1、Begun 30 years ago, the Kubuqi desert-greening project has succeeded in not only controlling the fast growth of the seventh-largest desert in China, about the size of Kuwait, but also turning about 6,000 square kilometers of the desert green. The greening efforts have also controlled desertification (沙漠化) in the rest of the area.
The success of the project, which has been praised by the UN Environment Programme as an "eco-pioneer", sets an example for successful desertification control and ecosystem improvement based on effective government policies, supported by investment (投资) in the eco-industry and combined with the efforts of local farmers. These three aspects are key to the success of the "Kubuqi model".
Elion, a private ecology and investment company, has invested about 38 billion yuan ($5.82 billion) in the Kubuqi desert-greening project since 1988 helping to lift about 102,000 local farmers out of poverty. For example, the locals grow a drought-tolerant (耐旱) plant, Chinese licorice (甘草), which is the most used herb in traditional Chinese medicine. The plant helps enrich the desert soil. Besides, Cistanche, another type of drought-tolerant herb, was introduced after the successful planting of licorice. Under the company's guidance and with the local government's support, the local people benefit from the "environmental wealth".
More companies should be encouraged to apply the "Kubuqi model" in other desert control projects in Inner Mongolia and neighboring Gansu province, where the climate conditions are similar but not quite the same, so as to further gain experience and enrich the model in practice. Showing it can be successfully applied in other areas will help promote the model worldwide.
(1)、What do we know about the Kubuqi greening project?A、It increases the areas of desert. B、It has turned all of the desert green. C、It has achieved satisfying results. D、It is applied all over the world.(2)、Which is NOT the reason for the success of the "Kubuqi model"?A、Efforts of local farmers B、Government policies'support C、Investment in the eco-industry D、Help from the UN Environment Programme(3)、How does the author develop paragraph 3?A、By following the time order B、By giving examples C、By giving a definition (定义) D、By making comparisons(4)、What is the author's attitude towards the greening project?A、Negative B、Doubtful C、Supportive D、Indifferent -
2、Think about the last time you did something that you found difficult. Was it working out a puzzle or working hard on your math homework?
Can you remember the expression you had on your face? Most people will press their lips together and frown (皱眉) when they are doing something they find difficult. This is normally seen as a sign of effort. Now we've found that it can also say more than that.
A recent study at the University of Portsmouth in England suggests that the human expression of effort and frustration is our way of asking others for help.
Scientists at the university gave children and chimpanzees (黑猩猩) an impossible puzzle to work out. When the children couldn't work out the puzzle, their faces expressed determination and effort. The chimpanzees' did not.
Humans and chimpanzees have many facial expressions that share the same meaning. A human smile is the same as a chimpanzee showing its teeth in happiness.
Scientists believe that over time, humans have evolved to use this facial expression to ask for help. We have also learned to respond to it by offering help.
According to Dr. Albert Mehrabian, a well-known professor of psychology at the University of California, Los Angeles, only 7% of human communication happens through words and 55% is through body language. Therefore, understanding expressions is second nature to human beings.
With this in mind, next time you see a person with a frustrated expression, listen to your heart and stop to lend them a hand.
(1)、What does the underlined word "it" in Paragraph 2 refer to?A、Frowning. B、The expression. C、Something difficult. D、A sign of effort.(2)、According to the recent study, people's expression of effort or frustration tells others that ________.A、they need help B、they can do things themselves C、they will give up D、they want to be alone(3)、What can we learn from the study?A、Scientists gave the chimpanzees an easy puzzle. B、The chimpanzees smiled as they worked out the puzzle. C、The chimpanzees' face didn't show determination or effort. D、The chimpanzees used other expressions to ask for help.(4)、Which of the following may Dr. Albert Mehrabian agree with?A、Body language is very important in human communication. B、People don't like to use words to communicate. C、Human expressions are not a kind of body language. D、Words can't help much in communication. -
3、Every New Year, many people make promises to themselves, only to see them fall by the wayside within a few months, weeks, or even days. However, 26-year-old Luke Cameron is not among those people. After losing a close friend known for her generosity (慷慨) and died of cancer in 2013, the young man decided to do at least one good deed (好事) every day for 365 days and he has not missed one yet.
Cameron performed his first good deed on January 1st, 2014, with the simple act of greeting a waitress at a cafe he visited. The next day he bought food and drinks for some homeless people. Cameron's good small deeds have been recorded in an online diary, like taking out the garbage for an elderly neighbor or spending a few hours helping a disabled lady pick out a dress for a party. What's more, the young man has also spent close to £4,000 of his own money, buying gifts for children in need.
Cameron has created a series of some cards, which he has called "Cards for Kindness". Each card suggests a simple act of kindness — things like giving a stranger a hug or making peace with an enemy, which is to encourage others to perform good deeds.
Cameron's generosity has not gone unnoticed. To reward the young man as he nears the end of his journey, pizza chain Domino's recently awarded him a year's supply of free pizza. Not surprisingly, the big-hearted young man has decided to use the gift to hold special pizza days for charity. His kind deeds have also won him a competition for the job of "National Philanthropy (慈善事业) Manager".
(1)、What made Cameron decide to do good deeds every day?A、The need of a competition. B、The requirement of his job. C、The influence of his families. D、The death of a close friend.(2)、What is the second paragraph mainly about?A、The influence of simple acts of kindness. B、The good things that Cameron has done. C、The importance of having close friends. D、The prizes that Cameron has received.(3)、Why did Cameron create "Cards for Kindness"?A、To record his good deeds. B、To make peace with an enemy. C、To raise money for some charities. D、To encourage people to show kindness.(4)、Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A、No Pains, No Gains B、The Power of Dreams C、A Good Deed Every Day D、The Best Man in Britain -

