J-20 fighter jets to escort Y-20 returning CPV martyrs home from S.Korea
(文章来源:Global Times)
Making 2023 the 10th consecutive year that the remains of the Chinese People's Volunteers (CPV) martyrs have been returned from South Korea, 25 more martyrs and their possessions will be repatriated to China this week by Y-20 large transport aircraft escorted by J-20 stealth fighter jets. Representatives from the Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan regions will be invited to attend this year's burial ceremony, aiming to further strengthen patriotic education and foster a sense of national unity.
The Chinese Air Force's Y-20 took off on Tuesday to pick up the 10th batch of national heroes who fought bravely in the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea (1950-53).
Upon returning on Thursday, two J-20 stealth fighter jets will escort the Y-20 after the latter enters Chinese airspace, according to China Central Television. With "double 20s" flying high in the sky, Chinese are paying a unique tribute and heartfelt remembrance to the martyrs.
A burial ceremony will take place on Friday at the Cemetery for Martyrs of the Chinese People's Volunteers in Shenyang, Northeast China's Liaoning Province, according to China's Ministry of Veterans Affairs.
As of last year, China has welcomed back from South Korea the remains of 913 CPV martyrs who died in the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea for nine consecutive years, said Li Jingxian, a senior official at the Ministry of Veterans Affairs. More will continue to be transferred back to their homeland as they are discovered, he noted.
China has made special arrangements this year upon the 70th anniversary of the victory of the War to Resist US Aggression and Aid Korea.
Representatives from Hong Kong and Macao special administrative regions as well as Taiwan island will also attend the ceremony with an aim to further strengthen patriotic education and unite national sentiments.
The possessions of the martyrs have all been carefully managed after measurement, photography and registration. Electronic archives have been established and assigned to specific personnel for proper safekeeping.
Meanwhile, the martyrs' items are being displayed in various exhibitions, depicting the arduous journey of the war and promoting the unyielding spirit of the CPV.
"In recent years, we have been analyzing the habits, hobbies, and stories behind the martyrs' belongings while organizing them, with the aim to recreate the original battlefield and depict the living conditions and war scenes of CPV soldiers," Li said.
Elaborating on family tracing for the martyrs, Li noted that relevant efforts have been launched since 2020. Currently, the DNA identification of all the 913 remains has been completed across the nine batches. By combining the relics, history, and the DNA results, active efforts are being made to find their relatives and reunite them with their families.
China and Russia sent delegations to North Korea in July to mark the 70th anniversary of the armistice of the Korean War.
Warning today's turbulent world shares similarities with the world when the Cold War began, experts said countries including the US and its allies should learn from the lessons of history to safeguard the hard-won peace together rather than adding to the existing tensions with more military acts and provocation.

Researchers at the University of Washington created a new web app, Self-Talk with Superhero Zip, aimed to help children develop skills like self-awareness and emotional management.
At first, some parents were wary: In a world of Siri and Alexa, they are skeptical that the makers of such technologies are putting children's welfare first.
In Self-Talk with Superhero Zip, a chatbot guided pairs of siblings through lessons. The UW team found that, after speaking with the app for a week, most children could explain the concept of supportive self-talk and apply it in their daily lives. And kids who'd engaged in negative self-talk before the study were able to turn that habit positive.
The UW team published its findings in June at the 2023 Interaction Design and Children conference. The app is still a prototype (雏形) and is not yet publicly available. Previous studies have shown children can learn various tasks and abilities from chatbots. Yet little research explores how chatbots can help kids effectively acquire socioemotional skills.
"There is room to design child-centric experiences with a chatbot that provide fun and educational practice opportunities," said senior author Alexis Hiniker, an associate professor in the UW Information School. "Over the last few decades, television programs like ‘Sesame Street,' ‘Mister Rogers,' and ‘Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood' have shown that it is possible for TV to help kids cultivate socioemotional skills. We asked: Can we make a space where kids can practice these skills in an interactive app? We wanted to create something useful and fun— a ‘Sesame Street' experience for a smart speaker."
The length of these effects isn't clear, researchers note. The study spanned just one week and the tendency for survey participants to respond in ways that make them look good could lead kids to speak positively about the app's effects.
