1、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
When entering seventh grade, I was excited about many new things, but one thing really bothered me — I started getting acne (长青春痘). Initially, it was just a little, but then, it seemed like overnight, my face was covered with it. I tried to hide it with my hair, but it just wouldn't work.
I was consumed with worry that my peers would make fun of me. I couldn't concentrate in class, as my mind was constantly preoccupied with my appearance, causing my grades to slip sharply. I started to feel inferior (自卑的) to my classmates and even avoid interaction with them. I tried to get rid of the acne. I washed my face multiple times a day, using all sorts of acne creams I found. I also avoided snacks that might cause it. But all ended up in vain.
One day, our school announced a sports day and the teacher asked us to form our own teams. As a sports enthusiast, I had been eagerly expecting it, but I was scared that no one would join me because of how I looked. Standing in front of the mirror, I kept imagining how my classmates would react when I asked them to team up with me. The fear of rejection held me back from approaching them.
But then, Kim came to me, "Do you want to join us for the relay race? I've seen you run before and you've got the speed. If you join us, we'll have a good chance to win." In disbelief, I managed to utter "Yes," still feeling self-conscious but also incredibly grateful.
I, together with another three classmates, signed up for the relay race. We trained for it and discussed strategies together, none paying attention to my acne. Because of my advantage in speed, I was even assigned to run the last leg, which was the most crucial part.

A red panda moves along the branch of an evergreen tree, placing one front paw (前爪) in front of other like a gymnast on a balance beam (平衡木). Despite its name, the red panda is not (close) related to the giant panda but (share) similar habitats and a diet primarily consisting of bamboo (leaf) and shoots. While giant pandas spend most time walking around on the ground looking for food, red pandas spend about 90 percent of their time in the trees. In fact, red pandas have adapted so well life in the trees that they're famous for their incredible balancing skills. They even have a special wrist bone that helps when climbing. Spending time in trees is these animals avoid enemies, such as snow leopards. Their reddish coats and white face markings provide cover in the red-brown and white trees where they live.
However, red pandas are endangered, as their forest homes are being cut down their fur as well as their adorableness might put them in more danger. China has taken significant steps (protect) this rare species, such as establishing nature reserves, and (promote) sustainable land management practices. Some organizations are using high-tech methods to track poachers (偷猎者), like taking a DNA sample from a red panda (rescue) from the illegal trade market.

5、Parents often focus on children's academic aspects of things. Math? Check. Reading? Done. Writing? Complete. Yet, handwork is often left for last. We live in a world that values math and literacy, science and technology. Does it really matter if our children know how to sew, knit or craft? They are the makers, eager to bring what they have imagined to life. Others are reluctant. They may struggle with delicate skills. Trying to make anything becomes a source of frustration. While we may no longer need handcrafts to live a functional life in society, there are still many benefits to learning how to do them.
Using tools of various types to create helps build delicate skills. When first learning how to sew, knit, woodwork, bake and so on, one must learn how to use the tools safely and correctly. Moreover, learning how to follow a pattern to obtain the desired result is an important skill as well. But that's not all. .
Once basic skills are developed, there is a great deal of opportunity for creativity. Children can come up with their own plans and patterns. They can experiment with different stitches (针法), materials, designs, etc. Creative thinking is also highly valued in many workplaces today. While making something by hand takes time, sticking with it develops both patience and persistence. Additionally, handwork can be a break from our technologically driven world. Creating something both beautiful and useful is worthwhile.
You can start by teaching your children something you enjoyed and learning together with your children. Handwork can be positive to your family life!
A. This is understandable.
B. We all enjoy the thrill of saying, "I made that! "
C. Some children are naturally drawn to arts and crafts.
D. Finally, you will develop the ability to do handwork.
E. However, handwork is essential to children's development.
F. It also increases mathematical understanding as items must often be measured.
G. With all these benefits, it is easy to see that learning handwork is a valuable activity.

6、At a crop breeding (培育) center in Shanghai, researchers have successfully harvested rice that was grown from seeds initially bred on China's space station, Tiangong. The rice plants have completed a full growth cycle on Earth, maturing after more than 100 days since planting.
This space-to-ground experiment began with 6 rice seeds sent into orbit in 2022 on the Wentian spacecraft. Taikonauts onboard Tiangong bred these seeds into 59, which they returned to Earth. Researchers then selected high-quality seeds, growing them under controlled climate conditions and producing around 10,000 new seeds.
Zheng Huiqiong, a lead researcher at the Chinese Academy of Sciences' Center, shared that the team's findings suggest space-bred seeds can reproduce effectively on Earth, suggesting potential for future space agriculture. Zheng highlighted that the space-bred rice possesses unique traits, such as a higher sugar content, with sugar levels estimated to be five to six times higher than standard rice. The space-bred rice also showed a slight increase in protein content. "That means space-bred rice tastes sweeter and has more energy," she added.