Sally's birthday was approaching, and the excitement that usually filled her heart was now replaced with disappointment and stress. Turning eleven was a big deal, and she had always celebrated it with a grand party surrounded by her friends. However, this year was different. The burden of excessive homework and her parents' struggling business weighed heavily on her, forcing Sally to make the difficult decision of not having a birthday party, even though it was an event she enjoyed dearly every year. One day, during the break, her best friend, Jane, with a curious look in her eyes, approached. "Are you going to have a birthday party this year?" Jane asked, sensing Sally's sadness. "No," Sally sighed and replied sadly, "there's just too much going on and my parents are going through financial difficulties."
She smiled weakly, trying to conceal (掩饰) her extreme disappointment and stress, but Jane saw through her pretence easily. Jane nodded thoughtfully and did not say anything. After the break, Sally saw her talking to one of their classmates, Sarah, secretively. Curious, Sally went over to them, but as soon as Jane saw her, she quickly walked away. Sally was scared by Jane's strange actions and turned towards Sarah. "What did she say?" Sally asked. However, Sarah simply shrugged and walked away, leaving Sally standing there, feeling left out and anxious.
"What is happening?" Sally wondered anxiously. "Are they keeping something from me?" As Sally's birthday drew nearer, Jane was often found chatting softly with their other classmates. Whenever Sally went over to them, they would just walk away or tell her that they were talking about a secret which Sally was not allowed to know. "Jane has never kept secrets from me before," Sally thought. Her heart fell. Even her friends were distancing themselves from her! She swung between confusion and sadness with each passing moment, desperately trying to figure out what was happening. Why were her friends distancing themselves from her? And what were they hiding?

8、How far would you walk to learn about something that interested you? When he was young, Jacob Lawrence often walked more than sixty1 from his home in the Harlem section of New York City to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Jacob wanted to be a(n)2, and he believed that studying the famous paintings3 in that museum would help him.
It was 1930, when many people were out of work, money was tight and people suffered a lot. Still, the streets were4 with energy and color. As he walked through Harlem, Jacob looked hard at the people, the churches, and barber shops and so on. He5 those images in his mind, along with the images of paintings he saw in the6.

