1、A new study from a German research group says climate change will reduce everyone's income (收入) by about 19 percent over the next 25 years. That would be about $38 trillion per year. But the report warns it could get worse between 25 and 75 years from now if nothing is done soon. Developed countries such as Germany, the United States and France would face smaller decreases. The researchers foresaw that people living in those countries would see 11 to 13 percent less income. The greatest economic effect will be felt by people in the least-developed nations.
The researchers first estimated (估算) what the world's economic growth would be without climate change. They then applied those values to the damage to economies if climate change continues at its present pace. There will still be economic growth, but it will be 19 percent lower in most places once the damage of climate change is taken into consideration.
Most at the research group have been centering on extreme weather events such as heat waves, floods, typhoons, hurricanes and other large storms. However, the effects are still mainly driven by average warming or overall temperature increases. The average world temperature last year was a record. That number was 1.35 ℃ above the average during pre-industrial times, before modern technology.
In the US, the southeastern and southwestern states such as New Mexico and Arizona are estimated to suffer the largest economic effects. In Europe, Spain and Italy are likely to feel the effects more than countries like Denmark and Germany. Areas that are usually cold for most of the year — Canada, Russia, Norway, Finland, and Sweden — will have good results from warming.
Experts note that the world's poorest countries are also the least prepared to adapt to climate change. Those countries are least responsible for the change, but they will agonize 60 percent more income loss than wealthy nations.
(1)、What does the new study mainly show?A、The causes of climate change. B、The process of climate change. C、The economic losses caused by climate change. D、The health problems caused by climate change.(2)、What have most of the researchers been focusing on?A、Application value. B、Temperature decreases. C、Modern technology. D、Natural disasters.(3)、Why is Canada less affected by climate change?A、It has a large area. B、It has cold weather. C、It is underdeveloped. D、It has a small population.(4)、What does the underlined word "agonize" in the last paragraph mean?A、Research. B、Suffer. C、Avoid. D、Reduce. -
2、My good friend, George, was influenced by his parents, who are some of the best examples of giving, whether they get paid or not.
When I was a little child, I joined George and his mom in going to Erin's house, bringing food and daily supplies with us. Obviously, Erin's family faced economic trouble and could hardly afford food. George and I took several bags of things to the door, rang the bell and ran off. Erin still doesn't know to this day who did that. Since then, I've always given whatever I could afford to help the people in need.
You never knew what my act would lead the people in need to do. A few years ago, I came across a homeless man begging for money to get bread at a bus stop. I could have ignored him, but I felt sorry for him and pulled out my wallet. I only had $ 20 in my hand. I was just a college student. However, I handed him the money, and he promised me that he'd find a job to make a living. When I got on the bus, he smiled at me and said,"I'll remember you forever!"I also smiled. It totally made my day, and I would also never forget his face. Later, I lent my phone to one boy to call his family and managed to help his worried mother find a job online.
Though an act of kindness toward anyone can seem like no big deal to me and cost me nearly nothing, I believe in the effects it can have on other people. Hopefully, they still have faith in humanity. It's the kind of interaction that is more valuable than money. Since doing good is within our power, let's help out more.
(1)、What made the author start helping others?A、The request from Erin. B、The request from George's parents. C、His childhood experience of doing good with George. D、His past experience of giving money to the homeless.(2)、How does the author develop paragraph 3?A、By giving reasons. B、By giving examples. C、By making suggestions. D、By making comparisons.(3)、What is the author's purpose in writing the last paragraph?A、To call on people to do good. B、To explain doing good costs nothing. C、To advise people to remember others' help. D、To show interaction is as valuable as money.(4)、What is the best title for the text?A、Give to Get Paid B、Try to Make My Day C、A Big Deal with the Honest D、The Power of Kindness -
3、Four Best Islands to Visit in November
No matter what the year has thrown at you, a November trip to a tropical (热带的)island is a great experience. Follow along for four of the best islands to visit in November.
Curacao Island
Curacao Island is surrounded by colorful fish and coral (珊瑚) gardens, making it one of the best diving destinations in the Caribbean. This island packs a lot more than that. The island earned recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site (联合国教科文组织世界遗产)for its historic colored buildings. Besides, November also brings calm waters and clear air, which means excellent visibility for divers.
Sanibel Island
Sanibel Island in November sees the end of the rainy season and fewer crowds. While the weather is still perfect for the beach in Sanibel Island, things cool off at night. So you won't be sweating every minute of the day. Cooler weather opens up opportunities for bike rides around the island. Besides, You could easily find a comfortable house on the seafront without breaking the bank.
