A wonderful experience happened to me this Saturday on my way to a mall. Two children ran towards me bottles in their hands, asking if I wanted to have bottled water. Reading is important. But the next step is making sure that you remember what you've read! You may have just read the text, but the ideas, concepts and images (形象) may fly right out of your head. Here are a few tricks for remembering what you read.

If the plot characters, or word usage is confusing for you, you likely won't be able to remember what you read. It's a bit like reading a foreign language. If you don't understand what you're reading, how would you remember it? But there are a few things you can do, like using a dictionary and looking up the difficult words.

● Are you connected?

Does a character remind you of a friend? Does the setting make you want to visit the place? Does the book inspire you, and make you want to read more? With some books, you may feel a connection right away. How willing are you to make the connections happen?

● Read it; hear it; be it!

Read the lines. Then, speak them out loud. And, put some character into the words. When he was writing his novels, Charles Dickens would act out the parts of the characters. He'd make faces in the mirror, and change his voice for each character.

● How often do you read?

If you read frequently. you'll likely have an-easier time with remembering what you' re reading and what you've read. As you make reading a regular part of your life, you'll make more connections, stay more focused and understand the text better. You'll learn to enjoy literature, as you remember what you read!

A. When the cultural distances are wide, some people feel anxious. They remain so homesick and feel so sad about being separated from their friends back home that they long to return, especially within the first year.

B. You may do some research on the cultural aspects of the new country such as the history, customs, and religious beliefs, rather than on what to see and where to go, so you may get prepared for a culture that is different from yours.

C. Besides, having trouble with the native language often makes them unwilling to communicate with other people. Actually, staying in a foreign country helps you to know more of the new culture.

D. Studying the language is also a great way to help bridge the gap between the cultures. The more of it is understood, the more of the new culture can be understood.

E. When you go to a foreign country, you often enter a new culture. The differences between cultures may make you feel stressed and you often find it difficult to adapt to the new surroundings, which is usually called "culture shock".

This is the idea of unplugged (不插电的) running, which is gaining steam in the fitness community. And recent research has shown that getting rid of your running watch, especially if it's a smartwatch or fitness tracker, could actually improve your workout — or at least your enjoyment of running.

"People used to have an interest in their sport and get enjoyment out of the sport, but now that's switching to the data," said Eoin Whelan, a senior lecturer at the National University of Ireland Galway. "They will compare themselves to people who are better than them, who are running faster or running longer. And in the end we know that makes them feel bad. "

Whelan also noted that people who are very dependent on smart watches or fitness trackers are more likely to skip their workouts if the batteries on their tracking devices are dead.

Instead, running watch-free is beneficial. Some professionals also have had success with leaving their watches at home. Welsh runner Steve Jones famously set a world record at the 1984 Chicago Marathon without wearing a watch. More recently, Olympic marathoner Trevor Hofbauer made headlines for winning the 2019 Canadian Marathon Championships without a watch.

"If you have too much information being fed to you in real time, it can kind of get in your head," Hofbauer said. "For me, the simpler, the better."

When we arrived at Haleakala National Park, we were advised to watch the early morning sunrise. I was lost in the sightseeing that afternoon so I could hardly wait to meet the sunrise. In the next morning we all jumped out of the bed very early at 3 o'clock and walked to the rocks by the seaside. In the first half an hour we imagined how wonderful it would be when the first light came out through the thick clouds and how soft it would be when the light touched our skin so we waited and waited. However, another half an hour later I gradually lost my patience since there was nothing but the cold darkness and I felt that I was frozen to death. But my friends were still extremely cheerful.

Nearly another one hour later, "Fantastic!" a word burst out from Judy and we all shouted to welcome the light orange greatness which is really unbelievable. Until today I dare say that it is the most impressive sunrise in my life. However, waiting in the morning darkness is also the one I cannot wipe out forever.

Waiting sometimes is really a hard thing for most of us as it needs patience and strong-willed determination, but what about the result after that? It might turn out to be pleasingly unbelievable and satisfied. So, it is really worthwhile to wait for the best.

When I was in middle school, my family moved to Seattle, where my parents started their new business — a small grocery store downstairs my house. As a girl of shy and reserved nature, I had to take a fresh start to fit into the sophisticated city life.

One sunny day, my school announced an exciting event, a talent show for the local food bank. Students were encouraged to showcase their unique talents in front of the public in the city hall on National Day. A buzz of excitement fed the school as everyone began preparing for the big day. Deep down, I felt a spark of curiosity and a desire to participate. However, my self-doubt held me back, "I don't have any special skills to share."

