1、Hundreds of millions of birds die every year from crashing into windows, one of the biggest sources of human-caused bird deaths - far greater than wind turbines (风力涡轮机) and airplane strikes combined. In an effort to help birds see the glass before it's too late, people may stick coloured films (薄膜) on their windows - often on the indoor side. But a recent s study in PeerJ Life&Environment shows that such films work only on a window's outside surface.
"Putting these window films on the inside really is not giving you the benefit that you would want for protecting the birds," says John P. Swaddle, a biologist at the College of William and Mary and lead author of the new study.
To test the films' effectiveness, Swaddle and his co-workers applied one of two widely available film to either inner or outer window surfaces. On film reflected shorter light wavelengths (波长) that humans cannot see, and the other reflected longer wavelengths (many birds can see both). Both films helped to prevent bird strikes by more than 35 percent when put on the outside surface, the study found - but films on the inside had no benefit at all.
"It's some important work about the small differences between what can and can't work in terms of preventing window strikes from birds," says George Mason University biologist David Luther, who studies how birds adapt to cities.
People usually find it much easier to put films on the inside of a window, says Natalia Ocampo-Penuela, a conservation ecologist at the University of California, Santa Cruz. "For taller buildings, to apply something to the outside, you need scaffolds (脚手架)... you need to clean the windows extra well for them to apply correctly, and they don't last as long."
(1)、Why are bird deaths caused by wind turbines and airplane strikes mentioned in Paragraph 1?A、To share some shocking news about bird deaths. B、To stress the importance of protecting wild birds. C、To remind people to stick more colourful films on the windows. D、To introduce the serious problem of birds crashing into windows.(2)、What determines the effect of the experiment result?A、The materials chosen to make the film. B、The quality of the films used in the study. C、The wavelengths of the light reflected by films. D、The side of the window that the film is applied to(3)、Which of the following statements is David Luther most likely to agree with?A、Birds can adapt to city life without much help from humans. B、There is little people can do to keep birds from striking windows. C、It isn't worth the efforts to place films on the outside of the windows. D、Research on preventing birds from hitting windows is of great importance.(4)、What is the main purpose of the writer writing the passage?A、Discuss different approaches for decreasing bird deaths. B、To call on bird lovers to create a bird-friendly environment. C、To present a study on window films for reducing bird strikes. D、To teach readers how to apply coloured films to the windows. -
2、Every day, we face a range of decisions, from picking a shirt for work to choosing a job. Some of these decisions have far-reaching consequences that may impact the rest of our lives. These choices can be difficult, and we aren't often aware of the reasons behind why we make certain choices. A new study explores how we make decisions when it comes to short and long-term rewards. It found that we were more impulsive (冲动) with decisions that may bring about an immediate reward than those that have longer-term consequences.
The study was conducted by Professor Pleger from Ruhr University Bochum. The team wanted to know how we make decisions about what to eat and where. They asked participants to choose between smaller immediate rewards and larger rewards that they had to wait for. The longer they waited, the bigger the reward. Brain activity was observed using functional MRI, which shows which parts of the brain are active during decision-making.
The brain observation revealed interesting differences when it came to each type of reward. When people made decisions about money, brain areas responsible for thinking about the future and self-control were more active. When deciding about food, the areas that are linked to immediate satisfaction were more involved. This means that our decision-making pattern depends on the type of reward that we are given.
By understanding how our brains respond to different types of rewards, we may develop better tools that control how we make those decisions that may have serious consequences in our lives. Professor Pleger believes that understanding these differences can lead to new treatments for impulsive behaviors and addictions. For example, Neurofeedback (神经反馈) can observe real-time brain activity to help individuals manage their brain functions, which can help them make particularly difficult decisions, specifically when it comes to unhealthy or addictive choices.
