How to Set Goals

Whether you have small dreams or high expectations, setting goals allows you to plan how you want to move through life. 

Find out your life goals. Ask yourself some important questions about what you want for your life. What do you want to achieve today, in a year, and in your lifetime? The answers to this question can be as general as "I want to be happy" or "I want to help people". 

Set specific (具体的) goals. Be specific and realistic about what it is that you want to achieve. Research shows that setting a specific goal makes you more likely to achieve it.  For example, "Be healthier" is too big and vague to be a helpful goal. "I want to eat more vegetables, and I want to run a marathon" is better.

Write out your goals. Be detailed be clear, and include your steps.  Keep your list in a place where you can get informed frequently. This will help keep you motivated.

You may find yourself set in your ways concerning broad life goals, but take the time to reevaluate your smaller goals. Are you accomplishing them according to your timeline? Are they still necessary to keep you on track towards your larger life goals? Allow yourself the flexibility (灵活性) to make some small changes to your goals.

Have you heard of shikumen houses (石库门) in Shanghai？ It is a type of architecture that combines Western culture and traditional Chinese residential characteristics. It uses stone as door frames (门框) and solid wood in black lacquer (漆) as door leaves (门扇)．Over the past 100 years，many significant historical events have been seen in shikumen houses, such as the first National Congress of the Communist Party of China in 1921.

Unfortunately, many Shangbai locals don't even know about shikumen houses, and they are disappearing due to the development of the city. To make a difference, a group of students from Shanghai International Studies University has established a studio called "Meeting Shikumen". "We probably can't stop them from disappearing," said Mei Zi, 18, the leader of the group. "But we want to let more people know that shikumen houses exist."

Starting in 2022, the students opened accounts on WeChat and Instagram to share information about shikumen houses, such as the significance of their architectural design and how they reflect Shanghai culture. To draw more young people's attention to shikumen houses, they also created original IP figures called "Kuku" and "Tiantian". The students even created a series of WeChat stickers of Kuku and Tiantian, which now have been used by more than 10,000 people.

"This project has become a tradition of our university and will be carried on by students," Mei said. "In the future, we want to interact with international students in Shanghai, by taking them on theme tours of shikumen houses, to share shikumen with people from various cultures."

When White met the pit bull puppy in 2018, Darby was young, playful, strong as an ox. Then, in the summer of 2019, came Darby's date with destiny.

White was fishing in Northern Caledonia's Bodega Bay. He left Darby, then a year old and 100 pounds, in the parked car with windows down, while he cast his line a few yards away. The fish weren't biting, White recall, until, suddenly, they were. 

At first, White thought he had hooked a stingray. But as he reeled (绕线) it in, he realized it was a sevengill shark, about 6 feet long. Not uncommon but still dangerous He brought it close and carefully unhooked it, expecting it to swim away. It didn't. The shark bit his ankle. 

"All of a sudden there was blood everywhere," says White. He yelled for help, hoping the fishermen down the beach could hear. But they didn't seem to know what was going on. Fortunately, Darby did. He jumped out of the car and ran toward the water. He ran right up to the shark and sank his teeth into its gills (鱼鳃). 

"That just made the shark bite down harder," White says. Darby backed off, then regrouped and attacked the shark's tail. The shark released its grip (紧抓), and White managed to push it into shallow water, where it swam off. "The whole thing took less than a minute," White says, "but it left plenty of damage." White was able to stop the bleeding and get to a hospital, where he learned that the wound was very severe. 

That would've been the end of it, had Darby's story not gone viral. White was contacted by NBC News and CNN. That's when the countless cash offers started to come in. But the big dog was not for sale.

Finally, the bell rang. "Don't forget to practice your class presentation at home!" Miss Bella cried as everyone started talking and packing their school bags. Jessy felt sick. She hated having to read aloud in class. She was sure everyone got really bored listening to her. Once, when Jessy was reading out her holiday diary, Lee was even looking at his watch, a silver and blue one which seemed just magical.

Jessy watched Lee walk ahead of her as they left school. He seemed so clever, and he had a certain sort of shining confidence. He was just one of those people who were good at everything. Jessy sighed. As she turned the corner, she saw Lee's watch lying right in the middle of the path.

Jessy knew she should just pick it up and return it to him, but she didn't want to run after him. Jessy bent down quickly, picked up the watch and ran home. On arriving home, Jessy put it on almost without thinking. She was surprised it fitted so well. She walked to the mirror and started practicing her speech. Words just flooded out of her. "I'm going to talk about swimming. I have been lucky. I've won lots of competitions. But when I'm in a race, I'm not really thinking about winning. I'm just loving the feeling of being in the water…" Jessy laughed with excitement. She walked across the room. She suddenly seemed to have a certain sort of confidence. Turning back to the mirror, Jessy saw a flash of light from the watch in the glass. The flashes of silver seemed almost magical. So maybe Lee's watch really DID have something magic about it.

The next day, as the lesson began, Miss Bella asked who was going to be brave and go first. Nobody moved. Jessy slowly raised her arm. Before Miss Bella could say anything, there was a shout from behind. "She's stolen my watch!" Lee said angrily, "It went missing at school yesterday."

But  the hope wasn't lost. Soon after the quakes, teams were organized to dig out the tapped and bury the dead. Many more people,  (include) workers and doctors, came to provide help. Though all the efforts, the city began to breathe again.

Today,  new Tangshan was built upon the earthquake ruins, which has proved to the entire world that in times of disaster, people must unify and show the wisdom to stay positive and rebuild for a  (bright) future.

We're living in modern times and it seems like we never have enough time. We all get the same amount in a day, a week, and a year. It just depends on how we use it. Rather than all getting the same amount of time to spend, ? What if we could control the way we consume our time to a greater extent? Here are three unexpected ways to give ourselves more time. 

Help others 

This might seem strange, but people who have more time often give it away through volunteering and helping others. A study that compared the opportunities to waste time, spend time on oneself, or spend a gift of time found that giving time selflessly actually increased people's perception of time. ? 

When we do the same things every day, our brains tend to take shortcuts, and our efforts don't require as much conscious thought. This makes time seem to go more quickly. In contrast, when we do things in new or unexpected ways, our brains engage more consciously. We experience time as slowing down because we're more present and putting more work into the thinking that goes into the task. We can apply this research by selecting when we choose to do things in new ways versus our typical way. . But if you want to extend your perception of time, take the winding road or a new route on the way home from the office. 

Take control

. It's a problem when we have too much to do in too little time, especially when we're not the ones deciding how we spend our time. We can take back a sense of having enough time by incorporating as much control as possible, and by redesigning our days. Even the simple act of pausing for 10 minutes to think about how you want to spend your time-which project to start on, which call to return, or which email to prioritize-can reassert a greater sense of time abundance.