Molokai
While November might mark the start of its wet season, lower prices and fewer tourists make travelling to Molokai during this period still attractive. Molokai is often called Hawaii's forgotten island, no big resorts, just untouched landscapes. Besides colorful plants in every direction, Molokai also experiences an increase in cultural events: Thanksgiving festivities and the Hawaii International Film Festival spring to mind.
Raja Ampat
Raja Ampat is almost as untouched as the day it was created. Each island is a forest-covered mountain hiding secret lakes at their base. So why hasn't the place become hot popular in the world of tropical tourism? Well, it's far (and pricey) to get to, and accommodation costs a pretty penny. Apart from that, the area is a protected national park.
(1)、Which of the following has been officially recognized throughout the world?A、Curacao Island. B、Sanibel Island. C、Molokai. D、Raja Ampat.(2)、What do Sanibel Island and Molokai have in common?A、They hosted the Hawaii International Film Festival. B、Their rainy seasons are almost at the same time. C、They are cheap and quiet to visit in November. D、They are hot all day and night in November.(3)、Why does Raja Ampat fail to become hot popular?A、It has few attractions. B、It is costly and controlled. C、It doesn't offer accommodation. D、It is dangerous with hidden lakes. -

11、How to Learn Faster
Learning and remembering new knowledge or information completely takes time, but don't you wish there is an easier way to remember it?.
Read it out loud
Hearing yourself repeat the information helps you remember it easier..Go slowly through the text so you don't skip over anything important. Try pointing at the words as you read them to help you to remember even better. The more you read the information loud, the easier you can remember it.
Quiz(测验) yourself so you see what topics you still need to review. After you've read through or practiced something, test your memory by reciting everything you just learned. If you need to remember keywords or phrases, try writing down their definitions without looking them up.
Take handwritten notes
You're more likely to remember something you've written down. If you're in a class, listen carefully and write down the keywords and phrases. If you're learning something online or from a book, rewrite what you read.
Teach the information to someone else
Explaining something helps you keep the main points. Have one of your friends listen to you as you try to teach them the subject you've been learning..Since you have to actively recall the information you're teaching, it's beneficial for you to learn and remember the information.

12、Working on a farm and taking care of crops can be hot, time-consuming and difficult. Engineers have long wanted to build robots to lighten the load. But it has proved a difficult task. Robots that walk or roll along the ground can step on the easily damaged plants heavily. And they have to stop working when rain turns fields muddy. "Tarzan", however, could deal with some of those challenges.
Jonathan Rogers is a robotics expert at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. When it comes to a farm environment, he realized robots would face many problems. "Many robots tend to get twisted(弯曲的) together or get stuck,"he says. What's more, he notes, "It's very hard to leave them out for long periods without a human helping them."
What if the robot could move above the crops? Jonathan Rogers says, "The sloths(树懒)move from tree branch to tree branch to avoid having to walk around the forest floor. "Then his team set out to design a robot that could swing hand to hand along wires hung above the field. He named their invention Tarzan after the jungle-swinging character in a movie.
Tarzan is not the first swinging robot. Mark Spong, a robotics researcher at the University of Texas at Dallas notes that some teams have built robots that do gymnastics or copy mammals. But he says he admires Tarzan for its using swinging movement to save energy and the idea of building a wire structure to move around above crops.
Rogers first predicted that Tarzan could help farmers monitor crops with sensors (传感器) and cameras. But he also said future robots might take water to a particularly thirsty plant or fertilize one that needs nutritional support. And adding a third "hand"could allow such a robot to harvest fruits and vegetables. Finally the robot could move off the farm and into the city, helping deal with the traffic and security.
(1)、What worried the engineers when they built the farm robots?A、They took up too much space. B、They made the farming process slow. C、They had difficulty exploring in fields. D、They caused certain damage to crops.(2)、What does Jonathan Rogers think about most farm robots?A、They take much time to make. B、They get out of date more easily. C、They depend too much on people. D、They get used to the environment slowly.(3)、What attracts Mark Spong most about Tarzan?A、Its strong wings. B、Its low cost C、Its creative design D、Its powerful engine.(4)、How did Jonathan Rogers feel about Tarzan's future?A、It could be found everywhere. B、It could be put into more practical uses. C、It could be used to do all the farm work. D、It could be popular with working people in cities. -
13、It was a cold winter. The wind blew all night and the snow was blinding. When morning came, my three children and I got up and made our way to the windows. As we looked out of the window, we saw that the henhouse was gone. Our three hens had been blown away.
