• 1、Being the cat's whiskers (胡须) is a humorous and positive way of noting that something is considered to be very near perfect. The humorous and cute images that this particular term brings to mind have to do with the use of the whiskers of the cat, including the ability to express feelings, sense changes in the environment, help with hunting (捕猎), and help the cat measure distance (测量距离).

Different views are held on the exact origin (起源) of the English saying "cat's whiskers". Some believe that the term, along with the similar "cat's meow", has its origin in girls' boarding schools of the 19th century. Others believe that the term was first brought to life by Thomas Dorgan, an artist who was active during the early years of the 20th century. What is generally agreed is that by the 1920s, both "cat's whiskers" and "cat's meow" were often used in the United States, and commonly used as a term among young people of college age.

Unlike other sayings that may sometimes carry positive or negative meanings depending on the setting, "cat's whiskers" is always used in a positive way. An employer (雇主) may use the term to refer to an employee who produces wonderful work. Proud parents may say this to their children when they perform well in a school play or win some type of competition. In each situation, "cat's whiskers" is used to show warm feelings for another person.

While not used as commonly as before, being the cat's whiskers is still generally understood to be a good thing. Younger people may sometimes have to receive an explanation of what the term means, which can lead to seeing the use of the saying in a funny way. Even those who consider the saying to be outdated and not worthy of use in public may still use the term to show love and respect in private settings.

  • 2、Math had never been something I was good at since middle school. Classes became harder in high school, and I was even further from a math teacher's dream student. So at the start of my freshman year, I had an aversion to math. It wasn't that I didn't want to do well, but simply that I didn't think I was able to do well. "I can't" became my state of mind in all things related (有关的) to math.

However, I was soon to learn that "I can't" was not a choice in Mr. A's class.

Mr. A always greeted (迎接) us with open arms as he said, "Welcome! Smile! It's a great day to be alive!" It was clear that Mr. A had a true passion (热情) not only for math but for teaching. If Mr. A ever experienced bad days in life, he never showed it. Mr. A greeted us with that same smile every day. He encouraged each student, from the top achiever to the "I can't" student.

I found myself looking forward to math class, although I still hated the subject itself. Being in Mr. A's presence made me feel good, as if I had the chance to succeed. As the year progressed, I spent increasingly more time on my homework, and I met with Mr. A weekly. My classmates began to do the same, and it became "cool" to have lunch and talk with Mr. A. We didn't know it at the time, but he was changing our attitudes (态度).

Though my story is not one of overnight success and I didn't become a straight-A math student, my hard work did begin to pay off and my grades slowly began to climb. There were hard times, of course. Difficult math questions sometimes succeeded in bringing me down, but Mr. A kept reminding (提醒) me, "Kate, smile! It's a great day to be alive!"

(1)、What does the underlined word "aversion" in paragraph 1 probably mean?
    A、Interest. B、Responsibility. C、Dislike. D、Misunderstanding.
(2)、What first made the author look forward to math class?
A、Mr. A's attitude. B、Her interest in math. C、Her friends' encouragement. D、The top achievers in her class.
(3)、How did the author feel about her talk over lunch with Mr. A?
A、It was straight. B、It was awkward. C、It was challenging. D、It was impressive.
(4)、How did the author change in math?
A、She made slow progress. B、She fell in love with math. C、She became a straight-A math student. D、She became comfortable with difficult math questions.

I really suggest being kind and outgoing. It is better to be really social and introduce yourself. You won't get any where being shy.

Your weight really doesn't matter. If you're really that uncomfortable with it, try working out.

Don't worry about your weight, and don't let it get you down. "Those who mind don't matter, and those who matter don't mind."

Remember that. Concentrate on schoolwork. Be nice, polite, and stay strong. Don't wear the ‘in' clothes just because everybody else does. Wear clothes for YOU. Try babydoll tops and flats; they're very nice and work for almost all body types (类型).

