1、When I worked on the manufacturing shop(车间)floor, we rarely saw plant managers. Except for one. He often walked through the plant. He checked out product quality. He stopped for a brief word—usually no more than a "hello." He wasn't outgoing. He didn't display any of the qualities typically associated with a "leader." Yet we liked him.
In a 1992 University of Pittsburgh study, researchers had four women attend a number of different classes. Their attendance varied: one woman might attend every class; a different woman might attend only a few. What didn't vary was their behavior. None of the women spoke in class or spoke to other students.
At the end of the term, students were asked which woman they liked best. Who "won"? Women who attended the highest number of classes. According to the researchers, "Mere exposure had weak effects on familiarity, but strong effects on attraction and similarity." Or in non-researcher-speak: If I see you frequently, I naturally like you more. That's the power of showing up.
Knowing someone will show up in the future also matters. In a 1967 University of Minnesota study, researchers gave study participants profiles of two people and told them that one would be a partner in future discussion groups. When asked, the participants said they liked their future partner more. Even though the profiles were almost identical.
Want your team or your customers to like you more? Show up. Drop in. Drop by. Send a brief note. Make a quick phone call. You don't have to say or do much. Then, be consistent in your behavior. In time, people will expect you to drop in or drop by, whether in person or virtually. Anticipating future contact will make them like you more.
(1)、What does the first paragraph serve as?A、An introduction. B、A background. C、A comment. D、An explanation.(2)、According to the 1992 study, what helps make a student welcome?A、Answering questions frequently. B、Greeting others enthusiastically. C、Behaving more like others. D、Attending classes more often.(3)、What did the University of Minnesota study find?A、Familiarity contributes to likability. B、Identical behaviours enhance likability. C、Future partnership increases likability. D、Virtual contacts benefit likability.(4)、What is the text mainly about?A、Power of likability. B、Research on likability. C、Definition of likability. D、Application of likability. -
2、When Shakespeare called sleep "nature's soft nurse", he was certainly onto something. Centuries later, researchers have' found that inadequate sleep in children affects their emotional functioning in ways that may predict longer- term social problems. A new study, conducted by a professor of psychology, Candice Alfano, examined whether changes in children's facial expressions of emotion after sleep restriction (限制) predict social problems concurrently (同时发生) and/or over time.
"Sleep problems in children are routinely linked with lower social competence and more problems in peer (同龄) relationships, but we really don't understand what drives these associations," reports Alfano, assuming that the answers might partly lie in the ways children's faces express emotions when tired.
To test this theory, Alfano and colleagues examined 37 children between the ages of 7 and 11 during two in-lab emotional assessments: one when children were well-rested and the other after two nights of partial sleep restriction. During these assessments, children viewed positive(think kittens and ice cream) and negative (think getting a shot and fierce dogs) pictures on a computer screen while a camera recorded their facial expressions. Participants' parents provided reports of their child's social functioning at that time and approximately two years later.
"As we suspected, children who displayed less positive facial expressions in response to pleasant images when sleep was restricted were reported to have more social problems two years later, even when controlling for earlier social problems." said Alfano.
Although concurrent relationships between sleep-based changes in facial expressions and social problems were not found, Alfano suggests that this may be due to developmental differences in social behavior and peer relationships.
"For younger children, more clearly-shown behaviors such as sharing and taking turns may be more important for friendships than facial expressions. However, emotional expression becomes more important with age, explains Alfano.
The results indicate poor sleep quality in childhood forecasts later socio-emotional problems and also indicate the importance of studies exploring how sleep affects many aspects of children's mental health and well-being.
(1)、Why is Shakespeare's comparison used?A、To compare different attitudes towards sleep. B、To show good sleep is essential to our health. C、To indicate man's energy is closely related to sleep. D、To create the connection between art and research .(2)、What was the research mainly targeted at?A、Sleeping amount. B、Children's health. C、Facial expressions. D、Emotional problems.(3)、What role did the parents play in the study?A、Research testers. B、Media reporters. C、Data collectors. D、Experiment organizers.(4)、What can we infer from Alfano?A、Overtired children's expressions can tell their present social problems. B、More factors influence children's concurrent social functioning. C、Good sleep is sure to guarantee a good peer relationship. D、Age will help reduce emotional problems. -

14、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Maggie was an average teenager who often felt invisible among her peers (同龄人). She felt like she was an outsider. School, in particular, was a source of anxiety for her.
When she was depressed, she would hide in her small garden. But the plants there never seemed to thrive (繁茂). It was always a disappointment, and she felt discouraged. "I am just a loser," she thought to herself.
One day, while visiting a gardening website, Maggie discovered an exciting smart device called "GreenThumb." It claimed to help even the most inexperienced gardeners grow amazing plants. Interested, she decided to give it a try.
As soon as Maggie received the GreenThumb device and unboxed it, she carefully followed the set up steps, and within minutes, GreenThumb was activated and began to scan (扫描) the garden. Imagine having a cool device that tells you exactly what the plants need — like a personal plant caretaker! It reminds you to water, gives you tips on when to feed your plants, and even warns you about diseases. GreenThumb was just like a friend who always cared and helped.
During a lunch break at school, some classmates began discussing the latest events that had happened. Maggie wanted to share GreenThumb with others, too. But her voice was soon drowned out by louder voices. The conversation soon shifted to music, with each person talking about their favorite song or artist. Maybe they didn't hear her. Or they were just uninterested. She sank into silence, feeling unseen and unheard again. "I'll show you what I can do with GreenThumb," she said to herself with determination.
Every day after school, Maggie couldn't wait to take care of her garden. She spent countless hours in her garden tending to each plant. At first, she strictly followed GreenThumb's instructions. As time went by, she found her own talent in gardening and added some creative ideas to make her garden unique.

