Bruce, a parrot missing part of his beak (喙), creatively uses stones to clean feathers (羽毛), highlighting advanced intelligence in parrots.
Bruce lost the upper part of his beak in 2012 and was sent to live at a reserve in New Zealand. The defect made Bruce unable to search for food on his own, let alone keep his feathers clean with his beak. But in 2021, when comparative psychologist Bastos arrived at the reserve with colleagues to study parrots, zookeepers reported something strange:Bruce had seemingly figured out how to select and use small stones to clean his own feathers with his beak.
Over nine days, the team kept a close eye on Bruce, quickly taking, videos if he started cleaning his feathers. It turned out that Bruce had indeed invented his own way to do so, the researchers reported in Scientific Reports.
"It's crazy because the behavior was not from the wild, " Bastos says. When Bruce arrived at the reserve, he was too young to learn how to clean his feathers. And no other bird in the reserve uses stones in this way. "It seems like he just invented this tool use for himself, " she says.
Tool use is just one of parrots' many talents. They're famous for copying and even understanding human speech. Some species can also solve complex puzzles, like how to enter a covered rubbish bin or practice self-control.
For a concept as abstract (抽象的) as intelligence, it's challenging to develop a definition that applies across animals. Researchers often point to features once thought to make humans special—enhanced learning, memory, attention and movement control—as signs of advanced skills. However, many of these abilities can also be seen in parrots, as well as other animals like chimpanzees, dolphins and elephants.
"Parrots are our evolutionary (进化的) mirror image. These brilliant birds may teach us about how humanlike intelligence can appear, " behavioral ecologist Antone wrote in his 2022 book The Parrot in the Mirror. With powerful brains and a preference for words, these birds are "the very best example, " he writes, "of nature's 'other try' at humanlike intelligence. "
(1)、What does the underlined word " defect" in paragraph 2 mean?A、Disadvantage. B、Playfulness. C、Cruelty. D、Measure.(2)、Why did Bastos and her team watch Bruce closely?A、To observe how he lives alone. B、To find out how he gets food. C、To prove his ability to defend himself. D、To confirm his reported behavior.(3)、What can be known concerning the parrots?A、They do well in critical thinking. B、They're born skillful at using tools. C、They can complete complicated tasks. D、They can't match other animals in memory.(4)、What's the significance of studying the parrots?A、Offering an insight into human behavior. B、Helping further research other species of birds. C、Learning more about parrots' living environment. D、Giving reference for the evolution of humanlike intelligence. -

The hens look up at me from their nesting boxes. They seem slightly annoyed but unsurprised. A child runs up, pushes one of the chickens aside, and snatches two eggs. Around me, a half-dozen more children and adults collect eggs while a half-dozen others hand-feed dried mealworms to birds flocking around our ankles. I reach for an egg from an empty nest. There is something perfect about the way it fits warmly in the palm of my hand before I transfer it into a pretty wire basket provided to me by my hosts.
The egg harvest is a brief, carefully designed agritourism experience offering an experience of the labor rather than just having a bite of food. Snatching a few eggs and uprooting a few vegetables on the farm tour donˈt constitute a full dayˈs work, but it is also a useful reminder that food doesnˈt just magically appear on restaurant plates and grocery store shelves. Of course, visitors can take those eggs home or bring them to the on-farm restaurant, Clay, where a chef will use them to prepare breakfast.
A few centuries of industrialization, urbanization, and globalization have collected people into cities, but the attraction of the countryside has always remained. In the new urban-centered world, enterprising farmers have found plenty of opportunities to sell their rural lifestyle along with their crops. Italy promoted the modern model for combining agriculture and tourism in the wake of World War Ⅱ, when the national government encouraged rural populations to continue producing food rather than move to urban areas in search of more profitable jobs.
Agritourism acts as an umbrella term for a wide variety of activities that take place on farms, including farmstays, where guests sleep on-site. For varying investments of time, energy, and money, anyone can engage in our farming system, giving consumers a peek behind the farm-to-table world.
(1)、Why does the author describe children and adults collecting eggs in the beginning?A、To introduce agritourism. B、To describe the use of eggs. C、To show the innocence of the children. D、To emphasize the happiness of the children and adults.(2)、What is accessible to consumers in agritourism activities?A、Engaging in planting vegetables in person. B、Doing some simple but meaningful farm-work. C、Enjoying some self-made egg products on the farm. D、Clarifying the farm-to-table concept through practice.(3)、What can you learn from the last two paragraphs?A、The appeal of rural life gradually fade away due to industrialization. B、The desire to search for more well-paid jobs accelerated the speed of agritourism. C、Italian governmentˈs calls contributed a lot to the trend of moving from villages to cities. D、Promising farmers were dedicated to promoting their lifestyle along with agricultural products.(4)、What is the authorˈs attitude toward agritourism?A、Doubtful. B、Dismissive. C、Supportive. D、Sympathetic. -

