My husband asked, in an unpleasant voice, what I wanted to do for my birthday. I told him that I wanted something special but didn't know what. He then asked if I wanted to go to the new restaurant, and I said no. He suggested going out with friends, and I also said no. Finally, he asked what I wanted. "Something special, so I don't just feel old," I answered. Maybe I could just get some hair dye (染发液) or some new skin cream. 

"Hmm," he disappeared into the garage. I've always thought garages were built for men so they had a place to think. 

With no party in sight, I decided to use my positive thinking. How to celebrate? I couldn't think of any event that would improve my attitude toward my birthday. I had no idea what I truly wanted or needed. 

Thanksgiving Day had always been my favorite celebration. I loved to give gifts to family and friends. And that's when I realized it. If I loved giving gifts, then I could do that for my birthday! Why not? This was how I came up with my annual Birthday Person. 

In the months before my birthday, I thought of all the people who had supported me. I searched for a small token (礼券) —a gift. Then I planned what I wanted to say. After writing my first rough draft, I got a clean sheet of paper that didn't have tearstains (泪痕) on it. And then I created the finished product and mailed it with my gift. There have been many tears involved in writing notes to my Birthday Person, tears of joy, tears of healing, tears shared on the giving and the receiving end.

The development of electric vehicles (EVs) is thriving (欣欣向荣的) in China. Chinese consumers now see owning an EV  a symbol of energy conservation. 

Last March, China sold a large number of cars, a lot of  were EVs or plug-in hybrids. This was a big increase compared to the previous year. The number of EVs in China  (be) very high now. Because oil prices are high, many Chinese people are choosing  (purchase) electric cars, which are better for the environment and cheaper to run. More people in China are buying EVs compared to the people in the US.

Ken Wilcox started working for a new company in Washington DC. While the company 1 well, his boss was what Wilcox describes as a "tyrant (暴君) ". Besides, Wilcox's closest friend was 2 .

If you are a first-time dog owner, suddenly having to take care of another little being can be difficult.  The first few weeks can be difficult for both you and your dog, but with some preparation and the right attitude, you can overcome any initial anxiety, and settle in to a rich, rewarding life together. 

Prepare your home for a canine companion. Taking some time to make sure your home is ready for a new inhabitant is important.  Where is your furry friend going to sleep? Are they going to be allowed free range of your home, or are some areas off-limits? Decide what the rules are going to be before you need to apply them. 

  At the very minimum, your dog should have a bed to sleep on, food and water bowls. Prepare enough food to get you through the first couple of days. Regarding food, it's always a good idea to get the same kind the dog has already been eating, so they have at least something familiar during the adjustment period. 

Bring the dog home.  To make everything go well, it's important to be mindful of the introductions. Introduce the dog to the space it is going to live in. Most dogs will be curious when they enter a new space, and want to sniff (闻) and look around. Be calm and let the dog explore. With very energetic dogs, the first tour can be done on a leash (链条) . If you have other pets in the home, it might be a good idea to keep them away at first.

D. Get the basic supplies and equipment ahead of time. 

E. The day you bring your dog home is a big day for everyone involved.

G. However, the benefits of adopting a dog usually make the responsibilities worthwhile. 

A leading company in the field of boat engines that run on electricity is working on a new type of bright-orange propeller (螺旋桨) made from reused plastic. This initiative is designed not only to cut down on the release of harmful gases from their future boat engines but also to help clean up the plastic mess in our oceans. 

According to a study by a group that cares about nature from 2022, a very small part of the huge amount of plastic trash made by people in the US in 2021 was changed into something new. The best year for recycling was 2014, but since then, things have gotten worse. This company wants to change that and says a lot of plastic trash ends up in our rivers and lakes, and then in the oceans. 

While some people are working on picking up plastic from the water, this company wants to stop plastic from getting into the water in the first place. They want to make it so that using recycled plastic is a viable solution to make new products and it makes financial sense. 

To do this, the company has set up a special team called the Advanced Engineering Team. Their job is to find new ways to make things that are good for the environment. One of their first jobs is to make a new kind of propeller that is good for the planet by using plastic that has already been used. The project director said, "Usually, when we start using new materials, we use just a little bit of recycled stuff. But we decided to do more. We made our test propellers all from plastic that was found in the ocean, and they did really well in our tests."

The leader of the company, who cares about the environment, says they're working on away to reuse plastic many times. They want to turn trash into something helpful. It's important that people are willing to buy products made from recycled plastic. The company believes that using recycled materials won't affect the quality of what they make. 

A Japanese producer of milk and dairy products came up with an innovative way of motivating kids to finish their milk bottles at lunch-decorating the bottles with comics. 

The producer has been supplying its products to local schools, but in recent years, the company has seen a significant drop in milk consumption. According to their research, the majority of high school students (around 65%) were not finishing their milk bottles at lunch, leading to unnecessary food waste. Not finishing their milk meant they might lack calcium and other valuable nutrients. However, as many parents know, getting teenagers to consume healthy foods isn't always easy. Fortunately, the company came up with an original and fun way to motivate students to finish their milk—comic bottles. 

If you're familiar with Japanese pop culture, comics are popular among people of different ages and backgrounds. This widespread appeal inspired the company to use comics as the main attraction for their milk bottles. They teamed up with a comic studio to produce an original and engaging comic series and printed it on their transparent milk bottles. Students could only read the comics after emptying the bottles of their nutritious content. The comics are printed on the bottles in white ink, so they are only visible once the bottles are emptied of milk. 

Although students technically don't have to drink the milk to access the comic art on the bottles, the company definitely deserves credit for their innovative solution to this delicate problem. 

In a corner of Zhengzhou, there is a cozy little restaurant owned by Uncle Zhang, a middle-aged man with a kind smile always on his face. His restaurant is famous for a special Single Meal, which is not just an ordinary meal but a gift filled with hope and care. 

There is a story behind this gift. Many years ago, Uncle Zhang worked in a distant place and life was tough. He often went hungry. During his most difficult times, a stranger extended a helping hand, giving him warmth and hope. This experience deeply moved Uncle Zhang, and he promised that if he ever had the chance, he would pass on this kindness. 

Years later, Uncle Zhang finally opened his own little restaurant. He decided to fulfill his promise by introducing the Single Meal. He instructed his staff that if anyone quietly said the code words—"Please give me a Single Meal", they should prepare a hot meal for that person without asking any questions. 

This act of kindness quickly spread through the community and touched many hearts. One sunny afternoon, with sunlight streaming through the restaurant windows, a young girl walked in. Her eyes were filled with helplessness and confusion. Guided by the staff, she sat in a corner and softly said the code words. The staff understood and soon brought her a hearty meal. 

The girl ate her meal with tears in her eyes, feeling a long-lost warmth. A few weeks later, she found a new job and returned to the restaurant. This time, she didn't use the code words. Instead, she prepaid for several Single Meals to help others in need. 

Uncle Zhang's small act of kindness had sparked a chain reaction, spreading warmth and hope throughout the community.
