My name is Jake Reynolds. That year, I was a junior at a high school. I was known for my good grades and honesty, but I encountered a situation that would test my integrity in ways I hadn't imagined.

It all started with Mr. Lawson's history class. We had been assigned a major essay on the impacts of World War II, which would account for a significant part of our final grade. The essay was due in two weeks, and I had been tirelessly working on it, staying up late to ensure my research was thorough and my arguments were well organized.

The day before the essay was due, my computer crashed. I panicked as I realized I had lost almost all of my work. I had saved some drafts on a cloud service, but they were outdated and incomplete. It seemed impossible to start over. At that moment, desperation clouded my judgment.

As I sat at my desk, trying to figure out what I could do, my friend Daniel knocked on my door. He was also struggling with his essay and knew I had been working hard on mine. Noticing my worry, he asked if I needed help. I hesitated, but ultimately admitted what had happened.

Daniel looked thoughtful, "You know, I heard about a website that offers ready-made essays. It could be a good idea to try it if you really need to."

The idea seemed like a lifeline. I knew it was wrong, but the pressure was mounting, and I felt cornered. After a moment's hesitation, I decided to use the website. I quickly purchased an essay, changed it slightly to make it fit the assignment, and submitted it. I felt a sense of relief, but it was short-lived.

The next morning, Mr. Lawson announced that the essays would be graded using plagiarism (剽窃) detection software. My heart sank, and I knew it wouldn't take long for the software to catch it.

As a Chinese-German student at Tsinghua University, I thought I had already had a (well) grasp of both Chinese culture and modernization. Yet, my recent visit to Suzhou gave me a fresh perspective (视角) on tradition and modernity coexist harmoniously in this city.

Your bold inspiration doesn't have to be real. You could even think of a character from a movie or book who's daring and brave. Then, imagine their boldness in your life. If you already know someone bold, imagine how they'd act. Studies show your mood can be affected by your behavior.

While there's power in taking on something new or trying to get what you want, there's also the chance you may fail. Embrace the failure. It's not the opposite of success, it's a necessary component. Without the risk of failure, you don't have the opportunity for success.

Being bold lets you oxford, embrace, and take charge of your life.

Well into the 20th century, most Europeans worked on farms and they mistakenly blamed foreign competition for their suffering. Their protests eventually led to the Smoot-Hawley Tariff (关税) Act (SHTA) that started a global trade war that lasted for decades.

At that time, the economic damage from SHTA turned out to be relatively small. For example, at that time, international trade accounted for only 9 percent of America's GDP.

However, the law proved very harmful in the long term, by damaging the political and moral foundations of international trade that John Stuart Mill had described more than a century earlier: "International trade first taught nations to see with goodwill the wealth and progress of one another. Before that, citizens and political leaders usually wished all countries weak, poor, and ill-governed but their own. After that, they learned to see in other countries' wealth and progress a direct source of wealth and progress to their own country."

After the Second World War, political leaders finally understood the importance of dismantling (拆除) the previous decades' tariff walls and succeeded in establishing today's global order that drove the worldwide tariff average of nearly 30 percent in 1945 down to about 5 percent today.

Economic historians have long known that free international trade does not lift all boats. Its benefits may not be equally enjoyed by all, but its costs, as experienced by European farmers in the 19th century and by American factory workers today, are concentrated and severe. Even so, the broad benefits of free trade far outweigh the concentrated harms.

It's certainly true that AI is a wonderful new tool dramatically transforming human life. AI is getting faster and better at spotting patterns in complicated information. This helps it guess what might happen next-like predicting what a customer will buy, the next word in a sentence, a sound in spoken language, or many other tasks. AI can answer specific complex questions or perform complex calculations at a rate impossible for the human mind to comprehend, let alone compete with. It can also create images and speeches which not only imitate reality but surpass it to meet programmed standards of excellence.

However, although these may be helpful to adults seeking to improve productivity, it is necessary to follow G. K. Chesterton's advice that children should not be controlled by educational projects and ideas without scientific proof. Allowing students to avoid traditional learning methods with AI will have uncertain and potentially harmful results. The same could be true of educators' dependence on AI for student assessment and lesson planning. In education at least, it is quite possible that AI will work against natural human development and provide not a short cut to human formation but a short circuit.

Despite AI's influence, traditional learning and writing assignments are crucial for promoting learning and cognitive development. Homework, similar to music practice, teaches discipline and skills essential for personal growth and future success. Deceptive (欺骗性的) practices harm genuine learning, spoiling students' competitiveness in an AI-dominated job market. Reliance on AI-generated content weakens critical thinking and creativity, damaging students' intellectual growth. Moreover, it devalues the role of teachers in guiding students' development. In contrast, real engagement with homework cultivates invaluable human qualities essential in an AI-driven world, ensuring students' competitive advantage and overall development.

The idea of spending time abroad hadn't occurred to me until my advisor suggested it during my first year. With his support, I enjoyed a remarkable summer in a laboratory in Japan, which left me wanting more. So, I applied for a Fulbright fellowship in Poland. To receive the fellowship, I first had to find a lab to host me, and neither I nor my advisor had any connections to Poland.