Where does the meat on our table come from? It usually comes from livestock like chickens and cows. But did you know that meat can also be made in a lab? US company JUST has announced that lab-grown meat could be on some restaurant menus in the United States and Asia by the end of 2018, The Independent reported.
"These meats include chicken nuggets (鸡块), sausage and foie gras (鹅肝酱), " Josh Tetrick, CEO of JUST, told The Independent. Lab meat is sometimes referred to as "clean meat". It is made using the stem cells (干细胞) of living livestock. The cells need to be grown in a lab for a few weeks. For example, making a hamburger patty (肉饼) takes about nine weeks, CNN reported. This is faster than raising a cow, which usually takes over 20 weeks.
The first clean meat was a beef burger that was produced in 2013, but it was said to taste quite dry. How does clean meat taste now? Clean meat supporters told CNN that they think it tastes just like traditional meat.
Clean meat has other advantages. It is healthier than traditional meat. Meat producers can control what type of fat goes into the meat. They can produce clean meat that contains healthy fats, such as omega-3 fatty acids (脂肪酸). This kind of fat is good for people's hearts.
Clean meat can also help to solve global warming. According to The Washington Post, about 14. 5 percent of the planet's greenhouse gas emissions (排放) come from raising livestock. That's more than the emissions from every car, train, ship and airplane in the world combined. It is predicted that switching to clean meat could lower greenhouse gas emissions by 96 percent, The Independent reported.
(1)、Where may the meat we eat come from in future?A、Companies. B、Greenhouses. C、Labs. D、Restaurants.(2)、What can be used to make "clean meat"?A、Stem cells. B、Fatty acids. C、Hamburger patties. D、Chicken nuggets.(3)、What is the advantage of clean meat?A、It is fatty. B、It is healthy. C、It is free. D、It is smelly.(4)、What do we know about clean meat from the last paragraph?A、It comes from livestock. B、It can be switched off. C、It results in global warming. D、It benefits environment. -

When we finished up our work outside,we went in to fix some food and ate supper, then got cleaned up,watched some TV and went to bed.
Morning came quickly with the sun shining in through the windows. While we ate breakfast,we talked about what we needed to do for the day.Since it was the weekend,we wanted to do some more work in the yard to finish the jobs we had started the day before.
We met outside in the front yard this time to do some touch-up work to the front of the house.Dad got out a big tank of white paint to take care of some chips(缺口)along the lower edge of the house next to the basement windows. It was another nice sunny day.As Dad did the painting work,Mom and I picked rocks out of the grass.

How to Make a Marathon Feel Easier
Marathon runners get to influence their effort-based decision making in two ways:firstly by increasing their motivation and, once that is maxed out,by reducing perception of effort, which can be better thought of as"making it feel easier" . But here are some techniques to make that marathon feel more achievable.
Studies have found if we learn to accept unpleasant feelings as something that must besuffered,we perform better and our perception of effort reduces. Before a marathon we do this by"preparing ourselves"for the discomfort ahead. The aim is not to make it too scary but try to control or resist the fears.
You have a long day in front of you,so you may as well try to enjoy it.You can distract yourself from the miles ahead by looking for things to make you smile. Anything that gives you a relief from the discomfort in your body is fair game.
Chunking is a technique where you break down the distance into bits that feel much more manageable and have a goal or a treat for each one.You can chunk into distance, landmarks, places you'll see supporters or based on nutrition consumption.
Finally, keeping in mind your technique, create your instructional secret, which is the short phrase you repeatin your head to remind your body how you run at your best.Mine is"head up"but yours mightbe about your body position, placement or technique. So,head up into your marathon, smile when it gets tricky and pick a tool to make it feel easier.
A.Keep your head up,look forward and run.
B.You can do it each time you pass a drinks station.
C.Accept the fact that you are doing something difficult.
D.Realizing you have dozens of miles to run can be fearful.
E.They can be the best supporter signs,or your favorite costumes
F.It is often the phrase a coach would remind you about in a training session.
G.Motivation is usually easy to find but perception of effort needs more thought.

