As Miller defines it, hope is not a naive approach to seeing the world, where we ignore problems and engage in "wishful thinking". Instead, hope is a complex response, (involve) "feeling, thought, action, vision, a life force, and a way of seeing or being". Having hope, as opposed to living in fear, he argues, helps us to see possibility in present-day circumstances and not become overwhelmed. People who feel hopeful are good problem-solvers, more engaged and productive at work, more (create) and adaptable, and better at recovering from adversity. For these reasons and others, inputting more hope into ourselves means we (equip) to handle problems more smoothly.

After the photo was taken, they quietly stepped aside, allowing their daughter to return to her duties.

When I was in middle school, my social studies teacher asked me to enter a writing contest. I said no without thinking. I did not love writing. My family came from Brazil, so English was only my second language. Writing was so difficult and painful for me that my teacher had allowed me to present my paper on the sinking of the Titanic by acting out a play, where I played all the parts. No one laughed harder than he did. So, why did he suddenly force me to do something at which I was sure to fail? His reply: "Because I love your stories. If you're willing to apply yourself, I think you have a good shot at this."

Encouraged by his words, I agreed to give it a try. I chose Paul Revere's horse as my subject. Paul Revere was a silversmith in Boston who rode a horse at night on April 18,1775, to Lexington to warn people that British soldiers were coming. My story would come straight from the horse's mouth. Not a brilliant idea, but funny, and unlikely to be anyone else's choice. What did the horse think, as he sped through the night? Did he get tired? Have doubts? Did he want to quit? I sympathized immediately. I got tired. I had doubts. I wanted to quit. But, like Revere's horse, I kept going. I worked hard. I checked my spelling. I asked my older sister to correct my grammar. I checked out a half-dozen books on Paul Revere from the library. I even read a few of them. When I handed in the essay to my teacher, he read it, laughed out loud, and said, "Great. Now, write it again." I wrote it again, and again and again. When I finally finished it, the thought of winning had given way to the enjoyment of writing. If I didn't win, I wouldn't care.

  • 19、Apps and Your Privacy

In today's digital age, protecting your privacy while using apps is important. All apps collect data as you use them. Here are some good tips to keep your personal information safe.

For starters, download apps only from the App Store, not from random websites.

Before you accept an app's terms and conditions, look at what information it's planning to collect and think twice if it's asking for too many permissions. For example, why would a gaming app need access to text messages? You may think it's inconvenient, but it's worth it.

Also, most apps don't need to know your location, but for those that do, you can choose to enable location services only when using the particular app, another smart privacy safeguard.

Don't use your main e-mail address or social media account. This way, if there is a security breach (缺口), your exposure is contained to things connected to that address.

And, of course, use a secure password. This means a long one (at least ten characters) with a mixture of letters, numbers, and special characters—and a unique password for each app. According to security experts, a good trick is to create a memorable "passphrase" by creating a series of random (任意的) words, and then replace numbers or special characters for some of the letters Go ahead and write them down—just store it in a secure location (not your wallet or phone case!).

Finally, remember that privacy is an ongoing concern. Regularly review the apps you have installed and the permissions you've granted them. Stay informed about the latest privacy threats and solutions. By taking these simple steps, you can enjoy the benefits of apps while protecting your personal data.

    A. It's better to be safe than sorry.

    B. How will you ever remember them all?

    C. Why is it so important to protect our privacy?

    D. Moreover, create strong, unique passwords for each app.

    E. Because it can prevent bad software from infecting your device.

    F. Following these four steps will help ensure you're not oversharing.

    G. Sign up an e-mail address just for things like app permissions and e-mail newsletters.

  • 20、Sleep, considered a luxury by many, is essential for a person's health. Researchers have found that lack of sleep and tiredness increase a person's risk of developing severe medical conditions, such as obesity (being very overweight), high blood sugar levels, and heart disease. Now, a new study has found that getting enough sleep is also the key to improving academic performance.

Jeffrey Gross, the university science professor who led the research, was not trying to find the relationship between sleep and grades when he handed out smart watches to the 100 students in his chemistry class. Instead, the professor hoped the devices, which track a person's physical activity, would show a connection between exercise and academic achievement.

While Gross's data showed no relationship between these two factors, the study found something surprising. As the researchers were analyzing their data, they noticed that there was a straight-line relationship between the average amount of sleep a student got and their results in the course's 11 quizzes, three midterm tests, and the final exam.

Even more interesting, it was not enough for students to just head to bed early the night before a test. Instead, it's the sleep you get during the days when learning is happening that matters most.

The time students went to bed each night was similarly important. Those who went to bed in early hours of the morning performed poorly, even if the total sleep time was the same as a higher-performing student. "When you go to bed matters," Gross says, "If you go to bed at 10, or 12, or l at night, and sleep for seven hours, your performance is the same. But if you go to bed after 2, your performance starts to go down even if you get the same seven hours. So, quantity isn't everything."

Perhaps the most interesting was the huge impact that small differences in sleep patterns had on the students' grades. The overall course grades for students averaging six and a half hours of sleep each night were 25% lower than students who averaged just one hour more sleep. Similarly, students who varied their bedtime by even one hour each night had grades that dropped 45% below those with more regular bedtimes.

(1)、What have researchers found about lack of sleep?
A、It can help people lose weight. B、It can make people more likely to get sick. C、It can reduce people's risk of heart disease. D、It can improve people's academic performance.
(2)、What was Professor Jeffrey Gross's original intention?
A、To study the relationship between sleep and grades. B、To investigate the impact of sleep on students' health. C、To prove that smart watches can track physical activity. D、To find out the connection between exercise and academic achievement.
(3)、According to the text, which of the following is correct?
A、The more sleep students get, the better their grades. B、It's the sleep you get during the daytime that matters most. C、Differences in sleep patterns have great impact on students' grades. D、Students who go to bed after 2 am can perform well by sleeping longer.
(4)、What is the main idea of the text?
A、The importance of exercise for students. B、The relationship between sleep and health. C、The impact of sleep on academic performance. D、The benefits of using smart watches in class.