In Caoxian county, Shandong, hanfu workshops are innovating traditional designs. Li Zhen, entrepreneur, explained that while classic hanfu's length made summer sales slow, (shorten) styles like half-skirts now meet warm-weather demand. "We refined designs through online consultations," she added.
As an e-commerce and hanfu center, Caoxian is transforming summer a peak season. At Youai Yuncang hanfu center, a nameless dress sold out (instant). "Its lightweight, fold-free design suits all ages for daily wear," said Li Zhen. As one of the Hanfu (enthusiast), she praised summer-friendly horse-faced skirts: "They're stylish and breathable."
The neo-Chinese style, combining historical elements with modern fashion, (fascinate) youth in recent years. During graduation season, Li Zhen cooperated with universities to integrate hanfu patterns into academic uniforms. " (wear) these clothes at cultural sites makes me feel part of a classical painting," shared a Shanghai visitor.
This trend (drive) by Post-00s designers. Zhang Zichen, a fashion graduate, joined the industry after a hanfu experience last October. "The summer sales proves our work," she noted. Caoxian now hosts 1,200 of China's top 2,000 online hanfu stores, employing 100,000 locals.
The county's 5-kilometer production chain — from dyeing to sewing — supports a complete (industry) chain. Kong Fanxing, Caoxian's culture director, believes youth-led creativity will sustain hanfu's growth through cultural-commercial cooperation, not only revives (复兴) our ancient art and culture home and abroad but strengthens our sense of identity.

18、"Growing fruit trees is a very simple way to stay in love with our world," says Vivian Keh, drama writer and daughter of immigrants. She holds a basket of persimmons (柿子) she planted to feel connected to her Korean ancestors. Keh is just one of the 50remarkable subjects in nature writer Amy Stewart's The Tree Collectors: Tales of Arboreal Obsession, a book of people transformed by their love of trees.
Initially, Stewart thought collecting trees was strange. Later, curious about these tree lovers, she discovered educators, protectors and forward-thinkers, all drawn to a kind of collection, motivated by different reasons for planting trees. They plant trees in all kinds of places, big and small, public and private, nurturing (培育) their trees to honor beloved dead, attract wildlife, preserve rare species, connect to history, invest in the future, grow food and create beauty.
Steward categorizes these tree collectors according to their sense of purpose. Kenneth Hoegh, one of the book's "ecologists" tests which cold-loving species might grow in a warming and historically treeless Greenland. "Healer" Joe Hamilton plants loblolly pines on land he got from his enslaved ancestors, intending to create a sustainable forest that will provide long-term wealth for his family. Reagan Wytsalucy wants to rebuild traditional peach gardens on Navajo land. She's part of a group called "community builders" who work to bring people together.
Stewart's watercolor illustrations make the book even more charming — She pictures the people in her stories and also captures the beauty of the trees, like the unique eucalyptus seeds and delicate camellia flowers.
After spending time in this varied community, you'll undoubtedly experience a strong desire to rest under the shade of a leafy tree. But there's more to it: the book gives people a chance to share what they love. "How often do any of us get a chance to pour our hearts out to a stranger?" she writes. "Somehow, talking about trees made it possible."
(1)、What makes Stewart change her attitude towards tree collectors?A、Protection of wildlife. B、Fear of losing tree species. C、Exploration of their motivations. D、Honor of their beloved dead.(2)、What is the main purpose of Reagan Wytsalucy's tree planting project?A、To develop rare tree species. B、To strengthen people's social bonds. C、To test new farming techniques. D、To create a lasting financial source.(3)、What does the quote in the last paragraph suggest about discussing trees?A、It inspires new ideas. B、It allows deep emotional sharing. C、It rarely happens in public. D、It helps resolve environmental issues.(4)、What does the writer think of the book?A、Inspiring. B、Conventional. C、Complicated. D、Abstract. -

Steve adjusted the strap of his baseball glove as he dashed through the kitchen. "Mom, I'm going to Paul's!" he announced, nearly knocking into the refrigerator. The screen door slammed behind him, creating an echo in the hot summer air.
This summer meant more than lazy days — their middle school coach had warned that making the freshman team required intense practice. That was why they would meet other boys on the field this afternoon.
Paul was waiting outside for Steve. "What are you doing? Where's your stuff?" Steve lifted his bat onto his shoulder.
Paul pointed at Thompson's house across the street. "I have to clean Mr. Thompson's garage before I can go. With his broken arm, he can't do it himself. My mom always volunteers me to help him. He's kind of old."
"Okay," said Steve. "I'll help you. We'll get done quicker working together."
The garage smelled of motor oil and aged wood. Sunlight filtered through dusty windows as they sorted gardening tools and moved paint cans. As Paul put a big box on a shelf, it fell off and with it fell an envelope, its contents spilling across the concrete floor like autumn leaves. Paul bent down, breath catching as he recognized Benjamin Franklin's strict face repeated on dozens of hundred-dollar bills.
"You've got to see this." He pulled out a handful of bills and showed Steve.
"Whoa," said Steve. "Where did you get this?"
Paul pointed to the shelf. "It just fell down when the box fell. There's got to be a couple of thousand dollars here." Paul looked past Steve to the garage door opening. Mr. Thompson was struggling to water his roses one-handed. "The coast is clear. If we take some, I bet no one will ever know."
Steve furrowed his brow and shook his head. "Are you crazy? That's stealing."
"Well, I do a lot of chores for him and don't get paid. It's not really stealing; it's kind of payment for my hard work."