When stressed out, many of us turn to junk food like deep-fried food for comfort. But a new research suggests this strategy may backfire. The study found that in animals,a high-fat diet disrupts resident gut bacteria( 肠 道 细 菌 ) ,changes behavior and, through a complex pathway connecting the gut to the brain, influences brain chemicals in ways that fuel anxiety.
"Everyone knows that these are not healthy foods, but we tend to think about them strictly in terms of a little weight gain,"said lead author Christopher Lowry,a professor of integrative physiology at CU Boulder."If you understand that they also impact your brain in a way that can promote anxiety, that makes the risk even higher."
Lowry's team divided mice into two groups:Half got a standard diet of about 11%fat for nine weeks;the others got a high-fat diet of 45%fat,consisting mostly of fat from animal products. The typical American diet is about 36%fat,according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
When compared to the control group, the group eating a high-fat diet, not surprisingly, gained weight. But the animals also showed significantly less diversity of gut bacteria. Generally speaking, more bacterial diversity is associated with better health,Lowry explained.
The high-fat diet group also showed higher expression of three genes(基因)(tph2,htrla,and slcba4)involved in production and signaling of the brain chemical called serotonin— particularly in a region of the central part of the brain known as the dorsal raphe nucleus cDRD,which is associated with stress and anxiety. While serotonin is often billed as a"feel- good brain chemical",Lowry notes that certain subsets of serotonin neurons(神经元)can, when activated, touch off anxiety-like responses in animals.Especially, heightened expression of tph2 in the cDRD has been associated with mood disorders in humans.
"To think that just a high-fat diet could change expression of these genes in the brain is extraordinary,"said Lowry."The high-fat group essentially had a high anxiety state in their brain."However,Lowry stresses that not all fats are bad,and that healthy fats like those
found in fish, nuts and seeds can be good for the brain
(1)、What is the new finding?A、Junk food leads to overweight B、High-fat food brings bad moods. C、Brain chemicals cause anxiety D、Gut bacteria benefit brain health.(2)、What does the underlined word"disrupts"in paragraph 1 mean?A、Upsets. B、Facilitates. C、Loosens. D、Generates.(3)、How were the mice eating a high-fat diet by contrast with the control group?A、They looked more anxious B、They lost much more weight. C、They suffered mood disorders. D、They lacked gut bacteria variety.(4)、What does Lowry agree with?A、Every fat is harmful. B、Fish fat is harmless. C、Stress comes from fat. D、Some fats are good. -

As AI develops,it becomes challenging to distinguish between its content and human-created work. Before comparing both,it's good to know about the Perplexity &Burstiness of a text.
Perplexity is a measurement used to evaluate the performance of language models in predicting the next word in a group of words. It measures how well the model can estimate the
probability of a word occurring based on the previous context.A lower perplexity score indicates better predictability and understanding of the language, while a higher perplexity score suggests a higher degree of uncertainty and less accurate predictions. The human mind is so complex compared to current AI models that human-written text has high perplexity compared to AI-generated text.
Examples:
High Perplexity:"The teapot sang an opera of hot, wheeling tea, every steamy note a symphony of flavor."
Low Perplexity:"I poured hot water into the teapot, and a fresh smell filled the room." Burstiness refers to the variation in the length and structure of sentences within a piece of content. It measures the degree of diversity and unpredictability in the arrangement of sentences.Human writing often exhibits bursts and lulls(间歇),with a mix of long and short sentences, while AI-generated content tends to have a more uniform and regular pattern.
Higher burstiness indicates greater creativity, spontaneity( 自 发 性 ) ,and engagement in writing, while lower burstiness reflects a more robotic and monotonous(单调的)style.Just like the perplexity score,human-written content usually has a high burstiness score.
Examples:
High Burstiness:"The alarm screamed.Feet hit the floor.The tea kettle whistled.Steam streamed.Heart pounded.The world,awake."
Low Burstiness:"In the peaceful morning, the alarm clock's soft ring greeted a new day. I walked to the kitchen,my steps light and unhurried. The tea kettle whistled its gentle song, a comforting tune that harmonized with the steam's soft whisper."
Here,I wrote a passage on the"Importance of lifelong learning"myself and also asked ChatGPT to do the same to compare better AI-generated and human-written text.
(1)、What do Perplexity &Burstiness probably serve as?A、Complexities of a language. B、Criteria on features of a text. C、Phenomena of language varieties D、References in generating a text.(2)、What are the characteristics of an AI-generated text?A、Low perplexity and low burstiness B、High perplexity and low burstiness. C、Low perplexity and high burstiness. D、High perplexity and high burstiness(3)、Which of the writing ways below does the author skip when developing the article?A、Quoting sayings. B、Showing examples. C、Giving definitions. D、Making comparisons.(4)、What will be probably talked about next?A、Some essays from ChatGPT. B、An illustration for differences C、An example of the writer's own. D、Analyses of lifelong learning. -