(1)、What is paragraph 2 mainly about?A、The process of Pleger's study. B、The causes of brain activity. C、The theory of people's choices. D、The methods of decision making.(2)、According to the study, what influences the decision-making pattern?A、The desire for long-term rewards. B、The kind of reward provided. C、The ability to control one's desire. D、The focus on immediate satisfaction.(3)、Why does the author mention the example in the last paragraph?A、To prove the theory of the study. B、To show the application of the study. C、To compare different types of rewards. D、To praise the usefulness of the Neurofeedback.(4)、What can be a best title for the text?A、How to Make Reasonable Decisions? B、Can You Wait Longer Before Decisions? C、How Is Decision-Making Pattern Benefit Us? D、Are Your Decisions Based on Impulse or Reason? -
3、My initial exploration of the world of comic books happened through the comic strips (连环漫画) in newspapers. It began with a fondness for Garfield and his adventures, and led to the discovery of a range of comic books like Champak, Tintin, and Archie. They enabled me to enjoy myself in a world without iPads and the Internet — just like so many of my friends who were fond of reading.
While my access to comics as a child was limited to what was printed in the newspaper, this changed once I grew older and started visiting bookstores to buy the books that I wanted to read. Having grown up on a diet of image-heavy books, I found the idea of reading text-only novels quite formidable. As I searched for books that lay somewhere in between, I came across a copy of Bhimayana — a graphic novel. It felt familiar due to its comic-like theme and design. Plus, understanding complex stories through pictures was relatively easier and more fun. And so, as I grew older, I found myself turning to graphic novels from childish comic books.
Graphic novels dealt with serious topics in a more engaging manner. They would literally show me what was going on. For example, when I was reading Joe Sacco's Palestine, I didn't have to imagine the ruin caused by the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. I could actually see it while reading about it.
Fast-forward a few years to when I was given a copy of Jonathan Bloomfield's Palestine: A Novel. Though I was impressed by the compelling (扣人心弦的) nature of storytelling in his book, I am not sure if I would have been able to visualize and enjoy his text-only version so much had I not read Sacco's Palestine first. Thanks to the graphic novel, I had a "picture" of whatever had happened, and that made it easier and more fun to understand the details of the whole story.
While my romance with comic books is still ongoing, in the long run, my love for graphic novels is much stronger and here to stay.
(1)、Why did the author start reading comic books as a child?A、He found comic books interesting. B、He couldn't go to bookstores. C、He wanted to be different from his friends. D、He had limited access to other books.(2)、Which word can best explain the underlined word "formidable" in paragraph 27A、Acceptable. B、Natural. C、Difficult. D、Interesting.(3)、What does the author say about reading Sacco's Palestine?A、It changed his attitude to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. B、It made his understanding of Bloomfield's book easier. C、It encouraged him to read more text-only novels. D、It prepared him to write in a more serious way.(4)、What does the author mainly talk about in the passage?A、Comic books are more an just pictures. B、Why he loves reading graphic novels. C、Why he turned to serious novels eventually. D、Picture books are here to stay for many reasons. -

21 years after graduating from college, I became a high school English teacher. During my first term as an educator, the kids taught me about high school and life, and what was important to them. It had been 25 years since I graduated from high school, so I had a lot to learn. I listened, took notes, and asked many questions.
My students had more hardship (艰难) than what I had been familiar with at their age. Understanding their situations was not easy, but loving them came easily.
When my second term began, my classroom welcomed a group of new students, including one young man who lit up the space every time he passed through the door. David stood tall at six feet and four inches. His strong body gave him the appearance of a grown man. His wide smile and bright eyes charmed every person in the classroom.
He was smart, too. David seemed to know the answers to everything. For weeks, he controlled the atmosphere of my class. He was very active. He led group discussions, encouraged others to participate, and earned the highest grades. I was so impressed by him and his abilities that I didn't ask many questions. I didn't really take time to get to know him as I had to be with my first-term students.
A few weeks passed, and we entered the month of February. David walked quietly into the classroom. His usual smile disappeared, and he looked cold. I asked if he was okay, but he didn't respond. I encouraged him to participate, but he refused. He was just silent and emotionless. I was puzzled, embarrassed, upset and also angry about his behavior in class.
