The new reported by Coltura offers one of the most detailed pictures yet of Americans' driving habits and gasoline consumption.
The study analyzed GPS data from millions of vehicles and Census Bureau surveys. It builds on earlier reports the group has issued, including a detailed study of high-mileage drivers in California. Here are some of the findings: around 21 million Americans account for 35 percent of the nation's gasoline use from private light-duty vehicles; that's cars, pickup trucks, sport utility vehicles, vans and minivans. That's more gasoline than is burned each year in Brazil, Canada and Russai combined. These drivers are more likely to live in rural areas and small towns, drive an average of 116 miles per weekday and own vehicles that are larger and less fuel-efficient.
" If we want electric vehicles to have the greatest impact, we need to get the highest-mileage drivers behind the wheel," said John Helveston, an assistant professor of engineering at The George Washington University. Helveston is an author of a recent study finding that electric vehicles were driven less than gasoline cars. Recently , lawmakers in California, Maryland, Vermont and Washington have proposed policies to encourage high-mileage drivers to go electric. " we are at the point where we need to start targeting our electric vehicle policies toward the people who are harder to reach" said Phil Ting.
In its latest climate action plan, the state of Maryland proposed an electric vehicle rebate worth up to $5,000 for people who drive long distance. The program, which is not finalized, would require applicants to trade in their older cars and show that they previously had used at least 800 gallons of gasoline per year. Burlington Electric Department, a Vermont utility, will soon test an incentive worth up to $500 aimed at helping high-mileage drivers go electric. It the program works, it could be expanded.

After waking up, you may feel frustrated that you cannot recall the dreams you had last night. Artificial intelligence may be able to help.
Previously, there have been AI models that can turn text into images. They can do this by learning from a large amount of data from both tests and images. This time, researchers from Osaka University in Japan have trained an AI system called Stable Diffusion to re-create images based on people's brain scans, reported Science magazine.
The researchers used an online data set provided by the University of Minnesota, US, which consisted of brain scans from four participant as they each viewed a set of 1,000 photos. The scans were recorded by functional magnetic resonance imaging(fMRI). The AI then learned about the brain activities by analyzing changes in blood flow shown by the fMRI data: when a part of the brain is activated, more blood will flow to it. It then matched the brain activities with the photos. Finally, the researchers tested the AI on additional brain scans from the same participants when they viewed photos of a toy bear, airplane, clock and train. If the person looked at an airplane, for example, the AI would use the brain scan data to create an image of a very blurry airplane. Then , it would turn on the previous "text-to-image" model and improve the quality of the image by feeding itself the keyword "airplane". The final images were "convincing" with about 80 percent of accuracy, according to the researchers.
The new study created a novel approach that incorporates texts and images to "decipher the brain", Ariel Goldstein from Princeton University, US, told Science magazine. In the future, scientists hope that the technology can be used to record imagined thought and dreams or allow people to understand how differently other animals perceive reality.

Joanne Kathleen Rowling entered the world in Chipping Sudbury General Hospital in England,a fitting beginning for someone who would later enjoy making up strange names for people, places and games played on flying broomsticks(扫帚).
Many of her favorite memories center around reading - hearing stories read aloud by her father when she had the measles(麻疹),enjoying the fantastic adventure stories, reveling in the magical world and her favorite story of all,The Little White Horse.Rowling remembers that she always wanted to write and that the first story she actually wrote down, when she was five or six, was a story about a rabbit called Rabbit.
After college she moved to London to work for Amnesty International as a researcher and bilingual secretary. The best thing about working in an office, she has said, was typing up stories on the computer when no one was watching.During this time, on a particularly long train ride from Manchester to London in the summer of 1990, the idea of a boy who is a wizard(男巫) came to her .
He attends a school for wizardry - she could see him very plainly in her mind.By the time the train pulled into King's Cross Station four hours later, many of the characters and the early stages of the plot were fully formed in her head. The story took further shape as she continued working on it in pubs and cafes over her lunch hours. In 1992 Rowling left off working in offices and moved to Portugal to teach English as a Second Language. She worked afternoons and evenings, leaving mornings free for writing.
After her marriage to a Portuguese TV journalist ended in divorce, Rowling returned to Britain with her infant daughter and a suitcase full of Harry Potter notes and chapters. She settled in Edinburgh to be near her sister and set out to finish the book before looking for a teaching job.Wheeling her daughter's carriage around the city to escape their tiny, cold apartment, she would duck into coffee shops to write when the baby fell asleep. In this way she finished the book and started sending it to publishers.
It was rejected several times before she found an London agent, chosen because she liked his name - Christopher Little, who sold the manuscript to Bloomsbury Children's Books.Rowling was working as a French teacher when she heard that her book about the boy wizard had been accepted for publication.Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone was published in June 1997 and achieved almost instant success.

