As AI develops,it becomes challenging to distinguish between its content and human-created work. Before comparing both,it's good to know about the Perplexity &Burstiness of a text.
Perplexity is a measurement used to evaluate the performance of language models in predicting the next word in a group of words. It measures how well the model can estimate the
probability of a word occurring based on the previous context.A lower perplexity score indicates better predictability and understanding of the language, while a higher perplexity score suggests a higher degree of uncertainty and less accurate predictions. The human mind is so complex compared to current AI models that human-written text has high perplexity compared to AI-generated text.
Examples:
High Perplexity:"The teapot sang an opera of hot, wheeling tea, every steamy note a symphony of flavor."
Low Perplexity:"I poured hot water into the teapot, and a fresh smell filled the room." Burstiness refers to the variation in the length and structure of sentences within a piece of content. It measures the degree of diversity and unpredictability in the arrangement of sentences.Human writing often exhibits bursts and lulls(间歇),with a mix of long and short sentences, while AI-generated content tends to have a more uniform and regular pattern.
Higher burstiness indicates greater creativity, spontaneity( 自 发 性 ) ,and engagement in writing, while lower burstiness reflects a more robotic and monotonous(单调的)style.Just like the perplexity score,human-written content usually has a high burstiness score.
Examples:
High Burstiness:"The alarm screamed.Feet hit the floor.The tea kettle whistled.Steam streamed.Heart pounded.The world,awake."
Low Burstiness:"In the peaceful morning, the alarm clock's soft ring greeted a new day. I walked to the kitchen,my steps light and unhurried. The tea kettle whistled its gentle song, a comforting tune that harmonized with the steam's soft whisper."
Here,I wrote a passage on the"Importance of lifelong learning"myself and also asked ChatGPT to do the same to compare better AI-generated and human-written text.
(1)、What do Perplexity &Burstiness probably serve as?A、Complexities of a language. B、Criteria on features of a text. C、Phenomena of language varieties D、References in generating a text.(2)、What are the characteristics of an AI-generated text?A、Low perplexity and low burstiness B、High perplexity and low burstiness. C、Low perplexity and high burstiness. D、High perplexity and high burstiness(3)、Which of the writing ways below does the author skip when developing the article?A、Quoting sayings. B、Showing examples. C、Giving definitions. D、Making comparisons.(4)、What will be probably talked about next?A、Some essays from ChatGPT. B、An illustration for differences C、An example of the writer's own. D、Analyses of lifelong learning. -

As a college professor,I am required to hold an office hour before my lecture. These office hours are optional and tend to be busier at the beginning and end of a semester(学期).
In the middle, they can become quiet.A few years ago I was given a flute(长笛)as a gift,so I decided that I would use my quiet office hours to practice this new instrument. The experience brought unexpected insights into performance anxiety.
I held my office hour in the near-empty lecture hall, one hour before the class began. The hall was open to any student who wished to talk with me about coursework or to take a seat and quietly read before the lecture began.I would assemble( 组 装 )my flute, open my lesson book, and begin working on the instrument I had never played before.I also followed online video lessons—all done in front of a few students who would come early to class.
I would begin playing long tones, closing my eyes and "forgetting"that anyone was in the room with me.I was surprised to find that I felt no anxiety while learning a new instrument in front of others.Had I been playing my main instrument,I would have had more concern about the level of my playing and how my playing was being received. However,in this setting,it was clear that I was an absolute beginner with no expectations of impressing anyone with my mastery. My attention was set on figuring the instrument out.I had no expectations of how I would sound and had little expectations of sounding like anything more than a beginner.
There have been many things I have learned from my experiment of learning an instrument in public.Whenever musicians talk with me about their stage fright,I offer them this story.
(1)、What is"an office hour"for?A、The professors to show talents. B、The students to appreciate music. C、The teachers to offer consultation. D、The lecturers to make preparations.(2)、Why did the author play a flute?A、To pass the time. B、To give a lecture. C、To do a research. D、To attract students.(3)、What made the author at ease when playing the flute?A、The technique from the video. B、His impressive performance. C、The audience's active response. D、His concentration on playing.(4)、Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?A、My Joy of Learning a New Thing B、My Tip on Performing in the Public C、My Discovery to Ease Stage Fright D、My Office Hour Before Every Lesson -

