  • 1、"How many of us as children have stared up at a church-like top of a giant tree and climbed it in wonder, which is a rally special part of our lives?" asks Bill Laurance, a tropical ecologist at James Cook University. "The leaves of big trees in forests are spreading out in all directions. We're faced with organisms that have evolved for long periods of ecological stability."

"There's a lot to discuss on the issue," says David Lindenmayer, a conservation ecologist at the Australian National University. "Climate change will mean that, in some forests, big trees won't reach the same sizes they used to." The effects of climate change, including long droughts, more invasive species and so on increase the simple physical challenges that big trees face in pulling water from their roots to their leaves and withstanding windstorms.

Lindenmayer and Laurance define "large, old trees" as the largest five percent mature trees within a species. The flexible definition means that in some forests, the large, old trees might be only 20 meters tall and 100 years old.

These large, old trees control the surrounding plant communities, affect water and nutrient distribution, and provide food and shelter for wildlife. "They're really the breadbaskets of the forest," says Laurance. "This is a very environmentally and ecologically important group of organisms, and they need special care and handling." Determining the distribution and habitat requirements for large, old trees in the landscape is the first step towards ensuring their survival, "We have to ensure that what we're thinking is long-term, to match the way these trees have existed for hundreds or even thousands of years," says Laurance. "It's going to be a real challenge to keep some places where there is still wildlife and the big church-like trees that we all really care about."

  • 2、Good news, coffee lovers: Your daily cup of Joe might be doing good to your heart, namely by helping to reduce the risk of heart failure, suggest the findings of a new study. In an analysis of data from three large studies on the topic, researchers found that those who reported drinking one or more cups of caffeinated (含咖徘因的) coffee a day had "a related decreased long-term heart failure risk".

For the report published in Circulation: Heart Failure, researchers used machine learning to examine data from a large study from the Framingham Heart Study, referencing this data against two other studies. "Each study included at least 10 years of follow-up, and altogether the studies provided information on more than 21,000 U.S. adult participants," researchers said.

When analyzing the Framingham Heart Study, researchers noted that when compared to non-coffee drinkers, coffee drinkers' risk of heart failure decreased by 5% to 12% for each cup they drank each day. As for decaffeinated coffee, researchers noted that it did, not have the same benefits as caffeinated coffee, with one study suggesting that decaffeinated coffee may have an opposite effect.

Dr. David Kao, senior study author, said in a statement, "The relation between caffeine and heart failure risk reduction was surprising. Coffee and caffeine are often considered by the general population to be ‘bad' for the heart because people relate them to health problems like palpitations, high blood pressure, etc. The relationship between increasing caffeine consumption and decreasing heart failure risk turns that thought on its head."

"However, there is not yet enough clear evidence to prove that increasing coffee consumption can decrease the risk of heart disease with the same strength and certainty as stopping smoking, losing weight, or exercising," Kao noted. The researchers also warned that the findings only focused on black coffee, that is, plain coffee, without added sugar and high-fat dairy products such as cream.

(1)、What's the finding of the new study?
A、The number of heart failure cases has decreased gradually. B、Coffee can help lower the possibility of heart failure. C、Caffeine does harm to people's health. D、Coffee helps cure heart disease.
(2)、How did researchers achieve their finding?
A、By searching online for detailed information. B、By interviewing experts about their opinions. C、By conducting surveys among young adults. D、By comparing data from long-term studies.
(3)、What can directly affect the result of the study?
A、The brand of coffee. B、The age of the subjects. C、The addition of caffeine to coffee. D、The amount of coffee consumption.
(4)、What is Dr. Kao's attitude towards the result?
    A、Indifferent. B、Positive. C、Curious. D、Careful.
  • 3、Levon Biss was looking at insects from his garden through a microscope he bought for his son. For fun, they unintentionally placed an insect under the lens (镜片). "It is amazingly beautiful!" they both screamed.

The father had been making a career taking photographs for advertisements. But that experience gave him a new direction. Around the world, insect populations are in decline because of habitat loss and climate change. Biss thought that if people could see what he saw through his son's microscope, they would care more about protecting insects.

So Biss turned to macrophotography: taking close-up pictures of small things, like flowers or bugs. His work has attracted attention not just for its unusual beauty. It also raises awareness about the need for conservation.

In 2016, Biss showed his first insect project, Microsculpture. The term refers to the features of an insect's exoskeleton, or outer shell, which develops over time as the bug adapts to its environment.

Biss's pictures capture the insects in all their microscopic details. Then he blows up the images until the insects become larger than life, some of them eight feet tall. But each image takes weeks to make. He uses a digital camera with a microscope lens. The camera is fixed on a computerized track, which allows Biss to take a shot, then move the camera by seven microns (微米) — a distance equals to about 1/10 the thickness of a human hair — for the next shot. In the end, Biss might take 10,000 shots of a bug. A computer combines these small pictures into a single image.

Biss's latest exhibition is Extinct and Endangered at the American Museum of Natural History. He selected bugs that were extinct or endangered, hoping his photographs would serve as a better purpose. "I communicate visually," he says, "The way I work is through pictures. But I think it's my duty to shake things up and get people to pay attention."