9、How Mobile Technology has Changed Our Lives Forever
The invention of the mobile phone and mobile technology was incredible. Here we highlight the most common ones that technology is changing our lives today.
● Mobile technology has changed how we communicate.
The advancement of technology has made communication unbelievably fast and convenient.
In the past, writing a letter or finding a wired telephone was the best way to communicate remotely with someone. You can send them a message on social media, text them, video chat, email, or put a call through.
● Mobile technology creates the "Everything" device.
With many businesses mobile technologies have brought about, there are some products that they have made out of date. Now just one device has replaced the portable (便携式的) music player, alarm clock, GPS, calculator, camera, flashlight, calendar and much more.
● Mobile technology leads to ever-present distraction.
In many places, it's a common sight to see just about everyone with a mobile phone within arm's reach. In the first two ways listed above, that can be useful. As mobile technologies have become more and more widespread in today's society, research has begun to connect heavy day-to-day use with a number of side effects, the majority of which are related to mental health.
We should accept that mobile technologies are here to stay and improve our lives for the better in spite of its shortcomings. In my opinion, its advantages far outweigh its disadvantages.
A. We cannot ignore its disadvantages.
B. All in all, mobile devices greatly benefit our lives.
C. However, instant access is not always a good thing.
D. While these things do still exist, they are no longer absolutely essential.
E. Nowadays, you are blessed with more efficient options at your fingertips.
F. The conventional way of doing shopping has also changed beyond imagination.
G. Since then, advances in mobile technology have shaped our lives in various ways.

