Going through life can be very challenging at times, when we were young no one told us how hard it will be in the future but here we are. One of the gigantic problems of adult life is having self-doubt, and it is nasty and can kill your confidence levels if not controlled from the get-go. We will all experience some traces of self-doubt, which is natural. It happens to us during normal days or whenever we are going to start a new job, a new task, a new relationship, or anything new in life will make you self-doubt.
There are some people out there that mistake self-doubt for something else. Self-doubt is when you are unsure about one or more aspects of yourself. For example, when starting a new job, you might feel inexperienced or might think that you are not fit enough for the job—this is a prime example of self-doubt.
Self-doubt isn't all that bad. Let us tell you why! Low-level of self-criticism is actually good for you, which motivates you and pushes you to be better in life, to become greater than yesterday. This type of feeling will push you to work harder and faster than before and will also increase your productivity, but it should be a low level of self-criticism, and you don't want to punish yourself over things that are beyond your control.
In plain and simple terms, self-doubt is the inability to have confidence in your own skills and capabilities. It is a venomous mindset that limits you from achieving your true potential, Humility is one of the best traits that you can possess but if it comes at your own expense, then there is no use in having that kind of trait. Anything that proves harmful to your mental or physical health, is something that you shouldn't possess in the first place.
Self-Doubt isn't something that you are born with, which is developed as you pass the different stages of life. There are many ways a person can develop self-doubt. The best approach that we can take is to eliminate any kind of self-doubt we have, but before that can happen, it is necessary that we understand the very cause of self-doubt.

One of my first nights on call started by responding to a message on my phone, and then I arrived at the animal hospital hurriedly.
I had been working as a veterinary(兽医的) nurse at a university hospital for only nine months. My job included assisting doctors in performing operations on animals. And I was already familiar with the basic operation procedure: preparing operation tools, giving anesthesia(麻醉), positioning the animal on the operation table, cleaning the injured part, and at last, attaching the steel plate to the broken bone.
On this particular night, the only information given was an emergency that needed my immediate attention. I was calm, yet anxious as I headed to the hospital. Shortly after arriving at the hospital, I found that two doctors and another nurse had just arrived. They were checking the patient in a stall(牲畜棚) near the operation room.
I entered the stall, surprised to find there stood a tiny horse. Obviously, she lived outside all year round. Her entire body was covered with caked-on mud. She looked normal. The only thing out of place was the unnatural angle at which she held her right back leg, which was injured. As I came closer, I realized she was shaking and sweating, even though the night was cool.
As I approached, I heard her family talking to her, their voices quiet and serious. "It's okay, Doro. We love you. Doctors will fix you right up, "said a small child. Her name was Daisy and the horse was 28-year-old with a broken leg. For a horse, such an injury usually means the death sentence. And Doro's age was against her.
Her family included Mom, Dad, Daisy and her twin brothers, who were as worried as the little girl about the seriousness of the horse's condition. Looking wide-eyed and frightened, Daisy turned to her father and asked, "Daddy, you won't let Doro die, will you?"That look in her eyes struck everyone's heart. I knew we would be working all night to save Doro.
Soon, we anxiously prepared for the operation.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150个左右;
2. 请按如下格式作答。
I rushed into Central Supply, the area where all our operation tools were kept.
"Doro has woken up and now you can see her. Come!"I cheerfully told the family.

Wang Ximeng, an 18-year-old boy, spent half a year creating a nearly 12-meter-long landscape painting under the guidance of Emperor Huizong, the (eight) emperor of the Song Dynasty. He probably couldn't believe that the silk scroll painting (regard)as a masterpiece.
Wang Ximeng's A Thousand Li of Rivers and Mountains, measuring 51.5 1191.5 centimeters, has been (extreme) popular in China. As its name implies, it uses uncommon mineral pigments(颜料) with bright colors (show) the vast country landscape of rivers and mountains.
The waves on the rivers show great patience and techniques of the painter. But you think there's nothing special in the mountains, think again. Amid the continuous, almost- same-height mountains, one tall mountain, towers over all the others around it, suddenly appears. Experts hold a belief it represents the young man's ambition, standing there, like he is the center of the world.
Actually Wang Ximeng is underrepresented in the history of great Chinese artists simply because he has no other (know) works surviving today. Nobody knows exactly when he died, it is believed that he passed away in his twenties.
The excellent skills in the painting make it hard to believe that it came from a teenager. Historians believe beyond the young man's ambition and his landscape painting skills, it also contains great value for historical studies into the Song Dynasty.

