5、The 2023 Nobel Prize in economics has been awarded to economic historian Claudia Goldin at Harvard University, "for having advanced our understanding of women's labor market outcomes". Goldin's work has helped to explain why women have been under-represented in the labor market for at least the past two centuries, and why even today they continue to earn less than men on average by around 13%.
Goldin mined 200 years of data to analyze how changes in women's participation in the labor force have been influenced by social, political and technological change over the past two centuries. Before Goldin's studies, it was widely thought that the increase in the percentage of women in work over the course of the 20th century was a reflection of economic growth — higher growth meant more females could be employed. But by looking back carefully at historical records, Goldin showed that the percentage of married women involved in paid work was at least as high in the late 18th century as it is today, She also demonstrated that although work opportunities for women expanded in the 20th century, they were not made use of as much as they could have been.
Goldin has also shown that inequalities in pay have not followed a simple relationship with economic growth. The earning divide between different genders was smaller during the industrial revolution during 1820 -1850; the divide changed little between 1930 and 1980. Goldin showed in 2010 that being a mother has a key role in keeping pay inequality, largely through loss of earnings when women quit work in favor of raising children.
"The strength of her work comes from combining reliable historical data with insights from economic theories of wage determination, employment discrimination and political economy," says economist Claudia Olivetti at Dartmouth College. "I am delighted to see Goldin's work recognized. She has been such an inspiration to many women and young researchers. 6、Greenland holds enough ice to raise global sea level by 7 meters if it were all to melt (融化). Even if temperatures shoot up by 6 ℃, or more above pre-industrial levels , humanity will be able to reduce much of that ice loss if warming is limited to 1.5 ℃ within a few centuries, the study shows. It means that the ice sheet can be saved.
But Nils Bochow, a climate scientist at UiT The Arctic University of Norway and lead author of the study and others are quick to note that taking action against climate change now will be cheaper and easier than trying to control global temperatures later. "It's a worthwhile tool to explore because what we have done so far in terms of policy is not enough to be within the limit ," says Bochow.
The authors examine the effect of average global temperature increases rather than temperature increases in the Arctic, which are happening at least three times faster than those on the rest of the planet, And the study assumes that society will somehow work out a way to cut down greenhouse gas emissions (排放) sharply in the future, perhaps through carbon-storage technology. Now, researchers at University College London (UCL) have found some truth to this statement. A new study suggests actors may contain their sense of self when they take on a new character, hinting at the massive impact theater training may have on fundamental mechanisms of the human brain.
"Our findings indicate that cooperating with the theater industry could be helpful in producing theories about social interaction that could also be investigated in the real world," said Dwaynica Greaves, lead author of the study. In particular, the researchers are hoping that future work in this space can focus on how participation in theatrical activities might help people with autism (自闭症).
The actors in the study were fitted with brain imaging technology while they rehearsed scenes from Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream. When they heard their names while performing, their response was contained in the brain region associated with self-awareness. While they were not performing, the actors responded normally when called by name.
The study also looked at interpersonal coordination between pairs of actors. The researchers noticed that two actors rehearsing together had similar brain activity in the regions of the brain associated with social interaction and action planning, revealing "specific brain systems that are coordinated during complex social interactions".
In fact, drama therapy has been considered a beneficial practical strategy for improving social communication in children with developmental or learning disabilities. An initial study found students with autism who underwent theater experiences showed significant positive changes in the development of social and language skills.
In the future, researchers at UCL aim to include both trained and untrained actors as subjects. The recent study, admittedly, lacked a control group of people without theater training and had a small sample size of only 6 actors. But the researchers remain hopeful of the possible future applications of their findings in aiding social communication, including in individuals with autism.

In 1971, 37 percent of students said that a central objective of their college years was to become well-off financially. Seventy-three percent said it was to develop a meaningful philosophy of life. Eighty-two percent of students said that it was essential for them to use college to become well-off financially, while 47 percent said they wanted to develop a meaningful philosophy of life. 15、As a mother and a professional working full time, I spent all of my 30 years saying yes. Saying yes to things I wanted to do, but a lot of the time saying yes to things I disliked.