10、Who is a genius? This question has greatly interested humankind for centuries.
Let's state clearly: Einstein was a genius. His face is almost the international symbol for genius. But we want to go beyond one man and explore the nature of genius itself. Why is it that some people are so much more intelligent or creative than the rest of us? And who are they?
In the sciences and arts, those praised as geniuses were most often white men, of European origin. Perhaps this is not a surprise. It's said that history is written by the victors, and those victors set the standards for admission to the genius club. When contributions were made by geniuses outside the club—women, or people of a different color or belief—they were unacknowledged and rejected by others.
A study recently published by Science found that as young as age six, girls are less likely than boys to say that members of their gender(性别)are "really, really smart." Even worse, the study found that girls act on that belief: Around age six they start to avoid activities said to be for children who are "really, really smart." Can our planet afford to have any great thinkers become discouraged and give up? It doesn't take a genius to know the answer: absolutely not.
Here's the good news. In a wired world with constant global communication, we're all positioned to see flashes of genius wherever they appear. And the more we look, the more we will see that social factors(因素)like gender, race, and class do not determine the appearance of genius. As a writer says, future geniuses come from those with "intelligence, creativity, perseverance(毅力), and simple good fortune, who are able to change the world."
(1)、What does the author think of victors' standards for joining the genius club?A、They're unfair. B、They're conservative. C、They're objective. D、They're strict.(2)、What can we infer about girls from the study in Science?A、They think themselves smart. B、They look up to great thinkers. C、They see gender differences earlier than boys. D、They are likely to be influenced by social beliefs(3)、Why are more geniuses known to the public?A、Improved global communication. B、Less discrimination against women. C、Acceptance of victors' concepts. D、Changes in people's social positions.(4)、What is the best title for the text?A、Geniuses Think Alike B、Genius Takes Many Forms C、Genius and Intelligence D、Genius and Luck -
11、Watching the behaviour and body language of zoo animals could be the key to understanding and improving their welfare, new research suggests. Traditionally, zoos have focused on more straightforward measures such as whether animals are eating and sleeping.
The new review, by the University of Exeter and the University of Winchester, says zoos have made great improvements in recent years, but closer observation of animal behaviour - a method called Qualitative Behavioural Assessment, developed in farming - could show even more about their state of mind.
An animal's positioning of its body, facial movements and activity levels are among the things that might tell whether it is excited, calm, interested, nervous, relaxed, etc.
"Zookeepers are knowledgeable about their animals, and they will often recognise an animal's state of mind by its behaviour and body language," said Dr. Paul Rose, of the University of Exeter.
"What we are suggesting is a more scientific method of this, carried out over time.
"Certain behaviours will show certain moods (情绪) in an animal, and we should build our knowledge of this for different animals that live in zoos. For example, lions have a lot of facial expressions, and research on these expressions could help zoos understand the animals' state of mind. This information could then be used to improve welfare by changing diets, feeding times or any number of other aspects of the way animals are kept."
Dr. Rose carries out much of his research at WWT Slimbridge Wetland Centre, and is now examining how the swans (天鹅) there might show their state of mind through their behavioural expression.
"We're looking at how much time they spend exploring their habitat, which could show what they're feeling." he said. "When they're unsure, they appear to move less and be more careful, and draw their feathers (羽毛) close to their bodies."
The study suggests research opportunities for Qualitative Behavioural Assessment and practices that could be used by zoos. "Animal welfare in zoos has improved greatly in the last 10 or 20 years, and this method gives zoos another way to recognise and improve the welfare of animals," Dr. Rose said.
(1)、How to improve zoos animal's welfare?A、More focus on animals'eating and sleep. B、Closer observation of zoo animals' behaviours. C、More attention to zoo animals'state of mind. D、Adoption of more straightforward measure.(2)、What is the function of lions as an example?A、To show body language vary from animal to animal. B、To show the significance of animal body language. C、To show lions are rich in their facial expressions. D、To show lions are treated well in zoos.(3)、What dose Dr Rose research of swans suggests?A、They usually explore their habitat. B、They always draw their feather close to their body. C、They move little in fearful situations. D、They spend little time in their habitat.(4)、What can we know from the last paragraph?A、Animal welfare in zoos is decreasing. B、Qualitative Behavioural Assessment is meaningful. C、Farm animals enjoy greater welfare than zoo animals. D、Zoos do a good job in recognising animal body language. -
12、In about a week I will start one of my most expected adventures ever. Sarek National Park will be a mission: It is not a place for the unprepared. It is a place for adventurous hearts who are looking for solitude (独处), wildness and a connect ion with nature that is hard to find on our planet these days. High up in the north of Sweden at the border with Norway, it is called the last European Wilderness.
The preparation for this trip started a few months ago. I tried to prepare in the best way possible as this is uncharted territory for me. It will be the first hike really off the beaten path. I will not go into details until I get back and actually know what I am talking about.
There are a few things to keep in mind when you plan to hike in Sarek National Park. First of all, there are no huts (棚屋) or any accommodation. If you are at the heart of Sarek you will be at least a 4-5 days hike away from the next mountain hut. So this means I will have to carry everything I need for 8-10 days. The biggest part of the load will be food. There are no paths or waymarks. I will have to make my own route with GPS and maps.
In addition, the weather can be very challenging. Sarek is the area in Sweden with the heaviest rainfall. It is also known for strong wind and there're not many places to shelter from it because there are hardly any trees. It is important to bring professional hiking gear (装备). Finding and choosing a good campsite might take some time as well.
(1)、What does the author consider Sarek National Park to be?A、It is a place hard to find. B、It is a place for the unprepared. C、It is the last wilderness on our planet. D、It is a place which is attractive and demanding.(2)、Which words has the similar meaning to the underlined word "uncharted"?A、Not adventurous. B、Not well- received. C、Not explored. D、Not dangerous.(3)、What can be inferred from paragraph 3?A、The author will make a map of Sarek. B、The author will hike 4-5 days in the Sarek. C、The author will reach the depths of Sarek. D、The author will stay in the park for 8-10 days.(4)、What is the main idea of paragraph 4?A、Sarek National park is full of rainfall and strong wind. B、Finding good campsites need a lot of time. C、Adventurers need to bring professional hiking gear. D、Adventurers should be aware of the challenging weather. -