Relying on Google to translate lab websites, I began to send cold emails. When my eventual host responded, eager to collaborate, I was thrilled. I suddenly felt the possibilities for my research career were endless and global.

I was the first visiting scholar my research group had hosted from the United States, and my Polish colleagues were curious about what brought me to their country. This led to many fruitful discussions about the similarities and differences in how science is conducted across cultures. For example, much of the funding in Poland is awarded to teams rather than individuals. The system promotes cross-disciplinary (跨学科的) cooperations across the country, which in turn shapes how scientists design and carry out studies.

I learned as much about the history and culture in Central and Eastern Europe as I did scientifically. Colleagues related firsthand accounts about challenges the region faced during the Cold War. Many laboratories had limited resources, and they rarely published their research in English. Those conditions helped shape research on antimicrobial treatment into bacteriophage and antibiotics, and Poland remain leaders in the former to this day.

My cultural immersion made me a better researcher. I now see cross-cultural cooperations as a way to overcome communication barriers that can block progress in science. By stepping outside my comfort zone, I gained the confidence to navigate my research in new directions that I might have otherwise boxed myself out of.

Humans depend on bees and other "pollinators (授粉者)" like butterflies to help grow plants, such as flowers and trees. But with humans taking over more and more land for cities, roads and farms, more natural areas have disappeared. The Wildlife Trusts, a group which works to protect wildlife in the UK, says that the insect numbers there have dropped by 50% since 1970. Bee bus stops are a small step toward supporting these important insects.

The advertising company Clear Channel is working with The Wildlife Trusts and city governments to set up bee bus stops in cities across the UK. Bee bus stops are like ordinary bus shelters, but small gardens have been added to the roofs to attract bees and butterflies. The company plans to set up 1,000 bee bus stops in the UK.

Clear Channel already has bee bus stop programs in several countries in Europe. In the Netherlands, the city of Utrecht has 300 bee bus stops. Research shows that these bus stops— along with many other steps taken to support pollinators — may be helping. After decades of dropping numbers, bee populations in the Netherlands seem to have become more stable over the last few years.

The little gardens can also help to slightly lower city temperatures. Even though the bus shelter gardens are small, together they add up to a much larger area. Thirzah McSherry, who works for The Wildlife Trusts, says, "We're living through a nature and climate crisis and we need to use every tool we've got to deal with it."

Jaramillo's students live in neighborhoods where fresh food and green space are not easy to find and fast-food restaurants outnumber grocery stores. "The kids literally come to school with bags of snacks and large bottles of soft drinks," she says. "They come to us thinking vegetables are awful, dirt is awful, insects are awful." Though some are scared of the insects and turned off by the dirt at first, most are eager to try something new.

Urban Sprouts' classes, at two middle schools and two high schools, include hands-on experiments such as soil testing, flower-and-seed dissection, tastings of fresh or dried produce, and work in the garden. Several times a year, students cook the vegetables they grow, and they occasionally make salads for their entire schools.

Program evaluations show that kids eat more vegetables as a result of the classes. "We have students who say they went home and talked to their parents and now they're eating differently," Jaramillo says.

She adds that the program's benefits go beyond nutrition (营养). Some students get so interested in gardening that they bring home seeds to start their own vegetable gardens. Besides, working in the garden seems to have a calming effect on Jaramillo's special education students, many of whom have emotional control issues. "They get outside," she says, "and they feel successful."

I couldn't forget the way I was frozen in front of the class today. My teacher, Mr. Liu had divided the class into groups to do speeches. Today was my turn. Moral: Skills, knowledge, abilities and experiences (be) only useful if you are at the right place.

Floodwater can be a breeding ground for mosquitoes (蚊子) which carry diseases. You should avoid floodwater whenever possible. Here are practical safety tips：

Avoid flooded areas.

Do not drive, walk or swim through floodwaters. It can be difficult to judge the depth of the water, and unknown dangers may be hidden by it.

Clean and disinfect (消毒) items that have touched floodwater.

Taking a dual approach to cleaning up after a flood is crucial. Cleaners remove dirt and grime, and disinfectants stop the growth of bacteria carried in floodwater. If you are cleaning areas that have mold growing, it's also recommended to wear a N95 mask.

Make sure the food you eat are clean.

Don't eat food that may have come into contact with floodwater. Even if the food is packaged, it could have been exposed to bacteria from the floodwater.

Polluted water can contain bacteria and cause serious infections. Follow water safety advisories to boil water before drinking or use bottled water. If needed, bring water to a rolling boil for one full minute to kill water­borne bacteria.

Never expose an open wound to floodwater.

During flood cleanup, there's a risk of developing cuts, open wounds or blisters, which could increase the risk of infection. Apply an antibiotic ointment (药膏) and cover it with a waterproof bandage.

Wash your hands often and thoroughly.

If you've come into contact with floodwater or objects that have touched floodwater, it's vital to clean your hands with soap and water or alcohol­based hand sanitizer (消毒剂)．
