For example, a calculator will tell you the average number of calories in a hamburger, but it can't tell you exactly how many calories are in the hamburger. The same goes for nutrients like protein or fat. And this is what makes the new CaloRieco so special.

The spokesman for the company said that its outstanding invention is aimed at dieters and CaloRieco is a high-tech device that uses light reflection technology to determine the-nutritional diabetes sufferers, both of whom make up a sizable market. Displayed at a recent tech show, values of almost any food and also provide accurate calorie estimates. All you have to do is put your plate in the box-shaped device and wait between 10 and 20 seconds for it to analyze all the food.

Once it's done analyzing the various ingredients (烹饪材料) in your meal, CaloRieco shows the number of calories, as well as the nutritional content on an LED display. According to the company the device is able to recognize the vast majority of foods, except soups and very dark dishes.

CaloRieco can also connect to your smartphone via an app, and send all the data about analyzed foods to your handheld device, so you can access it whenever you need.

Unfortunately, you'll have to wait a bit longer to get your hands on your very own CaloRieco, as the device presented at the show is just a prototype (样机) which needs to be improved. It's expected to be a hit in the next few years, but the price remains a mystery.

When I entered high school, my world seemed to be changed. Among 790 freshmen, I couldn't find a familiar face from middle school. At home, loneliness continued. My elder brother was planning for his future in college, my younger brother seemed to have built a wall between us, and my outgoing older sister was always surrounded by her friends. While some may have an initial advantage, language acquisition is largely a skill that can be developed through practice, patience, and perseverance. In language learning it is attitude that determines success, not about having a "gift" for languages

It's commonly assumed that immersing oneself in a foreign country where the language is spoken is the only way to learn a language effectively. However, most of the oceans on Earth remain unexplored. For example, photographers are fond of pointing out that scientists have mapped nearly all the oceans' surface, but less than a quarter of the seabed. Biologists think the oceans might host more than 2 million species of animals, of which they have so far identified perhaps a tenth.

A new project may change this. Launched in London on April 27th, 2023, Ocean Census aims to discover 100,000 new species of ocean animals over the coming decade. Its first ship, Kronprins Haakon, set sail on April 29 for the Barents Sea.

The project is launched for two reasons. One is that the longer scientists wait, the less there will be to study. "Top on our agenda are species thought to be in the greatest danger from climate change," says Oliver Steeds, founder of the project. "Otherwise, the forest is burning down and we won't know what was there before it is lost."

The second reason is technological. Biologists find about 2,000 new species a year, a rate hardly changed since Darwin's day. Ocean Census is betting that it can go faster. Fancy cameras on remote-operated vehicles, for instance, allow scientists to scan deep-sea creatures such as jellyfish without removing them from their habitat. Just as the huge pressures of the deep sea are deadly for humans, taking such a jellyfish to the surface for examination may reduce it to gooey slime (黏液).

Exactly what the new effort might turn up, of course, is impossible to predict. But history suggests it will be fruitful. Half a century ago, scientists discovered hot seabeds that were home to organisms living happily in conditions that, until then, had been thought harmful to life. These days, such hot seabeds are thought to be one possible candidate for the origin of all life on Earth.

And now, thanks to an 8-year long study that's making the rounds on the Internet again, science is confirming what I know is true. In the study, researchers discovered that having an older or younger sister can help ease the anxiety for kids between the ages of 10 and 14 years. They also found that people with sisters can "learn how to make up and to have control over their emotions again, which are skills that undoubtedly serve children well.

The revival of this study actually comes on the heels of another newer study, which shows that it's not just the older kids and parents who influence and shape children as they grow. It turns out that younger siblings do too, and what's more, they may also give their older siblings a greater chance of developing empathy (同情).

The Canadian study followed 452 pairs of siblings, all between a year-and-a-half and 4 years old. The researchers found that having a younger sibling increased the older sibling's level of empathy.

This research confirms that sisters are pretty amazing in making the world a much lovely place. As the mom of two boys, I often wonder what kinds of lessons they will learn from their younger sister. Perhaps they will be the same lessons I learned from mine that cooler heads always win. This study gives me hope that all those endless arguments between my kids may actually be laying the groundwork for conflict-settlement skills.

The day started very early at 7:00 am. I had my breakfast downstairs with my mum. She could tell that I was very nervous. Mum kept asking me what was wrong. She told me I had nothing to worry about and that everyone was going to love me. If they didn't love me, Mum said she would send them her way for a good talking to, I couldn't stop laughing.
