Impressions from the 3D Printing Exhibition

The opening ceremony of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games on the evening of Feb 4 was different, yet spectacular（引人入胜的）. The audiences were treated to a pared-down（简约的） ceremony,  the large-scale artistic performances that marked the 2008 opening ceremony,  it was no less symbolic—symbolic of a shared future for humankind. The final torch（火炬）at the snowflake-themed ceremony was small, yet the flames conveyed significant messages of  (green) Olympic Games. The use of  (advance) technologies such as artificial intelligence, machine vision, 5G and cloud broadcasting  (add) to the novelty of the opening ceremony. The performances, carrying forward the theme of global peace and a shared future for humankind, focused on environmental protection and human health,_ (highlight) the importance of sports to instill (灌输)new confidence in the international community  (contain) the pandemic（瘟疫）. Through the opening ceremony on Feb. 4, people can clearly see China's pursuit of building a peaceful world, its  ( reflect) of the new Olympic motto of "Faster, Higher, Stronger, Together" and the Beijing Winter Games' motto of "together for a shared future".

As a writer, I miss rejection slips. Not that I enjoyed receiving those pre-printed slips of paper, but at least when I got one, I was pretty sure that a flesh-and-blood 1 had put it in the envelope. And there was always the chance I might see a handwritten sentence on the bottom, 2 the piece almost made it. When an editor at McCall's wrote, "I'm afraid I have to say no on this 3 piece, but try me again on another, would you?" It was almost as 4 to me as if she had said, "We'll 5 it and here is an advance for you". 

Nowadays, rejection slips seem to have disappeared with the use of online submissions. Most editors don't feel it a must to 6 they have received, read, or considered your work because they receive so many 7 each day. 

For me, there are three 8 of rejection slip pain. The first is 9 brought on by finding a flat "no" on a 10 piece of paper, then followed by anger (how could they 11 a piece that is obviously so much 12 than most of the stuff they print), and, finally, rebirth: I will live to 13 a new piece another day.

Learning to 14 rejection seems like part of growing up as a writer. Despite the many letters of acceptance I have received, my folder of "Noteworthy Rejection Slips" is far 15 than that of "Noteworthy Acceptances", which indicates to me the fact: I still have some growing up to do.

Giving generously and receiving gratefully make it easier to live happily with others.

Let me start with the idea of giving generously._For example, my husband and I have family members who only contact us when they need money. We usually accept their requests, but we rarely receive a "thank you". Most people would say that my husband and I are being used, and I suppose we are. But when we give, we shouldn't be giving for the purpose of getting gratitude or praise. Rather, we should be giving because it is a good thing.

The good news is that when we lead our life being nice to others, our life runs more smoothly.But if you practice being generous, most of your relationships will improve.

At the same time, we should remember to receive gratefully. I truly believe that you cant say "thank you" enough when you receive.

Parents can feel unappreciated by their children, and teachers can feel unappreciated by their students. Do you think it unnecessary to thank them when receiving just because a task is part of someone's job description？ That's wrong！

It is good for us to say "thank you" because we regularly need to remind ourselves how lucky we are. And hearing those two words can make us feel great for days.

If you are looking for a way to improve your life, I can give you one: Give generously and receive gratefully.

Nowadays, the world is slowly becoming a high-tech society and we are now surrounded by technology. Facebook and Twitter are innovative tools; text messaging is still a somewhat existing phenomenon and even e-mail is only a flashing spot on the screen when compared with our long history of snail mail. Now we adopt these tools to the point of essentialness, and only rarely consider how we are more fundamentally affected by them. 

Social media, texting and e-mail all make it much easier to communicate, gather and pass information, but they also present some dangers. By removing any real human engagement, they enable us to develop our abnormal self-love without the risk of disapproval or criticism. To use a theatrical metaphor (隐喻), these new forms of communication provide a stage on which we can each create our own characters, hidden behind a fourth wall of tweets, status updates and texts. This unreal state of unconcern can become addictive as we separate ourselves a safe distance from the cruelty of our fleshly lives, where we are imperfect, powerless and insignificant. In essence, we have been provided not only the means to be more free, but also to become new, to create and project a more perfect self to the world. As we become more reliant on these tools, they become more a part of our daily routine, and so we become more restricted in this fantasy.

So it is that we live in a cold era, where names and faces represent two different levels of closeness, where working relationships occur only through the magic of email and where love can start or end by text message. An environment such as this reduces interpersonal relationships to mere digital exchanges.

Would a celebrity have been so daring to do something dishonorable if he had had to do it in person? Doubtful. It seems he might have been lost in a fantasy world that ultimately convinced himself into believing the digital self could obey different rules and regulations, as if he could continually push the limits of what's acceptable without facing the consequences of "real life."

Jorg Muller, an ecologist at the University of Würzburg, with his colleagues, proposes a way to measure the biodiversity—listen to the jungle by AI, in a paper published in Nature Communications.

The rainforests are very important and always alive with the sounds of animals, which is useful to ecologists. When it comes to measuring the biodiversity of a piece of land, listening out for animal caller is more effective than uncovering the bushes looking for tracks and paw prints. The latter analysis method is time-consuming, and it requires an expert pair of ears. Muller's idea was to apply the principle of smartphone apps which can identify the sounds of birds, bats and mammals to conservation work.