Maddy's daughter Cathy suffered from a condition called spina bifida (脊柱裂). She spent most of her life in a wheelchair, which made even the simplest tasks a tough challenge. One such challenge for Cathy was getting a haircut. As Maddy's neighbor, I witnessed the daily struggle firsthand and felt the urge to help. A hairstylist myself, I decided to visit Maddy's home to cut Cathy's hair. Little did I know this small act would light a spark within me.
Through my visits, I realized that many others in our community had the same problem. Maddy explained the difficulties special groups of people encountered —— the loud noises and strong smells in regular hair salons were too much for people with autism (自闭症). Also, just getting into a salon was tough for people in wheelchairs. Her words touched me, and I wondered if there was something more I could do to help.
An idea began to form in my mind—I could open a special salon, a place where people with physical disabilities or psychological problems would feel more comfortable. It wouldn't just be easy to enter for people in wheelchairs; it would also have floors with different textures(纹理) to help those who can't see well. To make the place even more comfortable, it would have calm music instead of loud pop songs. Toys and blankets would be on hand to help people stay calm. Hairstylists would use quiet hair dryers and soft voices. They would also learn how to help customers who don't like others touching their hair. Most importantly, they would treat every customer with the same level of respect.
The only issue was that I didn't have the funds to make this dream a reality. As a hairstylist, I had limited savings. Maddy suggested," How about organizing a community bazaar(义卖) in our neighborhood this Saturday to raise funds for the salon?" Her eyes shone with enthusiasm as she continued," People love supporting good causes, and I'm sure many would join in to help create a place where everyone feels comfortable getting a haircut. " I nodded, recognizing the brilliance in her plan.

The next day, after we got3 at our hotel, I took Leopold to meet his snowboarding4 . My hope was that Leopold would seize this5 to snowboard on a mountain of this size. Productivity can be a struggle for many of us. It can be easy to feel upset with overflowing email inboxes, housework, social responsibilities. Write it down, do the tasks and cross them off!
According to the psychologist David Cohen, there are three key reasons why lists are beneficial. Firstly, they help to drown out the disorder and anxiety that comes with having never- ending tasks. By writing everything down, we don't have to rely on our memory and can instead focus on the task at hand.Secondly, lists provide structure and guidance, giving us a plan to follow. As well as this, our brains are more likely to keep information that is presented in a structured and organized manner.. They act as proof of what we have achieved, which can help boost our sense of accomplishment and motivation. Seeing our progress on paper can be a great motivator to keep going and tackle more tasks.
Another possible reason why our brains love lists is something called the" Zeigarnik Effect". This is the name psychologists use for when we remember things we need to do, our unfinished tasks, better than things we have already completed. Researchers from Wake Forest University tested the interference of the Zeigarnik effect on a group of people. The researchers concluded that the group permitted to plan had reduced anxiety and performed better in the next task.
In conclusion, the to- do list is an invaluable tool for managing our daily lives. It just might be the key to unlocking your full potential.
A. Finally, lists give us the psychological boost as well.
B. Instead, we can check our lists to remind us of what's next.
C. This not only helps us stay organized but also reduces mental stress.
D. Nevertheless, making a to- do list is not always a straightforward process.
E. However, one simple tool that can help us stay on top of everything is the to- do list.
F. The next time you feel overwhelmed, grab a pen and paper, and start making your list.
G. This finding highlights the importance of completing tasks and crossing them off our lists.

