1、When I was ten years old, I learned that trusting can be risky, especially with water and my father. On hot summer days, we would play in the pool. My father wanted me to learn to swim and would say, "Put your head under the water, it's not1." But I was always afraid of what was2 in the deep water. One day, while I was looking at a bird, my father quickly put my head under the water. It was scary at first, but soon I was back up, breathing again. It was a (n)3 I never forgot.
I4 I would never believe my father any more. Two years later, my family went snorkeling (浮潜) in the Atlantic Ocean. When we were ready to start snorkeling, my father5 me at first, but gradually I couldn't feel his hands and I was6 in the open ocean. Suddenly, I completely forgot how to operate my snorkel, breathe, and swim.
Struggling in the water, I felt greatly7 when my father swam towards me. He steadied me and8 me to stay calm and breathe slowly. With his reassuring9, I gradually regained control and continued my10. However, as we swam back, a strong11 swirled (使打漩) me suddenly and I was losing my consciousness. Noticing this, my father took my hand12, trying to lift me to the boat. When I came to myself, I was told that my father's knee was cut bleeding by something sharp and I felt my throat13.
Years later, I still see the scar on my father's knee. It's a (n)14 of his deep love in that strong current. Meanwhile, it emphasizes the importance of15 those who truly care for us.

2、You may have grown up living with lots of siblings, or this may be your first time sharing your living space with someone else. While having a roommate inevitably has its challenges, it can also be a great part of your college experience.
Respect your roommate's stuff
This may seem simple, but it's probably one of the biggest reasons why roommates experience conflict. Don't take it for granted that he'll not mind if you take his cleats (钉鞋) for a quick soccer game? Don't borrow, use, or take anything without getting permission first.
Don't go into your roommate relationship thinking that you are going to be best friends for the time you're at school. It may happen, but expecting it sets both of you up for trouble. You should be friendly with your roommate but also make sure you have your own social circles.
Stay open to change
You should expect to learn and grow and change during your time at school. As the semester progresses, realize things will change for both of you. Be comfortable addressing things that unexpectedly come up, setting new rules, and being flexible to your changing environment.
No matter what your relationship is at the end of the year, you can take comfort knowing you acted like an adult and treated your roommate with respect.
A. However, you just cross the line.
B. Make friends to promote your relationship.
C. Be friendly, without expecting to be best friends.
D. And the same should happen to your roommate.
E. Treat your roommate like you'd like to be treated.
F. Don't think you are not bothering others because you are roommates.
G. Follow the tips below and your roommate relationships can be quite harmonious.