Space breeding, the method used in this experiment, exposes seeds to space radiation and microgravity, generating gene mutations (基因突变). These mutations are carefully assessed upon the seeds' return to Earth, sometimes resulting in advantageous traits like shorter growth times, improved disease resistance, and higher output. Zhao Hui, an expert in China Academy of Space Technology, emphasized the safety of space-bred food, explaining that unlike genetically modified crops, space-bred seeds naturally mutate without introducing foreign genes. However, the space-bred rice has fewer leaves, which complicates close planting. Researchers are planning further studies to understand these leaf traits and explore possible genetic changes.
The Tiangong rice experiment marked a milestone for crop science, as it was the first time that rice had completed a full life cycle — from seed germination (发芽) to reproduction — in orbit.
(1)、What can we know about the space-to-ground experiment?A、Seeds grown in orbit promise higher crop quality. B、Seeds bred in space were further grown successfully on Earth. C、New species of seeds grown in space have achieved great success. D、Climate conditions were controlled when seeds were sent into orbit.(2)、What does the underlined words "traits" mean in paragraph 3?A、Materials. B、Arrangements. C、Disadvantages. D、Characteristics.(3)、What does Zhao Hui stress about the space-bred rice?A、Its security. B、Its artificial process. C、Its nutrition. D、Its major shortcoming.(4)、Which of the following is the best title?A、Organic Farming: High-quality Planting in Space B、Space Exploration: A Journey to the Space and Beyond C、New Planting Approach: Replacing the Traditional Farming D、Space-to-ground Cycle: Promising Future Space Agriculture -
7、Expecting pleasure or pain before tasting hot sauce (酱料) appears to influence how the brain responds to the spicy (辣的) flavour. Brain scans of people tasting drops of hot sauce have revealed how positive and negative expectations can influence brain activity patterns for pleasure and pain.
Yi Luo at East China Normal University and her colleagues employed 47 volunteers — roughly half liked spicy foods and half didn't — to receive drops of both mild and strong hot sauce in their mouths while lying inside a brain imaging scanner. Computer controlled the liquids sent out not-so-spicy and very spicy sauce, as well as water to clean their mouths, through a bunch of three really long tubes that went right into the participants' mouths. The researchers conducted one round of experiments without setting expectations. But in the second run, they signaled to participants what intensity hot sauce they would get using different-coloured shapes. An image of two red peppers, for example, signaled the hottest sauce, while one red and one blue pepper signaled the mildest.
The brain scans showed that, for hot haters, the negative expectation of receiving a spicy sample enlarged activity in brain regions that process pain. This provides a "critical warning" for how medical patients' negative expectations could increase pain, says Luana Colloca at the University of Maryland. By comparison, the positive expectation of receiving a spicy treat boosted a pleasure signature in the brain of hot sauce lovers, but only for the mild version. This represents "parallel subjective realities", a theory on how expectations shape subjective experiences and perceptions of reality.
"Future studies could investigate how strongly such brain patterns track subjective experiences of pain or pleasure," says Tor Wager at Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. "The broader implications are beyond spicy food," says Yi Luo. "Understanding how positive and negative expectations influence understanding can inform approaches in medicine. "
(1)、What is the research mainly about?A、How the brain reacts to food. B、How expectations affect feelings. C、How spicy flavour influences the brain. D、How the brain activity patterns are formed.(2)、What can we learn about the experiments in paragraph 2?A、Participants received three tubes of spicy liquid each time. B、The second run was conducted without setting expectations. C、Participants' brain activities were monitored during the trials. D、Different images were used to confuse participants' expectations.(3)、What can be concluded from the result of the experiment?A、Hot haters raise their negative expectations. B、Participants' expectations influence their experiences. C、Hot lovers' expectations have little impact on the result. D、Patients' increasing pain results in their negative expectations.(4)、According to the text, which area will the research probably be applied to?A、Clinical research. B、Psychological test. C、Medical insurance. D、Restaurant industry. -
8、"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference. "
As Robert Frost reminded us, choices are often difficult and will bring both a gain and a loss. Should I spend my Sunday playing golf or taking a day trip to the North Fork with my wife?
If you are a golfer as I am, you will say "Certainly, go playing golf. " Golf is perhaps the greatest challenge to self-improvement. In golf, every swing is counted and can easily be recalled and reviewed by the golfers as they lie in bed that evening, and therefore, self-improvement is pursued.
Now let us return to the question at hand. You will not be surprised to hear that I did in fact go to the North Fork. But, how has that improved me? Can this be quantified (量化)? In golf, whose goal is to complete the game with as few shots as possible, if I average 80 and I shoot a 76, I know that for that day at least I have improved upon my former self and thus feel satisfied.
