2、Many people agree that pets are family. It's because they1 pets like human family members. Unfortunately, so many animals have much2 lives than us. And it seems like we can never get3 days together.
Julia Earheart knows4 how strong the love for a pet and the pet5 to its owners can be because she has her own pets. Based in Michigan, Julia works as an independent photographer with plenty of6 customers. But it's her non-paying customers that get the most out of the sessions.
When elderly and sick pets7 their final months with their humans, Julia offers to take pet photos for8. She photographs these owners and their pets so even when the pet dies, its owner can enjoy every last moment together.
And these pictures couldn't be more beautiful but heartbreaking at the same time. "The shoots can be emotional and difficult, absolutely," Julia said. "But when you look at the pictures, you can see that9 is possible even when there isn't much10 left."
Julia wants the owners to be able to spend the money on vet bills and toys11a photography session. Thanks to her, some lucky owners can12 the final days with their companions so the owners couldn't be more13.

3、How to Speak in Public
Many people have a fear of public speaking. They worry that they will lose their words, bore the audience or somehow make a fool of themselves. It is easy to try to avoid public speaking, but that usually doesn't work out. Everyone has to speak publicly at some point in their life. You may give a speech in a class or a meeting. Maybe you'll have to give a speech for some honor you've received.
Relax. Your audience don't expect you to be perfect. They want you to succeed just as much as you do. If you're thinking you'll forget everything, remind yourself that you are prepared and knowledgeable. Imagine yourself doing well.
Be yourself. You are not Jack Canfield or Tony Robbins. Share your true personality with your audience, and they'll find you reliable.
Know your topic. Try to speak about the subject you know well. Research the topic to make sure that you are correct. Public speaking is easier when you don't feel like a fraud(骗子).
Choose your message for the group you are speaking to carefully. If you' re giving a public speech, then rude jokes certainly won't be suitable.
Give value. Base your speech on 2 or 3 main points. They'll be satisfied if they leave with something they can use, and that is what public speaking is all about.
A. Know your audience.
B. Choose some serious messages.
C. Don't force yourself to be perfect.
D. Don't focus your attention on too many points.
E. Pretend to be someone that you're not, and they'll discover it.
F. Your audience will not remember every little detail you tell them.
G. Follow these steps to satisfy your audience and overcome your fear of speaking publicly.

4、Cars could soon be communicating with each other using 5G to make drivers aware of upcoming hazards (危险), scientists say. The extremely fast mobile internet would allow for rapid information transmission and could make drivers aware of black ice, pot holes or other dangers up ahead.
Several car manufacturers (制造商) are already using 5G in their vehicles, including as a tool to help serve in the generation of self-driving vehicles.
Experts at Glasgow Caledonian University (GCU) believe the high-speed connection will also improve the reliability and capability of automated vehicles to the point where they will be safer than the manual cars being driven today. They predict the number of road traffic accidents, which according to the World Health Organization account for more than 1.3 million deaths and up to 50 million people injured worldwide every year, will drop really as a result.
Dr Dimitrios Liarokapis, a member of the research group, said, "To have a better idea of what the future will look like, think of having such cars that not only use sensors to scan what's around them, they can also talk to each other and exchange safety-related information about their surroundings over an area that covers several square miles. With the help of 5G, a vehicle-generated early warning system that reminds drivers is possible within the next few years. Cars that are close enough to the danger area will transmit warning messages to other cars around them using short-range communication technologies, but also to cars further away using 5G, fast and reliably."
A few manufacturers are already working on connected cars. Of them, Ford told its intention to fit 80 percent of its future vehicles with technology that warns drivers about upcoming road accidents, bad weather and traffic jams.
