Josefa Marin went to New York from Mexico in 1987, supporting her daughter back home with the $140 a week she earned at a sweater factory. With that small income, she had to collect recyclables, trading in cans for five cents each.
When the clothing factory closed down in the late 2000s, she became a full-time recycler, picking up cans and bottles to make ends meet.
Marin's story is not unique. Millions around the world make a living from picking through waste and reselling it — a vital role that keeps waste manageable. In New York City, the administrative department collects only about 28 percent of the cans that could be recycled. Rubbish collectors keep millions of additional recyclables out of landfills every year.
Yet collectors are ruled out by government policies. The United States Supreme Court in 1988 stated that household garbage is public property once it's on the street. That enables police to search rubbish for evidence, but that protection hasn't always been extended to recyclers. And in places like New York City, which is testing city-owned locked containers to hide garbage from rats, containers are made clearly inaccessible for collectors.
"There's value in the waste, and we feel that value should belong to the people, not the city or the corporations", says Ryan Castalia, director of a nonprofit recycling and community center in Brooklyn.
Recognized or not, waste pickers have long been treated with disrespect. Marin recalls an occasion when someone living next to a building where she was collecting cans threw water at her. "It doesn't mean I am less of a person than anyone else because I recycle", she says.
Some governments are starting to realize that protecting the environment and humanity go hand in hand. The United Nation's 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, for example, calls for an end to poverty and all the risks it brings.
(1)、Why does the author start the passage with Marin's story?A、To suggest waste collectors' importance. B、To reflect laid-off workers' hardship. C、To praise her devotion to her daughter. D、To show the seriousness of unemployment.(2)、What can we learn about the waste mentioned in Paragraph 4?A、It is always available on the street for collectors. B、It is public property no matter where it is. C、It is actually only accessible for certain groups. D、It is hidden in containers for rats.(3)、What would Marin agree with?A、Business is business. B、No job is noble or humble. C、The early bird catches worms. D、One good turn deserves another.(4)、What's the writing purpose of this passage?A、To argue how important it is to get rid of poverty. B、To call on governments to work hand in hand to protect the environment. C、To prove that unemployed people can make a living by collecting recyclables. D、To tell that environmental protection is closely related to preserving humanity. -

A new form of real estate is popping up along the beaches of South Africa, which are just big enough to fit a family of African penguins. Their unique selling point: a safe and cool place for penguins to breed (繁殖).
Historically, the penguins dug holes in layers of guano (鸟粪), but in the 19th century, traders started selling guano as fertilizer, leaving the penguins and their eggs increasingly exposed to predators (捕食者) and the burning sun. This has caused African penguin populations to decrease. That's why conservationists have come to the rescue with the African Penguin Nest Project (APNP), which aims to employ artificial nests to provide penguin parents a safe and shaded place to raise their chicks.
While guano trade petered out by the late 1800s, recreating the layers that accumulated over thousands of years isn't an option, because seabird populations have declined so much over time and it would take around 600 years to produce one usable guano layer. Hence, the project decided to build artificial nests. At first glance, they look fairly simple--a domed structure made from two molded shells of fabric coated in ceramic slurry (陶瓷浆料),with a small entrance measuring about 20 centimeters wide.
Getting the right temperature and dampness inside the nest was the toughest and most crucial part. The two-layer design and ventilation holes (通风孔) create an air conditioning effect, while the white paint reflects the sun, helping to maintain an interior temperature of less than 35 degrees Celsius.
The project started to use the nests in late 2018."Within a matter of minutes, penguins were running into them," says Graham, coordinator of APNP. "That tells you how desperate they are for any opportunity to find a safe place to nest. However, population recovery relies on more than merely giving African penguins a safe place to breed. It's not simply a case of ‘we give them a nest, the species are saved ‘. There has to be more."
(1)、What do we know about artificial nests?A、They function better than natural nests. B、They are designed and built scientifically. C、They are unique attractions of South Africa. D、They are equipped with mini air-conditioners.(2)、What is the goal of APNP?A、To raise money to preserve penguins. B、To promote the sale of artificial nests. C、To help penguins fight against diseases. D、To provide habitable shelters for penguins.(3)、What does the underlined phrase "petered out" in Paragraph 3 probably mean?A、turned up B、dried out C、faded away D、fell apart(4)、Which of the following statements might Graham agree with?A、Penguins breed more chicks in safer places. B、Various conservation efforts need be combined. C、Artificial nests have achieved the desired effect. D、Artificial nests should be applied to other species. -

Imagine sitting there sipping coffee when suddenly you see someone about to die. What would you do? On Dec. 26, Gelinne, 60, was staring out of his house in Edgewater, Maryland, at frozen Beards Creek when his daughter Aimee spotted the Piper Cherokee. "Look!" she cried. Gelinne looked up just in time to see a small aircraft a few hundred yards away, losing altitude.
As the plane disappeared behind the trees, Gelinne, a former Navy commander and current cybersecurity expert realized it was going to land in the creek (小溪). He flashed on a moment from more than 20 years earlier: Sept. 11, 2001. Gelinne was at work in the Pentago in Washington, D.C., when terrorists crashed a jet into the building. He fled the chaos but has always wondered if he could have stayed inside and helped. "To the right was the crisis, and to the left was escape. I don't even know if I could've gone right, but I went left," he recalled.
On this day, Gelinned didn't hesitate. He ran down to the waterfront. The plane had skidded (打滑) to as top on the broad, frozen creek, far from shore. It was now sinking. The pilot was standing on the wing. Gelinne knew from his Navy training that even a few minutes in the icy water could kill the pilot. He tested the ice with his foot and decided not to risk walking on it. Then he and his son, John J., 37, pulled out two kayaks (橡皮船).
The kayaks' paddles (桨) proved too flimsy, so the pair tried using shovels (铲) to push the boats along. It was exhausting. When Gelinne reached the plane, it had broken through the ice and sunk; only its tail was visible. The pilot was standing on a tail wing, submerged (浸没) up to his chest, surrounded by open water. Gelinne nudged (轻推) his kayak off the ice and into the water, paddling toward the pilot and thinking, "What if he panics? What if I flip (翻)?"
With his son nearby, Gelinne focused on keeping the pilot calm, joking, "Just hang on to the boat as if you were hugging your wife." The pilot grabbed the kayak's bow. Now the three men were floating together. By now, a police officer had arrived and radioed for help. A boat from the Maryland Department of Natural Resources appeared, breaking through ice as it arrived. It picked up the pilot, Steve Couchman, 71, and sent him to be treated for minor injuries. Later the boat returned to help Gelinne, now exhausted to shore while John Jr. made his own way back.
"I'm 60 years old," Gelinne says. "There was no way I could get him to shore." Still, he was satisfied he'd gone the right way that day.
(1)、What does "the Piper Cherokee" in paragraph 1 refer to?A、The pilot. B、The kayak. C、The rescue team. D、The sinking aircraft.(2)、What did Gelinne regret about Sept. 11, 2001?A、He escaped from the scene. B、He helped handle the chaos. C、He fought against the terrorists. D、He stayed inside to save the injured.(3)、Which of the following best describes Gelinne?A、Honest and ambitious. B、Professional and dedicated. C、Humorous and calm. D、Helpful and selfless.(4)、Why Gelinne was satisfied in the last paragraph?A、He dialed 911 immediately. B、He didn't hesitate to escape from the ice. C、He decided to treat Steve for minor injuries. D、He chose to deal with the crisis bravely. -

When compared to (healthy) plastic, bamboo is a highly renewable, natural material that is biodegradable(可生物降解的) and (become) the "green gold" of modern times in recent years because it has so many good qualities.