I was scared of public speaking. But when I 1 my first novel ten years ago, I was invited to speak at a writers' festival.
The festival was held on a lawn. I arrived at the large tent set-up, 2 find two hundred faces looking at me. Five teenagers sat close in the front row, stretching out their legs. I was sweating 3 I even opened my mouth.
I only had one book to talk about, and it didn't seem like any of the students had read it, or 4 to. The five in the front row started heckling(起哄) and making jokes about some random cartoon characters, causing me to lose my place. 5 out of my depth, I started feeling nervous and 6 my words. I could feel the tears starting, and I didn't know what to do.
Then a teenage boy in 7 of tech for the tent took the spare microphone and began telling his own ghost story. The story was thrilling, full of fear and 8 , and better than anything I'd said so far. I used the five minutes he spoke to 9 and prepare. When he finished, I thanked him, knowing he'd 10 me. And I managed to bumble through the rest of the speech.
I knew I had to somehow learn to 11 my fear. After asking other writers for their tips and advice, I added slideshows, readings and question-and-answers to my 12 . I was still terrified, but the more I did, the better I 13 the unexpected. I had five more that week, none as 14 as the first.
I doubt I will ever look forward to fronting up to hundreds of students, but sometimes I 15 myself by enjoying it more than I ever would have thought was possible.

Historically, CEOs were mainly seen as the managers of their companies. Today's CEOs, however, are increasingly recognized as essential players on the world stage.
It's a phenomenon called CEO statesmanship. This is a function not only of CEOs'economic power, but also of their role in influencing a wide range of people. How can they maximize their impact?
First, a CEO should be prepared to speak out on critical issues. The great fame of CEOs requires them to be informed and thoughtful. More than ever, they are expected to share their views, to engage in national conversations and to contribute to social progress. Saying nothing and avoiding the spot-light may feel safer, but a CEO who stands for nothing is dispensable(可有可无的).
A CEO shouldn't make a statement about every news headline. Leaders who express their opinions on every topic will find that they are expected to respond to issues out of their depths. This invites missteps and the loss of authority. Knowing when to speak and when to stay silent is important. Only by focusing on what lies in their depths, interests and values can they make a meaningful contribution.
Finally, a CEO should act as a catalyst(催化剂) for change. Stakeholders can see the difference between lip service and sincere efforts. When a CEO decides to make a statement on a matter of public concern, it must be backed by concrete actions. For example, if they are keen on green development, they can take measures to reduce theirfirms'carbon footprint.
By speaking out on critical issues, leading with purpose, and acting as catalysts for change, CEOs can help lead society towards a better future.
A. Actions speak louder than words.
B. But how should CEOs take on this role?
C. As leaders, CEOs should lead with purpose.
D. With great power comes great responsibility.
E. CEO statesmanship will matter more than ever.
F. But should CEOs be given so many privileges and responsibilities?
G. They have the power to influence public policy, and even the course of global events.

Jobs are central to our lives. They enable us to make a living. Productive jobs create wealtl and drive development. Full employment ensures not only economic prosperity but also socia cohesion and stability. That is why the International Labour Organization(ILO), as one of the UN agencies specialized in employment, promotes decent work as a key to sustainable development and social justice.
Globally, the world of work is undergoing great changes unseen in a century. We often hear that many people can't find jobs, while employers can't find qualified employees. Ever those who have jobs are worried about the future of their jobs.
Such anxiety is not misplaced. The ILO's World Employment and Social Outlo ok 2020 report shows that all regions are facing major job-skills gaps and mismatches. According to a study, a generation ago the skills you learned in school were sufficient for you to survive in the job market for a while. Now half of the skills you acquired through education and training may start to depreciate(贬值) within 5 years! (Boston Consulting Group, 2023) Skills become outdated much quicker, as technological transformation and the green transition(转型) are quickening.
ChatGPT is a case in point. AI has the potential to replace many professional and ever creative jobs. The potential threat is no longer limited to replacing unskilled repetitive jobs by automation. Technologies are fundamentally reshaping workplaces and jobs.
The green transition is another driver for growing skill-job mismatch. The automobile industry may continue to boom, but electronic cars require a different set of human skills from fossil fuel-driven cars. Jobs in high carbon emission sectors will gradually disappear, while alternative jobs are greened or created in green sectors. According to an ILO analysis, because of the green transition, there could be around 78 million job losses globally by 2030. However, over 103 million jobs can be created — but only if workers can be systematically reskilled and upskilled. (ILO, 2019)

