1、When I entered senior high school as a freshman, English became my biggest source of frustration and embarrassment. My scores never climbed above 80 out of 150, leaving me at the bottom of the class. Classmates often shot me disdainful glances when English papers were handed out, and some even joked that I was "a lost cause" in languages. Teachers shook their heads at my grades, and I grew increasingly inferior, hiding my homework whenever others passed by and avoiding oral English activities like the plague. I tried self-study a few times, but the words felt like meaningless symbols and grammar rules a tangled mess—soon, I gave up, convinced I'd never master the language.
Everything shifted when Lily joined our class in the second semester. Bright and gentle, she was a top student with English scores consistently in the grade's top 5. Her smooth pronunciation and insightful answers in class left everyone impressed, but what touched me most was her kindness. Once, after I scored a mere 73 on a test and sat alone in despair, she walked over softly. "Don't give up," she said, pointing out my mistakes and explaining grammar points patiently. Staring into her warm eyes, I felt a sudden urge to narrow the gap between us—not just to win her favor, but to prove I could stand beside someone as excellent as her.
I threw myself into English with unshakable resolve. Starting with vocabulary, I bought a notebook and wrote down every difficult word repeatedly—sometimes 400 times a day until my fingers ached. I stayed up late reading simple English articles, looked up every unknown word, and copied model essays to learn sentence structures. I also mustered the courage to ask Lily for help after class, she always recommended useful resources and encouraged me when I stumbled. There were setbacks: mock exams with little progress, classmates mocking my "foolish pursuit," and nights I wanted to quit. But the thought of Lily's belief in me kept me going.
Two years of relentless effort paid off. My scores rose steadily, and by senior year, I was scoring over 120 in mock exams. In the college entrance examination, I achieved 125-far beyond my wildest dreams as a freshman. When I told Lily, she smiled and said, "I always knew you could do it." Looking back, Lily was the spark that ignited my motivation, but the real victory was overcoming my own doubts. I learned that no matter how tough the start, persistence and self-belief can turn even the most impossible goals into reality.

Most people think that procrastination (拖延症) is a negative habit. But people like me who routinely put off doing assignments, are likely to defend our "slower" approach to getting tasks done.
I'm the only procrastination in my family. My parents and sister were all born with the "do it right now" gift. They are always in a rush, as if closely rushed by an invisible deadline. Personally, I prefer a more relaxed pace. When my parents voiced their concern about my tendencies, saying "Don't put off until tomorrow what you can do today," "No way!" I responded, confidently presenting my research as a defense. It said people procrastinated when they need to solve a problem or commit to a topic or project. In these cases, delaying a decision can be beneficial. This was because our minds continue to reflect on problems even when we were not actively thinking about them, which could lead to more creative solutions. My findings filled me with satisfaction and pride. My method of getting things done was just as good as my sister's…or so I thought.
At school we'd been talking about architecture and design. As part of the final assessment my teacher Mr. Smith announced an exciting project that each student would have a month to complete. We were expected to choose our materials, construct a small building and make use of things we had learned in class. Not only would the winners receive extra credit, but the winning constructions would be proudly displayed in the cafeteria. "I have no clue how I could get it done," my friend Nate sighed in despair. I didn't say anything. Not because I shared his anxiety but because I was not nervous at all. I loved hands-on projects! Picturing my brilliant work exhibited in the cafeteria, I was fully convinced that I would definitely produce something that could impress everyone. So relaxed was I that I didn't give it a second thought for weeks.