The idea that night owls who don't go to bed until the early hours struggle to get anything done during the day may have to be revised. It turns out that staying up late could be good for our brain power as research suggests that people who identify as night owls could be sharper than those who go to bed early.
Researchers led by academics at Imperial College London studied data from the UK Biobank study on more than 26,000 people who had completed intelligence, reasoning, reaction time and memory tests. They then examined how participants' sleep duration, quality, and chronotype (睡眠类型) affected brain performance. They found that those who stayed up late and those classed as" intermediate" had" superior cognitive function", while morning risers had the lowest scores.
Going to bed late is strongly associated with creative types. Artists, authors and musicians known to be night owls include Henride Toulouse- Lautrec, James Joyce and Kanye West; But while politicians such as , Winston Churchill and Barack Obama famously seemed to thrive on little sleep, the study found that sleep duration is important for brain function, with those getting between seven and nine hours of shut- eye each night performing best in cognitive tests.
Dr Raha West, lead author and clinical research fellow at the department of surgery and cancer at Imperial College London, said:" While understanding and working with your natural sleep tendencies is essential, it's equally important to remember to get just enough sleep, not too long or too short. This is crucial for keeping your brain healthy and functioning at its best."
Prof Daqing Ma, the co- leader of the study who is also from Imperial's department of surgery and cancer, added:" We found that sleep duration has a direct effect on brain function, and we believe that actively managing sleep patterns is really important for boosting, and safeguarding, the way our brains work.
(1)、What do we know about night owls?A、Night owls struggle to do things in daytime. B、Night owls don't like sleeping. C、Night owls may be more intelligent. D、Night owls have to stay up late.(2)、What is the author's purpose in mentioning some people in paragraph 3?A、To show they sleep less but perform better. B、To illustrate creation is linked with late sleep. C、To explain the importance of less sleeping. D、To identify which type of person can sleep less.(3)、What will Pro Daqing Ma agree with?A、Active management of sleep patterns is significant. B、The more we sleep, the better our brain are. C、Our brain function directly relies on sleeping. D、Sleep seven to nine hours a day, keep doctors away.(4)、Which is the best title of the passage?A、Sleeping pattern is essential. B、Staying up will make us creative. C、Night owls' sleeping behavior" better" than early risers. D、Night owls' cognitive function" superior" to early risers. -

What exactly is an audiobook today? Is it a book? Is it a play? Or is it becoming something else entirely? What is clear is that a push for market dominance is driving it into a new trend.
Amazon- owned Audible, the market leader, hired the Oscar- winning director Sam Mendes to record multi- voice versions of the Dickens novels Oliver Twist and David Copperfield, making audiobooks the performing of the plays, and announced last month that it had reached an agreement for a recording of JK Rowling's Harry Potter series, voice d by more than 100 actors and featuring a" groundbreaking new soundscape". The new Potter audiobooks, it said, would not take over but maintain conventional recordings by Stephen Fry and Jim Dale, which Audible also hosts.
To say that audio versions are different does not mean they are worse than printed texts. For people with dyslexia(阅读障碍) or ADHD (多动症), they can be a lifeline— as they can be for those who do not have time, or the habit, of reading books. Commuters, and men between the ages of 25 and 44, have been identified as key drivers of their growing popularity.
The good news for those who secretly find audiobooks more accessible, but are embarrassed to admit it, is that brain scans have revealed that they stimulate the same cognitive and emotional parts of the brain. But so would a radio play. Listening to stories, another intriguing piece of research revealed, sets the pulse racing far more than watching them.
So while we celebrate what audiobooks have in common with their print versions – both enable the brain to create its own pictures in a world where pre- manufactured images too often do all the work for us- we should also appreciate that they are translations into a different medium, even when read by the authors themselves. What is certain is that there is room for both.
(1)、What's the function of Paragraph 1?A、To introduce a scientific study. B、To lead in the topic. C、To describe an experience. D、To give an example.(2)、What is the new trend of audiobooks?A、Employing talented performers. B、Using prize- winning novels. C、Replacing traditional recording. D、Making them into plays.(3)、What is the benefit of audiobooks?A、They motivate the cognitive- emotional brain. B、They promote relaxation for busy individuals. C、They make reading accessible for the disabled. D、They are most likely to decrease the sense of thrill.(4)、What's the author's attitude towards audiobooks?A、Worried. B、Hopeful. C、Uncertain. D、Curious. -