I recently ran into a woman I knew from work years ago. She had performed random acts of kindness but sometimes sounded too shallow. Now here she was again. "Hi, "she said, smiling. "How are you?"Like a fool, I rushed to tell her everything I had been doing.
The woman interrupted me. "That's great. I'm so happy to hear you've finally sorted your life out. "And off she went, leaving me speechless. I tossed and turned that night, thinking about what she had meant. She didn't know anything about my life, so why had she said that?
I finally recognised psychologist Adam Grant's idea about frenemies — those"supposed friends who sometimes help you and sometimes hurt you. "Not for nothing did Grant write: "The most toxic relationships aren't the purely negative ones. They're the ones that are a mixof positive and negative. "
Avoiding these connections whenever possible is probably a good idea, but how do we distinguish frenemies from other friends? Human behaviorist Vanessa Van Edwards has identified three different types of frenemy.
The first is the easiest to detect — the jealous(嫉妒的) frenemy. "On the surface, they want you to succeed but they will gossip about you behind your back and are jealous of your accomplishments and successes, "Vanessa says.
The second type of frenemy is what she calls the undermining(暗中破坏的) frenemy. You think they're on your side and then they start making indirect, unkind comments in front of the boss. The undermining frenemy operates outside the office, too. For example, you tell a friend that you want to lose weight. Are they going to cheer you on or invite you to a bad brunch and bring you a cupcake?
The third type is the hardest to detect, labelled by Van Edwards as the unsure frenemy. She believes that this type of connection has become increasingly common thanks to social media. "Particularly when you have a lot of interactions online with wider social groups, it can be really difficult to know where a person fits in your life. We like each other's posts online with each other. But I'm not sure I like you, " Van Ed-wards explains.

D、She misjudged the woman's behavior and purpose.(2)、What does the underlined word"toxic"in the 3rd paragraph most probably mean?A、Privileged. B、Poisonous. C、Superior. My name is Howard Tucker.
Studies have shown that keeping one's brain stimulated may prevent many age-related cognitive impairments(认知伤害). I keep my brain stimulated by working, though for those who have retired or plan on retiring, a mentally stimulating hobby might be a suitable alternative. It is critical to know yourself and understand your limits and capabilities, but I firmly believe that retirement is the enemy of longevity(长寿).
With people continuing to live longer, it may soon be commonplace to see individuals working into their 80s, 90s and, in some cases, past 100, like me. I now spend my time teaching medical and law students at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland and I prioritize staying current with the latest trends in neurology(神经学), my area of specialization.
Over the years I've had to adapt frequently to the changing technology, which isn't always easy for someone my age. Many doctors I've known simply retired because they did not want to learn how to use computers. But I believe that a desire to continue to learn is a must in one's later years.
While technology has made a huge impact on the practice of medicine, I still urge my medical students to listen to patients, take a thorough patient history and look at the patient while questioning him/her. Then, I would have them look at the imaging studies.
I believe I am wiser now, in the sense I am less judgmental and more patient with my medical students who have forgotten how to take a thorough patient history, the most important part of the examination.
Of course, I've had to make adjustments over the years. Pacing is important. It feels like only yesterday that I would be going on rounds seeing patients in the hospital at 5:00 a. m. Now with my 102nd birthday less than two months away, I find myself sleeping in. But I wake up at 8:30 am, ready to face the day ahead of me.

C、To explain why he keeps working after retirement. D、To clarify what is the most important in neurology.(3)、How does Howard Tucker see technology?A、Adapt to it as it is easy to learn. B、Learn it to avoid retirement. C、Use it to replace old methods. D、Combine it with traditional ways.(4)、What causes Howard Tucker to make adjustments over the years?A、His age. B、His illness. C、His student. D、His sleep.
