Be a true runner

For me, it was normal to feel lost at the inter-camp track. Four camps of kids were ready to lead their teams to a blue ribbon and win the day. Not me. I was too little to be the leader and too skinny to be an athlete. I knew this by the time I was twelve, because my camp counselors（辅导员）and the other kids reminded me of it every chance they got. So when our camp needed a fourth runner in the two-mile race around the lake, I knew I was no one's first choice.

I hid in the shade of a maple tree as they called the names of the runners, my body tensed as I heard a counselor call, "Fred! Where is Fred! He is in this race!" It was Barry. He spotted me under the tree. "Fred! We need a 12-year-old who hasn't been in other events to run the two-mile!"

He gave me a push towards the starting line. Having no confidence and trying to save myself from the shame of taking the last place as four camps watched, I pleaded with him.

"But I don't know the way around the lake!"

"You're in. Just follow Bill!" Barry smiled.

Bill was my friend and the fastest runner in our camp. And then Barry said, "When you make it to the last stretch（最后一程）on the field, just throw your head back and run."

At the starting line, I stood next to Bill and trembled.

"On your mark… Get set..." The gun cracked and sixteen of us took off. I stayed close on Bill's heels, a little too close for Bill, I guess. He shouted at me, "Back off!"

I did. Two guys passed me, but I kept my eyes on Bill.

It was tiring. The distance was widening between Bill and me. We made the turn from the dusty road onto the muddy, wooded trail that would go around the lake back to the field. Through the trees, I saw Bill trip over a tree root and fall. A runner from another camp passed him.

Wang Zhenyi is a Qing Dynasty astronomer and one of the greatest female scientists in Chinese history and one of the (great) female scientists in Chinese history. In 2004, the International Astronomical Union named a crater on Venus after her, to honor the woman beyond time and space. It was people like Wang Zhenyi did increased our curiosity about the universe.

One day, when I walked into band class and was 6 to play my flute (长笛), Mr. Kohler began the class. After we had played 7 for a little while, Mr. Kohler asked the class, "Who can tell what 8 it is just by hearing the pitch (音高) ?" Nobody raised their hands except Nathan. When I saw him, I laughed and thought he couldn't do anything9.

Improve the image of science.

Many people view science as something tough and boring. Much of this can be blamed on those movies and books that describe scientists as nerdy (书呆子). They can tell students how science has changed the world and say interesting things about the subject. They can encourage their students by showing different scientific experiments.

If a student sees that a teacher is knowledgeable and passionate about science, then they will try to follow in their footsteps. So, try to act as their role model.

Make it fun.

You should get students involved in science at an early stage and try to make it fun and interesting. You can use hands-on experiments to develop their interest in science.

Connect it to everyday life.

You should show students how science is used in everyday life. We have cellphones, video games, computers, etc. because of science.

Give them opportunities.

You can create competitions and ask the students to use science to come up with new ideas, designs, etc. You can encourage group competitions as well.

"There's a lot to discuss on the issue," says David Lindenmayer, a conservation ecologist at the Australian National University. "Climate change will mean that, in some forests, big trees won't reach the same sizes they used to." The effects of climate change, including long droughts, more invasive species and so on increase the simple physical challenges that big trees face in pulling water from their roots to their leaves and withstanding windstorms.

Lindenmayer and Laurance define "large, old trees" as the largest five percent mature trees within a species. The flexible definition means that in some forests, the large, old trees might be only 20 meters tall and 100 years old.

These large, old trees control the surrounding plant communities, affect water and nutrient distribution, and provide food and shelter for wildlife. "They're really the breadbaskets of the forest," says Laurance. "This is a very environmentally and ecologically important group of organisms, and they need special care and handling." Determining the distribution and habitat requirements for large, old trees in the landscape is the first step towards ensuring their survival, "We have to ensure that what we're thinking is long-term, to match the way these trees have existed for hundreds or even thousands of years," says Laurance. "It's going to be a real challenge to keep some places where there is still wildlife and the big church-like trees that we all really care about."

For the report published in Circulation: Heart Failure, researchers used machine learning to examine data from a large study from the Framingham Heart Study, referencing this data against two other studies. "Each study included at least 10 years of follow-up, and altogether the studies provided information on more than 21,000 U.S. adult participants," researchers said.