Nothing screamed freedom for me as a kid like green rubber boots. Each winter meant new boots for my little brother and me. Sometimes they were Christmas presents, but more often they were simply necessities for two boys who took their job of getting dirty very seriously and whose feet grew like they stepped in fertilizer each night.
Depending on the model, they might have long yellow laces (鞋带) all the way up the front and a strip of yellow rubber around the top. Sometimes we got the common slip- on kind, but I liked the lace- up type better. I loved threading those laces in and out and in and out and then fastened them down tight at the top to lock the legs of my overalls or jeans in place. You couldn't maintain the wavy effect with the slip- on kind, so you couldn't look like a British soldier for very long with those.
The only drawback to the laces was that over time the plastic tip would wear off and the laces would be worn out. Then threading them through the eyes got to be a chore- especially when some weeds or insects would grab hold of the ends and make a sticky mess.
Getting boots at the store was nice, but nothing was better than getting boot s in a wrapped- up box. The best ones have a pretty lid(盖子) and open like a treasure chest. Sometimes a big sticker with a picture of the boots greeted us from under the wrapped paper. But every time, raising the lid released a sweet smell of rubbery goodness.
I loved the smooth inside of the boot, and moving my toes in it. There was always plenty of space for growing feet. Then came the important walk around the room and up and down the hall, booming along on the hardwood floor. Best of all was the bang of the back door, the clumping down steps, and the heavy, thunderous thunderous thunk, thunk across the yard to the nearest hole of mud and freedom.
(1)、What made a boot necessary for me?A、Playing in dirt freely. B、Protecting the feet in winter. C、Stepping in fertilizer every night. D、Showing off as a Christmas present.(2)、What does paragraph 2mainly talk about?A、The feature of rubber boots. B、My image in lace- up boots. C、The effect of rubber boots. D、My preference for lace- up boots.(3)、What does the underlined word" drawback" in paragraph 3 mean?A、Strength. B、Shortage. C、Attraction. D、Boredom.(4)、The rubber boot attracted me except ____.A、the feeling of opening its package box. B、the smell of the rubber. C、the inside surface of the boot. D、the sound of the boot kicking the door. -

"MEATLOAF AGAIN?"I stared at the plate with a feeling of disappointment.
My mom knew how to make seven meals. That was all. She kept all seven recipes labeled with a day of the week. That day was Meatloaf Monday. Again.
" It's just, it had been Tun a Tuesdays and Spaghetti Saturdays for, like, my entire life. Not every meal had to start with the same letter as a day of the week."
My mom's eyes flashed. But she said nothing. I knew she didn't consider learning new recipes due to her overwhelming stress.
The next day I was sitting next to Tania, whose dad was the best cook, in our school's brand- new- since- six- months- ago kitchen classroom. Everything— the tables, the stove, the pots and pans—— sh one and sparkled. I was about to ask Tania about a new recipe, but Mr. Bruin, our teacher, interrupted.
"I've got exciting news," he said. Exciting news? The class stopped talking and looked expectantly at Mr. Bruin." To finish off our unit on kitchen skills, we were having a competition where you didn't have a recipe and you had to make something with whatever ingredients the judges gave you." An eager murmur traveled through the class." You've learned a lot this term— accurate measuring, food prep, cooking techniques. Just add some creativity to the mix."
"Will there be prizes?" asked Samantha.
"Absolutely! And the first- place prize was the newest book in the Cave of the Dragons series," said Mr. Bruin, holding up a copy for everyone to see.
The class erupted into squeals and cheers. Cave of the Dragons was the best book series ever! It had been sold out everywhere. During the break, all anyone could talk about was the cooking competition ."I'm totally going to win," said Tania." Genes, like, cooking was in my DNA." And if there was some sort of cooking gene, my mom definitely didn't have it. So, if I wanted to win, I needed to practise and innovate.