I looked at the emptiness outside Then I saw all three chickens sitting around the edge of a white bucket. How was this strong wind not blowing them into the field beyond? I quickly put on my long heavy winter coat and large boots.
I shouted at the wind as it blew. I was alone, struggling in the snow. My children stared out of the window into the vast white sea of snow, their eyes focused for any sign of movement. Outside I heard the sound of my boots as I struggled through the snow.
The snow circling around me, I slowly made my way to the soft cluck-cluck-cluck sound my hens always made. When I reached them, I saw that their little feet were holding on to the edge of the bucket, heads bent (弯下) forward and away from the wind. I gently lifted each hen and put it carefully into the warm inside. Then I began the freezing walk back to the small shed (棚子) directly behind our house. One by one I laid my chickens on the cold floor, and they began to cluck softly.
As I shut the shed doors, my eyes went directly to the window where my children were watching. They jumped up and down cheering, and so did I! I wasn't some superman from movies. I was simply a mom, but the look on my children's faces told me that they thought I was a hero mom.
(1)、How did the author feel when seeing three chickens sitting around a bucket?A、Frightened. B、Regretful. C、Unbelievable. D、Curious.(2)、How did the author reach the hens?A、By shouting at the henhouse. B、By following the sound of the hens. C、By searching for the white bucket. 14、Snowboarding genius Su Yiming made a name for himself by winning China's first Olympic gold in the sport on Tuesday. By cleanly stomping back-to-back 1800 tricks, the teenager landedthe biggest prize so far in his young career — gold in the men's Big Air at the Beijing Winter Olympics. The notable achievement realized a childhood dream to reach the peak of the sport, which he began to learn at the age of 4.
Now with two shinning medals hung around his neck, the 17-year-old described his superb Olympic debut (首秀) as an unbelievable experience that has made all his sacrifices worthwhile. "This feels so impossible that I've finally accomplished what I've dreamed of since I was little," said an emotional Su.
Over the past four years, Su has combined his talent with hard work to produce one of the swiftest rises to prominence the sport has ever seen. When the Shougang Big Air venue hosted its first international event, Su was an unknown qualifier, who didn't even make the final runs. Just over two years later, Su is the name on everyone's lips at the venue s Olympic debut — drawing the whole nation's attention to the sport he loves.
"The biggest motivation (动力) for me is my love for snowboarding," Su said, when asked about the secret to his success. "In snowboarding, I feel like I can show my own style and creativity. Every time I ride my board, it's always a joyful moment. I hope through my experience, I can inspire more young people to get interested in the sport."
Su, a former child actor who featured in action movies, said the Olympic gold will encourage him to seek for more breakthroughs — even beyond his athletic career.
"I enjoy snowboarding just as much as I enjoy acting," said Su, who turns 18 on Friday. "I think I still have a lot of possibilities to explore in my future career either in snowboarding or in acting. But now I just want to enjoy the moment and celebrate it as the best possible birthday gift."

It was a beautiful sunny day when the moving van pulled onto the tree-lined street. Mark and Mindy stepped out of the van and looked at their new home with pride. They had both been saving for a long time to purchase their first house together and were very excited to go on a new venture.
Within an hour they had unloaded a number of boxes and were pleased with their progress. The sky had begun to darken slightly, but the weather was still pleasant. Then Mindy heard it - even felt it. There was a large clap of thunder and then a bolt of lightning. Mindy and Mark immediately froze and looked at each other, then looked at the boxes scattered on their lawn. They hastily raced to get their belongings indoors, but not before getting caught in heavy rain.
The couple stood in their living room, wet from head to toe, surrounded by what were now very wet boxes. Then, Mark noticed a pool of water in the hallway.
He went to inspect (检查) and found that there was water dripping from the ceiling. "We can have someone fix it," Mindy said. "I'll grab a bucket to catch the water for now."
A moment later, Mark heard a scream and raced into the kitchen just in time to see a mouse running across the floor. Mindy was frozen with fright.
"Don't worry. We can take care of that!" Mark said, trying to sound as reassuring (安心的) as possible. "Let's go unpack some of the boxes. That will make us feel better."
Mark and Mindy made their way to the living room, but when they opened a box holding their kitchen utensils (器皿) and dishes, they found that all of their plates, bowls and cups were broken. They looked at each other in dismay.
"What do we do now?" Mindy asked.
Their first day in their new home was not turning out to be the joyous occasion they had expected. Just then, they both heard a noise. There was a knock at the door.
