At that moment, I just felt guilty. I'd brought my family along for the day: my parents, sisters, their partners and children. I'd invited them along to watch me die. I prayed for a second chance, for a miracle that would allow me to go back and redo the moments leading up to the jump. I prayed….

We hit the ground. I was immediately breathless, and an unimaginable pain shot up my back as we bounced into a lake on a golf course. I was somehow still alive. Gathering all my strength, I turned to face Bill. His screams of agony (极度痛苦) filled the air. From neck down, I could barely move.

We were found by some golfers, who quickly summoned emergency services. My mother and sisters cried uncontrollably as Bill was put into a helicopter, and I was placed into an ambulance.

What is the world's (small) country? You could decide to look at populations or the actual areas countries occupy to find your answer. In this case, the answer is same either way: Vatican City.

So, exactly how tiny is this country? Vatican City is a mere 0. 2 square miles (0. 52 square kilometers), is smaller than New York City's Central Park. Nevertheless, it has its own post office, telephone system, radio station, banking system and even its own currency, the Vatican euro. About 800 people live here.

Vatican City is an independent country, it's not recognized by the United Nations. Instead, Vatican City (consider) a permanent nonmember observer, which means it's welcome to sit in the UN's General Assembly and access most UN (serve) and benefits, but it can't vote. And that's just fine with Vatican City.

Unlike Palestine, which has (repeat) applied to become a full member of the UN, Vatican City has never done so. In fact, it's the only nation ever (decline) UN membership. As cities develop, some sources of carbon emissions (排放) may be hard to notice for most people, for example, the bricks used in buildings. US company Biomason has produced bio-based cement (水泥), which can sharply cut emissions during traditional cement production.

"We grow cement the same way nature does," wrote the company's website. How the cement is "grown" is based on biomineralization, the process by which living organisms produce minerals. One example of biomineralization is coral reefs. Massive reef structures are formed when each individual stony coral produces calcium carbonate, a kind of mineral. Although the stony corals are tiny, one reef structure, built by millions of stony corals, can grow to weigh several tons.

This biobased cement alternative is called Biolith. During the production of each Biolith tile, bacteria and nutrients are mixed with sand. Organisms then produce calcium carbonate by absorbing a liquid made of calcium and nitrogen (氮). However, the process doesn't change the size of the Biolith tile instead, it increases the density. The produced calcium carbonate forms bridges between the grains, strengthening the unit from within. It takes less than 72 hours to let a Biolith tile "grow" fully, while traditional concrete requires about 28 days to make a brick.

The company aims to "remove 25 percent of carbon emissions from the concrete industry by 2030," according to its website. Traditional concrete is made of crushed stones. The process involves heating the stone to temperatures greater than 1,300 ℃, during which carbon dioxide is emitted. The manufacture of Biolith, however, doesn't involve heating, which greatly reduces carbon emissions. The company plans on increasing the use of bio-based bricks, covering 35,000 square meters in Europe by the end of this year.

Math anxiety — a negative emotional reaction to the core subject — causes fear, physical suffering and behavior problems among young pupils, according to a University of Cambridge study. In ordinary life, many people experience some degree of discomfort when confronted with a math problem, ranging from mild tension to strong fear.

Some people also experience physical symptoms such as sweaty palms or a racing heart. They may then try to avoid numbers-related situations, meaning they are held back from pursuing careers related to the subject, such as science, technology or engineering, according to The Guardian.

Relief comes from the fact that those with math anxiety aren't destined to be bad at math. "If a child has math anxiety, don't assume that they're not good at math. They may have had a really bad experience with math," Daniel Ansari, the senior author of the study told The London Free Press. "Students with math anxiety are not cognitively (认知地) disadvantaged. "

Math doesn't come easy, no matter how clever you are. Leonardo da Vinci, the famous Italian artist, was a huge fan of mathematics. But his notebooks show that Da Vinci couldn't do fractions (分数). He could never grasp, for instance, that dividing a number by one-quarter is the same as multiplying by four, resulting in a higher number than the original.

Some may characterize it as a love-hate relationship, even though I believe the bond between us is more than that. Of course, on the "hate" side there were plenty of frustrating hours spent practicing, the forced performances for relatives, the trimmed fingernails. And the responsibility I had to shoulder, as my family sacrificed a lot for me to have piano lessons, because I had talent. My teachers said so and, truthfully, my heart said so, too. But all too often it felt like a burden.

There was also love on that piano bench. There were times when I could feel the music ring through me. I could feel it vibrate through my fingers. The connection between two people when performing a duet was beautiful. When my music landed on my audience it made me want to play forever.

But my musical talent did not survive my teenage years. It was no competition for the freedom I sought and eventually fought for. When I had a home of my own, the piano mostly sat unloved or at least unused, feeling fingers on the keys only during Christmas and when my own children took piano lessons.

I know every inch of this piano. I spent years of my life in front of this piano. Awaiting my free will to ripen enough to release me from lessons. Awaiting my life to begin. Awaiting my mother to leave the room so I could secretly read my book while practicing scales.

It feels like I am giving away the family pet. So here I sit playing my last tune before the movers take the piano away and surprisingly there lies a growing desire for something else. It is time to clear the air to let in a different melody. Time to say, "Thank you for being part of my life," take a bow and leave the stage… with one final note rising up alongside the dust in a sunbeam.
