"Somebody's in the water," he said. Before Jafri could respond, Lobb climbed over the rail at the edge of the bank and leaped into the cold water without taking the time to remove his shoes. Their lungs heaved and their muscles burned as they pushed and pulled the immobile figure through the brisk, churning water.

They might have been dragging a corpse. The man's skin was blue, and neither Jafri nor Lobb detected any breathing. Suddenly the man stirred, breathing again, and faded back to near unconsciousness.

Both men, thoroughly exhausted from 15-plus minutes in the water, watched as rescue workers loaded the nearly drowned man into an ambulance and drove away. Lobb and Jafri never learned who he was, what became of him or how he'd fallen into the river.

In place of that knowledge, they have a story they get to tell now, another experience that has further cemented their bond. Lots of people were there that day, yet only the two of them jumped in the water — because, they say, they were the fittest people there and, so, had a moral responsibility.

"People always say ‘If your friend jumps off a cliff, are you jumping?' I think I answered that one." Jafri said, laughing.

In the journey of life, everyone (experience) various stages of growth. These stages shape (vt. 塑造) us into the individuals we become, (teach) us valuable lessons along the way. As a high school student, I have gone through many changes have led to my personal development.

One of the (important) experiences that impacted (v.影响) my growth was when I took part in community service project during the summer vacation. The project involved (v.涉及) volunteering at a local elderly care home. At first, I was quite reluctant (adj.不情愿的) and felt (comfortable) interacting with the senior citizens. , as I spent more time with them, listening to their stories and helping with small tasks, I began to understand the importance of compassion (n.同情) and empathy.

This experience not only taught me the value of serving others but also helped me develop better communication (skill). I learned how to communicate people from different generations and backgrounds. It was a turning point in my personal growth, making me a more considerate and respectful person.

Have goals

Set a schedule

Daily or weekly schedules give you more of a feeling that things are being accomplished (完成). Students who set schedules for themselves tend to be a bit more organized and aware of everything that is happening around them. For example, they usually like studying for a few hours now and then they can hang out with their friends later.

If you fail to hit your goals, adjust your goals to make up for your past mistakes. Take a step back and assess (评估) what you are doing and change it. It's okay not to reach goals, as long as you can acknowledge it honestly and make positive changes towards meeting your goals. But sometimes you just fall short. Knowing that it's okay and move on, you can pick yourself back up quickly.

Their 14-year-old son, Mike, is a prodigy. He is a member of Mensa, which is the world's top IQ club. He completed his high school, associate's and bachelor's degrees all in three years. But the parents are proud that they were able to help Mike with his social skills along with his intellectual skills. Melissa told CNBC that people expected "Young Sheldon" before they met her son. Young Sheldon is a television show about a child talent who is an indoor man and lacks social skills. "But once they talk to Mike, they understand that he's just a normal 14-year-old that happens to be able to do amazing things," said Melissa.

Mark and Melissa got to know about their child's intelligence when he entered preschool. A child psychologist told them that their son would need a different course to support his fast development. Many parents aren't comfortable with putting their children with 18-year-olds, but Mike's parents saw the value in letting their child go through it. "I wanted him to be social and be able to deal with all the different personalities in the classrooms with older children," said Melissa.

The parents shared that they were able to do this by letting Mike find his own voice and put it to use. "We let him order food when he's 3 or 4 from the waiter or waitress and introduce himself to people. Those kinds of things are done to encourage him to engage with everyone else and be more comfortable talking to others outside of our environment," said Melissa.

Thanks to his parents, Mike has learned to get along with young and old alike.

Since my first visit to the farm, I had wanted more than anything to be allowed to climb the stone walls surrounding the houses. My parents would never agree because the walls were so old that some stones were loose and falling. Later I met with my grandfather to tell him about my adventures. I'll never forget what he said. "Fred," he said, smiling, "you made this day a special day just by being yourself. Always remember, there's only one person in this whole world like you, and I like you exactly as you are."

Many years have passed since then, and today I host the television program Mister Rogers' Neighborhood, seen by millions of children throughout America. There have been changes over the years, but one thing remains the same: my message to children at the end of almost every visit. "The traditional local libraries usually open at 9 a. m. and close at 10 p. m., which isn't convenient for working people like me. Similarly, Ma, a 20-year-old sophomore from East China's Anhui Province, often visits a 24-hour library in Huai'an. During long holidays such as the summer and winter vacations, she goes there almost every day, staying for up to nine hours each time to study subjects like computer science, English, and law, according to Ma. "This library is very quiet as many people are studying. It motivates me," Ma noted, although she admitted that occasional noise can be a distraction.

A social media user surnamed Luo often visits a 24-hour library in Beijing's Xicheng district. "The place is packed with more people reading than working, and others preparing for exams. The atmosphere is quite peaceful," Luo told the Global Times. "There's a noticeable increase in visitors at night, including seniors with children and professionals, but most go there to read. It feels quite relaxing. Now, besides cafes, there's another place for me to go after work in the evening ," Luo added.

According to a national reading survey, in April, the average Chinese adult read 4.75 physical books and 3.40 e-books in 2023. As of the end of 2023, China boasted 3,246 public libraries with a total collection of 1.44 billion books, marking a 5.6 percent increase from 2022.

Everyone is nervous and nobody knows where to go for classes. Thinking about making new friends might make you feel nervous, too. But don't worry. You are not alone. You are going to school with a group of students who are also your age, and we have several tips to share.

Forget your fear and just talk to someone.It might be easier said than done, but try to take a deep breath and voice. Don't be afraid to approach people. Introduce yourself and start a conversation about something you have in common. Sit in the middle of the classroom with as many new friends around you as possible.

Join clubs.

Join after-school activities that interest you and make friends in the club. If you don't join anything, you will be just going to class and then going home. Being in a club forces you to be more social.

Stay clean.

No one likes a bad smell that could knock someone over. Shower every day, brush your teeth and wash your hair. Try to make yourself look neat, whatever you wear.

Be respectful of people's differences.

Everyone has his or her own opinion about the world and everyone believes in different things. It's a good thing to have friends with different opinions because you can each share your own.