3、Enjoying a juicy watermelon is one of summer's greatest pleasures, particularly when you don't have to avoid any seeds. Indeed, humans have adapted many fruits to be seedless in search of a more pleasant eating experience.
The navel orange (a sweet orange that is usually seedless), for example, came about after a random genetic mutation (随机的基因突变) produced a single branch with seedless fruit long ago. Cuttings of the branch were joined to other trees, and today, all of the world's navel oranges are copies of this original. A similar discovery led to seedless grapes, which are thought to first appear in ancient Rome before making their way to the Americas in the 1870s.
Scientists have a few guesses about why plants might have developed these abilities. For one, plants can hybridize (杂交) more easily than some kinds of animals, and hybridization unlocks the new potential. Even if some combinations don't pan out, researchers have documented examples of "hybrid advantage", in which a hybrid is fitter than either of its parents. Lastly, because the purpose of fruit is to draw animals near to help spread their seeds, parthenocarpy, the production of fruits without fertilization (受精), may ultimately allow trees to produce more fruit at a lower energetic cost if they don't need to make seeds, too.
Regardless of why seedless fruits exist, they represent an interesting thought experiment, according to Stacey Smith, a plant evolutionary biologist at the University of Colorado Boulder. On the one hand, many are unable to continue surviving without human involvement, but on the other hand they're also wildly successful for that same reason. There are very few, if any, wild navel oranges, and yet it's estimated that California will produce 76 million cartons of them this year alone.
"My personal take is that all plants under human care have won in some sense, because they don't have to make more of themselves. We do it for them," Smith told Live Science. "Just because they're not reproducing sexually and making seeds, who cares? We will never stop eating watermelons, and being able to make seedless ones just means we eat more watermelons."
(1)、What is the similarity between the orange and grape mentioned in the text?A、Being native to ancient Rome. B、Being seedless due to genetic change. C、Being grown from seeds rather than cuttings. D、Being joined to other plants for a sweeter taste.(2)、What does the underlined phrase "pan out" in paragraph 3 probably mean?A、Die out. B、Fall through. C、Work out. D、Come apart.(3)、Why is the existence of seedless fruits considered a thought experiment?A、It contributes to the balance of nature. B、People still have doubts regarding seedless fruits. C、Seedless fruits have a high demand but limited production. D、It inspires thinking on natural selection and human activity.(4)、What is the best title of the text?A、The Journey of Seedless Fruits: From Mutation to Market B、Seedless Fruits: A Human-Aided Evolutionary Wonder C、Genetic Mutations: The Only Way to Create Seedless Fruits D、Hybridization: The Key to Seedless Fruits'Success -
4、Imagine the roadways where nearly all serious accidents can be avoided, and trucks can transport goods around the clock without needing to stop for sleep. Applications for advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) will replace the average human reaction time, lowering it from 1.6 seconds to just 0.5 seconds, saving countless lives in the process.
The driverless future of autonomous vehicles (AV) is set to transform society by reinventing (重塑) the transportation industry and changing consumer behaviors forever. Yet, the share of consumers who support government regulation of fully self-driving cars has declined 15% over the past year, and trust in the safety of autonomous vehicles is down 5%. To address these ongoing safety concerns, more must be done.
Autonomous vehicles should not be regulated by the same rules that govern standard passenger vehicles because those regulations do not address the unique safety challenges for AVs. To address these concerns, the industry will need to continue building public trust through the improved performance of AV systems, especially in controlled environments.
Reaching a totally hands-off and eyes-off autonomous driving experience will require a range of next-generation technologies that are still being developed. Automakers will continue to increase the safety of autonomous vehicles by applying new technologies such as artificial intelligence and machine learning to improve the performance of sensors that use radio and light waves to help detect road users in all weather conditions.
The technical brain of an AV system relies on software systems that actively protect passengers. As this market grows, costs will steadily fall for these new sensors and high-performance computers, just as safety standards continue to progress around the country and the world. To help build confidence in AVs, the industry will need to generate a common set of testing standards, similar to crash safety standards, that AV developers can evaluate their systems against.
As autonomous driving evolves, the road to a driverless future still holds many twists and turns ahead. It should be an exciting and wild ride for years to come as the auto industry reinvents itself with ever-increasing levels of automation.
(1)、What make consumers still hesitant about the application of AV?A、Costly operating systems. B、Government regulations. C、Potential safety concerns. D、Complicated technologies.(2)、What can we learn from paragraph 3?A、AVs fail to follow standard regulations. B、Tailored rules are needed for AVs. C、Public trust in AVs is difficult to earn. D、AVs should be tested on public roads.(3)、How can the public's trust in AVs be improved?A、By integrating existing technologies. B、By limiting their maximum speed. C、By developing a reliable testing system. D、By minimizing the cost of sensors.(4)、What is the writer's attitude towards the future of AVs?A、Skeptical and concerned. B、Cautious yet optimistic. C、Worried and reserved. D、Pessimistic yet tolerant. -
5、Jameson Lobb, a 24-year-old investment banker and his college buddy, an artificial intelligence engineer named Raphael Jafri were squeezing in a lunchtime workout. Overlooking the East River, Lobb froze.
"Somebody's in the water," he said. Before Jafri could respond, Lobb climbed over the rail at the edge of the bank and leaped into the cold water without taking the time to remove his shoes. What Lobb had seen then was a person floating, lifeless. Jafri didn't need to see the victim. He just yanked off his shoes and swan-dived.
Approaching the unconscious victim, Lobb saw that it was a middle-aged man. He was big, around 200 pounds, respectably dressed and sinking fast. The rescuer dove, felt around, grasped the man and kicked upward until they both resurfaced. Jafri was there now. Treading water, the two friends floated the man on his back. As Jafri looped his arms around the man's shoulders and Lobb supported the hips and knees, the pair undertook the slog back to the bank. Their lungs heaved and their muscles burned as they pushed and pulled the immobile figure through the brisk, churning water.
They might have been dragging a corpse. The man's skin was blue, and neither Jafri nor Lobb detected any breathing. Suddenly the man stirred, breathing again, and faded back to near unconsciousness.
Both men, thoroughly exhausted from 15-plus minutes in the water, watched as rescue workers loaded the nearly drowned man into an ambulance and drove away. Lobb and Jafri never learned who he was, what became of him or how he'd fallen into the river.
In place of that knowledge, they have a story they get to tell now, another experience that has further cemented their bond. Lots of people were there that day, yet only the two of them jumped in the water — because, they say, they were the fittest people there and, so, had a moral responsibility.
"People always say ‘If your friend jumps off a cliff, are you jumping?' I think I answered that one." Jafri said, laughing.
(1)、What were the two guys doing when they found somebody was in the water?A、They were having lunch. B、They were taking exercise. C、They were swimming in the river. D、They were enjoying the beautiful sight.(2)、What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?A、The crowd's reaction to the incident. B、The rescue efforts to the victim. C、The victim's condition during the rescue. D、The techniques of rescuing the victim.(3)、Why did Lobb and Jafri jump in the water to rescue the drowning man that day?A、Because they were good swimmers. B、Because people on the banks were so indifferent. C、Because they thought they were morally responsible. D、Because the professional rescue workers did not arrive at the spot.(4)、According to the text, the two men can be best described as ________.A、ambitious and aggressive. B、energetic and confident. C、determined and perseverant. D、courageous and heroic. -

