3、New evidence suggests that studying Chinese and learning to write Chinese characters may train cognitive (认知的) abilities, which are not developed by learning other languages and writing systems.
A study conducted by researchers from the UK's Wellcome Trust found that people who speak Chinese use both temporal lobes (颞叶) of their brain to understand the language. This is very different from English-language speakers who use only the left temporal lobe. Speakers of Chinese use intonation (语调) to tell between completely different meanings of particular words, which needs stronger cognitive abilities.
Besides, the practice of handwriting, especially of Chinese characters, will aid the development of motor skills, learning shapes and letters and will keep the mind sharp. Through the use of Magnetic Resonance Imaging, researchers found that neural (神经的) activity in children who practiced printing letters by hand was more strengthened than those who just looked at them. Compared with English, mostly written in line and from left to right, Chinese characters have more complex in structure (复杂的结构). Their writing involves strokes (笔画) in all four directions: up, down, left, and right. The movement of the fingers and hand helps improve neural activity in the working, thinking, and memory of the brain of the learners.
Evidence also suggests that there is a connection between the learning of Chinese and math skills. Researchers from New Zealand noticed that Asian children educated in their own languages appear to have gained a greater understanding of math ideas than English-speaking children. During the natural learning process of Chinese, the student is learning basic math ideas. Math skills are included in character writing because it includes skills such as counting, grouping, ordering, and identifying similarities and differences.
While the research on the relationship between the learning of Chinese and cognition is not yet fully clear, there is good evidence to suggest that learning Chinese tones and characters represents an added challenge to language learning.
(1)、What is the text centred on?A、Why Asian children are better at math test. B、Why Chinese is a difficult language to learn. C、How learning Chinese benefits our cognition. D、How Chinese writing differs from English writing.(2)、What does the study by UK's Wellcome Trust show?A、English speakers should learn Chinese. B、Chinese has more intonations than English. C、Using Chinese needs a higher-level brain activity. D、Mastering different meanings of Chinese is difficult.(3)、Why is learning Chinese beneficial to solving math problems?A、They need quite different cognitive abilities. B、Chinese writing looks like math symbols. C、Chinese children naturally do well in math. D、They share several key cognitive abilities.(4)、How is the text mainly developed?A、By offering supporting findings. B、By comparing former research. C、By discussing problems and solutions. 4、Specializing (专攻) in one sport early in a child's athletic career is often a way to win college scholarships (奖学金) or even go on to be the professionals (职业运动员). However, researchers at the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine's Annual Meeting in Toronto, Canada, say "not so fast".
"Our study, which is the largest study so far examining the topic of single (单一的) sports specialization, helps to understand present situation of specialization in youth sports,"said Patrick S. Buckley, MD of the Rothman Institute at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA. "Our results showed that present high school athletes specialized two years earlier than present college and professional athletes. The results of our study suggest that specialization at a very young age does not increase the possibility of an athlete achieving top position within his/ her sport."
Buckley and his team did a survey to high school, college and professional athletes before their yearly pre-participation physical exam. A total of 3,090 people completed the survey. The age of single sport specialization obviously differed among groups and happened at an age of 12.7 ± 2.4 for high school, 14.8 ± 2.5 for college students and 14.1 ± 2.8 for professional athletes. More than 80% of athletes from all study groups reported that they were glad they had focused on a single sport at the age they did. Present high school and college participants (参与者) also reported more sports-related injury than present professional athletes, some of whom noted that their injuries could be from too much play.
"More research needs to be done to fully understand the benefits and risks related with sport specialization at young ages and establish evidence-based strategies to optimize (使优化) the sport experience for kids while minimizing injury. In addition, we must continue to educate parents, coaches, medical professionals and athletes on the do's or don'ts of safe play to keep kids active for life," said Buckley.
(1)、What does the underlined phrase "not so fast" mean in the first paragraph?A、The study was conducted too quickly. B、Kids needn't rush into specialization early. C、The results of the research came out not fast. D、The researchers were not strict in their work.(2)、What can we learn from the survey on sport specialization?A、High school athletes specialized later. B、Professional athletes had fewer injuries. C、College athletes specialized at about 14.1. D、Most athletes recognized early specialization.(3)、What is the researchers' attitude to early sport specialization?A、Disapproving. B、Supportive. C、Careful. D、Uncaring.(4)、What can be the best title for the text?A、Early Sport Specialization Is Being Challenged B、Sports: a Key to Getting a College Scholarship C、Injuries in Sports Are Becoming a Major Worry D、Early Sport Specialization Leads to Early Success -
5、Seven-year-old Mariam and her younger brother Ilaaf were sleeping peacefully in their home near Haram, Syria, when disaster struck. The 7.8 magnitude earthquake trapped them under the rubble (碎砖), and it was only after a day and a half that rescuers finally reached them. In the video of the rescue, which was a bright sight in the disaster, Mariam can be seen placing her hand gently over her brother's head to protect him from the rubble. Lovingly, she strokes (轻抚) his hair to keep him calm while speaking with the rescue workers.
The rescue workers worked hard to free them. Later, the pair were pulled from the ruins and relaxed on a bed after being checked medically. The kids were then resting comfortably and had been reunited with their entire family. They'll begin the long journey of healing as the family processes what happened.
Their father Mustafa Zuhir Al-Sayed told media that he, his wife, and three children were all sleeping when the earthquake hit. "We felt the ground shaking... and rubble began falling over our head, and we stayed two days under the rubble," he said. "We are feeling like it' s the end of the world." The family was awaiting their fate until others heard them and stepped in to rescue the family.
In the days since the deadly earthquake, rescuers have been working around the clock to rescue those trapped under the rubble. As the total number of deaths rise to over 19,000, every living person and animal pulled from the rubble is being celebrated as a victory (胜利).
But those survivors are still badly in need of help. Even before the natural disaster, the United Nations stated that 70% of Syrians needed humanitarian assistance (人道主义援助). Because of the disaster, that number is expected to reach even higher.
If you would like to help, Global Giving has started a Turkey and Syria earthquake relief fund.

7、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段, 使之构成一篇完整的短文。
George had his eye on a scoring record. He took a deep breath as he stood in the doorway, looking in at the basketball court. The gym was old and small, but it held a long history. Maybe today I'll make history, George thought.
His basketball league was celebrating. Today's championship game marked its 50th anniversary (周年) since the league's first championship.
George looked over the brochure for the anniversary. It listed the winners of each championship game and the top scorers. He stopped suddenly when he read the name of the top scorer from a game 30 years before. He quickly went through the rest of the list. "Look!" he said to his teammate David, showing him the brochure."You see who has the all-time record? My dad! He never told me that."
"24 points," David said. "That's awesome!"
George's best record was 19 points. He was the Badgers' top scorer. "It seems that my dad never showed off something like that,"George said.
When his parents arrived, George brought the brochure over to them. His dad laughed. "I didn't miss a shot in that game. But look at the score. I would have traded every shot for a win,"he said with regret. George hadn't noticed that his dad's team had lost the game just by one point."That was a great group of teammates,"his dad added."You have great teammates in the Badgers, too."
As George warmed up, he was still digesting his father's words. "This will be a struggle every second,"the coach emphasized before they got on court to play."I want to see tough defense, sharp passing, and, above all, smart play as a team."
George was confident he could lead the Badgers to victory, just as he did in their previous games against the Lions. And he played really hard. As the game neared its end, George had already scored 23 points. Another basket would break his father's scoring record.