(1)、What is the benefit of 5G mentioned in the text?A、It can improve the safety of automated vehicles. B、It can help drivers communicate with each other. C、It can effectively wipe out road traffic accidents. D、It can help make more profits for the manufacturers.(2)、What can we know about the vehicle-generated early warning system?A、It can get information several miles ahead. B、It is under research and development at present. C、It has been proved extremely helpful for driving. D、It will send messages to drivers a few days earlier.(3)、What will be probably continued with the text?A、Some car manufacturers. B、The advantages when using 5G. C、Some safety rules when using 5G. D、The sales information of cars with 5G.(4)、Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?A、5G Leaves Drivers Free When They Are Driving B、5G Is to Bring Great Convenience to Our Daily Life C、5G Has Been Popular with Drivers Around the World D、5G Is on the Way to Making "Dialogue" Between Cars -
5、The process of aging is of particular concern for Americans. This concern is not only related to the likelihood of increasing your chances of coming down with diseases such as heart disease and diabetes(糖尿病), but more importantly, to the loss of your eyesight. As we age the chance that we will develop age-related vision conditions and disorders increases.
Therefore, many people believe that it's very hard, if not impossible, to improve your vision naturally as you get older due to concerns that the visual system begins to deteriorate at that stage of life. These people also believe they're stuck with their glasses or contacts for life. So the question is: can aging prevent you from improving your vision naturally?
The answer to that question is no. While aging is inevitable(无法避免的),when it comes to improving, protecting and preserving your precious eyesight, there are things you can do to reduce or slow the negative effects of aging on the visual system. For instance, you can take preventive steps in terms of nutrition and eye exercises that can reduce the negative effects of aging on the eyes.
These simple-and-easy-to-perform techniques make the visual system stronger therefore helping you to improve your vision. They also improve the focusing power of the eyes through vision training eye exercise techniques. Additionally, eye exercises can improve blood flow and circulation to the visual system therefore improving your eyesight. The question is: can these eye exercises help improve vision even in older people? Well, the answer to this question is yes.
According to a scientific research study performed by the National Institute on Aging, elderly adults can quickly improve their vision with a branch of eye exercises called Perceptual Training. Perceptual Training relates to the ability to improve various visual skills by exposing a person repeatedly to activities involving all kinds of stimuli(刺激物). This improves the way the brain processes visual information by strengthening the connection between the brain and eyes.
(1)、What can be inferred from the first paragraph?A、Aging can cause various vision diseases. B、The elders tend to do little to protect their eyes. C、Aging population is a serious problem in the US. D、Heart disease is the main cause of old people's death.(2)、What is the misunderstanding about eyesight according to the text?A、The elders' eyesight can actually return to normal. B、Wearing glasses is a good way to improve eyesight. C、The elders' eyesight is difficult to improve naturally. D、Preventive measures can reduce the risk of developing eyesight problems.(3)、What does the underlined word "deteriorate" in paragraph 2 mean?A、Become worse. B、Become stronger. C、Become simpler. D、Become more sensitive.(4)、What does the study tell us in the last paragraph?A、How old people should do eye exercises. B、How the brain processes visual information. C、The vision problem is given great attention. D、Eye exercises can improve vision in elderly adults. -
6、John and Mary had a nice home and two lovely children. John had just been asked to go on a business trip to another city for several days and Mary would go with him too. They hired a reliable woman to care for their children and returned home a little earlier than they had planned.
As they drove into their hometown, they found a home on fire. After having a look, Mary said, "Oh well, it isn't our fire. Let's go home." But John drove closer and said, "That home belongs to Fred Jones who wouldn't be off work yet. Maybe there is something we could do."
John noticed an old lady screamed to him, "The children! Get the children!" John grabbed her by the shoulder saying, "Get a hold of yourself and tell us where the children are!" "In the basement," cried the lady.
In spite of Mary's disagreement, John soaked (浸湿) his clothes and ran to the basement which was full of smoke. He found the door and grabbed two children. As he left he could hear some more cries. He sent the two badly frightened children into the waiting room and asked how many more children were down there. They told him two more and Mary grabbed his arm and screamed, "John! Don't go back! It's dangerous! That house will fall down in any second!"
