More and more young people in big cities are finding comfort in pets.  many choose traditional companions like cats and dogs, or even odd ones such as snakes, the latest trend among South Korea's youth is quite non-traditional: pet rock. 

This strange choice is gaining attraction on social media, users show their rocks wearing mini hats and sunglasses, or even resting in tiny beds with face masks. Even South Korean famous people are accepting the trend, (share) their own pet rocks with fans on social media. 

The pet rock, which first gained (popular) in the 1970s in the US, (make) a comeback in South Korean recently. However, this time around, it's less about uniqueness but more about providing a sense of (calm) to the youth. 

 traditional pets such as cats or dogs, pet rocks require little care, making them particularly (appeal) to those seeking companionship. 

"I'd occasionally complain to my rock about a tiresome day I had at work," Lee So-hee told us. Lee is a 30-year-old woman who lived alone in Seoul until November 2023, when a friend gave her a pet rock as a gift, which she affectionately refers to as a girl named "Hongduggage". "It's kind of like talking to your dog, and it can make you feel (relax) in some ways," she said. 

"I don't believe it. They are actually taking it down!" "We really do make a 1 !" The huge Joe Camel billboard (广告牌), 2 directly in sight of our school, is being torn down—and we made it!

Have you ever raised your hand simply to be part of something and then have it 3 into a life-changing event? That's exactly what happened to Eddie and me. We 4 to a school club which 5 smoking-free friendships and activities. During one of our club meetings, Eddie said, "It really makes me 6 that wherever I go on this campus, I can see the Joe Camel billboard. The 7 is loud and clear: Start smoking and you will be cool and popular."

During the time we were actively 14 with this, my grandfather—a smoker who started in his teens—died of lung cancer. Maybe there was a higher power calling me to raise my hand to write the article that day. I believe if we keep people from 15 smoking, that's one family that won't have to watch a loved one die from it. That's a big deal!

Social Media Tells Lies

Social media does have its shortcomings, and one of those is that it can often seem like everybody is living and winning big—except you. 

You are constantly bombarded (轰炸) with images of people you don't even know.  However, the reality is that these people also go through struggles. Nobody's life is perfect all the time. Everyone experiences life's hardships, failures, disappointment, heartbreaks and pain. 

Social media only shows half of what is real. Things aren't always what they appear to be.  But they often exist in the real-life messy moments—those ones that don't get shot or documented. 

As you interact with people through the tiny screen of your mobile phone, try to take a closer look before you make up your mind that they are better than you. Everyone has their battles. Don't get caught up in the lives of other people, and don't count their blessings. 

Don't let social media fool you.  In reality, there are people with only 10 likes who have plenty of friends, and people with 1000 likes who are rather lonely, and have no real friends. Someone could have a million views on their videos and still live in poverty. 

 It takes hard work, really hard work. The real winners in life are those who work behind the scenes but make the most happen, not the ones who show off their lifestyle to impress others.

Some of the 17 million Americans suffering from major depressive disorder may soon receive a surprising new suggestion from their doctors: Have fun on a virtual reality (VR) device. 

"Depression impacts so many people right now, and we thought VR could have a large impact," said Bullock, founder of Stanford's Neurobehavioral Clinic and Virtual Reality program. "There can be significant barriers to behavioral activation (行为激活) in some patients—they might be stuck in a hospital bed, or have no means to involve themselves in enjoyable activities like getting outside, exercising and volunteering. We started wondering whether simulated (模拟的) pleasant activities could be a good first step for them. "

The study by Bullock's team, published in JMIR Mental Health, followed 26 people with major depressive disorder. Half were told to plan and take part in real life activities like going on outings in their community or socializing with friends. The other half used a virtual reality headset to participate in activities ranging from table tennis to touring foreign cities or attending shows. After four weeks, people in both groups saw a decrease in their symptoms of depression and their depression rating by similar amounts. 

"People who might otherwise have barriers to getting treatment might be open to using this technology in their own homes," said Margot Paul, a professor of mental and behavioral sciences. 

Bullock believes the cost and ease of many VR platforms—especially those that have mobile phones put into cheap cardboard headsets—make it an easy treatment to promote. 

The team says larger and longer-term studies are needed to find the best ways to practice virtual behavioral activation, as well as which patient populations might be best targeted with the VR treatment. They also think more efforts are needed to inform doctors about how to practice VR behavioral activation appropriately. 

We have all heard how plastic pollution has overflowed every corner of the world. Recently, scientists have made a surprising discovery that microplastics are even found in the human bloodstream. 

After analyzing blood samples (样本) from 22 healthy people, researchers found microplastics in 17 of them! Most of the microplastics were classified as polyethylene terephthalate (PET), which is commonly found in drink bottles, and there were small amounts of polyethylene, which makes up plastic bags. 

Although the exact chemical effects of microplastics on our bodies are unknown, it is clear that the increasing amounts of plastic in our environment could bring a risk to human cells in the future. 

Microplastics were never considered a significant threat to the atmosphere until recent studies began to reveal that they could be found everywhere across the skies. For example, scientists recently discovered the presence of microplastics in the Pyrenees Mountain Range in Europe, believed to have arrived by rain or snow. 

The low mass of microplastics makes them spread through air, which is why they can travel hundreds, even thousands, of miles from their source. They are also likely to spread through wastewater, oceans, and even soil. 

Microplastics that are being blown and swept into the air have the potential to affect air quality and cloud formation. In fact, massive microplastics in the air could form such a kind of clouds that tend to stick around longer than naturally forming clouds. 

With microplastics accumulating in the air we breathe, there is also an increasing concern that they may affect human lungs. The new study will allow scientists to better understand the impacts on human health and is a reminder of the need to find other replacements for plastic. 

On May 7^th, 1902, on the island of Martinique, Ludgar Sylbaris, the town's drunk and troublemaker, got thrown into prison. However, it turned out to be the luckiest day of his life. 

Saint Pierre on Martinique was at the time known as the Paris of Caribbean. It had a big population of 30, 000 people and was a cultural centre. Martinique is home to Mount Pelee, one of the most active volcanoes in the world. 

In the weeks before Ludgar Sylbaris was thrown into prison, the volcano on the island of Martinique was showing signs of volcanic activity. Without modern Volcanology, people still sensed that something was going to happen, but they didn't have a really good sense of how big or how dangerous the threat was. Thousands of people left the countryside and came to the city of Saint Pierre because they thought it would be safer there. That was a terrible mistake. 

The day after Ludgar Sylbaris went into that prison cell, Mount Pelee exploded. And in an instant 3, 000 people were killed. A pressure wave flattened every single building. Anyone who was unlucky enough to be outside was instantly burned to death. Those who were in shelter found themselves choking as their lungs were burned from the inside out. There was really no escape except for one person, Ludgar Sylbaris. 

The cell he was in had been built as an armory (军械库) . So it had been built within the thick walls and it happened that the only opening in it faced away from the eruption. Even so, super-hot air began to force its way underneath the door. And as his cell heated to extremely high temperatures, he was forced to take off his clothes, push them underneath the door and he peed (小便) on the clothes just to try to keep the hot air from entering. He was still badly burned and wasn't found until four days later when rescuers heard his cries.