The researchers took recordings from across 43 sites in the rainforests. Some sites were relatively primitive, old-growth forests. Others were areas that had just been cleared for pasture(牧场) recently. And some other original forests had been cleared but then abandoned, allowing themselves to regrow. The various calls were identified by an expert,and then used to construct a list of the species present. As expected, the longer the land had been free from agricultural activity, the greater biodiversity it hosted. Then it was the computer's turn. "We found that the AI tools could identify the sounds as well as the experts," says Dr. Muller.

Of course, not everything in a rainforest makes a noise. Dr. Muller and his colleagues used light traps to catch night-flying insects, and DNA analysis to identify them. They found that the diversity of noisy animals was a reliable representative for the diversity of the quieter ones, too.

Besides measuring the biodiversity, the results are also expected to be applied to outside ecology departments. Under pressure from their customers, firms like L'Oreal, a make-up company, and Shell, an oil firm, have been spending money on forest restoration projects around the world. Dr. Muller hopes that an automated approach to checking on the results could help monitor such efforts, and give a standard way to measure whether they are working as well as their sponsors say.

For the first time in the competition's history, two athletes are sharing a gold medal at the World Athletics Championships.

The USA's Katie Moon and Australia's Nina Kennedy found themselves in a difficult situation during the women's pole vault (撑竿跳) final. They both cleared 4.90 meters, but neither managed to clear 4. 95 meters on any of their three attempts.

Kennedy says she looked at Moon and said, "Hey, girl, maybe you want to share this?"

"And the relief on her face — and you could see it on my face — and it was mutual (相互的). And yeah, absolutely incredible to share a medal with Katie Moon. You know, we've been friends for so long, so it's super special," Kennedy told reporters after the final.

Thousands of fans were on their feet at the National Athletics Centre in Budapest, Hungary, for Date 5of the competition, which hosts almost 2,000 athletes from 192 countries. The dramatic event lasted two hours and ten minutes. Katie Moon told FloTrack that as the final progressed, it became clear that very little separated the two athletes.

As the competition was going. I kept thinking. "I don't want this to go to a jump-off (加赛)," Moon told sports journalist Anderson Emerole. "This competition was the toughest battle I'd say that I've had. It was very emotionally draining (消耗), and I think that's why both of us were feeling like. 'We're not really feeling the jump- off right now.'"

It was Moon's second consecutive gold medal at the World Championships. She also w on an Olympic gold in Tokyo in 2021. With a personal record of 4. 95meters. Moon appeared to be the favorite.

Kennedy, however, did not back down. Not only did she set a new personal record, but she also broke the Australian record by eight centimeters when she sailed over the 4.90-meter high bar. She held back tears after the career-defining leap.

"It was a miracle to get the gold. I think a miracle happened tonight." Kennedy told reporters.

Bird's Nest Fern (蕨)

The bird's nest fern is a good choice for anyone with a house that wouldn't support sun-loving species. It's a hardy fern variety adapting to living on forest floors, where the air tends to be cool and damp. It likes to be misted as well, but this doesn't always mean you need a misting bottle—spraying (喷洒) it in the sink or hanging it near a shower often works as well.

Chinese Money Plant

This is a flowering species that might be most appropriate for experienced plant gardeners looking for a new challenge. It prefers a moderate amount of indirect light, and tends to dry out slightly between watering sessions. It produces new plants easily without any input, directly from its root system. These can coexist in the same pot for a time.

Resurrection Plant

This native of the Mexican desert has adapted to surviving in extreme drought by curling (蜷缩) into a ball and remaining in seemingly lifeless state for years, if necessary. In this form, it can be transported by the wind across the dry landscape to areas with water. It will revive within hours in a shallow bowl of water, unfolding and transforming into a fresh and green moss (苔藓).

Snake Plant

This is a striking houseplant that can be an especially good option for new plant owners who you might not trust to keep a plant alive. It grows happily in almost any condition. While it prefers bright light, it doesn't mind shade or even artificial light. Plus, thanks to its thick, fleshy leaves, it stores water with remarkable efficiency, which makes it survive without water in the earth.

Valentine's Day in China

It is really difficult to know the exact time  Western Valentine's Day was introduced into China. However, Western Valentine's Day is (wide) celebrated in urban areas where there are a lot of commercial events, especially in big cities. Valentine's Day is not so popular in small towns, small (city) or the countryside.

So far, Chinese people (accept) the tradition of celebrating Valentine's Day, such as (exchange) gifts, having a romantic dinner, watching a movie in the evening or even registering a marriage if Valentine's Day falls on a workday.

On this day, larger amounts of chocolate will be on sale in supermarkets,  compared with the case during the ordinary days, cinemas will be much (busy) and the price of flowers can also be a lot higher. Many restaurants will have special menus, especially those in some big cities. If you want to have a smooth (celebrate) on Valentine's Day, remember (make) reservations as far in advance as you can.

Chinese people have also made some changes to the Western way of celebrating Valentine's Day. For some couples, the husband may prepare a hearty dinner or buy a fancy gift  his wife on this day to show his gratitude.