But he shook her off and went back. It seemed a very long time before he found both children and started back. As he climbed up the endless steps the thought went through his mind that there was something strangely familiar about the little bodies next to him, and at last when they came out into the sunlight and fresh air, he found that he had just rescued his own children. The baby-sitter had left them at this home while she did some shopping.

8、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
In the spring sun, my aunt and I headed for her flower shop. Normally I would be delighted to help in her shop, but not recently because of Rosa. Rosa was my sister, just one month old, who was settled in my old bedroom. For ten years, the small room was full of my toys and books. But now it was transformed into her baby room, decorated like a garden with pinks and yellows. My space, my old life, was gone.
"Here we are!" We arrived at the shop, a wave of colour and sweet smell washing over me. My aunt said I could pick some flowers for Mum and Dad. I used to love this, but today I was so overcome with tiredness and envy. Why bother to bring them flowers when they were enjoying Rosa at home without me?
Silently I helped my aunt arrange flowers. "Your mum told me there hasn't been much shut eye recently for any of you." "Not much, since Rosa the alarm clock was installed (安装)." I complained with a huge yawn (哈欠).
"I remember having to creep (蹑手蹑脚地走) around like a worn-out mouse when your mum was a baby. I spent the first months hating her so much." "But you and Mum seem so close," I said, guiltily hiding away my envy of Rosa.
"Now we are. But it took me years to grow into the role of big sister. Few flowers blossom (绽放) overnight, you know." She pulled me in for aside hug, glancing up at the clock, and suggested I take a walk outside.
Behind her shop was a field dotted with spring flowers. Stepping into the field, I began to pick little flowers. It was like gathering my childhood memories. I remembered how I'd sit with Dad, making flower chains, crowning (授予) each other with the silliest titles: Queen of Junk Food and King of Mess. My smile grew wider. The shining yellow flowers reminded me of the color in Rosa's baby room. Was she awake? I wondered.

11、For as long as I can remember, I've been part of a team of some sort of extracurricular (课外的) sport. I started swimming at a young age and then I was 1 to water polo (水球).
Water polo is a 2 sport. We grow together, we hang out together, and we succeed together. 3 in this sport depends on the successes of each other rather than the success of the 4. This is important because we all realize that 5 we can grow fast alone, we grow more and get closer to our goals 6.
I was never good when I first started a sport. To be honest, it was 7 when I first started playing water polo. My coach has always 8 me. She once said that we're never going to be 9 at first and that's okay because we can always get better. And get better? I did. No matter how 10 I got I noticed that there was always somewhere I was lacking and somewhere I could 11.
Being an athlete is 12. You have to wake up early every day. You have to 13 yourself every day. You have to balance your life outside of sport. But for me, 14 is never an option. I knew that simply throwing in the towel would cause me to be filled with great regret. So don't let hard work 15 your desire to become someone greater than you are today.

12、The classroom environment offers many ways to include fun and laughter into a potentially dull routine, and effective educators make the most of these opportunities..
Lighten up the atmosphere
Humour can be used to enrich literacy skills, spark creativity, teach critical analysis or just lighten the mood in the classroom.. Make fun of yourself and your mistakes. This can make students smile and has the added benefit of showing students that teachers are human.Use current music and sports subjects in teaching examples to engage students and introduce a fun cultural reference into the usually somber atmosphere of school.
Use humour in the media
. Take advantage of political cartoons to analyse historical events or trends and begin a debate. Humorous authors and reporters in the media can be used as models for writing jobs or oral presentations.
Children can fill in the words the cartoon characters might say, and then transfer those actual words into a story using quotation marks. Comics also can be used to teach literary devices such as puns, metaphors and symbolism. Children can create their own comics combining imagery from word pairs, a cartoon mouse using a computer mouse, for instance.