As a college professor,I am required to hold an office hour before my lecture. These office hours are optional and tend to be busier at the beginning and end of a semester(学期).
In the middle, they can become quiet.A few years ago I was given a flute(长笛)as a gift,so I decided that I would use my quiet office hours to practice this new instrument. The experience brought unexpected insights into performance anxiety.
I held my office hour in the near-empty lecture hall, one hour before the class began. The hall was open to any student who wished to talk with me about coursework or to take a seat and quietly read before the lecture began.I would assemble( 组 装 )my flute, open my lesson book, and begin working on the instrument I had never played before.I also followed online video lessons—all done in front of a few students who would come early to class.
I would begin playing long tones, closing my eyes and "forgetting"that anyone was in the room with me.I was surprised to find that I felt no anxiety while learning a new instrument in front of others.Had I been playing my main instrument,I would have had more concern about the level of my playing and how my playing was being received. However,in this setting,it was clear that I was an absolute beginner with no expectations of impressing anyone with my mastery. My attention was set on figuring the instrument out.I had no expectations of how I would sound and had little expectations of sounding like anything more than a beginner.
There have been many things I have learned from my experiment of learning an instrument in public.Whenever musicians talk with me about their stage fright,I offer them this story.

Maddy's daughter Cathy suffered from a condition called spina bifida (脊柱裂). She spent most of her life in a wheelchair, which made even the simplest tasks a tough challenge. One such challenge for Cathy was getting a haircut. As Maddy's neighbor, I witnessed the daily struggle firsthand and felt the urge to help. A hairstylist myself, I decided to visit Maddy's home to cut Cathy's hair. Little did I know this small act would light a spark within me.
Through my visits, I realized that many others in our community had the same problem. Maddy explained the difficulties special groups of people encountered —— the loud noises and strong smells in regular hair salons were too much for people with autism (自闭症). Also, just getting into a salon was tough for people in wheelchairs. Her words touched me, and I wondered if there was something more I could do to help.
An idea began to form in my mind—I could open a special salon, a place where people with physical disabilities or psychological problems would feel more comfortable. It wouldn't just be easy to enter for people in wheelchairs; it would also have floors with different textures(纹理) to help those who can't see well. To make the place even more comfortable, it would have calm music instead of loud pop songs. Toys and blankets would be on hand to help people stay calm. Hairstylists would use quiet hair dryers and soft voices. They would also learn how to help customers who don't like others touching their hair. Most importantly, they would treat every customer with the same level of respect.
The only issue was that I didn't have the funds to make this dream a reality. As a hairstylist, I had limited savings. Maddy suggested," How about organizing a community bazaar(义卖) in our neighborhood this Saturday to raise funds for the salon?" Her eyes shone with enthusiasm as she continued," People love supporting good causes, and I'm sure many would join in to help create a place where everyone feels comfortable getting a haircut. " I nodded, recognizing the brilliance in her plan.

Last year, as my 9- year- old son, Leopold, and I prepared for a ski trip to Keystone, I set a rule: We would say yes to everything. Leopold is a picky eater and can be1 to try new things.
Before the trip, Leopold and I agreed we should say yes to everything. We started saying yes2 we even boarded our flight. The next day, after we got3 at our hotel, I took Leopold to meet his snowboarding4 . My hope was that Leopold would seize this5 to snowboard on a mountain of this size. On the first day, I skied by myself, played it safe and stuck to the long6 green run. On the second day, I thought of Leopold, who, the day before, had kept to our7 and faced his fear of heights. In the spirit of8 ,I challenged myself to ski an intermediate blue run. It was steeper but I did my slow, diligent S- turns and I9 . When Leopold and I reunited, he asked if we could go in the outdoor hot tub. It was a 2- degree day, and the only thing I10 more than being cold is being cold and wet! When I started to11 , Leopold reminded me of the rule. Yes, it was cold, and yes, I was wet. The experience was a12 as Leopold and I braved it together.
And there lies the charm of saying yes on vacation: It13 you to step out of your comfort zone. Though it's not always14 to say yes to everything, developing a sense of adventure helps us live life to the fullest — 15 you sometimes end up cold and wet.