"Our goal is to make the app accessible to a wider audience in the future," said lead author Chris (Yue) Fu, a UW doctoral student in the iSchool. "We're exploring the integration of large language models — the systems that power tech like ChatGPT — into our prototype and we plan to work with content creators to adapt existing socioemotional learning materials into our system. The hope is that these will facilitate more prolonged and effective interventions."
(1)、What can we learn about Self-Talk?A、It encouraged kids to engage in positive talking. B、It could help kids explain complicated concepts. C、It could be already downloaded from UW's website. D、It was welcomed by parents like Siri and Alexa.(2)、"Sesame Street" is mentioned in this passage to show ____ of Self-Talk.A、The primary function. B、The promising prospect. C、The new-found popularity. D、The historical background.(3)、Which may the follow-up research include?A、Larger amounts of kinds of languages. B、More characters with different background. C、New technology adopted like ChatGPT. D、Longer studies in more natural settings.(4)、It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the Self-Talk will ____.A、Adapt socioemotional material and reform the education system. B、Explore powerful technology and improve its effectiveness. C、Promote socioemotional learning and provide ongoing support. D、Combine large language models and lengthen its service time. -

Most of us have an unclear memory of learning about the Pythagorean Theorem (勾股定理) many years ago in math class.
If you're anything like us writer-types, that 2,000-year-old theorem went in one ear, and immediately out the other! But for two students at St. Mary's Academy in New Orleans, Louisiana, the theorem presented a challenge they simply couldn't resist taking on. As a reminder for those of us who aren't potential mathematicians, the Pythagorean Theorem is the basis of trigonometry (三角学). For over 2,000 years, math scholars have stated it's impossible to use trigonometry to prove the Pythagorean Theorem because doing so would be circular logic. In other words, an idea cannot prove itself.
Calcea Johnson and Ne'Kiya Jackson have challenged that concept in their new abstract. The two high school seniors recently presented their abstract in front of the American Mathematical Society (AMS) at their annual southeastern conference. Unsurprisingly, they were the only teenagers there in a sea of math scholars! Their abstract states, "We present a new proof of the Pythagorean Theorem which is based on a fundamental result in trigonometry." In plain English, that means Calcea and Ne'Kiya proved the theorem using trigonometry after all, and without using circular reasoning.
How did a pair of teenagers solve a riddle that has stumped so many mathematicians before them? Countless math scholars can do nothing facing this theorem. According to Calcea and Ne'Kiya, they have their teachers to thank!
The St. Mary's school slogan is "No Excellence Without Hard Labor", and they mean it! Both girls say their teachers push them to think outside the box and encourage them to discover new concepts. "We have really great teachers," Ne'Kiya said with a smile. Calcea is proud of herself and her friend for doing something no other high school students have ever done.
(1)、What does the author think of the Pythagorean Theorem in paragraph 2?A、It has too short a history. B、It's unattractive to writers. C、It's too academic to understand. D、It needs to be proved once more.(2)、What did Calcea and Ne'Kiya do about the theorem in front of the AMS?A、They proved it using trigonometry. B、They showed it was based on trigonometry. C、They said circular reasoning couldn't prove it. D、They introduced a kind of theory similar to it.(3)、What does the underlined word "stumped" in paragraph 4 mean?A、Helped. B、Excited. C、Puzzled. D、Changed.(4)、What do Calcea and Ne'Kiya's teachers ask them to do?A、Think creatively. B、Act independently. C、Study curiously. D、Live thankfully. -

Gigantopithecus blacki extinct after failure to adapt to environmental changes
(文章来源:Global Times)
Chinese, Australian and US researchers have revealed more about the extinction of the Gigantopithecus blacki great ape in their latest joint study, which was published in Nature on Thursday. The study found that Gigantopithecus blacki became extinct between 295,000 and 215,000 years ago due to being unable to adapt its food preferences and behavior, as well as being vulnerable to the changing climate, the Global Times learned from the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology (IVPP) and the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS).
With a height of about three meters and weight of about 250 kilograms, Gigantopithecus blacki is the largest primate that has ever existed on the Earth. It is a very distant human ancestor. Gigantopithecus blacki once roamed the karst plains of southern China and became extinct before humans arrived in the region, leaving around 2,000 fossilized teeth and four jawbones among the only signs of their existence. "The story of Gigantopithecus blacki is an enigma in paleontology - how could such a mighty creature go extinct at a time when other primates were adapting and surviving? The unresolved cause of its disappearance has become a mystery in the field," said Zhang Yingqi, a Chinese paleontologist from the IVPP and co-lead author of the study.