Finally, I called another student to my office. I had noticed him often walking in the hallways with David. "Do you know what's wrong with David?" I asked. He replied, "Oh, Mrs Green, his mom's birthday is coming, but she was just found to have cancer."

6、Cai Lei, former vice-president of JD Group, reveals how amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) diagnosis (诊断) set him on the path to find a cure.
Born to a farmer's family in 1978, Cai has been deeply influenced by his father's idea that "one has to fight for himself". Since primary school, he has been getting up before 5 am to run and study English. At 29, Cai became chief tax manager in Vanke Co. In 2011, he joined JD Group, where he led his team to develop the first electronic invoice (发票) in China. Wherever he worked, he always tried his best to create new value.
Diagnosed with ALS in 2019, he would have only two to five years to live. ALS is usually caused by the gradual death of motor neurons(神经元), which makes normally easy movements like drinking water, eating, going to the bathroom, and speaking impossible. Finally, patients will completely rely on machines and others' help to survive. So far, only two medicines are available to treat ALS, but they can at most extend patients' life for several months without improving their living quality.
To develop effective drugs is the only way to save ALS patients. However, the intense effort required, which is unprofitable for so rare an illness, makes it a mission almost impossible. It usually takes 10-15 years to complete the research cycle for a new drug and the cost is $1-3billion. Take Alzheimer's disease for example. Between 2000 and 2017, investment in new drugs for this more common disease was over $600 billion, and 99.6% of the research on more than 300 drugs failed.
Cai decided to take matters into his own hands. He started his own medical technology company, built his own research team, and volunteered to try more than 30 new medicines which all failed. However, he has decided that even if all efforts prove fruitless, he will continue. To shoot the last bullet, he has decided to donate his brain and spinal cord for scientific research. He will not die for nothing.
(1)、What kind of person is Cai Lei?A、Extremely gifted and ambitious. B、Hard-working and warm-hearted. C、Quite responsible and dependable. D、Highly motivated and strong-willed.(2)、What might happen to people diagnosed with ALS?A、Losing the ability to think and speak normally. B、Maintaining a normal life by taking medicines. C、Dying within months of a confirmed diagnosis. D、Needing external assistance to survive in the end.(3)、Why is Alzheimer's disease mentioned in paragraph 4?A、To talk about the severity of Alzheimer. B、To prove Alzheimer to be a common disease. C、To explain the difficulty of finding a cure for ALS. D、To ask for more investment in the research on ALS.(4)、What can be a suitable title for the text?A、Joint efforts to fight ALS B、A man who never gives in C、ASL, a rare deadly disease D、Suffering of a man with ALS -
7、When I was growing up, I had an old neighbour named Dr Gibbs. He didn't look like any doctor I'd ever known. He never1 at us for playing in his yard. I remember him as someone who was a lot nicer than most of the adults in our community.
When Dr Gibbs wasn't saving lives, he was planting trees. His house sat on ten acres, and his life's goal was to make it a2.
The good doctor had some3 theories concerning plant care and growth. He never watered his new trees, which flew in the face of conventional (传统的) wisdom. Once I asked why. He said that watering plants4 them so that each following tree generation would grow5. So you have to make things6 for them and weed out (淘汰) the weaker trees early on.
He talked about how watering trees made for shallow roots, and how trees that weren't watered had to grow deep roots7 water. I took him to mean that deep roots were to be8.

In our weekly staff meeting, our editor Ashley was not pleased with the quality of our reporting. "Our readership is way down. We need better stories for this Thursday's school newspaper. Does anybody have any ideas?" she said.
I handed her my article about our basketball team beating Deerfield High School the previous night by one point. "Sports stories are fun," she said, "but not good enough for the front page. We need something to really get people ‘s attention."
After our meeting, we left the newsroom together and heard someone screaming, "Perry is missing!" Perry was a big red parrot and had been our school mascot (吉祥物) for ten years. He played an important role in students' lives, both in and out of class. He had also been a constant presence at school events, inspiring a sense of unity among students.
