2、I never considered myself a person for hiking. But on my first trip to the Republic of Georgia, every traveler I1 spoke about a hike in the Greater Caucasus Mountains that I absolutely couldn't2.
That's why I decided to have a3 — hiking from Kazbegi Town to Gergeti Trinity Church. Though the trip is a short one, based on the church's location atop a mountain, I knew it was going to be a4 climb — especially after six weeks of traveling around.
I5 Kazbegi Town on a cold, foggy afternoon and decided to begin the hiking to the6 the next morning. Luckily, a(n)7 over the breakfast table at my guesthouse8 me. I got chatting with a couple who had done the hike and had a crucial9 for me: Don't follow the10 route, but instead, take the path on the left side of the mountain.
As it turned out, the main route — the route everyone else11 — was impossibly steep(陡峭的), but the lesser-walked path was a12 path along a mountain stream. Had I tried to take the main path, I never would have13 the walk; however, following this easier route, I14 something totally foreign: A hike I actually enjoyed! I felt so proud.

3、A "spark bird" is the species that inspires someone to start birdwatching, namely birding. For Trish Kane, that bird was the cardinal (红衣凤头鸟). Hearing cardinals' calls was an initial step toward over 1,960 hours of birding, 33 field notebooks and a career change. In her book, Birding to Change the World, Kane charts her transformation from a journalist to an environmentalist.
In 2005, a terrible hurricane hit Kane's hometown. After it, she had to cope with the loss of her home. In watching the cardinals and other birds, she found relief. Soon she started bringing her students along. "My students stared at me in disbelief when I told them I had never cared about birds before," Kane writes. "I suddenly wondered how many creatures would die because of the way we lived." She decided to pursue an environmentally-conscious career. In 2007, she took a course to study environmental science.
Most of the book focuses on Kane's efforts to preserve Warner Park, an ideal location satisfying birding requirements for her class. She successfully campaigned to stop the construction of a parking lot. Her activism snowballed into a local bird watching and protecting organization. It eventually became part of Kane's doctoral research, and launched a birding class that pairs middle school students with college-student advisors.
The book shows readers that a good knowledge of nature doesn't require a degree. Take Jeremy, a seemingly uninterested boy in Kane's birding class. When reporters joined an outing, the normally quiet Jeremy started talking excitedly about the bunting, a small blue bird. Kane soon learned that he had secretly taken to studying the field guide given to him by his advisor.
At its core, Birding to Change the World is about how people and birds today depend on one another. "For birds, that dependence is concrete. For thousands of years, our species has seen birds as a symbol of liberation," Kane writes. In her case, it is liberation from the grief and depression that the hurricane brought. "Bird by bird, they carve a new pathway in my life, a joyful pathway."

D、Her students' disbelief in her ignorance of birds.(2)、What can we learn about Kane from paragraph 3?A、She worked hard on her latest book. B、She protected Warner Park on her own. 4、Tourists come in flocks from all parts of China to Rongjiang, a small county in a remote mountainous area, which has recently become popular for its "Village Super League", creating a spectacular sports carnival in China.
During a match in May, Wu Chuguo, a decoration worker from Liubaitang village, Rongjiang County, scored a spectacular 40-meter goal that ignited (点燃) the crowd. Wu said he was influenced by elders in his village and fell in love with the sport. In the county, rural soccer matches have taken place regularly since the 1990s. When there was a lack of facilities, soccer players used barren land as a field and wooden stakes for the posts. The boundaries were marked out with lime powder. When they couldn't gather enough players, they played futsal, a soccer-based game played on a smaller hard court.
In recent years, the county has focused on gymnastics, soccer, rock climbing and other sports. What sets the Village Super League apart from other sports events are the vivid displays of ethnic cultures and traditions at the tournament. As players of both teams walk on the field for a game, they are accompanied by their cheering squads (啦啦队) dressed in traditional ethnic costumes and carrying local specialties. The halftime break features folk songs and dance performances, while ethnic costumes are also on display.
"hope that more and more tourists will come to Rongjiang to watch the matches, enjoy the folk customs and local cuisine, and have fun," said Xiong Zhuqing, a melon grower who is also a cheerleader. She says she has sold over 10,000 kilograms of watermelons since the start of the tournament. As of June 27, a total of 654 new businesses were established, including 91 in the catering sector, 188 in retail, and 195 in agriculture and food processing, the local government said.

