2、Chaotan One, the world's first commercial power generator that uses supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2), has begun operations in China. This achievement breaks a century-old tradition of using steam for power generation, marking a major improvement in efficiency.
The invention of the steam engine was a first step towards the Industrial Revolution that changed the world. Over the years, the engine's efficiency was further improved through different designs and fuels; however, the medium for doing work remained the same-steam.
Scientists seeking further improvements in power efficiency noticed that a significant portion of energy is wasted generating steam to drive turbines (涡轮机). Water needs to be boiled first and needs to undergo a phase change to generate steam. Scientists have been looking for a better medium to replace steam.
They found this in sCO2. CO2 exists as a gas at room temperature and can be cooled to form dry ice by reducing pressure and lowering temperature. When temperature is raised to 31℃, and pressure is increased to 7.37 MPa, CO2 enters its supercritical state, where it exhibits properties of both a liquid and a gas. In applications such as moving a turbine, this is extremely useful since the gas-like state offers less resistance while the liquid-like state provides greater push power.
The power generation process works like this: The CO2 is first pressurized into a supercritical state. Then the sCO2 passes through a heat exchanger, absorbing heat from an external heat source, and its temperature rises to 400-600℃ with a substantial increase in internal energy. After that, it enters a turbine and expands rapidly, driving it to move at a high speed and transforming thermal (热的) energy into mechanical energy, which is then further turned into electrical energy for output. The CO2 remains in a supercritical state throughout the entire process, with no phase change loss.
The success of the Chaotan One will likely start a new era in power generation, using CO2 as a medium and bypassing the need to transform water into steam.
(1)、What does the author intend to do in paragraph 2?A、Highlight the value of steam. B、Applaud the past contributions. C、Outline the Industrial Revolution. D、State the background of a new discovery.(2)、What is the biggest problem with steam power generation?A、Energy-intensive. B、Labor-demanding. C、Noise-producing. D、Money-consuming.(3)、What plays a key role in the high efficiency of Chaotan One?A、The durability of turbines. B、The quick commercialization of generators. C、The easy availability of CO2. D、The continuity of CO2's supercritical state.(4)、What is true about supercritical carbon dioxide (sCO2) according to the text?A、It exists only as a pure gas when in its supercritical state. B、It can reach its supercritical state at room temperature and normal pressure. C、It combines the low resistance of a gas-like state with the strong power of a liquid-like state. D、It undergoes a phase change from gas to liquid during the power generation process. -

5、There are some disabled people in the world who fight an unseen battle within themselves every day. They never cry and1, but with a big smile on their face. I call such people2 because they know the art of living life.
Six-and-a-half years back, I was in a car accident. The driver slept, and the car fell in the ditch, as a result of which, I suffered3 injuries: the radius and ulna(槎骨和尺骨) on my right arm were4; three vertebrae of my backbone were crushed. But what5 my life and personality completely was the spinal cord(脊髓) injury. We did try to find an ambulance but6, so I was thrown in the back of a pother jeep, and then7 to the nearby hospital. Unfortunately, I was8 for there was no first aid. After several attempts, I finally ended up in a comparatively better hospital, where I9 three major and two minor surgeries.
The days I spent in the hospital were10. I was in severe pain, especially11, I was fed up with wearing the hospital gown, looking at the white walls, sitting idle. I was so12 that I felt life was almost pointless and13. But then I realized that instead of crying for what I had lost, I had people around who were concerned about me. Thus, there came the best14 that I took in my entire life — painting, a magic way to color my life.
That's how this15 helped me in exploring an artist in me and how this art kept me alive through the whole journey.

6、You've most likely heard the news by now: A car-commuting, desk-bound, TV-watching lifestyle can be harmful to our health. All the time that we spend rooted in the chair is linked to increased risks of so many deadly diseases that experts have named this modern-day health epidemic the "sitting disease".
Sitting for too long slows down the body's metabolism(新陈代谢)and the way enzymes break down our fat reserves, raising both blood sugar levels and blood pressure. Small amounts of regular activity, even just standing and moving around, throughout the day is enough to bring the increased levels back down. And those small amounts of activity add up — 30 minutes of light activity in two or three-minute bursts can be just as effective as a half-hour block of exercise. But without that activity, blood sugar levels and blood pressure keep creeping up, steadily damaging the inside of the arteries (动脉) and increasing the risk of diabetes, heart disease, stroke, and other serious diseases. In essence, fundamental changes in biology occur if you sit for too long.