The learning benefits of humour
. Humour is found to be an important entryway into improving social connections with others. Brains might be able to be trained to interpret a difficult situation in a humorous way in order to help the body cope with stressful circumstances.
A. Keep a cartoon and joke file
B. Young students laugh in a classroom
C. Include happy remarks throughout lessons
D. Find humour from the behaviour of students
E. Humour is a kind of daily show for teachers
F. Humour can improve learning and strengthen memories
G. Newspapers provide points for issues on current events

13、In the U. S., people eat more protein than they need to, which might not be bad for human health, but does pose a problem for the country's waterways. The nation's wastewater is loaded with the leftovers from protein digestion: nitrogen compounds(氯化合物) that can feed harmful algal blooms(藻华) and pollute the air and drinking water.
Maya Almaraz, a biogeochemist at the University of California, Davis, and her team wanted to see how much of this nitrogen entered into the U. S. wastewater system because of a protein-heavy diet. The researchers found that the majority of nitrogen pollution present in wastewater—some 67 to 100 precent—is a by-product of water people consume.
Once it enters the environment, the nitrogen can have a series of ecological impacts. It helps algae grow much faster than they would normally, which is harmful to humans, other animals and plants. And when the algae eventually die, the problem is not over. Microorganisms(微生物) that feed on dead algae use up the oxygen in the water, leading to "dead zones," where many species simply cannot survive, in rivers, lakes and oceans.
Although it is possible to treat algal blooms, many of the current methods are not always effective at getting rid of all of the harmful growth. Some of these methods can even lead to additional pollution. So the best strategy for dealing with the effects of nitrogen pollution is prevention, says Patricia Glibert, an ocean scientist at the University of Maryland. Almaraz and her team suggest that controlling nitrogen pollution could be approached more quickly with a change in eating habits that could save billions of dollars in the long term.
(1)、Which aspect of Americans' diet does Almaraz's research focus on ?A、Its variety. B、Its effect. C、Its make-up. D、Its amount.(2)、What causes "dead zones" in the water?A、No oxygen for many species. B、Death of lots of healthy algae. C、Microorganisms'overconsumption of nutrients. D、Poisonous chemicals released by harmful algae.(3)、What is the problem with current algal bloom treatment methods?A、They are costly. B、They may kill all algae. C、They are slow to take effect. D、They may cause secondary pollution.(4)、What does the text mainly tell us?A、It is high time to treat wild algae growth. B、Eating too much protein harms the planet. C、Prevention is better than cure in treating air pollution. D、Researchers find solutions to the wastewater problem. -
14、Every 40 seconds, someone in the US has a heart attack. Of course, this statistic applies only to humans. But what about other animal — do they also experience this condition?
A heart attack occurs when a blood vessel (血管) distributing oxygenated blood to the heart gets blocked and a piece of heart tissue dies from the deprivation of oxygen, according to Flavio Fenton, a professor of physics who studies both human and other animal species' hearts. "Since animals' hearts are very similar," Fenton said, "most animals hearts, in principle, could have heart attacks."
But that's not what happened. For instance, heart attacks occur very rarely in dogs. Even the chimps, which are not only closely related to humans but also share similar risk factors for heart disease, do not have heart attacks. Even in mice and rabbits that are genetically modified to have high cholesterol (胆固醇) and blood fats for the purpose of inducing atherosclerosis and other human diseases, actual heart attacks rarely occur, according to a 2009 paper.
Despite previous reports that other animals mostly don't have heart attacks, the truth is that there haven't been a lot of experiments investigating this question. "You can observe that an animal has suddenly died, but very rarely would you actually look for the cause of it. We just don't know whether they suffer heart attacks," said Tomasz Owerkowicz, a physiologist at California State University.
But based on heart structures, researchers can make predictions about which creatures are most likely to have heart attacks. Owerkowicz and Fenton are doing such experiments on alligators (短吻鳄). "In their heart, you find the vessels; and they have spongy (海绵状的) tissues, around which there's a lot of blood, not necessarily coming from the vessels," Fenton said.
