Old China Café

    Eating here is a little like dining in a museum as the walls are lined with photos and memorabilia of the local Chinese laundryman's association. Chinese and Asian dishes keep regulars and travellers coming back for more. The menu changes monthly. 

San Pedro

    This restaurant serves Portuguese cuisine. Try the baked fish (seabass or red snapper) , curry chicken (can be quite spicy) , fried brinjauls and the black pepper crabs. Call ahead to reserve a table (and your fish) , because once their fish runs out, they will close for the day. 

The Bungalow

    Facing the hotel pool and the beach, this restaurant has indoor and outdoor seating. At night, the atmosphere is very romantic. The Chinese menu concentrates on traditional Hainanese dishes, but includes dishes such as fish curry, chicken rice and file t mignon. 

No. 7 Sup Corner

    Even if you miss this buffet-style restaurant at the road bend, you will not miss the number of cars parked at the road shoulder or the locals heading to it during lunchtime. It serves Malay dishes. First get your plate of rice, and then take whatever you would like to eat. Present your food plate to the lady at the counter and pay for it. Closed on Fridays and during Ramadan. Come early as there's always a crowd outside. 

His father said, "All set, boy?" and Jeremy nodded, picking up his gun with awkward gloved hands. His father pushed open the door and they went out into the freezing dawn together. Ordinarily Jeremy would take out his camera to record the scenery, but not this morning. This was the morning, particularly sacred, when 14-year-old Jeremy would go duck hunting for the first time.

The sun came out. Jeremy could see everything clearly: his father's face, tense and eager; the white frost on the gun. His heart was beating wildly. He prayed, "Don't let them come, please!"

But they kept coming. "Four black," his father said. "One mallard（野鸭）." High above, Jeremy heard the pulsing whistle of wings as the flight began to circle. The mallard was leading, his feet dropping down, reaching for the silver-colored water. Closer, closer... "Get set," his father whispered.

"Now!" cried Jeremy's father. "Take them!"

Jeremy felt his body obey. He stood up, holding the gun. In the same instant, the wild ducks saw the gunners and flew. "Shoot!" said something sharply in Jeremy's brain. But up went the mallard higher still, until suddenly he caught the full force of the wind and flew away, out of range.

Stay physically safe

It's crucial to ensure that students memorize their parents' phone numbers and keep them handy in case of an emergency. When crossing roads, they must practice road safety by looking both ways and walking with caution.  In this way, they stay within the designated areas and with the group.

Keep hygiene (卫生) while dining out

Students should be mindful of their food choices and avoid having too much unhealthy food, especially when away from home. It's essential to tell their teacher and bring allergen-free snacks if they have food allergies.  For example, washing hands before and after meals, and using soap in public places to minimize the risk of exposure to germs.

When using public restrooms on their field trips, students should use disposable seat covers or toilet paper to reduce exposure to bacteria. Practicing good restroom hygiene is also important to minimize the risk of spreading illness to others. They can also wear a mask to stay furthest away from sickness, and inform a teacher to receive proper assistance if they feel unwell.

 By sticking to these safety tips, students can have a safe and enjoyable field trip experience.

Loss of slow-wave sleep as you age may increase your risk of developing dementia (痴呆), according to a new study.

"We found that aging was associated with a decline in the amount of the deepest stages of sleep, known as slow-wave sleep. We then found that people with greater declines in slow-wave sleep over time had a higher risk of getting dementia over the next 17 years of follow-up," said Matthew Pase, senior author of the study.

Slow-wave sleep is the third and fourth stages of sleep, which is important for brain health. During this stage, the body removes unwanted or harmful materials from the brain. "For the brain, this deep sleep is thought to be the most restorative," said Dr Richard Isaacson, who wasn't involved in the study.

The researchers wanted to know whether chronic (慢性的) reductions in slow-wave sleep over time are linked to dementia risk in humans and whether dementia-related processes in the brain may contribute to getting less of this type of sleep. They studied 346 people with an average age of 69 and completed two overnight sleep studies—one between 1995 and 1998 and the second between 1998 and 2001—during which their sleep was monitored. The researchers also investigated whether any change in the amount of slow-wave sleep that participants got was associated with developing dementia up to 17 years after they completed the sleep studies. By that time, 52 participants had been diagnosed with dementia. Each percentage decrease in slow-wave sleep per year was linked to a 27 percent increased risk of developing dementia. The rate of slow-wave sleep loss accelerated (加速) from age 60, peaked from ages 75 to 80and slowed afterwards.

"This is an important study yet again showing the impact of quality of sleep on a person's risk of cognitive decline and dementia," Isaacson said. "It's important to not only pay attention to the total amount of sleep a person gets each night, but also monitor sleep quality as best as possible."

What does Beijing's Palace Museum look like at night? Many people don't know the answer to this question, as it closes at around 4:30p.m in winter and 5:00p.m in summer. However, to celebrate the Lantern Festival, Beijing's Palace Museum opened its door to the public after dark——for two nights only. That's a first in 94 years!

Although people could get free tickets on the museum's website, it was difficult to get a ticket. The website even stopped working for a while because too many people visited it at the same time. Zhang Zhifu, a 77-year-old woman, received a ticket from the museum as a gift. "I grew up in Beijing and I visited the Palace Museum every year, but I never got to see it at night, It is truly an honor." She said.

In the past celebrating the Lantern Festival was a tradition for the imperial(皇帝的)family."We want to pass the tradition on and give people more festival experience."Said Shan Jixiong, the head of the Palace Museum. On the night of February24th,2024, about 3,000 visitors spent the Lantern Festival in the Palace Museum.

When I was about 12, I didn't like a girl who liked to point out my shortcomings (缺点). Week by week her list grew: I was very thin, I wasn't a good student, I talked too much, I was too proud, and so on. I tried to bear all this as long as I could. At last, I became very angry. I ran to Daddy with tears in my eyes. 

He listened to me quietly. Then he asked, "Are the things she says true or not? Allen, didn't you ever wonder what you're really like? Go and make a list of everything she said and mark the points that are true. Pay no attention to the other things she said."

I did as he told me. To my great surprise, I discovered that about half the things were true. Some of them I couldn't change (like being very thin), but a good number I could and suddenly I wanted to change. For the first time I got a clear picture of myself.

I brought the list back to Daddy. He refused to take it. "That's just for you," he said. "You know better than anyone else the truth about yourself. But you have to learn to listen, not just close your ears in anger and feel hurt. When something said about you is true, you'll find it will be of help to you. Don't close your ears. Listen to them all, but hear the truth and do what you know is the right thing to do."

Daddy's advice has returned to me at many important moments. In my life, I've never had a better piece of advice.