Everyone gathered around Perry's empty cage, heartbroken. Suddenly, a student from the crowd came over and showed me a photo. "You're a reporter for the school paper, right? I happened to take this yesterday," he said. In the photo was a Deerfield High School basketball player with something large hidden under his shirt around the size of a parrot.
"He must have stolen Perry to get back at us for winning the game!" Ashley cried. We hurried back to the newsroom, agreeing to run the photo on the front page with the headline "Deerfeld Stole Perry." "This is just the story we need. Everyone will read it," Ashley said confidently.
After she left, I took a closer look at the photo. The clock in the background read 4:15 pm, but our game against Deerfield hadn't started until 4:30 pm. Why would the boy have taken Perry before we even played? An uneasy feeling came over me that we might have falsely accused someone.
I went to Perry's usual caretaker to ask if he knew Perry was missing. "He's not missing. He's retired. He's ready for some quieter days," he said. Learning the truth, I immediately told Ashley and suggested writing a story to say goodbye to Perry.

17、Why does one plus one equal two? One possible answer is "It just does! " That's just like saying "Because I said so! "
It is quite right to feel frustrated (沮丧的) by that idea. However, my love of math is somewhat driven by my love of breaking roles, or at least pushing against them. Both of those reasons play an important role in advancing human understanding, and especially mathematical understanding.
Sometimes, one plans one is just one, like if you put a pile (堆) of sand on top of another pile of mind, then you just get one the of sand. Or, as an art student of mine pointed out, if you mix one color with one color, you get one color. If you have enough money on you to buy one cup of coffee, and your friend has enough to buy one, thon together you still might have enough to buy three.
Now, you might think that these aren't really situations in which one plus one equals something else, because they aren't really addition, or because those aren't really numbers. You're welcome to think that, but that's not what math does. Math instead says: And in doing so, we'll understand something about the world more deeply than we did before.
A. Math isn't really about getting the right answer.
B. Sometimes, one plus one can equal more than two.
C. And in some situations, one plus one is actually zero.
D. This answer has been frustrating children for generations.
E. Let's work out when one plus one equals two and when it doesn't.
F. Math can feel like a boring world of strict rules you just have to follow.
G. Instead of asking why one plus one is two, let's question if it's always true.

18、Puppies (小狗) are able to request help at just 6 weeks old. They repeatedly alternating (交替) their eye contact between a nearby human and the situation they are struggling with, says Stefanie Riemer at the University of Veterinary Medicine Vienna in Austria.
Dogs raised in shelters generally only start intentionally communicating with humans through their eye contact as young adults. But puppies brought up in someone's home might speed up their communication with people, says Riemer.
To learn more, Riemer and her colleagues studied 83 puppies, aged 41 to 52 days, of eight different types that were raised by 11 breeders (饲养员) in their homes. While the breeders were present, Riemer — with whom the puppies were familiar took each dog into an unknown room of its home. She then presented each puppy with an unsolvable task or a colourful, battery-operated toy similar to a paper bag, which she doubted the puppies would be careful about. For the task, the puppies first learned that food was under an overturned plastic cup, but it was later glued and couldn't be knocked over.
The researchers recorded if the puppies alternated contact between either the toy or the glued cup and a person's face within 2 seconds. They discovered that 69 percent of them alternated their eye contact with the toy and 46 percent did so with the glued cup.
The findings suggest that puppies often try to communicate with people when they have gained from repeated and early positive interactions with humans, says Kristy Gould at Luther College in Iowa. "They could be looking at the human to gain information about why they can't solve the task or whether the new object is safe to interact with, or they could be looking at the human for agreement to interact further with the object since the human may or may not encourage this behaviour," says Gould.