According to Zhang, the IVPP has been excavating for Gigantopithecus blacki remains in southern China for more than 10 years, but could figure out the cause of its extinction through consistent environmental analysis. Definitive evidence revealing the story of the giant ape's extinction came from a large-scale evidence collecting project on 22 cave sites spread across a wide region of South China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. "It's a major challenge to present a defined cause for the extinction of a species. At first, we should figure out the exact time when a species disappears from the fossil record so that we can conduct an environmental reconstruction and behavior assessment," said Kira Westaway, a geochronologist associate professor from Macquarie University who is another co-lead author of the study. "Without robust dating, you are simply looking for clues in the wrong places," Westaway said.
Six different dating techniques were applied to analyze the cave sediments and fossils. Luminescence dating, which measures a light-sensitive signal found in the burial sediments that encased the Gigantopithecus blacki fossils, was the primary technique, supported by uranium series (US) and electron-spin resonance (US-ESR) dating of the Gigantopithecus blacki teeth themselves. By direct-dating the fossil remains, the scientists confirmed the fossils' age aligns with the luminescence sequence in the sediments where they were found, providing a comprehensive and reliable chronology for the extinction of Gigantopithecus blacki.
Using detailed pollen analysis, fauna reconstructions, stable isotope analysis of the teeth and a detailed analysis of the cave sediments at a micro level, the team established the environmental conditions when Gigantopithecus blacki went extinct. Then, using trace element and dental microwear mark textural analysis (DMTA) of the ape's teeth, the team built a comparison model between when it was flourishing and when it was close to extinction. According to scientists, tooth tissue contains rich information related to species' feeding behavior that can be used to interpret in depth whether they are facing survival pressure, the diversity of their food, the regularity of their feeding behavior and their activity range.
The findings show Gigantopithecus blacki went extinct between 295,000 and 215,000 years ago, much earlier than previously assumed. Before that time, Gigantopithecus blacki flourished in a rich and diverse forest environment. However, by 700,000 to 600,000 years ago, the increased seasonality in the forest led to diversification of the environment and change in the structure of the forest communities. Orangutans (genus Pongo) - a close relative of Gigantopithecus blacki - adapted in size, behavior and habitat preferences as conditions changed. However, Gigantopithecus blacki relied on a less nutritious food source when its preferences were unavailable. At the same time, they grew larger and bulkier, and their geographical range for feeding was greatly reduced. Therefore, its population faced long-term survival pressure and continued to shrink, eventually becoming extinct.
It was Gigantopithecus blacki's stubbornness and conservatism that led to its demise, Zhang noted. As the specter of a sixth mass extinction looms over us, we urgently need to understand why species become extinct. As with the story of the extinction of Gigantopithecus blacki, exploring unresolved extinction events in the past will help us to understand the resilience of primates and the fate of other large animals in the past and into the future, Westaway noted.
(1)、According to the joint study published in Nature, what were the primary factors that led to the extinction of Gigantopithecus blacki?A、Lack of suitable habitats. B、Inability to adapt food preferences and behavior. C、Competition with other primate species. D、Overhunting by humans.(2)、How did the researchers determine the age of Gigantopithecus blacki fossils?A、By analyzing the size and weight of the fossils. B、Through detailed pollen analysis. C、Using luminescence dating and other dating techniques. D、By studying the geographical range of Gigantopithecus blacki.(3)、What environmental changes contributed to Gigantopithecus blacki's extinction?A、Increase in seasonality in the forest. B、Adaptation of orangutans in size, behavior, and habitat preferences. C、Availability of a less nutritious food source. D、Growth of Gigantopithecus blacki population. -

Soaring to 29, 035 feet, the famous Mount Everest had long been considered unclimbable due to the freezing weather, the obvious potential fall from cliffs and the effects of the extreme high altitude, often called "mountain sickness." But that was to be changed by Edmund Hillary.
When he was invited to join the British Everest expedition in 1953, Edmund Hillary was a highly capable climber. The glacier-covered peaks in his hometown in New Zealand proved a perfect training ground for the Himalaya. It was his fourth Himalayan expedition in just over two years and he was at the peak of fitness.