Do you feel overwhelmed, frustrated, or uninterested in life lately? There are some effective ways to deal with these feelings and regain control over your life.
If you' re feeling lost, the first step to regaining direction is to admit your feelings to yourself. Remind yourselfthat it's perfectly normal to feel disappointed, or unfulfilled sometimes— everybody does at some point! These feelings are natural reactions to overwhelming events or changes.
Ask yourself why you' re feeling lost.
You don't have to unearth the answer right away. Just ask yourself introspective (内省的) questions while journaling or meditating to turn your attention inward. The journey to find your way again is highly personal and there are no right or wrong feelings to have!
Replace negative behavior or habits with healthier routines.
Do you have any less- than- helpful habits that weigh you down, like endlessly scrolling through social media or snapping at loved ones when you' re stressed? Instead, swap these habits with new, positive ones.
Work with a mental health professional if you' re stuck.
It's normal to need outside guidance to find your way in life again. If you find yourself at a loss for what to do next or aren't su re how to cope with your feelings, see a therapist or counselor. Additionally, they can show you how to make meaningful changes in your life to make you happier, healthier, and more enthusiastic about the future.

Mountain chickadees(山雀) have some of the strongest spa cial memories in the animal kingdom. New research reveals the genes involved and sheds light on how a changing climate may influence the evolution of this particular skill.
In a new study, researchers at the University of Colorado Boulder and the University of Nevada, Reno identify nearly a hundred genes associated with the birds' special memory, or ability to recall the locations of objects. The paper also suggests a potential balance may exist between having a solid long- term memory and being able to quickly remove old memories to form new ones.
Taylor, the director of CU Boulder's Mountain Research Station and his associates at the University of Nevada, Reno, lead by biologist professor Vladimir Pravosudov, designed a novel technique to assess the spa cial memory of wild mountain chickadees. They hung various feeder groups in California's Sierra Nevada mountains, each with eight seed- filled bird feeders. Each feeder has a gate equipped with a radio frequency reader capable of detecting a tag placed on chickadees by researchers. The scientists then configured(设定) each gate to only open to specific birds, forcing the chickadees to remember which feeders would open to them. Pravosudo v and his team then counted how many times each chickadee landed on the wrong feeders before they recalled the right one.
Using blood samples, the CU Boulder team sequenced(测定序列) the whole genome of 162tagged chickadees, resulting in the largest database t ever collected for examining the genetic basis of chickade e cognitive ability. The team discovered 97 genes involved in chickadee special learning and memory by comparing the birds' genomes to their performance on the feeder test.
The findings could help biologists better understand the evolution of spa cial memory in animals, including humans." Chickadees are impressive birds," said Scott Taylor." They can remember tens of thousands of locations where they store food across an entire winter and a new set of those the next winter. Their special memory is much more developed than many other birds that don't have to have this strategy to survive cold winters."
(1)、What do we know about mountain chickadees' spa cial memories?A、They are linked with a hundred relevant genes. B、They maintain a good balance in locating objects. C、They are considered powerful in the animal world. D、They might account for the slow change of climate.(2)、What can a radio frequency reader do in the test?A、Lower the error rate of the chickadees. B、Count the times each chickadee failed. C、Colle ct the food information of a feeder. D、Identify the chickadee landing on a feeder.(3)、What does paragraph 4 focus on about the study?A、Blood sampling. B、Genes involved. C、Ability comparing. D、Data gathered.(4)、What does Scott Taylor imply in the last paragraph?A、Chickadees possess amazing evolutionary capability. B、Many other birds should improve their spa cial memory. C、Food storage is vital to the survival of animals in winter. D、Chickadees' spa cial memory carries them through winter. -