But wait, you're a runner. You needn't worry about the harm of a sedentary lifestyle because you exercise regularly, right? Well, not so fast. Recent studies show that people spend an average of 64 hours a week sitting, whether or not they exercise 150 minutes a week as recommended by World Health Organization(WHO). Regular exercisers, furthermore, are found to be about 30 percent less active on days when they exercise. Overall, most people simply aren't exercising or moving around enough to balance out all the harm that can result from sitting nine hours or more a day.
Scared straight out of your chair? Good. The remedy is as simple as standing up and taking activity breaks.
(1)、Which is the best way to bring down high blood sugar level and blood pressure?A、Doing exercise for 150 minutes or more every week. B、Getting rid of the habit of car commuting and TV watching. C、Standing or moving around for at least two minutes every day. D、Interrupting sitting time with light activity as often as possible.(2)、What does the word "sedentary" in the third paragraph most likely mean?A、Inactive. B、Risky. C、Overloaded. D、Unbalanced.(3)、Which of the following may be inferred about those who do serious exercise?A、They always meet the exercise standard recommended by WHO. B、They tend to stand or move less on the days when they work out. C、They usually remove all the harmful effects of sitting for too long. D、They generally spend less time sitting than those who do not exercise.(4)、What is the passage mainly, about?A、The challenges of the modern lifestyle. B、The effect of regular activity on our body. C、The reasons for the spread of a modern epidemic. D、The threat to our health from long hours of sitting. -
7、Thanksgiving is almost here, which means many families are getting ready to enjoy a tradition that goes back hundreds of years: baking and eating delicious pie. Two classic desserts will battle it out at holiday tables. Is pumpkin pie better than apple pie?
Yes—pumpkin is perfect
Three reasons why pumpkin pie is better than apple pie
1. As one of America's first crops, pumpkin has become fall's signature flavor since the early 18th century. Even 300 years ago, Americans knew it was the best pie.
2. With its warm, comforting mix of cinnamon (肉桂), nutmeg (豆蔻), and other spices, delicious pumpkin pie gives you perfect bites that melt in your mouth, which simply can't be beaten.
3. As a bonus, pumpkins are packed full of vitamins and nutrients that are good for your body. So cut a perfectly shaped slice of pumpkin goodness and dig in.
No—apple pie all the way
Three reasons why pumpkin pie is not better than apple pie
1. Apple pie is just about as old as our country and even appeared in America's first cookbook. Have you heard the expression "It's as American as apple pie"? No one says that about pumpkin pie!
2. There are countless variations on the classic, with different spices and flavorings, dried fruits and nuts, and different crusts (酥皮). Apple pie is the clear winner for people who love the balance of fruit and buttery pie crust.
3. To quote another expression, "An apple a day keeps the doctor away." That means apples are nutritious and help keep us healthy.
Now that you've read a bit more about this issue, click here to vote in our debate. Vote YES if you think pumpkin pie is better than apple pie or NO if you don't. We'll publish the results next week.

10、阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Sharing is an essential part of our daily lives. When you share your experiences with your peers, they are more likely to feel comfortable sharing their own. If the thought of sharing your experiences holds you back because you believe that you don't have big experiences to share, then, you should get over it right away because all experiences are equally valuable. Here are the tips to make your sharing experience more effective.
Make sure that you go into as much detail as possible. Try to picturise your experience for others so that they can just feel like you do. Share with them what you feel and why you feel that way. Start by sharing when you had the idea for what you are sharing. Then share what happened or what you thought. After that, share why it is important to you or why you think the way you do.
Explain the words. Would you understand every word of your dialogue if you were from another community? If not, consider defining the jargon (术语). As an alternative to saying to your global peers, "I love Kathakali and you should definitely watch it someday." Say something like: "I love Kathakali, which is a form of folk dance, in which the dancers present a drama wearing unique masks. You should watch it someday."
Be fearless. While sharing an experience, you do not have to be embarrassed, afraid to open up. For example, suppose you are discussing gender equality, and some of your peers support the idea that women can only work in certain professions, and you disagree with them. Then, instead of fearing what people would think if you said something unconventional, just say it.