On May 28, 1953, Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay, an experienced Sherpa (夏尔巴人) set out and reached the South Summit by 9 a. m. next day. But after that, the ridge (山脊) slightly fell before rising suddenly in a rocky spur (尖坡) about 17 meters high just before the true summit. The formation is difficult to climb due to its extreme pitch because a mistake would be deadly. Scratching at the snow with his ax, Hillary managed to overcome this enormous obstacle, later to be known as the Hillary Step.
At 11:30 a. m, the two men found themselves standing at the top of the world. "Not until we were about 50 feet of the top was I ever completely convinced that we were actually going to reach the summit." Hillary later recounted, "Of course I was very, very pleased to be on the summit, but my first thought was a little bit of surprise. After all, this is the ambition of all mountaineers."
Emerging as the first to summit Mount Everest, Hillary Hillary continued by helping explore Antarctica, and establishing the Himalayan Trust (信托基金), through which he provided a number of beneficial services to the Himalayan peoples. He also a sizeable legacy that mountain climbers have chased ever since. As a young climber said, "It was not just Hillary and Tenzing that reached the summit of Mount Everest. It was all of humanity. Suddenly, all of us could go."

Quietly sitting there reading, I found myself suddenly listening to the train guard's announcements. Train travelers will surely agree that when the guard makes an announcement, whether it's the recorded message or the guard's message, few people listen to it, because it's often quite dull or hard to understand. This one was different. I noticed that other passengers appeared to be listening, too. Not only that, everyone was smiling!
Why was so much attention being paid to this message? As best I can recall the guard said something along these lines, "Good Morning Ladies, Gentlemen and Children, this is the 7: 35 a.m. from Penrith to Central and you'll be pleased to know that we are right on time. And what a lovely morning it is in Sydney today. The sun is shining, birds are singing, and all's right with the world. I trust you have a great day wherever you're going. Thanks for catching my train this morning and I hope to see you again soon."
Quite a few people (obviously previous strangers) started talking to one another about the guards excellent message and how good it had made everyone feel. I started thinking about this, and then I found the young guard and said "Were you the guard on the 7: 35 a.m. from Penrith?" The guard seemed a bit stunned at first, replying, "Yes, yes." "Well, I really appreciate your announcement. Thank you for your extremely good message, which gave me and the other passengers such a good start to the day. Please keep doing it." I said.
There are two messages for me in what happened that day. Firstly, when people are happy in their work it shows in what they do and say. Secondly, the story attaches much importance to the benefits that accumulate from thanking people for something they've done, particularly when it's not expected. Can you imagine the conversation that guard would have when he got home?
(1)、Why do few train travelers listen to the announcements?A、The messages are unattractive. B、The guard's voice is not clear. C、They usually feel sleepy. D、They are absorbed in books.(2)、What does the underlined word "stunned" in Paragraph 3mean?A、Patient. B、Cautious. C、Surprised. D、Excited.(3)、What might the guard talk about with his family when he got home?A、The beautiful weather. B、The recorded message. C、The train from Penrith. D、The unexpected appreciation.(4)、Which of the following can be the best title for the text?A、An Intelligent Guard. B、A Boring Train Story. C、A Different Train Announcement. D、A Lovely Morning in Sydney. -

Scores of French love letters from the mid-18th century have been opened and studied for the first time since they were written. The letters – sent to French sailors by wives, siblings and parents – never made it to their intended recipients, but they offer rare insight into the lives of families affected by war.
Sent between 1757-58 during the Seven Years War, the letters were mostly addressed to the crew of the Galatée warship, and the French postal administration forwarded them from port to port in hopes of reaching the sailors. But when the British Navy captured the Galatée in April 1758, French authorities forwarded the batch of letters to England.
The 104 letters are written on heavy, expensive paper, and some have red wax seals. Renaud Morieux, the historian of the University of Cambridge, discovered them in the digital remainders of Britain's National Archives. Morieux spent months decoding(解码) the letters, and published his findings Monday in the French history journal Annales.
In one letter, Marguerite Lemoyne, a 61-year-old mother, scolds her son Nicolas Quesnel for not writing:"On the first day of the year... you have written to your fiancée... I think more about you than you about me...In any case I wish you a happy new year filled with blessings of the Lord. I think I am for the tomb, I have been ill for three weeks. Give my compliments to Varin, it is only his wife who gives me your news."