I've been teaching for over thirty years, and Mr. Bath stood out as one of the best teachers to work with. We taught fourth grade together, and I learned a lot from him because he was patient and understanding. He did something amazing with Besta, who was one of the saddest kids I'd ever seen. Besta really didn't like school. He didn't like the kids who always knew the answers, and most importantly, he didn't like himself. During class activities, his classmates would raise their hands, eagerly volunteering to work with one another, but not Besta. When kind-hearted classmates approached him asking if he needed a partner, Besta just avoided eye contact, often saying no. Even with encouragement, Besta seldom participated.
When Besta first came into Mr. Bath's class, he seemed lonely and annoyed. He didn't pay attention to anyone else and just sat down, knocking some books onto the floor. Mr. Bath tried to talk to him and even touched his shoulder, but Besta moved away. Still, Mr. Bath welcomed him warmly, saying,"Hi, Besta. I'm glad you're in my class. We're going to have a great year."Besta looked around, thinking Mr. Bath must be wrong. Why would any teacher want him in their class? While Mr. Bath was happy and relaxed, Besta seemed upset and lost.
But things changed after class that day when Mr. Bath asked Besta to demonstrate his basketball skills. "Hey, Besta," Mr. Bath said, noticing Besta's talent, "You're good at basketball. Let me teach you a special move."It was a trick shot that no one else could do.With Mr. Bath's help, Besta learned it quickly and did really well! Everyone cheered for him.

"... Bathurst?"he said after several3 of struggling. When I started to answer, he told me that he didn't actually need to know. He was practising stammering(口吃)4 , he explained, hoping to become more 5 doing so around strangers.
I6 with excitement. "Are you doing that because it's National Stammering Awareness Day?" I asked, always7 to connect with other people who stammer. When the man asked how I knew that, I said that I grew up with a stammer.
He8 , with a longing look:"And I suppose your stammer has magically9 since then?"
His question gave me pause.
I understood why he assumed this—when compared to his fairly10 stammer, I sounded fluent, stammer-free. But even as we spoke, my stammer had influenced my speech. For example, I'd11 International Stammering Awareness Day as National Stammering Awareness Day to avoid the tricky front vowel sound at the beginning of the word—a sound I12 to struggle with now.
And while it's true that my stammer was more 13 when I was a child, this was partially because I'd since found workarounds(解决办法) for difficult words and sounds, helping me14 the worst of it.
When I answered his question, I settled on the simple15 that I had grown out of my stammer. However, deep inside, I had only learned to deal with what life might offer strategically.

Trapped in a burning high-rise building, you may be waiting for a while until you're rescued. Here are some tips you'd better follow.
An unexpected fire alarm will be unsettling and scary, but panicking won't help. Stay calm, and try to figure out whether the fire is above you, below you, or on your floor. Then feel the door to your unit. If it is cool, you should be able to leave your apartment and head for the nearest exit..
On your way, smoke inhalation(吸入) is the leading cause of death in fires, and it will be practically unavoidable in a burning high-rise building.Meanwhile, cover your mouth and nose with your shirt to avoid smoke as you breathe.
If it's too dangerous to leave your apartment, you still need to protect yourself against smoke coming in. Get to an area where you can close the door and seal the cracks.Once you've done that, you should call the fire department, and report your exact location in the building. Help will be on the way, so try to be patient, and stay calm.
That can further help the firefighters find where you are. Don't break any windows, and don't open your window too much, because it might let smoke in. But if you have it open a little, rescue personnel should still be able to see your signal and get to you safely.
In the face of such situation, remaining calm and sticking to these guidelines can make all the difference.
A. Hang a light-colored cloth out of your window.
B. Test your unit's fire alarm, and check it regularly.
C. Wetting towels and jamming them under doors count.
D. Your decision during that time can be a matter of life or death.
E. So when passing through smoke, you have to crawl on all fours.
F. When leaving, close all doors behind you to starve fire of oxygen.
G. With fire racing towards you, panic often leads to costly mistakes.