  • 18、The Lost Rules of Etiquette

Etiquette, or good manners, used to be the glue that held society together.Sadly, these days it has mostly gone by the wayside. This list is several best rules of etiquette that have now disappeared.

    Opening the Door

In days gone by, a gentleman would always open doors for ladies. This has now almost entirely disappeared — and it is not entirely the fault of the men. I have seen women laugh at men for opening a door for them. They seem to be confusing manners with chauvinism(大男子主义).

    Writing Thank-You Notes

In days gone by, whenever a person received a gift, they would write a thank-you note as soon as possible.Parents would sit children down after a birthday or Christmas and coach them in their first thank-you note. It is a shame that gift giving has now become a virtual obligation and the idea of a thank-you note would be laughed at.

We seem to have completely lost the concept of correct timing when it comes to parties these days. After all, a party normally has a guest of honor-this is usually the oldest woman present. It was considered extremely rude in the past to leave a party before the guest of honor—and once the guest of honor left, it was a signal to all that they should begin their own preparations to leave.

    A. Arriving on Time.

    B. Leaving at the Right Time.

    C. People leave with various excuses.

    D. It enabled people to get on well with each other.

    E. This rule was true even if the giver was a relative.

    F. It could be the lady they were driving, or a stranger.

    G. We've thrown away the concept of a guest of honor at will.

Within hours of launch, it topped Steam's most-played single-player list, gaining significant attention on social media.

Black Myth: Wukong draws on Chinese mythologies (神话) and the classic novel Journey to the West. It allows players to assume the role of Sun Wukong and start grand adventures. • 20、People are already paying more and more for food due to global warming — and rising temperatures will drive food prices a lot higher in the next decade. According to a study by the European Central Bank, by 2035, higher temperatures alone will be pushing up worldwide food prices by between 0.9% and 3.2% every single year.

To find out how this is affecting food prices, Maximilian Kotz at the Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact Research and his colleagues examined data on the monthly prices and weather conditions in 121 countries between 1996 and 2021. By looking for associations between food prices and factors such as the average monthly temperature, temperature changes, and measures of drought and extreme rainfall, they found a strong link between the average temperature and the food prices a month or so later.

In regions north of 40 degrees, like the latitude (纬度) of New York City and Beijing, warmer-than-average temperatures during winter led to falling food prices. But above-average temperatures increased food prices in summer and at all times in the rest of the world.

"The study didn't look at why prices rose, but the likely explanation is that extreme heat is reducing yields,'' Kotz says. "Crops may be drying out on the vine (藤) when they should be being harvested.'' Factors such as extreme rainfall had less impact on food prices than average temperatures. This may be because flooding tends to be localized, while above-average temperatures can be very widespread.

Other studies have reached similar conclusions. Kotz's team then went further by investigating how food prices could change based on average temperature rises in climate model prediction. In the worst situation, global food inflation (食品通胀) due to climate change goes over 4% per year by 2060. "We need to be aware of the fact that climate change brings huge new challenges for food security,'' says Kotz. "Warming-fueled extreme weather is increasingly affecting food production around the world. If farmers don't adapt their practices to better cope with rising temperatures, the losses will become more serious.''

(1)、What does the study focus on?
A、The impact of climate change on food prices. B、The factors in the rising living costs. C、The effects of natural disasters on food production. D、The comparison of food prices in different regions.
(2)、How did researchers reach their conclusions?
A、By conducting a survey among farmers. B、By referring to previous studies. C、By tracking some cities for years. D、By analyzing a mass of data.
(3)、What is the main reason for the rising food prices according to Kotz?
A、Frequent rainfall. B、Extreme high temperature. C、The increasing demand for crops. D、The influence of trade policies.
(4)、What does the author intend to do in the last paragraph?
A、To call on people to pay attention to food security. B、To urge farmers to take actions to deal with the climate issue. C、To predict the loss caused by the heat wave. D、To explain the situation of global food inflation.
