There're plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables available in local markets.But while those red juicy strawberries look  fresh,consumers have no way  of knowing how  long the  fruit  can be  stored  at  home.The  same  goes  for distribution centers and supermarkets.

Now,the food technology startup OneThird,located in the Netherlands,is looking to change that with an infrared (红外线)scanner that can accurately predict how long fresh fruits and vegetables will last.The startup is named OneThird because one-third of food is wasted due to spoilage(变质)every year.

The startup's founders were inspired by a UK company that uses this type of technology in the medical field and decided to see if it was applicable for food."I looked at the challenges in the food-supply chain and found out that 40 percent of food waste is fresh produce.One of the biggest causes of waste is that nobody knows shelf life." founder and CEO of OneThird,Marco Snikkers said.  Quality inspections at farms and distribution centers are done manually(手动地).An inspector checks the fruits and vegetables and makes notes about the size and quality.Then the food is sent to consumers without considering travel time or how long the produce will remain usable.

Using the infrared scanner at the distribution center means that inspectors can use the information to approve shipments that will ensure the produce can be distributed on a timely basis.This means that a shipment of ripe tomatoes will not be sent long distances away.

OneThird's scanner combines the technology of optical scanners,image modeling,and Artificial Intelligence to provide accurate shelf-life predictions.  The startup found that the technology can reduce up to 25 percent produce waste that was caused by spoilage. "Global food waste has an enormous environmental impact;reducing global food waste cuts global greenhouse gas emissions and promotes global food security,"said Jacob Smith,a climate expert from the University of Maine.

After we fed everybody and the dishes were washed,my day was over.But I found myself hesitant to leave.It was as if I had known her my entire life.I had not predicted the unselfishness of heart I would encounter,and it was moving.

As we were waiting for the car to pick us up,Nadia showed me her plants that are well-maintained.I could see that despite the hard conditions she was passionate about life.She made me long to be a stronger person.She showed me that poverty was external,but happiness was internal.I was seeking to give 100 percent for a well-intentioned cause,but I left receiving 200 percent from her.

Motorcyclists born to ride supplies to firefighters

Chongqing motorcyclists are being hailed as heroes for volunteering to transport much-needed supplies to the fire and rescue workers fighting the wildfires caused by prolonged heat and drought across multiple districts in the municipality.

As of Wednesday, Chongqing has issued a red alert,  most severe in the four-tier warning system, for high temperatures for 16 consecutive days.

In the scorching heat and drought conditions, multiple wildfires have ravaged many parts of Chongqing. As of Tuesday, several large wildfires have been brought  control with the joint efforts of the fire and rescue workers, social organizations and residents. No casualties have been reported.

Facing the tough situation, the city government called for volunteers with (relate) skills and experience to join the firefighting, and a large number of (motorcyclist) have played an important role and won widespread praise.

HK, mainland university to open in Guangzhou

Mountain torrent that killed 7, injured 8 at scenic spot in Sichuan stirs reaction

There was a tragic death of seven people, and an injury of eight others in a flash flood at a scenic spot in Sichuan province. The  (safe) of tourists visiting unregulated scenic spots prone to flash flooding has become a matter of public issue.

At about 3:30 pm  Saturday, a flash flood hit Longcao valley, a popular tourist spot in Longmenshan town, Chengdu. Several tourists were unable (escape) before the flood hit.

In the wake of the tragedy, tourists have been cautioned against visiting mountainous locations susceptible to flash flooding during the summer flood season.

"Mountain climates are very  (complicate). There can often be heavy rain at the top of a mountain and clear weather below,  can sometimes lead to flash floods or mudslides that people lower down the mountain are unaware of." Xie Hong, a researcher from the Institute of Mountain Hazards and Environment of the Chinese Academy of Science said.

When it rains, slopes become prone to instability and to  (disaster) such as flash floods, mudslides, rockslides, landslides. According to the villagers,  flash flood hit within seconds in this accident.

Xie said that although the warnings are  (clear) posted at such places, some people are quick to forget about such tragedies.

He suggested  (teach) a better understanding of the way weather behaves in the mountains in schools so that awareness of potential danger is ingrained at a young age. He hopes that tragedies like this can  (avoid) in the future.

 Sino-Korean art exhibition kicks off in Shanghai

Born in 1992, an exhibition featuring artworks from 30 Chinese and Korean artists born in the year 1992, opened in Shanghai on Thursday.

Kim Seung-ho, Republic of Korea consul general（总领事）in Shanghai, said at the opening ceremony that the exhibition is meant ( commemorate) the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and South Korea.

"As the Chinese idiom ( go): A man should be independent in society at 30. In the past 30 years, a generation of Chinese and Korean people have worked hard and made excellent achievements in ( develop) the bilateral（双边的）relations," said Kim.

Divided into three sections, the exhibition features 30 artworks that include paintings, photographs, installations（装置艺术）,  videos.

Shanghai-based artist Zheng Yiran created the installation Living Room just for  exhibition. One of the objects within this installation  drew the attention of many visitors is a photo album. "As I ( inspire) by the theme of this exhibition, I created this album by getting each of the participating artists to send me a childhood photo of themselves. I then put all these (image) in one album so that it looks like one person," said Zheng. "It seems as if we share a common memory of the past 30 years, and I invite everyone to come to sit in this (relax) living room and have a look at the growing-up process of this person," she added.

The exhibition is located  Bund 18 Art Space and runs through Aug 28.

Tourists cautioned of flood dangers in wake of tragedy.

 Chongqing heat sparks highest health alert

The Chongqing Health Commission and Chongqing Meteorological Observatory upgraded the city's second-level alert (issue) on Wednesday for heatstroke, changing to a first-level alert for heatstroke on Friday. It is the city's first such top-level alert.

According  the chief forecaster of the municipal meteorological observatory, Luo Juan, the city's first-level alert for heatstroke must come after temperatures in at least eight districts and (county) rise above 40 C for five consecutive days.

From July 29 to Aug 12, a dozen districts in Chongqing had temperatures exceeding 40 C for five to 11 consecutive days. The heat wave is expected (continue) the following week.

Luo said summer in Chongqing is noted for its high (intensify) and long duration. Temperatures are much higher and the rain is (significant) reduced.

Chongqing has witnessed two rounds of heat waves, with 29.3 days of high temperatures on average, (rank) second in the period since 1951.  most was 30.2 days in 2006.