"The son who's at sea is only writing to his fiance, and the mother gets really annoyed about that," Morieux said. The letters also demonstrate the difficulty of long-distance communication in the 1750s. Many of the senders, like Lemoyne, were likely illiterate and dictated their messages to a copyist. Moreover, sending a letter to a ship constantly on the move during wartime was difficult and unreliable, and families often sent multiple copies of letters to different ports.
In an effort to maximize the chances of successfully communicating with a loved one, each letter had multiple messages crammed onto the paper, often from different families and addressed to multiple crewmates. To Morieux, the letters show how communities stay resilient(有韧性的) in times of crisis.
(1)、What can we learn about the love letters ?A、They were written by miserable French sailors. B、They documented the impact of war on families. C、They were researched many times in 1758. D、They were nicely preserved in Britain's National Archives.(2)、What can we know about Lemoyne in the fourth paragraph ?A、She had no knowledge of her son's situation. B、She had a terrible relationship with her daughter-in-law. C、She deeply loved and missed her son. D、She was seriously ill and bought a tomb.(3)、What does the underlined word "illiterate" mean in paragraph 5 ?A、Passionate. B、Frustrated. C、Individual. D、Uncultured.(4)、Why did people send letters to several crewmates ?A、To accurately convey more information. B、To establish good relationships with other crewmates. C、To make sure gain connection with loved ones. D、To handle community crisis in a timely manner. -

People who have trouble walking or moving around often have a hard time enjoying the beach. But hundreds of beaches in Greece now offer a new way for people in wheelchairs to get into the water by themselves. It's called Seatrac.
Seatrac is basically a chair on a moving ramp (坡道) that can carry a disabled person into the sea. It is operated by remote (远程的) control. Once in the sea, the person can either remain in the chair, enjoying the water, or go for a swim. When the person is ready to get out of the water, the Seatrac system brings the chair back to the top the ramp.
Seatrac was invented and developed in Greece. When one of the inventors, Ignatios Fotiou, was talking with a friend who used a wheelchair, the friend said he enjoyed the sea, but didn't like having to be carried into the ocean. Mr Fotiou realized there must be a way to make it easier for wheelchair users to get into the water. Mr Fotiou worked with his partner and a professor at a Greek university to design the system. Finnally, they formed a company called TOBEA to build and sell the systems.
The company worked hard to make the system simple enough to be put in place and easy to run. A wooden walkway allows wheerchair users to reach the Seatrac. The system uses solar (太阳能的) power. It doesn't require outside power, and can continue to run even if the electricity goes out. The Seatrac system can easily be packed up and stored when the swimming season ends.
The Seatrac system is being used at over 220 beaches in Greece, Cypris, Italy, and Latvia. TOBEA hopes to offer Seatrac in other countries. TOBEA has created a website showing where beaches with these special services can be found. The Greek govenment hopes that Seatrac will help attract more tourists to the country.
(1)、What is Seatrac able to do?A、Watch out of the disabled in the sea. B、Choose the suitable beach for the disabled. C、Help the disabled get in and out of the sea safely. Boredom has, surprisingly, become quite interesting to academics lately. In early May, London's Boring Conference celebrated seven years of delighting in dullness. At this event, people flocked to talks about weather traffic jams, and vending-machine sounds, among other sleep-inducing topics.
What, exactly, is everyone studying? One widely accepted psychological definition of boredom is "the unpleasant experience of wanting, but being unable, to engage in satisfying activities." But how can you measure a person's boredom level and compare it with someone else's?
In 1986, psychologists introduced the Boredom Proneness Scale, designed to measure an individual's overall tendency to feel bored. By contrast, the Multidimensional State Boredom scale, developed in 2008, measures a person's feelings of boredom in a given situation.
Boredom has been linked to behavior issues including inattentive driving mindless snacking excessive drinking, and addictive gambling. In fact, many of us would choose pain over boredom.
One team of psychologists discovered that two-thirds of men and a quarter of women would rather have electric shocks than sit alone with their thought for 15 minutes. Researching this phenomenon, another team asked volunteers to watch boring, sad, or neutral films, during which they could have electric shocks. The bored volunteers shocked themselves more and harder than the sad or neutral one did.
