• 1、Disinformation, which is false information spread on purpose, has become a cause of concern recently. In response to this rising global threat, the United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) Canberra and its partners will be organizing a two-day conference, DISINFO PACIFIC, on November 11 and 12, 2024.

    The conference will focus on strategies for preventing and reducing disinformation, as well as applying best practices to address this global challenge. It aims to provide a forum (论坛) for journalists, social media experts, educators, researchers, policy-makers and communications professionals, from within and outside the UN.

    Currently, we are in search of social media volunteers to provide online assistance for this conference.

  • 7、Today's globalization discontent begins with Henry Bessemer, whose invention in 1858 greatly improved the quality of steel and sharply reduced its price.   • 9、"What have I gotten myself into?" I wondered as I sat through a research meeting conducted entirely in Polish, unable to even read the title on the screen. Having only basic Polish language skills, I found my experiment in cross-cultural cooperation more challenging than I had expected.

And at first it is, says Abby Jaramillo, who with another teacher started Urban Sprouts, a school garden program at four low-income schools. The program aims to help students develop science skills, environmental awareness, and healthy lifestyles.

    Jaramillo's students live in neighborhoods where fresh food and green space are not easy to find and fast-food restaurants outnumber grocery stores. "The kids literally come to school with bags of snacks and large bottles of soft drinks," she says. "They come to us thinking vegetables are awful, dirt is awful, insects are awful." Though some are scared of the insects and turned off by the dirt at first, most are eager to try something new.

    Urban Sprouts' classes, at two middle schools and two high schools, include hands-on experiments such as soil testing, flower-and-seed dissection, tastings of fresh or dried produce, and work in the garden. Several times a year, students cook the vegetables they grow, and they occasionally make salads for their entire schools.

    Program evaluations show that kids eat more vegetables as a result of the classes. "We have students who say they went home and talked to their parents and now they're eating differently," Jaramillo says.

    She adds that the program's benefits go beyond nutrition (营养). Some students get so interested in gardening that they bring home seeds to start their own vegetable gardens.     Floodwater can be a breeding ground for mosquitoes (蚊子) which carry diseases. You should avoid floodwater whenever possible. Here are practical safety tips:

    Avoid flooded areas.

    Do not drive, walk or swim through floodwaters. It can be difficult to judge the depth of the water, and unknown dangers may be hidden by it.

    Clean and disinfect (消毒) items that have touched floodwater.

    Taking a dual approach to cleaning up after a flood is crucial. Cleaners remove dirt and grime, and disinfectants stop the growth of bacteria carried in floodwater. If you are cleaning areas that have mold growing, it's also recommended to wear a N95 mask.

    Make sure the food you eat are clean.

    Don't eat food that may have come into contact with floodwater. Even if the food is packaged, it could have been exposed to bacteria from the floodwater.