5、It's obvious that our society favors the outgoing personality, so being introverted (内向的) has always been seen as something that needs to be "fixed". However, there is no fault in being introverted.
Introverts have hidden powers.. While others are busy chatting, introverts observe things most-people are unaware of. Sometimes we can even read people. While it may seem introverts are always zoned out, we're actually analyzing and thinking of creative ideas to one day share with you.
Introverts also keep the world balanced. In a world that can't stop talking, the ability to listen to what each other has to say is an important virtue that will assist us in building peaceful relationships of understanding.. By listening to whatever people pour out, introverts help maintain the order of the world.
Introverts can self-recharge. Though the outgoing may gain their energy through mixing in crowds, introverts are self-recharging powerhouses.. Their energy is found through loneliness.
. In the noise of chatterboxes, their voices often get drowned out. There's nothing more disappointing to an introvert than finally taking advantage of a moment to speak, only to be interrupted by the extroverts (外向者). While extroverts may speak every thought that comes to mind, an introvert will choose their thoughts carefully and only speak of the ones they think their best to share. So next time, all you have to do is to be willing to listen.
A. Unluckily, introverts are faced with a big challenge.
B. And this is exactly what our introverts are born with.
C. Introverts have shown the potential to be great leaders.
D. Extroverted people would have no one to listen to them.
E. Instead, we should appreciate introverts for various reasons.
F. They don't need to constantly put themselves out there to be lively.
G. Just because we introverts don't say much doesn't always mean we're clueless.

6、The climate crisis may lead the human race to shrink in size, as mammals with smaller frames appear better able to deal with rising global temperatures, a leading fossil expert has said.
Professor Steve Brusatte, a palaeontologist at the University of Edinburgh, suggested that the way in which other mammals have previously responded to periods of climate change could offer an insight into humans' future. He compared the potential problem of people as similar to that of early horses, which became smaller in body size as temperatures rose around 55 million years ago.
Writing in The Rise and Reign of the Mammals, Brusatte notes that animals in warmer parts of the world today are often smaller than those in colder areas, an ecological principle known as Bergmann's rule. "The reasons are not entirely understood, but it is probably, in part, because smaller animals have a higher surface area relative to their volume than bigger animals and can thus improve the dissipation of the extra heat," he writes.
Brusatte said that becoming smaller was "a common way that mammals deal with climate change". He added, "That's not to say every species of mammal would get smaller, but it seems to be a common survival trick of mammals when temperatures rise pretty quickly. That does raise the question: If temperatures do rise really quickly, might humans get smaller? And I think that's certainly reasonable."
However, not all experts agree that rising temperature causes mammals to shrink. Professor Adrian Lister, of the Natural History Museum in London, said the relationship shown by the recent human remains study is weak. "We are not really controlled by natural selection," he said. "If that was going to happen, you'd need to find large people dying before they could reproduce because of climate warming. That is not happening in today's world. We wear clothes, we have got heating, we have got air conditioning if it is too hot."
(1)、How do mammals cope with climate change according to Brusatte?A、Moving to colder regions. B、Reducing their body size. C、Losing their weight. D、Adapting their diet.(2)、What does the underlined word "dissipation" in Paragraph 3 mean?A、Exchange. B、Formation. C、Absorption. D、Emission.(3)、What is Adrian Lister's attitude towards the recent study?A、Worried. B、Objective. C、Skeptical. D、Approving.(4)、What is the best title of this text?A、The Threat of Climate Change to Human Survival B、The Impact of Climate Change on Mammal Body Sizes C、The Evolutionary Trends in Mammal Body Sizes D、The Adaptive Strategies of Mammals to Climate Change -
7、Even if you haven't held a conversation with Siri or Alexa, you've likely encountered a chatbot online. They often appear in a chat window that pops up with a friendly greeting: Thank you for visiting our site. How can I help you today? Depending on the site, the chatbot is programmed to respond accordingly and even ask follow-up questions.
Chatbots communicate through speech or text. Both rely on artificial intelligence technologies like machine learning and natural language processing (NLP), which is a branch of artificial intelligence that teaches machines to read, analyze and interpret human language. This technology gives chatbots a baseline for understanding language structure and meaning. NLP, in essence, allows the computer to understand what you are asking and how to appropriately respond.
With developments in deep learning and reinforcement learning, chatbots can interpret more complexities in language and improve the dynamic nature of conversation between human and machine. Essentially, a chatbot tries to match what you've asked to an intent that it understands. The more a chatbot communicates with you, the more it understands and the more it learns to communicate like you and others with similar questions. Your positive responses reinforce its answers, and then it uses those answers again.
From customer service chatbots online to personal assistants in our homes, chatbots have started to enter our lives. In almost every industry, companies are using chatbots to help customers easily navigate their websites, answer simple questions and direct people to the relevant points of contact. Personal assistants like Siri and Alexa are designed to respond to a wide range of scenarios and queries, from current weather and news updates to personal calendars, music selections and random questions.