Productivity can be a struggle for many of us. It can be easy to feel upset with overflowing email inboxes, housework, social responsibilities. Write it down, do the tasks and cross them off!
According to the psychologist David Cohen, there are three key reasons why lists are beneficial. Firstly, they help to drown out the disorder and anxiety that comes with having never- ending tasks. By writing everything down, we don't have to rely on our memory and can instead focus on the task at hand.Secondly, lists provide structure and guidance, giving us a plan to follow. As well as this, our brains are more likely to keep information that is presented in a structured and organized manner.. They act as proof of what we have achieved, which can help boost our sense of accomplishment and motivation. Seeing our progress on paper can be a great motivator to keep going and tackle more tasks.
Another possible reason why our brains love lists is something called the" Zeigarnik Effect". This is the name psychologists use for when we remember things we need to do, our unfinished tasks, better than things we have already completed. Researchers from Wake Forest University tested the interference of the Zeigarnik effect on a group of people. The researchers concluded that the group permitted to plan had reduced anxiety and performed better in the next task.
In conclusion, the to- do list is an invaluable tool for managing our daily lives. It just might be the key to unlocking your full potential.
A. Finally, lists give us the psychological boost as well.
B. Instead, we can check our lists to remind us of what's next.
C. This not only helps us stay organized but also reduces mental stress.
D. Nevertheless, making a to- do list is not always a straightforward process.
E. However, one simple tool that can help us stay on top of everything is the to- do list.
F. The next time you feel overwhelmed, grab a pen and paper, and start making your list.
G. This finding highlights the importance of completing tasks and crossing them off our lists.

The idea that night owls who don't go to bed until the early hours struggle to get anything done during the day may have to be revised. It turns out that staying up late could be good for our brain power as research suggests that people who identify as night owls could be sharper than those who go to bed early.
Researchers led by academics at Imperial College London studied data from the UK Biobank study on more than 26,000 people who had completed intelligence, reasoning, reaction time and memory tests. They then examined how participants' sleep duration, quality, and chronotype (睡眠类型) affected brain performance. They found that those who stayed up late and those classed as" intermediate" had" superior cognitive function", while morning risers had the lowest scores.
Going to bed late is strongly associated with creative types. Artists, authors and musicians known to be night owls include Henride Toulouse- Lautrec, James Joyce and Kanye West; But while politicians such as , Winston Churchill and Barack Obama famously seemed to thrive on little sleep, the study found that sleep duration is important for brain function, with those getting between seven and nine hours of shut- eye each night performing best in cognitive tests.
Dr Raha West, lead author and clinical research fellow at the department of surgery and cancer at Imperial College London, said:" While understanding and working with your natural sleep tendencies is essential, it's equally important to remember to get just enough sleep, not too long or too short. This is crucial for keeping your brain healthy and functioning at its best."
Prof Daqing Ma, the co- leader of the study who is also from Imperial's department of surgery and cancer, added:" We found that sleep duration has a direct effect on brain function, and we believe that actively managing sleep patterns is really important for boosting, and safeguarding, the way our brains work.

What exactly is an audiobook today? Is it a book? Is it a play? Or is it becoming something else entirely? What is clear is that a push for market dominance is driving it into a new trend.
Amazon- owned Audible, the market leader, hired the Oscar- winning director Sam Mendes to record multi- voice versions of the Dickens novels Oliver Twist and David Copperfield, making audiobooks the performing of the plays, and announced last month that it had reached an agreement for a recording of JK Rowling's Harry Potter series, voice d by more than 100 actors and featuring a" groundbreaking new soundscape". The new Potter audiobooks, it said, would not take over but maintain conventional recordings by Stephen Fry and Jim Dale, which Audible also hosts.
To say that audio versions are different does not mean they are worse than printed texts. For people with dyslexia(阅读障碍) or ADHD (多动症), they can be a lifeline— as they can be for those who do not have time, or the habit, of reading books. Commuters, and men between the ages of 25 and 44, have been identified as key drivers of their growing popularity.
The good news for those who secretly find audiobooks more accessible, but are embarrassed to admit it, is that brain scans have revealed that they stimulate the same cognitive and emotional parts of the brain. But so would a radio play. Listening to stories, another intriguing piece of research revealed, sets the pulse racing far more than watching them.
So while we celebrate what audiobooks have in common with their print versions – both enable the brain to create its own pictures in a world where pre- manufactured images too often do all the work for us- we should also appreciate that they are translations into a different medium, even when read by the authors themselves. What is certain is that there is room for both.