5、I used to want to be a zookeeper, but after becoming a wildlife rescue worker, I found that this work is even more valuable than I thought. Not only can I help injured wild animals, but I can also facilitate their return to the wild. We make every effort to accomplish this goal: hiding food under rocks and fallen leaves to simulate (模拟) a natural environment, or doing our best to maintain some distance from the animals and prevent them from bonding with humans.
I am often asked whether I feel at all sad when it's time to release the animals — to tell you the truth, I'm always pretty willing to let them go. All of my efforts have been toward allowing them to return to the wild, and the wild is where they belong, so there's no reason for reluctance on my part. But it is true that sometimes there is no way for an animal to go back to the wild, or to keep it from bonding with humans.
Last year, I rescued a light-vented bulbul (白头鹎). The bird, initially lacking feathers, recovered under our care. It was scheduled for release during its adolescent period, during which it's relatively easy to socialize. But an injury to its flight feathers delayed its return to the wild. The birdimprinted on humans during the following two months, which was a critical cognitive (认知的) development period, leading it to return to us after being released.
When we engage in wildlife rescue, we have to teach animals how to maintain a high degree of caution around humans. If they become too trusting of humans, it is very likely that way, our success depends not on the animals, or on our work here, but more so on the attitude humans would not be a bad thing, and our release attempt could then be successful.
(1)、What do we know about the author's job?A、It was his initial career choice. B、It forbids close interaction with animals. C、It mainly aims to cure the injured animals. D、It involves both rescue and release efforts.(2)、Which of the following best describes the author's feeling to release the rescued animals?A、Ambitious. B、Cheerful. C、Sorrowful. D、Anxious.(3)、Which is closest in meaning to "imprinted on" in paragraph 3?A、Was attached to. B、Was aware of. C、Was sensitive to. D、Was cautious of.(4)、What is the key to the success of wildlife rescue work?A、Animals' faith in humans. B、Human's knowledge in the work. C、Human's attitude towards animals. D、Animals' ability to survive in the wild. -

The flagship of John, King of Denmark, caught fire and sank in the Baltic Sea in 1495. There, it lay undiscovered until members of a local dive club came across it in the 1970s; unaware of its significance, they did not report it to archaeologists until 2000, and not until 2013 was the wreck's identity confirmed. Considered one of the best-preserved shipwrecks of the period, it has slowly been revealing its secrets.
Black Swan
In May 2007, a Florida-based company announced that, using underwater robots, it had discovered a shipwreck in the Atlantic, code-named (代号为) "Black Swan". However, the government of Spain claimed that the wreck was the Nuestra Senora de las Mercedes, a Spanish ship that sank off the coast of Portugal in 1804 following a battle with four British navy ships. 10、How to be energetic all the time
Many people often lack energy and feel tired. If you are one of them, take the following suggestions to become an energetic person and make use of your full potential.
Manage your stress. If you are upset by emotions that result from stress, you will likely find that you have run out of energy. To control your stress, consider talking things out with a close friend or perhaps consulting a psychiatrist.
Take a nap when it is possible. Although you might be busy every day, there is always some time to get a few minutes of shut-eye. Don't sleep too long, or you might experience difficulty in falling asleep normally that night, which will throw off your whole sleep schedule.
Foods that have too much sugar can lead to glucose fluctuations (血糖波动) which then cause energy levels to decrease. Many people suffer from low energy due to a lack of protein. For fast and effective energy change, you can eat a few handfuls of nuts.
Schedule your time in a practical, realistic manner. Being too busy can decrease your productivity and do harm to your mental health. So try to get one day of relaxation a week.
Exercise out. Exercising out ensures sound sleep at night, and it helps oxygen to circulate, providing the cells with higher amounts of energy to burn. It also leaves you feeling refreshed and full of energy.
A. Eat less.
B. Sing alone or get up and dance.
C. Consider what you eat and drink.
D. Naps should be a maximum of 30 minutes.
E. In other words, emotions caused by stress eat up your energy.
F. This allows your body to get enough rest and gain energy for next week.
G. One highly effective way to become energetic is doing exercise regularly.

12、Dorothea Dix was born in 1802 in Massachusetts. When she was 12 years old, she left her unhappy home to live with her grandmother in Boston. There Dorothea went to school and was so quick at her lessons that two years later she went back to Worcester, Massachusetts and taught in a school for little children. She was only fourteen and rather small for her age. Anyway, she proved herself a good teacher, and the children loved her and respected her. In 1821, she opened a school for girls in Boston.
Gradually, her health broke down, and she began to think that she could never work any more, but after a long rest in England, she came back to America and did something far greater than teaching. She went through the whole country where she first observed the inhumane treatment of the mentally ill. During Dorothea's traveling for nearly two years throughout the state, and meeting similar conditions, she always spoke kindly to the ill-treated, but she spoke wrathfully to the men who ill-treated them. In January 1843, she submitted to the Massachusetts legislature (立法机关) a detailed report of her fully documented findings.