(1)、How does the writer develop paragraph 2?A、By giving a reason. B、By describing a process. C、By presenting a comparison. D、By providing a strategy.(2)、What does Riemer's study focus on?A、Why puppies are of different types. B、Whether puppies need home-raising. C、When puppies begin to interact with people. D、How puppies request help through eye contact.(3)、What task did the researchers set for the puppies?A、Playing with an electric toy. B、Dealing with a difficult situation. C、Learning to get along with breeders. D、Finding food in an unfamiliar environment.(4)、According to Kristy Gould, why do puppies look at humans?A、To know how to complete tasks quickly. B、To get people to join in playful activities. C、To find emotional support from humans. D、To gain agreement to keep communicating. -
19、The word "manifest" has been chosen as Cambridge Dictionary's Word of the Year for 2024.
Manifest isn't a new word; it's been used since at least the 1400s to mean "clear" or "obvious. " But as time went on, it had different meanings. Its modern meaning — "to imagine achieving something you want, with the belief that imagining it will make it happen" — was first used in the early 1900s. This is the version (版本) of the word that's become popular today.
Cambridge Dictionary's Wendalyn Nicols explained that the Word of the Year is chosen based on three things: how popular the word is during the year, how it relates to important events, and how interesting it is as a word. And "manifest" was certainly popular — the word was looked up over 130, 000 times on the Cambridge Dictionary website in 2024.
The word "manifest" gained traction thanks to celebrities (名人) like singer Dua Lipa, US gymnast Simone Biles, and England soccer player Ollie Watkins, who all said "manifesting" helped them achieve their goals.
"Manifesting is a big thing for me, " Dua Lipa told Time in April. The 2024 year was a big year for the singer, as she headlined the legendary Glastonbury music festival in England in June. As she stood on the stage, she shared how she had "manifested" the moment. "I've written this moment down and wished for it and dreamed it and worked so hard," she said to the crowd.
But not everyone is a fan of manifesting. Dr. Sander van der Linden, a psychologist from Cambridge University, believes manifesting is just "magical thinking" with no scientific proof that it actually works. "However, it is necessary to understand the difference between the power of positive thinking and moving reality with your mind — the former is healthy, while the latter is an unfounded belief," he said.
(1)、What can we infer from paragraph 2?A、More people tend to dream big. B、Language can change over time. C、Homan imagination knows no limits. D、The meaning of a word matters most.(2)、What does the underlined part "gained traction" in paragraph 4 mean?A、Got popular. B、Became clear. C、Remained important. D、Looked new.(3)、What does Dua Lipa's experience suggest?A、She is proud of her confidence. B、She enjoys every moment on stage. C、She credited her success to manifesting. D、She believed 2024 was a lucky year for singers.(4)、What is Dr. Sander van der Linden's attitude towards manifesting?A、Doubtful. B、Hopeful. C、Unconcerned. D、Surprised. -
20、Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, born in 1977 in Enugu, Nigeria, is a famous writer and thinker known for her powerful storytelling and clear ideas on social issues. She grew up in Nsukka, a university town, where her parents worked as professors. Encouraged by her family's love for books and learning, Adichie started writing stories as a child. She read novels by both African and Western writers, but she often noticed that Western books gave an incorrect picture of African life. This early understanding encouraged her to write stories that showed a more real image of her culture.
Adichie moved to the United States for college, where she studied communication, political science, and creative writing. Her experience in the U. S. influenced her works deeply, as she observed cultural misunderstandings and stereotypes (刻板印象) about Africa. She used these observations to shape her unique writing style, mixing her Nigerian roots with her international outlook.
Her first novel, Purple Hibiscus (2003), follows a Nigerian family dealing with personal and societal struggles. It received international praise and established Adichie as a rising star. Her second novel, Half of a Yellow Sun (2006), explores the Biafran War and its influence on ordinary people, while her third, Americanah (2013), examines themes of self-discovery, race, and migration (移民) through the story of a Nigerian woman living in the U. S. These works not only earned her countless awards but also challenged stereotypes about African life, offering a rich and detailed view of her homeland.
Adichie is also a supporter of gender (性别) equality. Her TED Talk, We Should All Be Feminists, became a big success and was even adapted into a book. Today, she continues to write and speak on topics like culture and self-discovery, using her voice to connect people and promote understanding across different communities.