11、Homework has long been tied to school. But with the way of learning shifted, it's fair to ask: Is homework still relevant, or a leftover from a different time?
The idea of homework goes back a long way. Historians trace it to ancient Rome. Pliny the Younger, a teacher around AD 61-113, encouraged students to practice speaking at home. Homework evolved slowly over the centuries. In the U.S., it grew common in the early 20th century. In 1957, American schools piled on homework to raise academic demands. By the 1980s, it was seen as key to academic success.
For high schoolers, homework links to academic performance. But younger kids seem to gain little from traditional homework. Furthermore, students who are responsible and supported at home are most likely to complete assignments and benefit from them. For students from lower-income families who might lack internet access, homework can actually widen the achievement gap.
Then everything changed. As educators recognized the limitations of passive, one-size-fits-all tasks in encouraging genuine understanding and student engagement, traditional worksheets and reading logs gave way to project-based assignments or online lessons, clouding the line between homework and classwork. However, just assigning tasks wasn't enough.
So, what now? Keep, change, or get rid of it? It all comes down to how it's used. When it's just something to keep kids busy, it doesn't do much. But when thoughtful, clear, and actually fitting what a student needs, it has its place. In a world where information is instant, the purpose of homework needs a fresh look.
A. The concept, however, faded significantly during the Middle Ages.
B. The question of whether homework actually helps students is tricky.
C. The thing is, homework isn't automatically good or bad.
D. Furthermore, access to reliable internet became a critical factor.
E. It took on a more formal role during the Industrial Revolution.
F. Ask students what school's like, and you'll hear about tests, teachers and homework.
G. Without engagement, feedback, and support, homework lost its effectiveness.

12、A research team from the University of California has developed a new type of fully biodegradable plastic derived from seaweed, offering a promising solution to the global plastic pollution crisis. The findings, published in a leading scientific journal in September 2025, demonstrate that this innovative material decomposes completely in natural environments within weeks, unlike conventional plastics that persist for centuries.
The research process involved extracting specific polymers from common brown seaweed and modifying them to create a durable yet flexible material. Laboratory tests confirmed that the new bioplastic possesses strength comparable to traditional plastic packaging. Most significantly, when exposed to soil or seawater, it breaks down into harmless organic matter through natural microbial activity. Field experiments showed complete decomposition within four to eight weeks, leaving no microplastic residues. The production method is also energy-efficient, requiring 30% less energy than conventional plastic manufacturing.
Dr. Emily Chen, the lead researcher, expressed cautious optimism about the potential impact. "This material could revolutionize packaging industries, particularly for food and consumer goods," she stated. However, she acknowledged the challenges ahead, noting that "scaling up production while maintaining cost competitiveness with established plastics remains a significant hurdle." Several major companies have already shown interest in adopting this technology, recognizing both its environmental benefits and growing consumer demand for sustainable products. The team is now focusing on optimizing the material for various commercial applications and conducting further tests to ensure its safety and durability meet industry standards.