13、The TV series Wolf Pack starring Sarah Michelle Gellar is centered around the lives of a group of Los Angeles teenagers, whose lives are changed forever when a supernatural creature is freed after a series of unexplained wildfires break out.
Not much is known about Gellar's character on the show, except for the fact that she is playing Kristin Ramsey, an expert who moves to Los Angeles to find the person who started the wildfires. She spoke to Fox News Digital about her big return to TV, and explained why she thought she was drawn to projects featuring monsters (怪物).
"For me, it's always about the stories, and in talking today, we have discovered that the superhuman allows you to tell the most human stories because it really allows you to use these monsters to explore emotions, fears and anxieties that you can't experience in other worlds," Gellar explained.
"I think it's a really important conversation that people will be along for the ride, but then realize what the meaning is behind all of it," she added. Gellar's co-star, Rodrigo, agreed with her, saying he hoped audiences could look at the deeper meanings behind the monsters on the show and realize they were all metaphors (隐喻) to discuss in our own inner monsters."

14、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Susan had a secret: she loved robots. She had helped her dad in his workshop and knew a lot about motors, but her friends didn't know this.
One day, she heard Alex and Jacob talking about their robot, Robbie. They were preparing for a big competition but Robbie wasn't working properly. Susan was surprised by their courage, as they always seemed unpopular among the boys. She felt bad for them and wanted to help.
On the school bus home, Susan sat behind Alex and Jacob, who were still trying to fix their robot. "This is impossible! The legs move before you press the switch and stop after you press the switch!" Alex said, looking at Robbie's legs, which were not moving right. "The competition is only eight days away!" Jacob looked sad. He thought they were going to lose.
"Umm, how did you connect the wires from the switch?" Susan asked quietly over their shoulders. Alex turned and gave her a cautious look. Susan smiled and asked, "Did you connect the NO wire or the NC wire to the motor?" The boys stared at her as if she had just landed from Mars.
Susan gently took the robot and pointed out the wire connected to the motor. "Here's the problem!" She explained that it was the NC wire. It means the circuit (电路) is Normally Closed. She then pulled a loose wire out of the robot and explained that it was the NO wire, which means Normally Open. "If you connect this wire instead, Robbie will walk when you press the switch." Susan handed the robot back to Alex, who was staring at her with his mouth open.
"Change the wires and see," she said before getting off the bus. Ten minutes later, her phone rang. It was Jacob: "Your idea worked, and we're wondering if you could come over and help improve our Robbie." Susan smiled. She knew she had made the right choice.

Reggie didn't like it, but his friend Michael hated it more and decided things had to be3. He proposed the Day of Silence: in honour of Reggie, they should set aside one day for4 people, when everyone would have to wear earplugs (耳塞).

18、Over Half of Young Chinese Block Parents on WeChat Moments
We all know the feeling — you want to check what someone you care about has been up to on social media, and suddenly you find you are denied access to their feeds. It's an instant start of mixed emotions and speculations — When did this happen? Did I do anything wrong? What are they attempting to hide from me?
And that's what half of Chinese parents have to deal with when they try to browse their children's WeChat Moments, also known as "Friends' Circle", as suggested by a recent survey released by Tencent, the Chinese Internet giant. According to the report, entitled Annual White Paper on Family Affection on WeChat Moments, about 52 percent of WeChat users aged 18 to 29 block their parents on Moments, a major feature on the platform that allows users to share everything they like with their WeChat contacts.
About 62 percent of the young interviewees said that parents "are neurotic about everything", along with reasons such as fear of parents' disapproval, rejection to parents' nagging (唠叨), and seeking privacy. "My parents don't know Moments very well, so I just told them I don't use it anymore," said Qin Jianping, a 28-year-old son. He added that his parents had been leaving comments requesting updates on his dating status on every post he made on Moments since he broke up with his girlfriend two years ago. Xie Yun, a 26- year-old daughter, said that while she didn't block her parents entirely, they were in a specific group to which she only shares positive posts. "I don't want my parents to see minor setbacks in my life," she said, adding that once her parents saw a Moments picture of her hand getting slightly burned while cooking, and they traveled all the way to her city to make sure she was all right.
The report also found that more than 49 percent of Chinese parents use WeChat as a main channel to communicate with their children. Roughly 36 percent of the parents who took the survey said they checked every post made by their children. When asked how they would react to being blocked, some parents said they would initiate a conversation with their children to find out the reason, while others said they wouldn't care. And some parents just outsmart their kids in this hide-and-seek game online. "I didn't realize I was blocked until I compared what I could see on my phone to what my son's aunt could see," said Chen, a mother of a 27-year-old son. "I chose to remain silent on this and now I'm following my son's posts through his aunt."