Now that you have read my tips for sharing, go share your own experiences, ideas, and thoughts with the rest of the world. Remember that no experience is too big or too small. Whatever you share would be unique and new to someone who has had different experiences or has different perspectives from you. So, continue to share.
A. Share the details.
B. Because it surely does!
C. Make sense of your experiences.
D. All experiences matter in their own way.
E. You have every right to be brave and frank out.
F. Think about this from another person's perspective.
G. There are no restrictions on sharing what matters to you.

11、For thousands of years, there's been a common belief in Western culture about emotions that they come on fast and uncontrollable. But a new study that has looked at what's going on inside the brain and the body during specific emotional states has found that the theory doesn't hold up.
For example, you're walking in the woods, and you see a bear. You recognize it's a bear. Then what happens?
Previously, researchers thought that the fear touches off a series of physical and emotional responses so that your heart rate rises, your breath quickens and the adrenaline (肾上腺素)levels increase in your body and you are well-prepared to run away and live another day.
But the new study has drawn a totally different conclusion: The brain recognizes a bear, and then that recognition leads to all the physiological responses. In other words, to make the decision, your brain takes into account your past experiences and your memories. This step is key. For instance, if your past experiences with bears come largely through news reports of attacks, then your brain will likely interpret your physiological responses as fear. This emotion will help drive you away from the bear in order to live another day.
But what if you are a hunter? And your past experience with a bear ended in a wonderful feast for you and your neighbors. Then your brain may interpret the physiological responses as excitement. This positive emotion will drive you toward the bear in order to bring home dinner.
The study concludes that the chosen emotion not only helps the brain make sense of these signals, but it also helps the brain predict better the immediate future and how to handle the situation at hand.
Understanding how these predictions work helps us realize that emotions aren't uncontrollable reactions to particular situations. Next week, we'll see how to control our emotions in different situations.
(1)、According to the common belief in Western culture, what is our first reaction to a bear?A、We will feel frightened. B、Our heart will beat very slowly. C、We will control our breath. D、Less adrenaline will be produced.(2)、What will help us put our emotions under control according to the new study?A、Our personality. B、Our daily needs. C、Our experiences. D、Our nerve system.(3)、What is the author's purpose in writing the text?A、To prove a theory right. B、To introduce a new discovery. C、To provide some advice. D、To call for wildlife protection.(4)、Where is the text most probably taken from?A、A news report. B、A textbook. C、A test result. D、A lecture. -
12、Researchers in Australia are using a robot powered by artificial intelligence (AI) to improve the way farmers raise cows: The robot has four wheels and is painted red. Researchers have named the robot SwagBot. It can drive by itself and move cows from one field to another based on the condition of the soil and plant life.
Researchers said SwagBot is becoming the world's first "smart cow." They believe it can make cow farming more efficient (高效的) and put less pressure on the environment.
SwagBot was first put into use in 2016. At that time, it could only move around fields where cows were eating grass. Over time, scientists have added sensors (传感器) and AI systems to the robot. These systems help SwagBot judge the health, type, and thickness of grasses and plants in fields and observe the health of the cow.
The robot uses this information to move cows to the best areas for eating grass. The goal to move cows to a new grass area before they can damage (毁坏) the grass in a particular field. This can prevent damage to the soil. The robot can also send the information back to farmers.
Australia is one of the world's biggest exporters (出口商) of beef. It has around 30 million cows spreading across large areas that are often dry. As a result, some grass areas are of low quality and do not have a lot of grass.
Farmers carefully assess how many animals their land can support. However, many farmers have little control over where the animals eat grass within large areas of land. Overeating can lead to poor soil that supports plant and animal life.
SwagBot is still in development. It is part of a growing movement in agriculture towards robotics. Farming experts hope robots can make production more efficient. Robots can also reduce the need for workers in places, like Australia, where finding workers in areas with a low population can be difficult.
