1、There are some disabled people in the world who fight an unseen battle within themselves every day. They never cry or1, but with a big smile on their face. I call such people2 because they know the art of living life.
About nine years ago, I was in a car accident. The driver slept, and the car fell in the ditch. As a result, I suffered3 injuries: the radius and ulna (挠骨和尺骨) of my right arm were4; the lungs and livers were badly injured. But what changed me and my life5 was the injury of spine (脊柱). Many people came to6 me. They did try to find an ambulance but7. So I was thrown in the back of a jeep and8 to the nearby hospital, where I went through three major and two minor9.
The days I spent in the hospital were10. I was in severe pain, especially psychologically. I was11 with wearing the hospital gown, lying in the ward and looking at the white walls. I was so12 that I felt life was pointless and13. But then I realized instead of crying for what I had lost, I was going to fight against my fate. Thus, there came the best14 that I took in my entire life painting, a magic way to color my life.
That's how this experience helped me in15 an artist in me. So be grateful, be alive, and live every moment.

3、Chips, cookies and ice cream... These tasty foods, which are ultra-processed, may literally make you an "addict", as shown in a recent report in the British Medical Journal.
Simply put, ultra-processed foods (UPFs) are the foods that you can't re-create in your kitchen, according to the BBC. Produced in factories, they often have long lists of ingredients that you don't recognize, such as additives (添加剂), and are ready to eat or simply need to be heated.
The study's researchers linked UPFs to addiction which includes behaviors like strong desire and negative experiences when trying to stop eating. They analyzed 281 studies from 36 different countries and regions. The findings showed that 14 percent of adults and 12 percent of children have ultra-processed food addiction.
UPFs deliver carbohydrates and fat to the gut (肠) faster. Although nuts are high in fat, the fat can't be digested (消化) in the early stages. The fat in UPFs, however, is broken down before entering the first part of the small gut, which signals the brain to produce more dopamine-the "happy" chemical.
The additives in UPFs also impact the way the gut absorbs calories. To improve the flavor of the food or drink, man-made sugar is widely used in UPFs. However, it may combine with receptors in the gut, which makes it more sensitive to sweet food, eventually increasing the gut's ability to absorb sugar.
By considering that certain UPFs are "addictive", similar to cigarettes or alcohol, "We may be able to help improve global health," one of the study's authors, Ashley Gearhardt, said in a press release. They are also calling for more action to fight against such an addiction.
(1)、What is paragraph 2 mainly about?A、Additives in UPFs. B、The explanation of UPFs. C、The production process of UPFs. D、Differences between UPFs and natural foods.(2)、According to the study, what is the typical behavior of people addicted to UPFs?A、Feelings of guilt when eating them. B、Loss of interest in other types of food. C、Difficulty in fighting the desire to eat them. D、Increased need for carbohydrates and fat.(3)、Why are UPFs more likely to lead to addiction?A、They contain more nutrients than eaters' needs. B、They are lower in carbohydrates and fat digestion. C、They prevent the gut from burning calories and fat. D、They help produce a chemical that makes eaters happy.(4)、Which of the following is the best title for the text?A、The Significance of UPF Additives B、The Danger of UPFs C、The Benefits of Factory-Produced Food D、The Global Impact of UPF Addiction -

17、Parker Stewart, a sixteen-year-old student, knew last year that he wanted his independent study on the environment to have a broad impact on the community.
In order to "reduce the carbon footprint" Stewart planned to produce enough solar energy to1 his school's science labs. Now his plan is2 to happen. The installation of 30 solar panels is3 for late November.
As he began his research on solar4, he discovered a useful phone app. By entering an address, he could5 how much sunlight the6 receives each day.
7 how much sunlight it receives, Stewart found that his school building was the8 location.
Suggested by his science teacher, Debbie Wheeler, Parker first9 an energy audit (测算) of the science lab to see how much energy a10 lab uses per day.
Then, he started his research and11 the head of his school to fund him. Now the project has grown to12 a total of 30 panels. They are13 to generate enough energy to run all four of the science labs on14.
"It feels surreal (犹如梦幻的) to think that an idea I had stemming from my AP Environmental class would have this kind of15," said Stewart, expressing16 for Wheeler's help. Wheeler said the success of the project was17 Parker's efforts and willingness to follow through on the18 from start to finish.
"I've had other students talk about environmental initiatives on campus, but Parker had the19 and tenacity to make it happen," she said.
Parker said he would ultimately like to study20 engineering at Stanford University in California.