19、A supersonic airline like Concorde, flies at twice the speed of sound. A passenger can leave London at noon and arrive in New York at ten o'clock that same morning! There is a five-hour time difference between the two cities and Concorde can fly the Atlantic in only three hours. That evening the passenger will feel it is time to go to bed when it is only six o'clock in the evening. Airline pilots suffer from this jet lag very much. It may be in the middle of the night in Hong Kong but their stomachs are still on London time, where it is dinner time. Pilots and other airline crew have to adjust to constant changes in time. That is why they often look fifty years old when they are only forty. This adjustment to sudden changes causes all sorts of problems. Businessmen who travel from one side of the world to the other in one day are told never to make important decisions during the first twenty-four hours after landing.
Air travel is getting faster all the time. Engineers say that soon people will be "shot" to their destinations in huge rockets, which will be able to carry a quarter of passenger capacity in general airliner at a time. These rockets will be shot high above the earth's atmosphere and land on the other side of the earth forty-five minutes after take-off. They will be able to cross the Pacific Ocean, such as from Los Angeles to Honolulu, in only eighteen minutes.
But, of course, passengers will be faced with the same problems on the ground that they face at present. We shall still spend hours getting to the airport. Today, the shortest part of the journey and the least difficult is in the air. The worst and longest part is on the roads leading from the center of town to the airport. The roads become crowded increasingly while our planes become faster and faster.
(1)、If you leave London at eight o'clock by plane whose speed is the same as that of sound, you will arrive in New York at .A、three o'clock B、six o'clock C、nine o'clock D、twelve o'clock(2)、Pilots often look older than they really are because .A、they eat dinner in the middle of the night B、they suffer a lot from the changes in time C、they have to work at the weekend D、they live far away from the airport(3)、According to the text, the number of passengers in a general airliner is the one in a huge rocket at a time.A、four times larger than B、a quarter as large as C、seventy-five percent of D、five times larger than(4)、What can be learned according to the passage?A、people will spend less time on the ground as air travel is getting faster B、a supersonic plane can fly the Pacific in only eighteen minutes C、the rocket is the fastest and least difficult means of travel D、the speed of sound is only half that of a Concorde -
20、When my daughter Abigail got her learner's permit a few months ago, I was appreciative of those drivers who saw a nervous teenager behind the wheel and treated her with patience as we drove around our neighborhood and the country roads close by.
Her first travels around our part of the Southern End were rather slow (cars piled up behind us). So thank you, nice people.
But I want to single out other drivers for my appreciation. I will call you "friends".
But no kidding, I sincerely want to thank you "friends", because you have taught my daughter not to take anything for granted on the roads. You deserve the credit for making her a defensive driver.
I warned her about "friends" like you, but your actions speak much louder than my words.
She's watched you go through red lights and stop signs, turn without signaling, fail to yield at the crossroads, or hesitate at a stop sign and then pull out into her path at the last millisecond. I especially appreciated the "friend" who pulled up beside us the other night at a stop sign on a two-way road and took off quickly as Abigail just started to make her move.
"What was that!" Abigail shouted.
"That's a ‘friend'!" I yelled.
And then there are those of you who find a slow-moving vehicle (farm machinery down our way) in your lane and swing out into the opposite lane to pass, oblivious of vehicles coming in the opposite direction.
My daughter has learned that a tractor coming her way means there might be an impatient "friend" hiding, ready to cross into her lane.
That's an invaluable lesson. Thanks.
And thank you to all the walkers, adults and children, who appear from between cars. "Be ready to stop" is a lesson that you have taught my daughter well. At the same time, I have taught her the rules for yielding to walkers.
Teaching a teen to be a defensive driver isn't easy. I want you to know that I couldn't have done it without you, my "friends".

D、has become an experienced driver in a few months.(3)、What is the author's attitude towards the drivers whom he calls "friends"?A、Grateful B、Indifferent C、Sympathetic D、Annoyed(4)、The underlined word "yield" in Paragraph 6 means .A、make way for you B、give up hope C、shout at you D、produce crops(5)、What is the author's purpose in writing the passage?A、To express his thanks to his friends. B、To warn people to obey traffic rules. C、To advise teens to be careful when driving. D、To explain to teens how to be a good driver.