Air conditioning use has exploded in the last 30 years. According to U. S. Census data in1993, just about three- quarters of single family homes in the Midwest had air conditioning. In the West and Northeast, it was just about half. Now, all regions are pushing 100 percent air conditioning coverage. In the South, it's been at about 100 percent since the early 1990s.
As the cost of air conditioning installation has gone down, and temperatures have gone up, Americans have been offered an opportunity for a steady indoor temperature year- round, regardless of the weather outside. This drive for comfort forces us to disconnect from what's happening all around us. A conditioned climate allows us to completely ignore the changing seasons and our warming planet. Only listening to people who agree with us—— or trying to silence those who disagree— creates our own, individually conditioned realities.
New York University professor and social psychologist Jonathan Haidt showed how the comforts of conveniences" atomize" our social structures. Each new technology that makes our lives easier also makes us less reliant on other people. Haidt's big focus is on smartphones and social media, as ex plored in his recent book, but our society was cracking off into smaller and smaller pieces long before we had the robots in our pockets.
Cars allowed us to shop in other towns, reducing reliance on local businesses. A television set gave something for people to do in the evenings, reducing the need to hang out with neighbors, and by extension, eroding community structures and institutions( often called" third places," in contrast to work and home). Air conditioning allowed us to stay inside in the heat, limiting a play- based childhood where kids run around with each other and make their own fun.
What if we all turned off the air condition ing for a bit, opened our windows, and truly experienced life as it was happening, not what we manufactured it to be? We might be a little less comfortable, but maybe a little more connected.
(1)、What can we infer from the first two paragraphs?A、Air conditioning easily shapes our individual personality. B、Air conditioned houses are more comfortable than others. C、Air conditioning can reduce our connection with the world. D、Air conditioning is accessible to every household in the US.(2)、Why does the author mention Haidt?A、To promote his recent book. B、To illustrate technological advances. C、To praise human self- reliance. D、To reveal the harm of air conditioning.(3)、What does the word" eroding" underlined in paragraph 4 refer to?A、Constructing. B、Destroying, C、Avoiding. D、Improving.(4)、Which of the following is the best title for the text?A、Turn off Air Conditioning for a Bit B、Experience Your Life to the Fullest C、Keep Away from Air Conditioned Houses D、Never Create Our Own Conditioned Realities -

Chin was partially paralysed in 2018 after a stroke. For several months, she remained in hospital and began to rebuild her strength and ability to communicate." At the beginning, I was so weak I couldn't even use a wheelchair," she says."I realised that I wouldn't be able to go back to my old life."
Asking for help was particularly difficult as Chin didn't want to feel like a burden, but after being recommended a course of therapy(疗法), she started to glimpse a future for herself. She started opening up to other people and one day her social worker suggested she should try a sport." She mentioned the wheelchair basketball team and I decided to give it a try," she says.
The first two times Rose Chin arrived at the basketball court as a 65- year- old , to try out for the Inverness wheelchair team, she couldn't make it past the doors."I looked through the window and just thought:‘I can't do this,'" she says." The third time, though, I made myself go through before I could think about it. The team welcomed me with open arms and it's changed the way I live in my wheelchair ever since."
Following that successful third attempt onto the court in 2022, Chin was enlisted as part of the 10- person team and began attending weekly training sessions learning how to pass, throw and defend while moving herself in a specially designed chair." We very quickly became a little family with a WhatsApp group full of jokes," she laughs."I'm the oldest on the team and the youngest is 19 but when I play, age doesn't come into it— it's such a pleasure."
"I feel so independent and I know I will keep playing for as long as I can," she says."I want us to raise more money to get more equipment so we can encourage others to join. They might be feeling like I was, but I want them to know that there's opportunity out there— they don't have to be alone."