According to the researchers' experiments so far, alligators don't have heart attacks. The alligator's heart tissue had no signs of cell death, Fenton added.
(1)、What does the underlined word "deprivation" in Paragraph 2 probably mean?A、Consumption. B、Encounter. C、Lack. D、Production.(2)、What do the animals mentioned in Paragraph 3 have in common?A、They have high cholesterol. B、They hardly suffer heart attacks. C、They are easily genetically modified. D、They share similar risk factors for heart disease with humans.(3)、What's Tomasz Owerkowicz's attitude to previous reports?A、Indifferent. B、Supportive. C、Doubtful. D、Hopeful.(4)、Why do alligators have no heart attacks?A、Their blood vessels are quite strong. B、The cells in their heart are in large numbers. C、Their heart can beat faster than most animals'. D、The blood in their heart has multiple sources. -

17、Language Learner Habits to Avoid
Successful language learners do the kind of things the unsuccessful ones don't and avoid the ones that unsuccessful ones do! This article is about language learning habits that successful learners avoid.
Always being distracted. Being distracted by noises, people walking past or your own thoughts will take you away from being present. Presence is of fundamental importance in learning. Study can't make up for a lack of presence — nothing can.
Only talking the talk. There is little point in making plans or talking about what you are going to do if you do not follow through. You need to walk the talk. If you are only talking the talk, maybe it has to do with one of the other habits mentioned below!
We can all get lazy if we are doing things that are not inspiring us. Who gets lazy when they are courting a partner? Who gets lazy with things they love doing? Laziness is a sign that something has to change. Forcing yourself to persist will only last for so long, before it gives way to more laziness.
Giving up. "The most certain way to succeed," Thomas Edison once said, "is always to try just one more time." And often, it comes after first failing time and time again.
If you are doing any of these, my suggestion is to look more carefully and see if you can move away from these practices.
A. Giving in to laziness.
B. Learning to get rid of laziness.
C. In a sense, we do learn by trial and error.
D. Once you do, you will be heading in a better direction.
E. Success, however you define it, never comes from not trying.
F. Action is what will produce results, not just words or thoughts.
G. Without that, you cannot notice the things that can help you to improve.

18、His father said, "All set, boy?" and Jeremy nodded, picking up his gun with awkward gloved hands. His father pushed open the door and they went out into the freezing dawn together. Ordinarily Jeremy would take out his camera to record the scenery, but not this morning. This was the morning, particularly sacred, when 14-year-old Jeremy would go duck hunting for the first time.
However, he hated it, and had hated the whole idea since his father bought him a gun. But he was determined to go through with it. He loved his father, and wanted his approval more than anything in the world.
They came to a narrow and hidden place facing the bay. Jeremy sat down nervously and waited. To reduce fear, he took a picture of his father against the clean water. Then he put the camera hurriedly on the grass and picked up his gun.
Jeremy got his gun ready. "I'll let you shoot first," his father said, loading his own gun. "You know, I've been waiting for a long time for this day. Just the two of us..."He broke off, bending forward, eyes narrowed. "There's a small flight heading this way now. Keep your head down. I'll give you the word."
The sun came out. Jeremy could see everything clearly: his father's face, tense and eager; the white frost on the gun. His heart was beating wildly. He prayed, "Don't let them come, please!"
But they kept coming. "Four black," his father said. "One mallard." High above, Jeremy heard the pulsing whistle of wings as the flight began to circle. The mallard was leading, his feet dropping down, reaching for the silver-colored water. Closer, closer... "Get set," his father whispered.
"Now!" cried Jeremy's father. "Take them!"
Jeremy felt his body obey. He stood up, holding the gun. In the same instant, the wild ducks saw the gunners and flew. "Shoot!" said something sharply in Jeremy's brain. But up went the mallard higher still, until suddenly he caught the full force of the wind and flew away, out of range.
