on his own. Driven by great determination, the survivor managed to build a shelter with the driftwood to protect him from the elements, and to store his few possessions.
Days turned into weeks, and weeks into months. The survivor, once stuck in his isolation, started exploring the island's hidden treasures. His routine became a dull cycle of hunting for food, collecting rainwater, and scanning the horizon for any sign of rescue. But the vast expanse of the ocean offered no comfort, no ship on the horizon to save him. 中 国
Despite his loneliness, the survivor clung to hope. The sunrises brought a glimmer of optimism, and he kept scanning the horizon, searching for any trace of rescue.
Then, one fateful day, as he returned from a fruitless search for food, he was greeted by a devastating sight—his shelter was on fire, and the smoke was rolling up to the sky! The worst had appened—the fire had consumed all his possessions, leaving him nothing but the clothes on his back. Desperation and disbelief seized him as he watched the smoke rise to the sky, a cruel demonstration of his misfortune.

How to Feel at Peace
Is feeling truly peaceful a pipe dream? Nope! With a little work, you can feel calm, cool, and collected (just like you deserve to). These work based on personal preference, so just find one that works for you!
Release what you cannot control.
This is the most important part of feeling at peace and the first place you should always start.90%of the time, when we're worried about something or stressed out, the source of our anxiety is really something that we have no control over. If you can't affect the outcome then there is no point in worrying about something.
Get an inspiration from nature.
Go sit out in an area nearby. Listen to the trees. Watch the animals. Do they seem worried about what their brother did last Christmas? Do the trees seem to notice when it starts to rain?
Create goals.
Having a goal that you can work for can really help when you're feeling lost and aimless in life. Find something that you want for yourself and then figure out what you have to do to pursue it. You'll find an inner peace when you're working with all your soul devoted to a single goal.
When other people make us angry, it is usually because we cannot understand why they're doing something that's making us angry. Instead of blowing up at someone or stressing yourself out, try to see things from their side of the table. Think about why they did what they did... and remember that we're all people with our own problems and our own dreams.
A. Forgive yourself.
B. Find the humanity in all people.
C. All you can do in life is to try your best and let fate take its course.
D. Happiness is on the horizon, and we're here to show you what to do.
E. No. Nature adapts and embraces every twist and turn in life and you should too.
F. Really, what's the point in life if you don't have something to work towards, right?
G. A huge source of worry in our lives comes from when we beat ourselves up from inside.

Geothermal(地热的) power generation is one of our most stable renewable energy resources. Heat generated below the Earth's surface can provide an almost unlimited supply to power and heat homes. And while geothermal electricity only accounts for around one percent of global generation, that is set to at least triple by 2050.
The Geysers in California is the world's largest geothermal electricity complex. It produces enough electricity from its 18 power plants for 725,000 homes, totaling 20 percent of the state's renewable energy. Superheated" dry steam" is channeled from a large sandstone reservoir heated by a large magma chamber(岩浆房) more than four miles beneath the surface.
Heat is captured from its passage through the rock and the heated water converts into electricity. Cooled water is then recycled and pumped back to gather more heat. EGS (enhanced geothermal systems) technologies will open up many more sites for geothermal energy." You can effectively put a power plant anywhere," said Will Pettit, director of the Geothermal Resources Council." All you have to do is drill deep enough and you will find hot rock."
Most geothermal plants actually use a flash steam technique, where hot water(at 360F or 180C)is drawn up, passed into lower pressure tanks and flashed into steam to power a turbine(涡轮机).Binary cycle(双元循环) plants are the growth technology because they can operate at lower water temperatures and more diverse geographical locations. They use moderately hot water to heat a secondary fluid with a lower boiling point—as low as 135F—to drive turbines.
Geothermal plants already emit 11 times less carbon dioxide per unit of electricity than the average US coal power plant. They can also operate 24 hours a day to provide a solid base load for homes and businesses.
There are drawbacks too. Seismic activity around drilling wells is a factor. High investment costs are another. But the US government is backing the sector with multi-million do llar funds to push forward advanced EGS research. Geothermal energy is set to play a big part in the low-carbon electricity future.
(1)、What is the significance of EGS(enhanced geothermal systems) technologies?A、They have made geothermal energy less sustainable. B、They allow for more efficient use of geothermal resources. C、They have greatly reduced the need for drilling in geothermal sites. D、They have opened up new methods of generating electricity from water.(2)、What can be inferred from paragraph 4?A、Power plants are not affected by water. B、Hot water is used to power a turbine directly. C、Binary cycle plants are less restricted to locations. D、A flash steam technique is a must in geothermal plants.(3)、What is the writer's attitude towards geothermal power?A、Indifferent. B、Ambiguous. C、Pessimistic. D、Optimistic.(4)、What is the main idea of the article?A、Geothermal power is likely to be a great chance to sustainable power. B、Traditional power has been replaced by geothermal power in America. C、Businesses have been competing to gain an advantage in geothermal power. D、EGS technologies have come into widespread application around the world. -
12、 阅读下列短文,从每题所给的 A、B、C和D 四个选项中选出最佳选项
Do you have frightening dreams while sleeping? According to an email interview by clinical psychologist and sleep expert Dr. Michael Breus, roughly 5 percent of the general population has at least one bad dream per week. Nightmares typically happen during REM sleep, during the middle and later parts of the night.
There is no exact explanation for nightmares, but Breus says it's possible that they help the brain practise, prepare for and even anticipate difficult or dangerous experiences in waking life. Of course, it's possible that nightmares, like dreams in general, don't have a primary function—that they're a by-product of other activities in the body. But most sleep scientists think that dreams and nightmares exist for some purposes.
One study found the most common nightmare was falling, followed by dreams of being chased, feeling lost, and feeling trapped. Then why do nightmares happen?
"Certain circumstances and characteristics make some people more likely to have nightmares than others," says sleep medicine specialist Dr. Barry Krakow. He thinks people who've been traumatized(使受精神创伤) are certainly at a higher risk of nightmares. Examples are offered of those who have suffered criminal attacks, or who have been in life-threatening accidents. People with some degree of sensitivity in their biological make-up are also more likely to have bad dreams, so they're more common in people who suffer from anxiety or depression, or who use ex cess drugs or alcohol.
The traditional belief often has it that nightmares are the result of eating too much rich food before bedtime, but it is still uncertain whether this is true. One study from 2015 did find a link between eating dairy or hot foods before bedtime and having disturbing dreams, but the study authors noted that this couldn't be proven definitely because the data was self-reported and there were a lot of other factors to consider.
However, research in recent decades has shown that people who suffer from sleep disorders are also more likely to have nightmares.
(1)、What may Dr. Breus agree with about nightmares?A、They come true once in a while. B、They happen at anytime during sleep. C、They possibly help predict future events. D、They arise for some really specific purposes.(2)、Who does Dr. Krakow think tends to suffer nightmares?A、Paul who often stays up late. B、Jack who has had horrible experiences. C、Peter who is sensitive to alcohol. D、John who sleeps in a noisy environment.(3)、What can we learn from paragraph 5?A、Eating rich food before bedtime will cause nightmares. B、The data used in the 2015 study was reliable and accurate. C、The traditional belief about nightmares has been disproved. D、The link between dairy or hot food and nightmares is still uncertain.(4)、From which section of a website is the text probably taken?A、Mental health. B、Popular culture. C、Eating habits. D、Life experiences. -