14、阅读下面材料, 根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
Ava, a fifth-grader, longed for a cell phone like her peers but had to wait until she was thirteen. To persuade her parents, she penned an essay, demonstrating she was mature enough for a cell phone. Her parents, impressed, gave her an old phone.
"Ava," her dad said seriously, "a cell phone isn't just for fun and games. It's a significant responsibility. You must keep your phone secure. You must silence it in public spaces. You must..." He listed all of the ways that she had to be responsible with her phone. But Ava, too busy with choosing the perfect wallpaper, downloading apps, and chatting with her best friend Sarah, only half-listened.
Over the weekend, Sarah's mom took the girls to a movie. Normally Ava avoided horror films, but Sarah's pleading words with funny memes (表情包) had somehow convinced Ava that the movie might actually be enjoyable. Before the movie started, Sarah's mom instructed the girls to silence their phones out of respect for others. As the movie's tension built, Ava found herself growing increasingly uncomfortable. "I need to go to the bathroom," Ava whispered to Sarah.
After the movie, while waiting for Sarah's mom to fetch the car, Ava felt a sinking feeling. "I can't find my phone!" she shrieked, patting down all of her pockets. Panic-stricken, Ava searched her bag, yet her phone seemed to have vanished. Ava got into the car, her stomach in knots.
"Are you going to tell your parents?" Sarah whispered to Ava on their ride back. Ava was silent, her mind racing with the consequences. She could envision her parents' disappointed faces and harsh words. She feared that this incident might lead to her parents taking away the privilege of having a phone altogether.
As they arrived, Ava climbed out of the car and trudged home, her heart heavy with what had happened.

16、阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
Jianbing is one of China's most popular street breakfasts. Every neighborhood has its own Jianbing vendor (摊贩) serving breakfast dawn through mid-morning, satisfying hungry (local) on their way to work.
Contrary to you might think, Jianbing is no grab-and-go street breakfast. To preserve the crispness (酥脆) of the pancake, the vendors never cook Jianbing in advance, so waiting in a line is part of the culture. But(basic), Jianbing is a breakfast worth waiting for.
Jianbing has a longer history than almost any other Chinese street food. It is thought to have originated in Shandong Province during the Three Kingdoms Period, military strategist Zhuge Liang had his soldiers cook food on shields (盾) (hold) over the fire.
Of course, if Jianbing were that easy to make, it would have taken the world by storm long before now. Part of challenge of copying the dish is that the recipe for a Jianbing differs from region to region, and even from vendor to vendor.
Many consider it (possible) to make your own Jianbing without months of practice and tuition from a master. Yet a few committed foreigners have made it, who (inspire) to bring Jianbing to a hungry audience after their first taste in China back in the 1980s. In the UK, twins Melissa and Oliver Fu, owners of Mei Mei's Street Cart are bringing the joys of Jianbing first to London and now Manchester despite all the difficulty they have in (perfect) their technique.

The animal1 where he worked was full of abandoned pets as people2 to deal with the ongoing economic decline. In those days, animals would be euthanized (安乐死) if they weren't3 in seven days. The cruel reality deeply troubled Stewart, even leading him to consider4 his profession.
One fateful day, outside a convenience store, he5 a homeless man with a dog suffering from a visible skin issue. The man,6 for a solution, shared his dog's suffering. Stewart examined the dog and then7 some medicine to him. In tears, the man thanked Stewart, saying "Thank you for not8 me". The very words served as a wake-up call to Steward and inspired his next9.

18、Holidays abroad are easier than ever thanks to smartphones. With the autumn weather fast approaching, it's the perfect time of year to jet off and get away from hustles and bustles. Here are some top tips to make sure you're not caught out on your break abroad.
Treat yourself to a power bank
The batteries inside our phones are typically designed to last for around a day of moderate usage. So you're going to want some extra support so you don't end up going AWOL (absent without leave) when your phone dies. That's why I recommend picking up a USB power bank, which will give you a little bit of extra juice to keep you connected to the rest of the world.
Enable Data roaming (漫游)
The good news is that it is easier than ever to stay connected to the net when abroad. Make sure you check with your network provider what your roaming plan is. In many countries it is straightforward to buy a SIM card for a local network, with a much more generous data allowance. If you've got a newer phone, it will probably support "eSIM" — where you can simply use an app like Holafly or Airalo while connected to wifi to set yourself up on a new network temporarily.
Download offline application software
And finally, you need to get your apps in order. Once you reach your destination you'll need a mapping app, and maybe even a translation app — Apple and Google make their own version of both. And modern translation apps are particularly exciting. Then you get a clear translation. Make sure that all of the critical data is downloaded so that apps work offline and you can travel the world like a local. Bon voyage!
A. What good is a phone without Internet access?
B. You simply wave your phone at the scanner instead.
C. In fact, you may not even need a physical card anymore.
D. Why do you need to get your phone ready to be connected?
E. But when you're away from home, you're probably using it so much more.
F. You can typically just wave the camera of your phone over pretty much anything.
G. But before leaving for the airport, ensure your phone is ready for the journey ahead!