You may argue that travel is not about self-improvement at all but just about having grand experiences. I beg to differ. It does matter how these things change and improve me. Seeing the folks dancing in the streets should change you. And talking to the manager of the biscuit shop, ought to change you. I think travel does change us, but it's very hard to say just how. How does one quantify buying a peach at a farm? Or how do you quantify the tasty taste of the scones (司康饼) at a stand?
Reviewers have had a hard time analyzing the meaning of Robert Frost's poem. To be honest, I would say all of us have a hard time analyzing our wish to travel to faraway places. I am not sure what the answer is to this tricky question. I may not have made any hole-in-ones on the North Fork but I did enjoy those scones.
(1)、Why does the author quote the poem?A、To express the meaning of life. B、To explain the challenges the poet met. C、To show the impact of choices. D、To introduce the general views to choices.(2)、What does the author think of playing golf?A、Its result is measurable. B、It is the most challenging sports. C、It leads to self-satisfaction. D、It shows the potential for both gain and loss.(3)、What is the author's attitude towards his decision of going to the North Fork?A、Regretful. B、Unclear. C、Content. D、Doubtful.(4)、Which of the following proverb will the author agree with?A、Rome wasn't built in a day. B、Every path has its own scenery. C、Actions speak louder than words. D、You can't judge a book by its cover. -

13、How to Improve Debating Skills
Debating is a subjective judgment, so debaters may apply different methods at different times. . They can help you get your points across clearly and effectively, leaving little room for your opponents to question and inspiring responses and participation of the audience.
Strategic Arguments
Organize your thoughts before you speak. Before you start, think through the chronological order (时间顺序) in which you want to present your statements. Then, start with a powerful statement and support your comments with research and viewpoints from professionals in the field. . So the listeners and opponents will examine what might happen if they choose not to support your arguments.
Focus on ways you might improve your body language. Signs of confidence might include a firm standing posture with few movements. Make eye contact with your opponent when possible, but don't stare him down. Stand straight, so your opponent doesn't think you're bored or lazy. Signs of nonconfidence might include running your hands through your hair, touching your face and staring at your notes without looking up or tapping your pencil on the podium.
Respectful Tones
. Always avoid whispering, complaining and yelling since they inform others you're overwhelmed by emotion and can't present logical arguments. Increase your volume slightly to stress extremely important details. When responding to your opponent's arguments, use a firm, respectful tone.
Opposing Viewpoints
Address your opponent's viewpoints head-on and don't beat around the bush. Prove to the judges and the audience that you are willing to analyze viewpoints from all angles. You might politely mention flaws in your opponent's line of reasoning or address factual errors. You can also agree with part of your opponent's argument. .
On the whole, how to persuade the audience, invoking intelligent responses and enthusiastic participation are debating skills worth mastering.
A. Appropriate Gestures.
B. Confident Body Language.
C. Conclude your argument with convincing details.
D. An effective debate is organized, strategic and persuasive.
E. However, some skills generally apply to all forms of debate.
F. Meanwhile, show ways that the argument doesn't hold up as a whole.
G. Create and maintain a tone that is respectful and easy to listeners' ears.

14、It has always been assumed that noise is a problem unique to animals. But a new study by Dr. Ravandi, a botanist at Shahid Beheshti University in Tehran, has revealed that plants suffer too.
That plants can be affected indirectly by noise pollution has never been in doubt. What has remained unknown is whether or not plants themselves suffer directly from noise pollution.
Sounds are pressure waves transmitted (传播) through gases, liquids and solids. Scientists have previously assumed plants may be able to sense these waves as they are struck by them. A number of experiments have confirmed this in recent years — plants exposed to ultrasound in the lab have shown a range of negative responses including the expression of stress-related genes, slow growth and reduced seed development.
Yet exposing plants to ultrasound is not the same as growing them in the presence of actual traffic noise. To this end, Dr. Ravandi decided to set up an experiment to explore it.
Working with a team, Dr. Ravandi grew two species in his lab that are commonly found in urban environments — marigolds and sage. The plants, grown from seed and allowed to mature for two months in the same space, were divided into two groups. One group was exposed to 73 decibels (分贝) of traffic noise recorded from a busy motorway in Tehran for 16 hours a day. The other group was left to grow in silence. After 15 days had passed, samples were taken from the youngest fully expanded leaves on every plant in the experiment and studied.
None of the plants exposed to the traffic noise did well. Analysis of their leaves revealed all of them were suffering. Chemical compounds (化合物), such as hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and malondialdehyde (MDA) , are indicators of stress in plants and both were found at much higher levels in the plants exposed to the traffic noise. Most notably, malondialdehyde (MDA) levels in the sage plants exposed to noise were double what they were in those grown in silence and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) levels were three times higher in marigolds grown with the noise than those grown in silence.