18、Most people try to become the extroverts (外向的人).. For example, quiet people are good observers. In such a fast-paced world, quiet people, with less time spent chatting, have more energy to observe situations and people. Asked a quiet person their thoughts on a situation or person and you may be surprised to receive an extremely reflective (沉思) answer..
Quiet people think before they speak. In a work discussion with colleagues, the quiet men and women hardly speak suddenly, and instead, they listen carefully. With less time spent talking, quiet people have time to really think before they speak. Because they are so selective with words, when they speak, it seems like the whole world stops to listen to what they have to say.
. With their quiet, relaxed temperament (性情), quiet people are often the ears that others run to for advice, and are also respected for their good listening skills and cautious words. Additionally, quiet people rarely annoy others in their presence and they often make others feel at ease.
Quiet people work on a more productive basis. Quiet people tend to be free from the distractions (分心的事) that often come from being around people all day long.. It is common to observe a quiet co-worker, alone in his or her office for hours at a time working on the quiet focus.
A. Quiet people know how to listen.
B. Quiet people seem easy to get along with.
C. It is rare to see a quiet friend speak rudely.
D. So they are able to accomplish a lot on their quiet focus.
E. However, actually quiet people have their own strengths.
F. In this way, they will take the time to ensure what they are saying is true.
G. Less talking means more reflecting and observing, so they won't miss much.

19、A lost Buddha (佛像) head statue, which recently made the journey back to China, appeared during the Spring Festival Gala of China Central Television. It was its first public show after being successfully sent back from Japan in December.

The head, dating back to the Sui Dynasty (581-618), was originally placed on the northern wall in the No 8 Tianlongshan Grottoes on the suburbs of Taiyuan, capital of Shanxi province, according to a statement from the National Cultural Heritage Administration (国家文物局).
It was believed to be stolen and lost overseas around 1924, along with about 240 Buddha images that were robbed in the 1920s. This 44.5-cm-high Buddha head is the first among these stolen items to be returned from Japan.
The National Cultural Heritage Administration learned in September a Chinese Buddha head statue labeled as from Tang Dynasty (618-907) was about to be sold in Tokyo, and was thought to be a stolen piece from Tianlongshan.
The administration soon began the process of returning it home. In October, the auction house in Tokyo, whose board chairman Zhang Rong is a Chinese from Hangzhou, agreed to stop the auction.
After discussions between the National Cultural Heritage Administration, Zhang, and the local holder of the relic in Japan, the Buddha head was bought by Zhang and finally given away to the administration.
The transfer ceremony (交接仪式) for the statue was held in the Chinese Embassy (大使馆) in Tokyo in November, and it arrived in Beijing in December.
After being shown on the Spring Festival Gala, the Buddha head statue will be displayed in Beijing Lu Xun Museum from the first day of the Lunar New Year to Mar 14.

20、In the course of working my way through school, I took many jobs I would rather forget. But none of these jobs was as dreadful as my job in an apple plant. The work was hard; the pay was poor; and, most of all, the working conditions were terrible.
First of all, the job made huge demands on my strength. For ten hours a night, I took boxes that rolled down a metal track and piled them onto a truck. Each box contained twelve heavy bottles of apple juice. I once figured out that I was lifting an average of twelve tons of apple juice every night.
I would not have minded the difficulty of the work so much if the pay had not been so poor. I was paid the lowest wage of that time—two dollars an hour. Because of the low pay, I felt eager to get as much as possible. I usually worked twelve hours a night but did not take home much more than $100 a week.
But even more than the low pay, what made me unhappy was the working conditions. During work I was limited to two ten-minute breaks and an unpaid half hour for lunch. Most of my time was spent outside loading trucks with those heavy boxes in near-zero-degree temperatures. The steel floors of the trucks were like ice, which made my feet feel like stone. And after the production line shut down at night and most people left, I had to spend two hours alone cleaning the floor.
I stayed on the job for five months, all the while hating the difficulty of the work, the poor money, and the conditions under which I worked. By the time I left, I was determined never to go back there again.