19、One day I typed into ChatGPT all about my upset feelings and it instantly responded, offering a list of practical advice. Nowadays million pens of people are already turning to ChatGPT and specialist therapy (治疗) chatbots for convenient and inexpensive men al health support.
Some experts say this is a boon. After all, AI, undisturbed by embarrassment, might be able to express empathy (同理心) more openly and tirelessly than humans. But others worry about the consequences of people seeking emotional support from machines that can only pretend to care. Some even wonder if the rise of so- called empathetic AI might change the way we interact with one another. Indeed, empathy is one of our species' defining qualities, developing as it did in pace with social interaction.
One recent analysis about empathy looked at 52 studies published between 1980 and 2019, which shows that the empathizer must first be able to recognize how the other person is feeling. They must also be affected by those emotions and distinguish themselves and the other person, grasping that the other person's feelings aren't their own while still being able to imagine the other person's experience.
On the first point, in recent years, AI- powered chatbots have made progress in their ability to read human emotions, most powered by large language models (LLMs) that work by predicting which words are most likely to appear together based on training data. In this way, LLMs like ChatGPT can seemingly identify our feelings and respond appropriately most of the time. But when it comes to the other criteria, AI still misses the mark in many ways. Empathy is interpersonal, with continued feedback helping to perfect the sympathizer's response, which also requires some degree of intuitive (直觉的) awareness of an individual and their situation.
All of this helps to explain conversations like the ones I had with ChatGPT. At the end of the day, despite talking to multiple chatbots online, I did what I knew I had to do all along: I picked up my phone and called a friend.

20、Mosquitoes carry malaria (疟疾), which kills thousands of people each year. Now some researchers are trying to use genetic engineering to make the annoying insects into partners in the fight against the disease.
For years, public health officials have tried to limit the disease by controlling mosquito populations. "But that approach is temporary," says Anthony James, a professor of biology and genetics at the University of California, Irvine, "Because mosquitoes are extremely tough little insects, and their populations can quickly rebound."
Therefore, James and his colleagues want to try a different approach: making mosquitoes themselves into malaria-fighting warriors, which is a complete departure from traditional ways of controlling malaria.
To understand how it works, it helps to understand the life cycle of malaria. The malaria pathogen (病原体) is a parasite (寄生虫) that grows inside humans. It's passed via mosquitoes that move from person to person, sucking blood. "If we can make the mosquitoes difficult for the pathogens to survive, we can wipe out the disease," he says. But making mosquitoes uninviting to malaria is a tough job.
To solve the problem, the team used a gene-editing technique called CRISPR. They started with genes from mice, whose immune systems do fight human malaria, engineered those genes, and then gave them to the mosquitoes.
It turned out the malaria-fighting antibodies which gene-edited mosquitoes produced worked very well. They reduced the number of parasites in the mosquito before they were passed to a human host.
James' team are now working on planning a field trial, which he hopes could be conducted on an island or in another isolated location.
But genetically changing wild animals does not sit well with environmentalists. "There's no need to engineer a mosquito," says Dana Perls, senior program manager for the emerging technology program at the non-profit Friends of the Earth. Perls points out that naturally occurring methods for reducing malaria appear to be showing promise, as does a new vaccine (疫苗) against the disease. "Why take unnecessary risks and release a species that can't be recalled once it's released into the wild?" she asks.

D、Gene-edited mosquitoes.(3)、What is environmentalists' attitude toward this new approach?A、Tolerant. B、Favorable. C、Objective. D、Disapproving.(4)、What is the best title for the text?A、Limiting Malaria by Controlling Mosquito Populations B、Controlling Malaria by editing Mosquitoes' genes C、Curing Malaria with Gene-edited Mosquitoes D、Preventing Malaria with a new vaccine