Dr. Ravandi's findings make it clear that, though plants lack ears, the vibrations (震动) generated by the noise of traffic still bother them enough to give rise to dramatic stress responses that are not much different to those that would be found in plants exposed to drought, highly concentrated salt or heavy metals in their soil.
The question now arises whether all species are affected similarly by noise pollution. Nature is not silent. It remains a mystery if certain plant species have developed mechanisms to address noise pollution, which could potentially be transferred to urban plants in the future.
(1)、What did the new study focus on?A、Plants' exposure to ultrasound. B、Plants' sensitivity to pressure waves. C、The direct impact of noise pollution on plants. D、The seed development of plants grown with noise.(2)、What is Paragraph 5 mainly about?A、The facilities of the experiment. B、The analyses of the experiment. C、The process of the experiment. D、The background of the experiment.(3)、What do we know about the findings?A、Noise pollution had a little impact on plant leaves. B、Noise-exposed plants showed certain levels of stress. C、MDA levels in sage plants grown in silence were higher. D、Traffic noise caused rapid pressure responses in all plants.(4)、Which might be the potential significance of the findings?A、Building barriers to protect plants from traffic pollution. B、Studying the relationship between soil quality and plant health. C、Exploring strategies to preserve plant ecosystems in rural areas. D、Developing noise-resistant plant species for an urban environment. -
15、In many regions of the world, windows can be a mixed blessing. On the one hand, windows brighten a room, and give occupants a view of the world beyond, and on the other band, they also let in a huge amount of heat from the sun.
In fact, 87 percent of heat gain in a given space comes through its windows. This is because UV radiation (紫外辐射) passes through glass easily. To keep out the heat, people use window coverings like blinds, but that also blocks the view.
A recent study from the University of Notre Dame indicates that soon people who love a view-but hate the heat-will be able to have it both ways. Though not yet scaled up (扩大生产) to market, the study presents a new window coating that could let in sunlight and keep out the heat.
Window films and heat-blocking coatings are not a new concept. In fact, the authors of the study themselves pioneered an innovative glass coating in 2020. So what is so exciting about their new 2024 coating? It's all about the angles.
Tengfei Luo, lead author of the study told Notre Dame News, "The angle between the sunshine and your window is always changing. Our coating maintains functionality and efficiency whatever the sun's position in the sky." In order to figure out the way to create a better window coating, the researchers used a quantum (量子) computing assisted AI machine-learning model, which helped to find out the correct combination of elements they would need to create an effective coating.
Using the information, the researchers designed a coating that could selectively transmit and reflect light over a wide range of angles. That is to say, it can keep a room cool at any given hour of the day, regardless of the angle that the sunlight is hitting the window.
There are endless numbers of practical applications for this new window coating, from commercial use to residential use, and even for use in the automotive industry.
(1)、Why are windows referred to as a two-sided coin?A、They are useful but costly. B、They let in light as well as heat. C、They block sunlight and vision. D、They save energy but reduce visibility.(2)、What is special about the 2024 coating?A、Its use of quantum computing technology. B、Its ability to selectively conduct heat. C、Its environment-friendly elements. D、Its angle-insensitive functionality.(3)、What can we learn about the new coating from the text?A、It can keep a room cool at any time. B、It requires people to adjust to the sun's position. C、It works effectively during specific hours of the day. D、It can be created without the help of AL.(4)、What will the text possibly talk about in the following paragraphs?A、The coating's other potential applications. B、The underlying logic of the coating's function. C、The history and development of window coatings. D、Further study to seek new materials for the coating. -
16、On the morning of Dec. 17, 2024, 5-year-old Yueyue stood before 80-year-old Liang Yongbi with a bright smile, extending her hand and saying, "Ms. Liang, come dance with me!"
For Liang, the simple invitation filled her heart with warmth. As they danced together, Liang's joy was palpable, and the loneliness that had often gripped her seemed to melt away in that shared moment of happiness.
This was just one of many touching moments created by the "A Theater for One" volunteer service project, which brings companionship and joy to elderly people through personalized performances.
Since its inception in 2021, the project in Huangjueping, Jiulongpo district, southwest China's Chongqing Municipality, has brought warmth and companionship to countless elderly people through 500 performances, including dances and small shows. Each performance is tailored to the specific tastes of the elderly, creating not just a show, but a heartfelt connection.
The project was initiated by He Mingfeng, a retired community leader who wanted to continue supporting isolated seniors after her retirement in 2020. Starting with a few volunteers, the project has expanded to include children from local schools, adding an extra spark to the shows.
The elderly in the community, many of whom live alone, have been the main beneficiaries of these performances. For 91-year-old Zou Hongzhen, who had lived in the area for over 50 years, the performances were a joyful reminder that she hadn't been forgotten. After losing her spouse and living alone for years, Zou expressed how much she appreciated the warmth brought to her by the volunteers. "I've never been this happy before!" she said.
