It can be a challenge to learn a new language like English.  Here are some tips to help you become a better English learners. 

Studying every day comes first. Learning any new language is a time-consuming process, more than 300 hours according to some linguists (语言学家). Rather than memorize passively for a few hours or review once or twice a week, most experts say short, regular study sessions (一段时间) are more effective. .

Keep things fresh. Instead of focusing on one single task for the entire study session, try mixing things up. Study a little grammar, then do a short listening exercise, and then perhaps read an article on the same topic. Don't do too much, and 20 minutes on three different exercises is plenty..

 Talking with English natives, watching English movies or listening to English music whenever you have a chance can also help you unconsciously do better in pronunciation, speech patterns as well as listening. 

Writing exercises are a great way to practice. Take 30 minutes at the end of the class or study to write down what happened during your day.  By making a habit of writing, you will find your writing skills improve over time.

Social media allow teenagers to create online identities, communicate with others and build social networks. These networks can provide teenagers with valuable support. Teenagers also use social media for entertainment and self-expression. And the platforms can expose teenagers to current events, allow them to communicate across geographic barriers and teach them about different kinds of subjects, including healthy behaviors. However, social media use can also negatively affect teenagers, distracting them, influencing their sleep, and exposing them to bullying (恐吓), rumor (谣言) spreading, untrue views of other people's lives and peer pressure.

There are steps you can take to encourage responsible use of social media and limit some of its negative effects.

Set reasonable limits. Talk to your teenager about how to avoid letting social media affect his or her activities, sleep, meals or homework. Encourage a bedtime routine that avoids electronic media use, and keep cellphones and iPads out of teenagers' bedrooms. Set an example by following these rules yourself.

Monitor your teenager's accounts. Let your teenager know that you'll be regularly checking his or her social media accounts. You might aim to do so once a week or more. And make sure you follow through.

Explain what's not OK. Discourage your teenager from gossiping, spreading rumors, bullying or damaging someone's reputation—online or otherwise. Talk to your teenager about what is appropriate and safe to share on social media.

Encourage face-to-face contact with friends. This is particularly important for teenagers who are vulnerable to social anxiety disorder.

Talk about social media. Talk about your own social media habits. Ask your teenager how he or she is using social media and how it makes him or her feel. Remind your teenager that social media is full of unrealistic images.

If you think your teenager is experiencing signs or symptoms of anxiety or depression related to social media use, talk to your child's health care provider immediately.

In a world-record effort to help save a valuable sea creature, Australian scientists have released(放生) hundreds of baby seahorses into the wild. The tiny seahorses are endangered, and the scientists hope the new seahorses will help their numbers grow.

Seahorses get their name because they look a bit like horses. They aren't great swimmers, even though they're fish. They often use their tails to hold onto something in the water. They mostly live in warm, shallow waters around the world. They are often found in coral reefs, in beds of seagrass, and areas where rivers empty into the sea. Seahorses form an important part of the ocean's food chain. They eat tiny sea creatures and are eaten by bigger sea animals.

Many kinds of seahorses are often threatened by the human actions. Sometimes they're caught and sold as pets. They are also caught by accident when people are trying to catch other fish.

To begin the project, scientists collected three pregnant seahorses in January. Those seahorses were brought back to the aquarium (水族馆) in Sydney. After the babies were born, the scientists kept them there for five months, feeding the baby seahorses shrimps (小虾) to help them grow strong. Scientist Mitchell Brennan says, "They don't have a stomach, so they have to eat constantly."

About a month before the young seahorses were released, the scientists created eight underwater "hotels" for them. The hotels look like cages, providing a safe place for the seahorses to develop. Putting the hotels into the sea early allowed the cages to be covered with small sea life that can help provide food for the seahorses.

This is the fifth time the scientists have released seahorses into the area, and this time was a record. Around 380 seahorses were released. The researchers put tiny tags (标记) under the skin of many of the seahorses to help track them in the future.

The first day of school is a special milestone for any student, but for one family in Wisconsin, it's extra special. Two sisters Mia and Samantha, their mom Amy and grandmother Christy attended Carthage College together this fall.

Amy said, "I'm really proud to be watching my daughters grow up and be more mature and have new experiences, and very happy to see my mom achieve something that she's always wanting to do."

Mia shared that she always felt her two older role models would return to school someday. To 19-year-old Samantha, her mom and grandmother's entry to university was rather a surprise. "It was clear that Mia and I were admitted. And then all of a sudden, they were admitted too," Samantha remembered. "It was really surprising. And I didn't expect it."

Amy, a mother of five children, has worked at Carthage College for over two decades and wanted to be enrolled one day. Calling herself "Carthage's biggest fan", she said she felt like she now had the time to pursue higher studies.

As for 71-year-old Christy, she retired three years ago but is still eager to learn. In fact, she still continues to support and volunteer at local nonprofits. Christy said she was also inspired by her son Joshua, who is pursuing his second master's degree. She has decided to go forward with a master's degree in business, design and innovation alongside her daughter.

The women are inspirational to anyone who doesn't want their age to block their dreams. Amy advised everyone to go after what they want because life is too short. "Put that doubt aside and just go for it," she said. Christy added, "Never hesitate to follow your heart. In my life, it has led me to my greatest opportunities and has also built my greatest strengths. If I always stayed in my comfort zone, I wouldn't be where I am today."

A short period of sleep taken during the day is known as a nap. Naps don't just have benefits for adults at work, though. They could also help pupils to make the most of their school day. Studies have shown that a 20 to 30-minute "beauty sleep" makes people more alert and focused. This improves people's ability to remember new information, which would help school children concentrate during lessons. Experts say that napping also improves brain functions, such as memory and the ability to complete difficult tasks.

The school day starts early, which means that pupils don't always get enough sleep because there's no chance to have a lie-in（睡懒觉. Adding naptime during the school day would help exhausted pupils to make up for any sleep they've lost from getting up so early.

There are long-term benefits to taking a short nap, too. According to a recent study from University College London, the brains of people who have regular naps are bigger than those who don't. People's brains naturally shrink (萎缩）when they grow old, and the results showed that little sleeps can help people's brains to age more slowly.

Although a nap can seem like a good idea, going to sleep for too long can actually make you feel worse. It's not very pleasant to wake up from a daytime nap feeling confused and sleepy. Napping during the day can also have a negative impact on how well you sleep at night. This can create a cycle of not being able to sleep well at night, leaving you feeling even more tired in the daytime. Sleep expert Dr Clete Kushida said, "It's generally recommended to maximize(最大化） sleep at night."

Another consideration is that there really isn't time in the school day for pupils to go to sleep. Some parents and teachers are concerned that it would cause children to miss too much lesson time. Pupils might take advantage of the system and use their need for a nap as an excuse to get out of lessons.

"Don't get dirty!" was once often shouted by parents angrily watching their children ruin their best clothes. It was unavoidable that children's whites would turn brown before the day was over. 

Today, many parents may secretly wish their children had the chance to pick up a bit of dirt. With the rise of city life, and the attraction of video games and social media, contact with nature is much less than in the past. For many, there is simply no opportunity to get muddy. According to recent research, the dirt outside is teaming with friendly microorganisms (微生物) that can train the immune (免疫的) system and build the body against illnesses, such as anxiety. 

These findings show that outdoor exercise is not only beneficial because of the chance to run around free—but that certain natural materials, such as soil and mud, also have powerful microorganisms which have positive effect on children's health. Outdoor play can also offer valuable learning experiences. For example, the act of rubbing and shaping materials like mud or sand can help children develop their senses and movement. 

Such activities—away from the house or classroom—may also help children to find ways to deal with emotions that may be hard to explore in other environments. So-called "Sandtray Therapy (沙盘疗法)", which includes using sand to express one's thoughts and feelings, is an accepted form of guidance for children who are struggling to speak out their inner emotions. 

Surprisingly, people who spent most of their childhood in the countryside show a better reply to stressful events like public speaking compared with those who grew up in cities. "The people who grew up in cities are kind of ‘walking time bombs' when facing the stress we meet today. However, people who have spent lots of time in nature since childhood are generally stronger in recovery and more positive." says Christopher Lowry, a professor of University of Colorado Boulder.

There is an old saying in China that goes, "The days of the Sanjiu period are the coldest days. " "Sanjiu period", which is in Minor(较小的) Cold, refers to the third nine-day period (the 19th to the 27th day) after the day of the Winter Solstice(冬至). There are many different customs related to Minor Cold in China.

Eating hotpot

During Minor Cold people should eat some hot food to benefit the body and defend against the cold weather. Winter is the best time to have hotpot and braised mutton with soy sauce. But it is important to notice that too much spicy food may cause health problems.

Eating huangyacai

In Tianjin, there is a custom to have huangyacai, a kind of Chinese cabbage, during Minor Cold. There are large amounts of vitamins A and B in huangyacai. As huangyacai is fresh and tender, it is fit for frying, roasting and braising.

Eating glutinous rice(糯米饭)

According to tradition, the Cantonese eat glutinous rice in the morning during Minor Cold. Cantonese people add some fried preserved(腌制的) pork, sausage and peanuts and mix them into the rice.

Eating vegetable rice

In ancient times, people in Nanjing took Minor Cold quite seriously, but as time went by, the celebration of Minor Cold gradually disappeared. However, the custom of eating vegetable rice is still followed today. The rice is steamed and is unspeakably delicious. Among the ingredients( 原 料 ), aijiaohuang (a kind of green vegetable), sausage and salted duck are the specialties in Nanjing.

Ever since I entered YYHS, I have been struggling with the courses I take, in particular math. Although much effort has been put into math, I can't see any sign of improvement. Every day, I sit in the classroom, looking at the math teacher (困惑地). In a sense, I can (被称为) an idiot in learning math. Worse still, there are countless unknown fields (来探索) in my spare time. Last weekend, we took a math exam and scored only 78, (这使我很受挫和绝望). YYHS, originally known as the Eighth School, (属于) the list of first provincial key schools in Hubei province. (被包围) talented students here, I feel highly pressured all the time. At times, an idea pops up into my mind that I may as well (摆脱) this renowned school. How I wish I could learn in a relaxed atmosphere, where I can have my learning schedule (调整) a little bit （如果可能）. When I shared my idea with my parents the other day, they urged me to (抛弃) all my troubles and (留心) in each class. Without their support, I had to stay and commit myself to my work. Whatever challenge comes my way, I will face it bravely. Should I fail in the future, I can (接管) my family business. After all, just as the saying goes, "All roads lead to Rome."