Days turned into weeks, and the talent show drew closer. I couldn't shake the upsetting feeling until one day, Emma, one of the most popular girls in my class, came to me while I was helping in the grocery store after class. "How about singing together in the talent show?" She grinned, "I heard you singing a tune, along the way back home. I can't help following you here." Gosh, I couldn't believe my ears. When it comes to foods that are more than worthy of being posted all over social media, Chinese sugar painting, a traditional Chinese form of folk art, deserves some time in the spotlight. Hot liquid sugar is used (create) two-dimensional figures like small animals. Sugar art is pretty popular children, but it's beautiful enough to interest anyone.

Hot sugar is poured from a small spoon onto a flat surface where the outline of the figure (draw) with a thick stream of sugar. Then (relative) thinner sugar is added to support the outline and fill in the figure of the body in a (combine) of zig-zags or other patterns, supported by a wooden stick. "Painting" artistic pieces from melted sugar (differ) from regular painting. Whether you're communicating in person or on the phone, being a good listener is an important part of any healthy relationship. If you've wondered whether you could be a better listener, the answer is almost certainly "yes". Making sure the people in your life feel truly heard is something that you can improve upon.

You appear more interested when you invite the speaker to give explanations, by asking them things that need more than a "yes" or "no" answer. "An open-ended question is an invitation for the other person to say more, and continue going deeper into their train of thought, versus (与……相对比) a close-ended question that invites a factual answer," Dr. Bobby explains.

What you're expressing through your body language is as important as what you say. It's about looking in someone's eyes, smiling and nodding. Showing with your face that you're following what someone is saying is really important. Remember that looking into your laptop camera is like making eye contact, while breaking it to look downward makes it appear that you're doing something else.

"People can be considered as poor listeners when they don't understand what the conversation is actually about on a high level." Dr. Bobby says.   Maybe they're really just wanting to express their bad feelings, or talk about their day. So don't try to give suggestions; just listen instead.

Dr. Russo first noticed bat buzzing a few years ago. The noise struck him as similar to the sound of some bees. He wondered whether bat buzzing was a form of mimicry which helped to scare off would-be predators.

To test this idea, he and his colleagues first recorded the buzzing that captured bats made. Then, with protective clothing, they began the more dangerous task of recording the buzzing made by different bees. Computer analysis revealed that bees' and bats' buzzing were, indeed, similar.

Then the researchers recruited several owls. They put the owls, one at a time, in an enclosure with branches for them to stay on, and two boxes with holes in them. They placed a loudspeaker alongside one of the boxes and, after the birds had settled in, broadcast through it five seconds of uninterrupted bat buzzing and a similar amount of insect buzzing three times in a row for each noise. As a control, they broadcast in like manner several non-buzzing sounds made by bats.

During the broadcasts and for five minutes thereafter, they videoed the owls. After analysis, the results were unequivocal. When they heard both the bat buzzing and the bee buzzing, the owls moved as far from the speakers as they could. In contrast, when the non-buzzing bat sounds were played, they crept closer.

Dr. Russo believes this is the first reported case of a mammal using auditory mimicry to scare away a predator. They strongly suspect, however, that it is not unique. Anecdotes suggest several birds also make buzzing noises when their nests are disturbed. And with the result of the experiment, he therefore predicts that auditory mimicry is far more widespread than currently realized.

Society pushes us to specialize, to become experts. This requires commitment to a particular occupation, branch of study or research. The drawback to being specialists     is we often come to know more and more about less and less. There is a great deal of pressure to master one's field. You may pursue training, degrees, or increasing levels of responsibility at work. Then you discover the pressure of having to keep up.

Some people seem willing to work around the clock in their narrow specialty. But such commitment can also weaken a sense of freedom. These specialists could work at the office until ten each night, then look back and realize they would have loved to have gone home and enjoyed the sweetness of their family and friends, or traveled to exciting places, meeting interesting people. Mastering one thing to the exclusion of others can hold back your true spirit.

Generalists, on the other hand, know a lot about a wide range of subjects and view the whole with all its connections. They are people of ability, talent, and enthusiasm who can bring their broad perspective into specific fields of expertise. The doctor who is also a poet and philosopher is a superior doctor, one who can give so much more to his patients than just good medical skills.

Things are connected. Let your expertise in one field fuel your passions in all related areas. Some of your interests may not appear to be connected but, once you explore their depths, you discover that they are. My editor Toni, who is also a writer, has edited several history books. She has decided to study Chinese history. Fascinated by the structural beauty of the Forbidden City as a painter, she is equally interested to learn more about Chinese philosophy. "I don't know where it will lead, but I'm excited I'm on this pursuit."

These expansions into new worlds help us by giving us new perspectives. We begin to see the interconnectedness of one thing to another in all aspects of our life, of ourselves and the universe. Develop broad, general knowledge and experience. The universe is all yours to explore and enjoy.