(1)、What about SwagBot does the author want to tell us in paragraph 3?A、Its special appearance. B、Its cost. C、Its continuous improvement. D、Its influence.(2)、What's the purpose in using the robot to manage cows?A、To bring comfort to cows. B、To control the number of cows. C、To prevent other animals attacking cows. D、To avoid having harmful effect on grassland.(3)、What may be the future of agriculture in Australia?A、It will introduce more robots. B、It will increase the areas for raising cows. C、Fewer people will depend on agriculture for a living. D、Traditional methods will be used to check cows' health.(4)、Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A、Australia's Grassland Is in Danger B、Robot Leads Cows to Greener Fields C、Science Is Changing the Cow Industry D、Australia Is One of the Biggest Beef Exporters -
13、When I was a child, my grandfather's garden was a world of wonder. I watched him turn fallen branches, old cans, and broken tools into lovely furniture and lively sculptures. He taught me that waste was just unused treasure, and his belief has guided my life ever since.
Now I work as an art teacher at a primary school. I started a "Trash to Art" club to pass on this spirit. Each week, my students and I collect discarded items – cardboard boxes, plastic bottles, used paper, and old fabric – that would otherwise be thrown away. We clean, cut, and design them into practical or artistic works: pencil holders, flower pots, small toys, and even wall decorations.
At first, many students considered waste dirty or useless. They were used to buying new things and throwing them away without a second thought. But as they worked, their ideas changed. They began to see beauty in ordinary objects and pride in creating with their own hands. One student even told me it was the most fun class he had ever taken.
Our projects also carry a green message. By reusing waste, we cut down on rubbish and save natural resources. The school has set up special recycling corners for our club, and more students have joined us. Some even take the habit home, encouraging their families to join in waste reduction.
Last month, we held an exhibition of our works. Parents and visitors were surprised to see how waste could become such lovely pieces. For me, the greatest joy is not the beautiful works, but watching my students grow into creative, environmentally friendly thinkers. My grandfather's simple lesson lives on in them.
(1)、Why did the author start the "Trash to Art" club?A、To raise money for the school. B、To teach students to reuse waste. C、To show his own design skills. D、To offer after‑school care.(2)、What change happened to the students?A、They stopped using new products. B、They learned to value everyday waste. C、They preferred buying beautiful toys. D、They became interested in gardening.(3)、Which of the following best describes the author?A、Creative and responsible. B、Honest and humorous. C、Brave and confident. D、Polite and easy‑going.(4)、What is the influence of the author's grandfather?A、He made the author love gardening. B、He taught the author to collect waste. C、He shaped the author's life attitude. D、He helped start the art club. -

15、阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
The community library was Megan's peaceful kingdom, a place of quiet whispers and turning pages. Every summer vacation, she worked as a student volunteer, feeling responsible for protecting this quiet space.
Lately, a boy named Liam had become her challenge. Liam wasn't rude — he just couldn't sit still. Like clockwork, he would get up to "stretch his legs, "pacing between the bookshelves. Sometimes he'd accidentally knock over a chair. Once, absorbed in a picture book, he let out a loud"Whoa!"when he saw a giant dinosaur filled the page. In the silence, each sound drew looks from other readers.
Yesterday, when Megan walked over and reminded him gently again, Liam's face turned red. "I'm really sorry, "he whispered sincerely. "I don't mean to. I just. I really like being here. "She believed him. She had noticed that Liam was a curious explorer of books. He would pull out a book on dinosaurs, reading with intense focus for a few minutes, then move on to another about volcanoes or space rockets. He just loved the library.
Megan went back to her office. A note on the head librarian's desk caught her eye. It read, "More Lively Reading Activities? Book sharing? Acting?" Seeing this, Megan suddenly remembered the librarian had mentioned she could feel free to use the garden at the back of the library. It was a place where some unused items were stored — some old chairs, folding tables, all piled up gathering dust under a large tree. At the time, Megan hadn't thought much about it. But now, the thoughts of directing Liam's energy and making use of the garden connected in her mind. Perhaps the solution wasn't to quiet Liam down, but to give his energy and love for books a positive stage, right here in their own library.
An idea for a "Garden Reading Corner"project, aimed at young readers, began to take shape. The next morning, she found Liam among the bookshelves. "Want to do something really cool?"she said, her voice low but excited. Liam did not answer at once, but the eager light in his eyes said everything.

18、I still remember the day I bought my "nice" notebook. It was a leather-bound journal with cream-colored pages. I was sure it would make me the type of person who journals regularly, and who1 beautiful thoughts. But it didn't work.