(1)、What made Levon Biss turn to macrophotography?
A、Beautiful insects. B、Attractive environment. C、An expensive microscope. D、An accidental observation.
(2)、How does Levon Biss manage to capture insects' microscopic details?
A、By taking a shot at them twice. B、By adjusting the camera on a track. C、By taking close-up pictures countless times. D、By putting them in order on a computer.
(3)、What does the underlined phrase "shake things up" refer to in the last paragraph?
A、Get rid of the prejudice. B、Take action to save wildlife. C、Spare no efforts to face difficulties. D、Make people think about nature differently.
(4)、Which of the following best describes Levon Biss?
    A、Patient and responsible. B、Wealthy and ambitious. C、Polite and strong-willed. D、Curious and easy-going.
  • 4、The State of Colorado has four of the best parks out of the 58 national parks in the United States. The parks have some of the best scenery of all the national parks.

Black Canyon (峡谷) of Gunnison National Park

This park offers the most breathtaking views from up in the mountains into the canyons below. While exploring the canyons, you will find that the walls drop nearly straight down into the narrow valleys of the snake-like rivers below. Visitors are offered more than 100 camping sites, and a lot of bird species and many animals are native to the area.

  • 5、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。

8-year-old Evan was standing by the sidewalk when he noticed Mrs. Carter opening her shop. He smiled, relieved that the shop had not permanently closed.

Two days ago, when Evan was passing by her store, he saw a closed sign on the store's door and a post-it note that read Mrs. Carter was sick. When the shop remained closed for not just two days but a whole week, Evan was worried he'd never be able to get his "dream job."

85-year-old Mrs. Carter was a pretty woman who sold flowers for a living and he had befriended her when she helped him cross the street one day.

While Evan stood by the curb, smiling, Mrs. Carter turned around and saw him looking in her shop's direction. She waved hello to him, and he ran up to her and greeted her. "Can I help you today, young man? Do you want flowers?" Mrs. Carter asked. Evan smiled, "I'm looking for a job! Can you please hire me?"

"A job?" the elderly lady laughed, thinking Evan was too little for that. But Evan proudly replied he knew many things, like making sandwiches and helping his mom get grocery bags from the car. Mrs. Carter laughed and asked Evan how much money she would have to pay him if she hired him.

Evan shook his head. "All I want is a big bouquet (花束) for my mom. Her name is Stacey and her birthday is one week away. Mom says we should work hard for what we want. I want to work hard for that bouquet. Can you hire me?" Evan asked. Mrs. Carter was impressed and nodded.

After he was hired, Evan's happiness knew no bounds. For a whole week, he would come to Mrs. Carter's store in the evenings and help her, and having Evan around relieved Mrs. Carter's boredom while working. Some customers thought Evan was lovely and entertaining, so they bought more flowers. Mrs. Carter's business became better.

A week later, on Evan's last day on the job, Mrs. Carter was emotional. They had grown close for working together, and Evan had become like a grandchild to her. She was making a huge bouquet for his mother, and her eyes welled up. Mrs. Carter secretly placed one envelope into the bouquet. The envelope contained $1100. When handing him the bouquet, she said, "Will you come to see me someday, Evan? I'd be delighted to have you here."

"I will, Mrs. Carter! I will tell mom about you today! She'll be so happy!" Evan smiled and waved goodbye to Mrs. Carter.

  • 7、Flower gardens can be planted near paths by your house or in a separate fenced area for cutting flowers. Mixing marigolds (万寿菊) with your vegetable garden can help keep pests away, and it really works. Line your garden with lavender or peppermint to keep pests away. Did you know that deer are less likely to eat flowers with strong smells? Choose cut flower varieties with scents, such as roses and peonies (牡丹).

Flower gardens can also have pests, so you'll want to test what works in your area. In some regions, like the Pacific Northwest, slugs (蛞蝓) can eat your entire dahlia patch. In Michigan, roses struggle to survive extreme temperature changes from summer to winter, so be sure to choose flower varieties that are suitable for your growing zone and sun exposure.

This is just a starting point, but we hope we've given you some ideas to explore as you begin your sustainable garden. The great thing is, sustainable gardening is easier than farming with pesticides if you learn to manage your land properly. You can skip the weed killer, the chemical fertilizers, and the pest control chores if you just keep an eye on your plants or cut off diseased stems to prevent rot or mold from spreading.

One final note: drip irrigation is very popular in warmer climates for saving water, but these systems can block with dirt and be difficult to set up. You could try running a pipe from your faucet and splitting it with a timer into zones with wobbler (摇摆器) sprinklers. Set up the timer to run each sprinkler zone for about half an hour every morning in succession, and never water right before sunset if you're in a mold-prone (容易发霉的) climate. If you remove mold from roses and pest rot from stems and never plant a diseased dahlia to avoid spreading problems to other plants, you'll become a skilled sustainable gardener in no time.

(1)、What is one method suggested to keep pests away from your vegetable garden?
A、Planting roses around the edges. B、Planting marigolds along vegetables. C、Using chemical fertilizers if needed. D、Applying weed killer regularly.
(2)、What is a common challenge for roses in Michigan as mentioned in the passage?
A、Extreme temperature changes. B、Insect infestations in summer. C、Lack of sunlight and water. D、Poor soil quality and pests.

A、Sustainable gardening is more difficult than using pesticides. B、Sustainable gardening is easier with proper land management. C、The author thinks all gardens should use drip irrigation systems. D、The sustainable gardening is not suitable for all climates.
(4)、What is the main idea of the passage?
A、The benefits of using pesticides in gardening. B、The challenges of growing vegetables in a garden. C、The tips for creating and maintaining a sustainable flower garden. D、The importance of choosing the right flower varieties for different climates.