It was a chilly December evening, and the streets were filled with the hustle and bustle of holiday shoppers. Emily, a shy and thoughtful eight-year-old girl, was walking with her mother through the crowded mall. They were on their way to buy a Christmas gift for Emily's grandfather, who lived alone in a small town a few hours away. Emily's family wasn't very wealthy, but they always managed to find a way to make the holidays special. This year, Emily had saved up her money for months to buy her grandfather a present. As they walked through the mall, Emily's eyes were drawn to a shiny toy train set in the window of a toy store. She had always wanted one, but she knew that buying it for herself would be selfish. Suddenly, Emily stopped in front of a small jewelry shop. In the display case, she noticed a beautiful silver pocket watch, engraved with delicate flowers. "Mom, look at that watch! Grandpa would love it, "Emily said excitedly. Her mother smiled and nodded, knowing that the watch was a bit more expensive than they had planned, but seeing the sparkle in Emily's eyes, she decided to make it happen. After buying the watch, Emily and her mother continued their shopping, feeling happy and content.

In the journey of life, everyone (experience) various stages of growth. These stages shape (vt. 塑造) us into the individuals we become, (teach) us valuable lessons along the way. As a high school student, I have gone through many changes have led to my personal development.
One of the (important) experiences that impacted (v.影响) my growth was when I took part in community service project during the summer vacation. The project involved (v.涉及) volunteering at a local elderly care home. At first, I was quite reluctant (adj.不情愿的) and felt (comfortable) interacting with the senior citizens. , as I spent more time with them, listening to their stories and helping with small tasks, I began to understand the importance of compassion (n.同情) and empathy.
This experience not only taught me the value of serving others but also helped me develop better communication (skill). I learned how to communicate people from different generations and backgrounds. It was a turning point in my personal growth, making me a more considerate and respectful person.
Another important aspect of my growth has been my relationship with my family. Growing up, I often found myself at odds with (与……有分歧) my parents, especially regarding my studies and future plans. We used to have frequent arguments, and I felt(misunderstand). But as I grow older, I'm beginning to appreciate their perspective (n.视角,观点) and the reasons behind their concerns.

20、Self-management refers to self-control, which is a sign of inner power. There is no one easy or simple way to learn it, as everyone's mind works differently from another. Here's a list of ways to develop self-management skills.
Have goals
If something is important enough for you, it should be written down somewhere as your goal. Whether it is losing some weight or finishing a course with a certain grade, having a goal to reach is important for your motivation. You can certainly have more than one goal.
Set a schedule
Daily or weekly schedules give you more of a feeling that things are being accomplished (完成). Students who set schedules for themselves tend to be a bit more organized and aware of everything that is happening around them. For example, they usually like studying for a few hours now and then they can hang out with their friends later.
If you fail to hit your goals, adjust your goals to make up for your past mistakes. Take a step back and assess (评估) what you are doing and change it. It's okay not to reach goals, as long as you can acknowledge it honestly and make positive changes towards meeting your goals. But sometimes you just fall short. Knowing that it's okay and move on, you can pick yourself back up quickly.
The above self-management skills are essential for your development, which can truly change your future. So take it seriously and find ways to improve yourself!
A. Be honest to yourself
B. Assess yourself honestly
C. But there are certain things that work for most.
D. You can break it down to yearly, monthly, weekly, and even daily ones.
E. As long as you have a clear schedule, it's possible for you to achieve them all.
F. They're able to think in advance about what they need to accomplish now or later.
G. This step is especially hard because you want to feel good about yourself and achieve your goals.