That gorgeous notebook sat2 for months. When I finally opened it, I hesitated. The pages felt too delicate and too3 to waste on my messy handwriting and ideas. So I4 it. Instead, I grabbed an old, ugly composition notebook with a5 cover and dog-eared corners. I started to6 it with everything: morning pages, random thoughts and reminders. This is surprisingly7. I actually wrote. Every day. Without exception.
The psychology is real. When we8 something too much, we place limits around it, feeling it is "too good". But the ugly notebook carries no such9 . It has been used. It tells me, "This is a10 for thinking and living, not a museum piece."
Here's the thing:11 notebooks are idea incubators (孵化器) . With the pressure off, you experiment more. You try things that might12. And in that freedom, bad ideas I was13 embarrassed about gradually evolved into work I'm proud of. And that's where the real work of creation happens.
The best notebook is never the most beautiful one. It's the one you'll actually14. Because the magic happens in the15, not in perfect pages.
Your ugly notebook is waiting.

19、I put on a headset, and within seconds I am somewhere else. Ice sheets float on dark water. Wind brushes past my ears, sharp and restless. In the distance, mountains glow (发光) under the moonlight. Moments later, I find myself inside a museum, leaning close to a painting I have never seen in real life. This is the promise of virtual reality (VR): a world delivered to us without leaving home.
There is much to appreciate in this form of travel. There is no need to consider weather conditions, health issues or financial pressure. You may enter distant places at any moment and leave just as freely. For those restricted by schedule, health, or income, VR quietly removes barriers that traditional travel often sets in place.
Travelers wander through unfamiliar streets, sample local dishes, and engage face-to-face with people shaped by different traditions. Such encounters awaken the senses and create lasting memories. More importantly, they change how places feel to us, not just how we understand them.
This distinction is clear, because learning about a destination is not the same as being there. Virtual travel offers designed scenes and programmed sensations, but it remains carefully controlled. Real travel, by contrast, is shaped by unpredictability. In those unplanned moments, understanding becomes lived rather than recorded.
Virtual reality will undoubtedly continue to evolve, enriching how we preview journeys and imagine distant worlds. Still, it cannot replace actual presence. Travel is not simply about seeing farther; it is also about feeling where you stand.
A. I am not moving, yet I am traveling.
B. Yet real travel leaves a deeper mark.
C. My feet ache as my journey stretches across the day.
D. Virtual journeys are convenient, time-saving, and widely accessible.
E. Some knowledge, it seems, only arrives when your feet are on the ground.
F. It demands choices, adaptation, and constant awareness of the unexpected.
G. But the convenience may gradually weaken our desire to explore the real world.

20、When you rub (摩擦) a balloon on your skin, it produces electricity — a familiar example of charge separation (电荷分离), a process in which opposite charges are separated, creating electric potential. Similarly, raindrops striking a narrow tube create a tiny yet significant burst of energy. Now, researchers from the National University of Singapore (NUS) have tapped into this effect to generate electricity using rain-like droplets.
Conventional hydropower (水力发电) relies on large water flows, which only work in places like rivers. For smaller, slower flows, researchers have explored charge separation. They use a tube to let water flow through it continuously. Charges gather on the surface that the water touches. In this way, researchers can collect charges, but it is far from effective.
To solve this problem, the NUS team built a special device. At both ends of the device — the top of the newly-designed tube (about 2 millimeters in width), and the water-collecting cup at the bottom — electrical wires were placed to harvest charges. First, water is released from a metal needle, forming rain-like droplets. When these droplets enter the tube, their impacts create "plug flow," in which the water forms mini columns separated by air gaps. This flow is crucial because it allows more surface contact and more time for charges to build up, generating up to 100, 000 times more charge separation than continuous flow. As charged droplets exit the tube and fall into the cup, charges build up in the water, creating an electric current. In tests, four tubes produced enough electricity to power 12 LED lights continuously for 20 seconds.
According to the study's lead author, this model shows how rain can be used to generate clean electricity effectively and sustainably, especially in rainy places such as Singapore. Its potential is enormous, as it offers an alternative energy source even in cities. Imagine a rain collection device on your roof, producing small amounts of electricity whenever it rains — a small step for a raindrop, but a giant leap for sustainable energy technology.