On the day he almost died, Kimbal Musk had food on the brain. The Internet startup talent and restauranteur had just arrived in Jackson Hole from a conference where chef Jamie Oliver had spoken about the benefits of healthy eating. This was something Musk thought about a lot—how he might make a difference to the food industry—but beyond expanding his farm-to-table movement along with his restaurant, Musk hadn't yet broken the code. Then he went sailing down a snowy slope and fell over, breaking his neck. The left side of his body was paralyzed.
Musk eventually made a full recovery, but it involved spending two months on his back, which gave him plenty of time to come up with a plan. Since then, he has launched an initiative to put" learning gardens" in public schools across America; attracted Generation Z to the farming profession by changing shipping containers into high-tech, data-driven, year-round farms; and this year, is kicking off a new campaign to create one million at-home gardens.
Aimed at reaching low-income families, the Million Gardens Movement was inspired by the pandemic, as both a desire to feel more connected to nature and food insecurity have been at the forefront of so many people's lives. "We were getting a lot of inquiries about gardening from people that had never gardened before," says Musk." People were looking to garden for a bunch of reasons: to supplement their budget, to improve the nutritional quality of their diets, or just to cure the boredom that came with the lockdown."
The program offer s free garden kits that can be grown indoors or outdoors, and will be distributed through schools that Musk's non-profit, Big Green, has already partnered with. It also offers free courses on how to get the garden growing and fresh seeds and materials for the changing growing seasons." I grew up in the projects when I was young, in what we now call food deserts," says EVE, one of the many celebrities who have teamed up with the organization to encourage people to pick up a free garden." What I love about this is that it's not difficult. We are all able to grow something."
(1)、What does the underlined expression" broken the code" in paragraph 1 probably mean?A、broken the rule. B、found a way out. C、spared no effort. D、made up his mind.(2)、What can we learn about the Million Gardens Movement?A、It has just accomplished its target. B、It has mainly attracted young generations. C、It increases economic burdens for the poor. D、It is partly due to the lack of food security.(3)、Which of the following best describes Musk?A、Serious. B、Flexible. C、Charitable. D、Straightforward.(4)、Why is EVE taken as an example?A、To share his experience in a food desert. B、To encourage people to start a free garden. C、To clarify the reason why he loves a garden. D、To demonstrate the program to be non-profit. -

15、 第二节读后续写 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Marmi, my big sister, was eagerly looking for a pup(小狗) to look after and love all her life, so she would ask Mummy many times for a pup of her own, but the answer was always no. You see, my mum is not very fond of dogs, never has been, and always says they're too big a responsibility. She's just not a dog person.
Well, that didn't stop my sister from looking or hoping for a dog. She used to search online for her favourite breed(品种). Until one day Marni found some Cavapoo pups advertised for sale. She immediately showed Mummy and begged to go and see them. Not sure how my sister persuaded her, but to our surprise, Mummy said we could go and have a look at them but not to get high hopes. Marni rushed everyone in the car before Mummy changed her mind. Off we sped to the advertised breeder's house which luckily wasn't too far. We got to the house and I bet I could hear my sister's heart dancing with excitement. As we rang the doorbell, we could hear cute little barks coming from inside. We went in and saw lots of little black pups excitedly jumping around. There were other people there too, so we needed to choose one fast if you know what I mean. It was rather crowded but the breeder let us hold and cuddle(搂抱) the pups. The breeder handed a little confident pup to Marni. The little pup seemed an old friend with my sister. But after a lot of cuddles, Mummy said we had to go and would have to think about it.
Paragraph 1:
