German physicist Albert Einstein is one of the most famous scientists of all time, the personification of genius and the subject of a whole industry of scholarship. In The Einsteinian Revolution, two experts on Einstein's life and his theory of relativity―Israeli physicst Hanoch Gutfreund and German historian of science Jurgen Renn—offer an original and penetrating(厚利的) analysis of Einstein's revolutionary contributions to physics and our view of the physical world.
By setting Einstein's work in the long course of the evolution of scientific knowledge, Gutfreund and Renn discover the popular misconception of Einstein as an unconventional scientific genius who single-handedly created modern physics—and by pure thought alone.
As a large part of the book explains, Einstein typically argued that science progresses through steady evolution, not through revolutionary breaks with the past. He saw his theory of relativity not as something from scratch, but a natural extension of the classical physics developed by pioneers such as Italian astronomer Galileo Galilei and English physicist Isaac Newton in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, as well as nineteenth-century physicists.
The authors highlight how classical physics cannot be separated cleanly from modern Einsteinian physics. The book also includes substantial sections on Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus and Galileo whose methods inspired Einstein. When Einstein considered himself as standing on their shoulders, he meant that, without their contributions, he would not have formulated(阐述) the theory of relativity.
The Einsteinian Revolution is an important and thought-provoking contribution to the scholarly literature on Einstein and his surprising scientific creativity between 1905 and 1925. Gutfreund and Renn might not have given the final answer as to why Einstein, of all people, revolutionized physics in the way that he did. But they argue in fascinating detail that, to understand his genius, one must take into account not just the earlier history of physics but also the history of knowledge more broadly. Although not always an easy read, the book will interest physicists and historians alike.
(1)、Where is the text most probably taken from?A、An essay on Albert Einstein. B、An introduction to a book C、A guidebook to a course. D、A review of physics development(2)、What's the attitude of Gutfreund and Renn to the popular viewpoint on Einstein?A、Unclear. B、Favorable. C、Dismissive D、Opposing.(3)、What does the underlined phrase "from scratch" probably mean?A、Up to standard B、From nothing. C、By learning from others. D、With previous knowledge.(4)、What does the author mean to say by mentioning the famous physicists?A、Their ideas were rejected by Einstein. B、Their devotion to physics impressed Einstein. C、Their researches contributed to Einstein's success. D、Their hard work deserved the worldwide respect. -

Nanako Hama gets a lot of mail, mostly from strangers who live in her home city of Tokyo. In light envelopes, they send locks of their hair, hoping to recycle it.
People generate a huge amount of hair waste. Nearly all of that waste ends up in landfill, where it can release harmful greenhouse gases that contribute to climate change.
But hair possesses useful qualities that it's a shame to simply throw it away. That's why people all around the world, like Hama, have been collecting hair and finding innovative ways to recycle it, including making mats (垫子)out of it for removing oil leaks.
Hama is part of the nonprofit Matter of Trust (MoT) members working at more than 60 centers dotted across 17 countries, using machines to make hair donated from local salons and individuals into square mats, which are then used to clean up the floating oil.
Hair is particularly well-suited for this, says MoT co-founder Lisa Gautier. "That's because its rough sort of outer layer lets oil stick to it." MoT's mats have been used in major oil leaks. including the 2010 Deepwater Horizon and 2007 Cosco Busan incidents.
In a 2018 study, Murray, an environmental scientist at the University of Technology Sydney, in Australia found that mats made of recycled human hair could absorb 0.84 grams of oil onto its surface for every gram of hair—significantly more than polypropylene (聚丙烯), a type of plastic that's typically used to clean up floating oil.
Besides, hair is also useful as fertilizer (化肥). Hair contains a relatively high nitrogen (氮), a chemical element crucial for plant growth, and each lock of hair is made of roughly 16 percent of this essential nutrient. Last year, more than 560 gallons of liquid fertilizer made from human hair was sold to farmers in northern Tanzania and the feedback from the farmers has been very encouraging.
"It's just a great way to use hair in a productive way. Hair is an answer literally hanging in front of our eyes—for oil and soil," Hama says.
(1)、How does the author introduce the topic in paragraph 1?A、By detailing the background. B、By presenting a scene. C、By describing the feedback. D、By supporting evidences.(2)、What can the mat made of human hair do?A、Fertilize the soil. B、Prevent oil leaks. C、Clear the sea of oil. D、Take in harmful gas.(3)、Which qualities of hair contribute to its innovative use?A、Its color and strength. B、Its length and amount. C、Its weight and flexibility. D、Its structure and component.(4)、Which best describes the future of hair waster as fertilizer?A、Debatable. B、Applicable.C Irreplaceable. D. Uncontrollable.

I was the only kid in college with a reason to go to the mailbox, because my mother never believed in email or cell phones. I was literally waiting to get a letter to see how her weekend had gone, which was usually the warmest comfort for a girl of my age.
So when I moved to New York and got sucker-punched in the face by depression, I did the only thing I could think of. I wrote those same kinds of letters like my mother for strangers, and slipped them all over the city. I blogged about those letters and crazily promised if asked for a hand-written letter, I would write one.
Overnight, my inbox became this harbor of heartbreak—a single mother in Sacramento, a girl being bullied in Kansas, a 22-year-old immigrant, all asking me to write them and gave them a reason to wait by the mailbox. And this is how I initiated a global organization, fueled by those trips to the mailbox.
It is awesome. In fact, the thing about these letters is that most of them have been written by people who have grownup into a paperless world where some best conversations happen on a screen. We have learned to record our pain on to Facebook, and we speak swiftly in 140 characters or less.
But it's not about efficiency. And I could tell you about a woman whose husband was traumatized (受精神创伤) by his war experiences in Afghanistan and isolated himself, and her love letters slipped throughout the house eventually got him back to her. Or a man, who decides to take his own life, finally sleeps soundly with a stack of letters from strangers slipped beneath his pillow.
The scare the kinds of stories that convince me that letter-writing will always be needed even in these days, because it is an art now.
(1)、Why did the author share her experience in college?A、To show her attachment to letters. B、To convey her love for writing letters. C、To prove how convenient it was to write letters. D、To indicate how much she cared for her family.(2)、What inspired the author to launch the organization?A、The letters' comforting effect on people. B、Her intention of providing professional aid C、The positive influence of modern technology. D、Her mother's fear of modern communication.(3)、Why does the author think the global organization awesome?A、Digital generations still choose to handwrite letters. B、People prefer to write strangers letters on the Internet. C、So many people badly need hand-written letters to survive. D、People post their sufferings and happiness on social media.(4)、What is the best title for the passage?A、Family Letters Are Priceless B、Love for Writing Never Declines C、World Needs More Love Letters D、Hand-written Letters Improve Efficiency -

When I was nine, I needed to earn some money, so I asked Mr. Miceli, the newspaper publisher in my Chicago neighborhood, about an after-school paper route. He agreed only if I had a bicycle. My dad bought me a used bike, but right after that he fell ill and couldn't teach me to ride. Mr. Miceli, however, merely asked to see the bike. So I walked to his garage, showed it to him and got the job.
At first, I filled my delivery bag with rolled papers over the handlebars and walked my bike down the sidewalks. But pushing a bike with a load of papers was awkward; after a few days I borrowed Mom's two-wheeled shopping cart.
It took me longer to make my deliveries by cart, but I didn't mind. I sent each paper to its proper destination. In rain or snow, I put Dad's old raincoat over the cart to keep the papers dry. I got to meet everyone in the neighborhood—working-class people of Italian, German or Polish origins who were always kind to me.
When Dad returned from the hospital, he was too weak to restart his original job. Now we needed every penny we could raise to pay bills, so we sold the bike. Mr. Miceli must have known I wasn't using a bike, but he said nothing about it to me.
On the Thursday evening before Christmas, I rang my first customer's doorbell. Even though the lights were on, nobody answered, so I went on to the next house. No answer, nor did anyone respond at the next family on my route, or the one after.
I was very worried; I hadn't got the money for newspaper delivery this week. And while it was almost Christmas, I never thought that everyone would be out shopping. So I was very happy when, going up the walkway to Mr. Gordon's house, I heard music and voices. I rang the bell.

10、 阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项;选项中有两项为多余选项。
Living a fulfilling life is far less complicated than you think. It takes time to heal the negative and grow the positive in its place. The following tips are highly recommended.
Say "Yes!" more often.
"Yes" is a key that opens up doors to things you may have never known. Don't define yourself by everything you think you know about. Take some risks! Say yes to opportunities when they come around! Life is a constant learning process where you will hopefully gain new perspectives. .
Forgive easily and often.
But actually, there is a huge middle ground where pretty much everyone is. Let go of the mindset of good and bad. Instead, let people be the flawed creatures they are. Forgive yourself for not doing the right things, and then make better choices now that you know better.
Contribute to others' happiness.
A fulfilling life requires abandoning patterns of self-absorption and selfishness. It means you lift your eyes above your own life and consider how to better the lives of others. As you see your words and actions contributing positively to others' lives, your life has a great deal of meaning.
.
You'll hardly feel fulfilled if your energy goes in only one direction—out. Just as you pour love into others, you must do the same to yourself. Take time to nurture your own self with passions, self-care, or goal-oriented activities. It doesn't have to be something grand or expensive. Taking a stroll in nature or curling up with a good book are excellent ways of experiencing personal happiness.
A. Set aside "me" time.
B. Interact more with others.
C. It's no easy thing to forgive others.
D. Instead, you should try to make others' day.
E. Don't cut yourself off from life by shaking your head.
F. The biggest obstacle people encounter is a lack of patience.
G. Many people look on others or themselves as either nice or evil.

11、阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
On a chilly autumn morning in the Italian countryside near Larderello, Tuscany, the misty landscape reminded me why the area is nicknamed the Devil's Valley. The land here is a web of natural cracks in the rock that let a mix of steam and gases reach the surface.
Unlike the rolling hills and cypress-lined roads of other parts of Tuscany, the landscape here is covered with dozens of grey cooling towers puffing white vapors. The deafening roar of a turbine (涡轮机) at the Valle Secolo geothermal (地热的) plant breaks the quietness, but its violent spinning transforms steam rising from underground into energy for 150,000 families in the region. About 30% of Tuscany's electricity comes from this energy source. After producing electricity, the leftover steam heats water for nearby districts.
This underground energy has recently proved a vital resource. Italy greatly depended on Russian fossil fuels and in 2023 Italians bore the world's highest household electricity bills. Factories cut down production and households had to turn down their heaters. But residents of the Larderello area spent the winter in warm homes, thanks to the local geothermal plants working 24/7.
Bruno Della Vedova, president of the Italian Geothermal Union, hopes that in the future other Italian regions could benefit from such a resource, which is extremely important when the whole world looks to transition to renewable energy.
While countries like Iceland and Kenya are taking advantage of their geothermal resources, the industry's growth has made slow progress in Italy. High set-up costs and difficulties in extraction present significant barriers. And new plants often run into opposition from nearby communities over health concerns.
Italy sits on a geothermal sweet spot. Especially below Larderello, as Della Vedova says. A vast reservoir (储备) of steam and water is trapped between Earth's inner heat and a layer of clay-heavy rocks. High temperatures lead to the formation of steam directly inside the reservoir, providing a significant source of energy.
But while heat from Earth's core is practically endless, the water it heats within the planet are not. So Della Vedova says restoring underground water supplies and using them sustainably is critical for the future. "We can't take advantage of a geothermal resource at will," he says.
(1)、What is the second paragraph mainly about?A、The landscape in the countryside. B、The introduction to a geothermal plant. C、The application of geothermal energy in Tuscany. D、The process of turning underground steam into heat.(2)、Why has geothermal industry developed slowly in Italy?A、People near new plants object to it. B、Geothermal plants cut down their production. C、There is very little underground water and steam. D、People use less electricity by turning down heaters.(3)、What is Della Vedova's attitude to the prospect of geothermal energy?A、Unfavorable. B、Unclear. C、Optimistic. D、Cautious.(4)、What does the passage mainly talk about?A、Where does geothermal energy lead Italy? B、Is the heat from Earth's core really limitless? C、Can energy from underground help power Italy? D、How can geothermal energy be used scientifically? -
12、阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
It is a truth universally acknowledged that statues of public figures are hated by everyone, except perhaps their creators and, hopefully, their subjects, if they're still alive to see them. Jane Austen—the author of Pride and Prejudice—will of course not be around when, or if, the statue in memory of her 250th birthday is built at Winchester Cathedral next year, but according to Jane Austen Society vice president Elizabeth Proudman, the author would not have approved of the proposal anyway. "She is known to have been a modest woman who avoided publicity."
Similar views were aired at a public meeting last week, in which local residents raised concerns that an Austen statue would lead to the "Disneyfication" of the sacred Cathedral. It is no disrespect to the statue's creator — Martin Jennings to say that it's difficult to imagine crowds of parents being woken up on the first day of the summer holidays by their screaming six-year-olds begging to be driven down the Cathedral to catch a glimpse of Austen in the bronze.
Winchester's is not the first wrangling over a celebrity sculpture in recent years: when the sculpture of Mary Wollstonecraft, the greatest feminist thinker of the 18th century, was on show, it was laughed at as a tiny misshapen woman. The bust (半身像) of footballing Cristiano Ronaldo was revealed at Madeira airport in 2017, which some commentators observed looked more like the former F1 star David Coulthard. To his credit, the bust's creator, Emanuel Santos, defended himself admirably, saying "Even Jesus did not please everyone."
When Auguste Rodin's ogreish (妖魔似的) Monument to Balzac went on display in Paris in 1898, it caused such dislike that it was rejected by the very group that had approved it in the first place. Yet by 1969 Kenneth Clark had declared it "the greatest piece of sculpture of the 19th century". And you can still see it standing in the most visible place in the Musée Rodin's gardens today. Perhaps there's a lesson in that for all the maligned (诽谤) sculptors around the world: just wait 70 odd years and things will blow over. Perhaps by the year 2095, Austen, Wollstonecraft and Ronaldo will be standing toe to toe, bringing glory to some greatly-admired galleries. Or, as someone wisely remarks, "time will explain."
(1)、Why did the local people worry about building the statue in the Cathedral?A、Because no one likes statues of public figures. B、Because it may show disrespect for the creator. C、Because Jane Austen didn't want to be exposed publicly. D、Because it may turn the Cathedral into kids' pleasure ground.(2)、What does the underlined word "wrangling" in paragraph 3 mean?A、Arguing. B、Avoiding. C、Justifying. D、Interrupting.(3)、How does the third paragraph mainly develop?A、By listing statistics. B、By offering examples. C、By giving a definition. D、By quoting someone's words.(4)、What is the author's opinion about the statues of public figures?A、They are unworthy to be built. B、They will possibly be popular in the future. C、They will cause people's hate to the subjects. D、They are bound to bring honor to noted galleries. -
13、阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
Ausie Perine is not a typical superhero. Well, maybe he looks the part, with his signature cape (斗篷) flapping against his blue shirt. But two things set this caped fighter apart: His enemy is not an imaginary one from a comic book but hunger and homelessness. Also, he's only four years old.
Our hero's story started in the family living room. Ausie and his father, TJ Perine, were watching a program on Animal Planet about a mother tiger leaving her cubs. "I told him that the cubs would be homeless," TJ says. "Ausie didn't know what homelessness meant, but he was sad and wanted to know more."
Seeing this as a teachable moment, TJ took Ausie to a local shelter, where they saw some homeless men. "Dad, they look sad," Ausie said. "Can we take them some food and smiles?" That day, Ausie used his allowance to buy each man a sandwich. When they returned the next week, Ausie again dipped into his piggy bank to buy sandwiches, which he handed out along with his new catchphrase, "Don't forget love!"
Days later, word of Ausie's acts of kindness spread through social media. A local food chain jumped aboard, agreeing to donate $10,000 toward the cause. Soon, donations poured in continuously. Thanks to the collective support, now he can feed about 800 people at once.
But Ausie isn't just filling bellies. He's improving the lives of those he meets. In the shelter, Ausie talked to a man named Raymont with respect, which touched him deeply. He shared with TJ just how grateful he was to be treated so considerately by a young stranger. With the help of TJ, Raymont obtained a driver's license, with which he found a job. All that was made possible because a little boy took the time to care.
Ausie's passion has now become his family's calling. They established the Show Love Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to offering medical and mental health care as preventive steps against homelessness. Young Ausie continues to give out food, smiles, and his inspirational message of love. "It makes me feel like I'm saving the day."
(1)、What can we learn about Ausie from paragraph 1 and 2?A、He is fond of animal programs. B、He is nothing special as a fighter. C、He felt upset about the homeless cubs. D、He has imaginary enemies from books.(2)、What action of Ausie's impressed Raymont most?A、Offering him a job. B、Giving him respect. C、Donating food to him. D、Keeping encouraging him.(3)、What word best describes Ausie?A、Sympathetic. B、Single-minded. C、Confident.