13、Access to safe drinking water is a basic need for every household, yet traditional water treatment often fails to address tiny pollutants or user oversight. On September 18, 2025, a breakthrough emerged at the China Home Technology Expo in Guangzhou: "QingShui-1," a smart water purifier developed by South China University of Technology, which redefines home water safety with innovative technology.
Traditional purifiers struggle with two critical flaws: they cannot filter particles smaller than 0.01 micron, such as certain heavy metals, and users often forget to replace filter elements. The QingShui-1 team targeted these gaps with a multi-layer composite filter made of activated carbon and ceramic. Laboratory tests confirm it removes 99.8% of heavy metals and 99.5% of bacteria, trapping particles as small as 0.001 micron.
What sets it apart is smart connectivity. Linked to a WeChat mini-program, the device sends real-time alerts when the filter element nears expiration, and users can order replacements directly through the app. This solves the long-standing problem of delayed maintenance that undermines water safety.
Installation and usability were also prioritized. Its compact size fits under most kitchen sinks, and it connects to standard faucets in 5 minutes — no professional help needed. A month-long trial with 500 families in Guangzhou and Shanghai yielded positive feedback. "I used to stress about my baby's drinking water," said Ms. Chen, a participant. "Now I check quality on my phone anytime — it's such a relief."
Mass production is scheduled for December 2025, with a price 20% lower than imported alternatives. This innovation not only enhances household water safety but also makes advanced treatment technology accessible to ordinary families, reflecting China's practical approach to solving daily life challenges.

B、To introduce a new concept for home water safety by technological innovation. C、To showcase the research capabilities of South China University of Technology. D、To compete with traditional water purifiers in terms of pricing.(2)、What makes QingShui-1 superior to traditional water purifiers?A、It removes 99.8% of bacteria and filters 0.01-micron particles. B、It costs 20% less than all imported purifiers and works at high temps. C、It fits all kitchen sinks and needs no professional installation. D、It connects to phones for alerts and traps ultra-tiny pollutants.(3)、What can we infer from Ms. Chen's words?A、She no longer worries about her baby's drinking water safety. B、The purifier has improved her baby's drinking habits. C、She doubts the accuracy of the app's water quality data. D、She found the installation more complex than expected.(4)、Which is the most suitable title for the passage?A、WeChat Mini-Programs: A New Tool for Home Maintenance B、QingShui-1: A September 2025 Innovation in Home Water Safety C、Breakthroughs in China's 2025 Home Appliance Technology D、How to Choose a Cost-Effective Water Purifier for Families -

On the first morning of second grade, Jared remembered five things he didn't like about school; Jessica, lining up, maths, spelling, and reading aloud. Jared wanted to stay home, but his mom sent him anyway. He had to sit next to Jessica.
At reading time, Mrs. Thomas asked Jared to read. Reading aloud always made Jared nervous. As he picked up the book, his hands shook. Words were not clear. "He can't read," Jessica said, "I didn't call on you, did I?" asked Mrs. Thomas. "No, but I'll read." Jared made a face They were asked to stay outside the classroom for a time-out (暂停), During the period, Jessica whispered to him, "When Mom brings my kittens (小猫) to school, don't even think about touching them."
The four kittens arrived in a box covered with a piece of screen. Everyone except Jared held them. Jared had nothing to do but practice spelling. When he sharpened his pencil, he looked into the tiny box. "Don't want to touch my kittens!" Jessica shouted. "Stupid kittens," Jared said. After the second class, almost the whole class wanted to play with the kittens. Then Philip said, "Hey, where are the kittens?" The box was empty. "Oh no!" Jessica said, "Jared, did you take them?" Jared shook his head, thinking they must have pushed up the lid (盖子). "He said they were stupid." Jessica told Mrs. Thomas. "I didn't mean it" Jared's face turned red.
"Look at the radiator (散热器)!" Philip said. A Tiny gray face rose from under the radiator cover. "Kitty, kitty," Mrs. Thomas said. The face disappeared. "If we ignore them, maybe they'll come out. At least the heat isn't on." Instead of practicing spelling, Jared watched the radiator. Soon, two faces and a tiny head appeared. Alex yelled, "Kitten!" The kitten was out of sight again. Jessica cried.
