On November 2, 2021, my friend Lou messaged me with a challenge: "Amy and I are not buying any new clothes for a year…" My immediate reply was, "Definitely!" This might not be what people who know me would expect. As a child, I once invited a girl to my birthday party just because I had seen her in a beautiful dress. My love for fashion has continued into adulthood.

The year pushed me to embrace better habits. I've always enjoyed looking for second-hand items, but when my only pair of trainers broke in an unfixable way, I urgently needed a replacement. The Vinted app helped me find one almost as quickly as buying new.

I put more effort into making clothes. You quickly realize the labor involved once you start making shorts by yourself. Besides, removing the ease of buying new pushed me towards fixing instead, though a low point was taking a much-loved pair of shoes to a cobbler(修鞋匠), only to be told it'd be "cheaper to buy new".

Even though the year is officially over, I'm hoping to carry on with what I've learned. I'm trying to consume less overall, with a one in, one out' rule with clothes. I've been noting down what clothes I wear each day, and whether I get 30 wears out of it (said to be the amount of times necessary to balance out the carbon emissions(排放) created to make a piece of clothing).

These approaches are what work. for me. But there are loads of different ways to do a fashion challenge. How useful, challenging, or appealing an approach sounds will vary from individual to individual. Whatever you do, roping in friends is recommended. They keep you motivated; they can also share ideas, and possibly clothes!

When I was eight years old, my family moved from Japan to Canada. In Japan, I was a lively girl who enjoyed sharing my dolls and jokes and loved making people laugh with my jokes and creating imaginative games to play with my friends. However, when we settled in Canada, I struggled to adapt. I was born shy and wasn't good at making new friends. During my first days at school I looked at others who were talking in groups happily. How I wish I were one of them!

We settled in a comfortable house with a nice garden where we grew vegetables—my responsibility. While I enjoyed looking after them, I often daydreamed about having a great garden like my classmate Alice's, with its roses. Despite living in the same neighborhood, Alice and I hardly talked.

It was a hurricane that brought Alice and I closer.

The hurricane struck on an afternoon. The gentle wind turned into a heavy storm, and the sky became dark with thick gray clouds. Gradually, the hurricane took shape. My entire family gathered in the bathroom, seeking shelter from the storm. Frightened, I sat close to my mom, knees in my chest. After the storm had passed, our worries and fears were replaced by relief that we were unharmed and that our house had remained undamaged.

As I stepped outside, I witnessed(见证) the extent of the damage the hurricane had caused to our neighborhood. Across the street, a tall tree had fallen, crushing(严重破坏) Alice's garden in front of her yellow house. We hurried over to check on it. Fortunately, none of her family was injured. However, her once-beautiful garden was in ruins, with the fallen tree destroying the roses and debris(碎片) spread everywhere. The roses that Alice used to be proud of were gone.

Animals Protection, Everyone's Duty

The mouth-watering hot pots of Sichuan are as famous overseas as they are in China, and the hot flavour is enough  (heat) up a cold midwinter evening or to let loose rivers of sweat on a summer afternoon. I gave it my first try last night, together  a few local friends. As the soup bubbled slowly over a gas burner in the middle of the table,  (it) surface was covered with a beautiful layer of chillies, Sichuan peppers, spring onions and red oil. Slowly at first, and then faster and faster, we tipped plates of fresh meat, fish and vegetables into the pot. The hot flavour quickened our laughter and conversation,  (make) the meal the perfect way to relax with friends.

Sichuan hot pots are perfect for the damp,  (fog) climate in which they were invented. They are believed to have started off in the late Qing Dynasty as a way for boatmen on the Yangtze River to keep warm during the cold and wet winters. In the beginning, the delicious dish was made (simple) by boiling vegetables, chillies and Sichuan peppers in water. Over time, it  (expand) to include multiple options of soups, vegetables, meats and sauces, appealing to people of different  (taste). What I love best about Sichuan hot pots is that they offer  great opportunity to socialize with friends since a meal can last for hours. I instantly became a big fan of Sichuan hot pots  I'll soon be back for more!