When analyzing the Framingham Heart Study, researchers noted that when compared to non-coffee drinkers, coffee drinkers' risk of heart failure decreased by 5% to 12% for each cup they drank each day. As for decaffeinated coffee, researchers noted that it did, not have the same benefits as caffeinated coffee, with one study suggesting that decaffeinated coffee may have an opposite effect.

Dr. David Kao, senior study author, said in a statement, "The relation between caffeine and heart failure risk reduction was surprising. Coffee and caffeine are often considered by the general population to be ‘bad' for the heart because people relate them to health problems like palpitations, high blood pressure, etc. The relationship between increasing caffeine consumption and decreasing heart failure risk turns that thought on its head."

"However, there is not yet enough clear evidence to prove that increasing coffee consumption can decrease the risk of heart disease with the same strength and certainty as stopping smoking, losing weight, or exercising," Kao noted. The researchers also warned that the findings only focused on black coffee, that is, plain coffee, without added sugar and high-fat dairy products such as cream.

The father had been making a career taking photographs for advertisements. But that experience gave him a new direction. Around the world, insect populations are in decline because of habitat loss and climate change. Biss thought that if people could see what he saw through his son's microscope, they would care more about protecting insects.

So Biss turned to macrophotography: taking close-up pictures of small things, like flowers or bugs. His work has attracted attention not just for its unusual beauty. It also raises awareness about the need for conservation.

In 2016, Biss showed his first insect project, Microsculpture. The term refers to the features of an insect's exoskeleton, or outer shell, which develops over time as the bug adapts to its environment.

Biss's pictures capture the insects in all their microscopic details. Then he blows up the images until the insects become larger than life, some of them eight feet tall. But each image takes weeks to make. He uses a digital camera with a microscope lens. The camera is fixed on a computerized track, which allows Biss to take a shot, then move the camera by seven microns (微米) — a distance equals to about 1/10 the thickness of a human hair — for the next shot. In the end, Biss might take 10,000 shots of a bug. A computer combines these small pictures into a single image.

Biss's latest exhibition is Extinct and Endangered at the American Museum of Natural History. He selected bugs that were extinct or endangered, hoping his photographs would serve as a better purpose. "I communicate visually," he says, "The way I work is through pictures. But I think it's my duty to shake things up and get people to pay attention."

Black Canyon (峡谷) of Gunnison National Park

This is probably the most interesting national park, offering a fascinating trip back in time to 600 AD up to 1300 AD．This park was declared a protected national park in 1906 because of the cliff dwellings(住所) that were found throughout the area, which were once home to American Indians. Many of these dwellings can be walked through, while you imagine what each room may have been used for so many years ago.

Great Sand Dunes (沙丘) National Park

The Great Sand Dunes National Park lies in south central Colorado, about 127 miles from Pueblo. This park has the tallest sand dunes in all of North America and has trails for hiking. The natural sandy beaches around the small rivers and lakes are good for swimmers.

8-year-old Evan was standing by the sidewalk when he noticed Mrs. Carter opening her shop. He smiled, relieved that the shop had not permanently closed.

Evan shook his head. "All I want is a big bouquet (花束) for my mom. Her name is Stacey and her birthday is one week away. Mom says we should work hard for what we want. I want to work hard for that bouquet. Can you hire me?" Evan asked. Mrs. Carter was impressed and nodded.

After he was hired, Evan's happiness knew no bounds. For a whole week, he would come to Mrs. Carter's store in the evenings and help her, and having Evan around relieved Mrs. Carter's boredom while working. Some customers thought Evan was lovely and entertaining, so they bought more flowers. Mrs. Carter's business became better.

A week later, on Evan's last day on the job, Mrs. Carter was emotional. They had grown close for working together, and Evan had become like a grandchild to her. She was making a huge bouquet for his mother, and her eyes welled up. Mrs. Carter secretly placed one envelope into the bouquet. The envelope contained $1100. When handing him the bouquet, she said, "Will you come to see me someday, Evan? I'd be delighted to have you here."

"I will, Mrs. Carter! I will tell mom about you today! She'll be so happy!" Evan smiled and waved goodbye to Mrs. Carter.