A 14-year-old boy was on the way back home with his cousin when he caught something unexpected: a stranger's wallet. Upon looking inside, Connor was even more 1 to find that it wasn't empty. The wallet was still holding some personal items and 2 .

The number of people dying in natural disasters is lower today than it was in the past.  However, if you can keep your head and find the right place to stay when the ground starts shaking, you might be able to survive.

 The biggest danger is falling pieces. Since earthquakes happen suddenly without warning, you have to think quickly to stay safe. If you are indoors during an earthquake, remember: "drop, cover and hold on."

Drop: When you feel the ground shaking or something crashing, get down on your hands and knees.  Quickly crawl(缓慢行进) under a strong desk or table nearby. Don't try to run downstairs or walk to a safer place because you might fall. If you are in bed, stay there and cover your head with a pillow until the shaking stops.

Cover: Use one hand to cover your neck and head.  If not, move towards a wall inside the building, not the outside walls with windows. Stay on your hands and knees, keeping your hand over your neck for protection.

Hold on: Hold onto your desk or table with one hand while keeping the other over your neck and head. Be ready to move with the desk or table. .

However, if you are outside, driving or at the beach, trying to find something to hide under may not be an option.

Celebrities(名人) have all sorts of strange diets. One of the latest diets among celebrities is the "OMAD". Instead of only fasting on certain days or only eating your meals during a specific time window, people following OMAD eat all their day's calories in one single, large meal.

One study so far has looked at the effect of OMAD in humans. In this study, participants(参与者) were given the same number of calories to eat each day. For half of the study, participants ate these calories in a single meal, before switching(转换) and eating their daily calories in three meals. Each meal pattern was only followed for an 11-day period-not very long at all. The one meal was taken between 5 p. m. and 7 p. m., ensuring a particular flavour to the timing. Only 11 participants completed the study, suggesting a limited results.

When participants ate just one meal per day, they saw a greater reduction in their body weight, indicating a potential association between OMAD and weight loss. However, participants also experienced greater reductions in bone density(密度) when eating just one meal a day, suggesting a need to vary the diet for health. This could lead to reduced muscle function and greater risk of bone fractures(骨折) if the diet was to be followed for a longer period.

While these results may indicate that OMAD could have benefits for some aspects of health, there's still a lot we don't know about it. It will be important for future studies to investigate(调查) the effect of OMAD in a larger number of participants and in other groups of people, as this study only included thin, young adults. It will also be important for studies to look at the effect of OMAD over a longer period of time, and to conduct these trials in a real-life setting.

For companies, seizing the AI opportunity and truly improving efficiency with AI technology has become a test they must face. However, the road for AI to empower the recruitment industry is still very long, with software development and technical advancements continually evolving. AI offers guidelines, and downloading insights from AI systems can enhance decision-making, but human's judgment remains important.

A group of young people in San Antonio is changing plastic bags into sleeping mats(睡垫)for the city's homeless people. Led by Teens Give Back SATX, these young people are making a real difference for those who need help.

"We often forget how lucky we are to have a bed to sleep in at night after a long day of work or school, and how nice it feels. Homeless people have no shelters(避难所) or even no beds," said Addie Roberts from Teens Give Back SATX. With this in mind, Roberts and her friends decided to use old grocery bags to make something valuable for San Antonio's homeless people.

Making these sleeping mats takes time, hard work, and teamwork. Each mat needs about 700 to 900 plastic bags, and it can take 15—20 hours to finish one. Even though the project is a lot of work, the young people are determined to help their community.

"In some weather conditions, these mats can save lives by keeping people off the cold ground," said Rex Brien, Vice President of Emergency Services for SAMMinistries. Just providing a barrier between people and the weather can really help those who have nowhere else to sleep.

In the past year, Teens Give Back SATX has made around 50 mats, showing how committed(尽心尽力的) they are to helping San Antonio's homeless people. As the young people keep working to turn trash(垃圾) into treasure, they invite others to join them and make a difference.