But boredom isn't all bad. By encouraging self-reflection and daydreaming, it can encourage activity. An early study gave participants abundant time to complete problem-solving and word-association exercises. Once all the obvious answers were exhausted, participants gave more and more inventive answers to fight boredom. A British study took these findings one step further, asking subjects to complete a creative challenge (coming up with a list of alternative uses for a household item). One group of subjects did a boring activity first, while the others went straight to the creative task. Those whose boredom pumps had been prepared were more productive.
In our always-connected world, boredom may be a hard-to-define state, but it is a fertile one. Watch paint dry or water boil, or at least put away your smartphone for a while, and you might unlock your next big idea.

C、When they are engaged in some routines. D、When they don't enjoy what they are studying.(2)、What does the author say boredom can lead to?A、Great determination. B、Mental health. C、Huge pain. D、Harmful conduct.(3)、What is the findings of one team of psychologists in their experiment?A、Volunteers prefer watching a boring movie to sitting alone deliberating. B、Many volunteers are unable to resist boredom longer than fifteen minutes. C、Male volunteers are more immune to the effects of boredom than females. D、Mary volunteers choose to hurt themselves rather than endure boredom.(4)、What does the author suggest one do when faced with a challenging problem?A、Unlock one's smartphone. B、Stop worrying and think big. C、Spare some time to be bored. D、Look around oneself for inspiration -

Egyptian tour guide says BRI makes his life splendid
(文章来源:Global Times)
On the center of page 18 of the People's Daily newspaper issued on Dec. 25, 2023, there is a photo in which an Egyptian tour guide is passionately explaining something to Chinese tourists. This tour guide is Abbas El-Said. It is the second time for him to be reported by People's Daily, and the first time came 11 years ago when a journalist from People's Daily, captured a moment of Abbas, who was 28 and served as an assistant to the director of the China Cultural Center in Cairo, telling stories about the 12 Chinese zodiac animals to local students at the Center. This photo appeared on page 19 of the June 8, 2012 edition of People's Daily.
"I always have the photo of this precious report in my phone, and I often show it to my friends, colleagues, family, and Chinese tourists. It is my great honor and pride that my photo appeared on People's Daily, China's largest newspaper!" Speaking of the 2012 interview by People's Daily, Abbas was still excited. Though Abbas had no elders in his family well versed in Chinese culture, he still developed a keen interest in China from a young age - a children's book about the East sparked his longing for China. After entering elementary school, his curiosity in and fascination with China further deepened as he learned the stories of the ancient Silk Road, the faraway and beautiful country of ancient China, and the wisdom-filled Confucius and Confucianism. Later, Abbas was admitted to the Chinese language department of Ain Shams University. In order to excel in Chinese, he practiced thinking in Chinese, and his progress was indeed remarkable.
The Egyptian man said that he had three dreams of his life - learning Chinese, being a tour guide, and serving as an envoy of cultural exchange between Egypt and China. And he has always been progressing steadily on this path he has planned. In 2006, Abbas completed his studies at the age of 22 and went on to further his education at Sinai College of Tourism. After graduating in 2009, he officially became a professional Chinese-language tour guide. As a matter of fact, Abbas started receiving Chinese tourists as a sophomore. "By working as a tour guide, I was able to earn an income while practicing my Chinese. Most importantly, being a tour guide allowed me to make friends with more and more Chinese people," he noted. It was also during this year that Abbas started attending various activities at the China Cultural Center in Cairo. "The China Cultural Center is like a window that opens up to Chinese culture, allowing a ray of sunshine to shine into my heart."
In 2010, Abbas became an assistant to the director of the Chinese Cultural Center in Cairo and served for a period of three years. "This job gave me the opportunity to share my love for Chinese culture with more people. Through organizing lectures, exhibitions, and events like the Chinese New Year temple fair, more and more Egyptians started to embrace Chinese culture and became fond of it. Being able to contribute to the bridge of friendship between Egypt and China made me feel incredibly happy," Abbas told People's Daily.
Recently, Abbas has been studying a Chinese word "lianjie" (链接)," which means connectivity. "As ancient civilizations, Egypt and China had friendly exchanges over 2,000 years ago, which marked 'lianjie' in history. The China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) is 'lianjie' in contemporary times that revitalizes the ancient Silk Road," Abbas explained. He said China actively cooperates with countries around the world for mutual benefit and win-win outcomes, and he believes that in today's turbulent international environment, people will better understand the value and significance of the BRI.
Currently, "lianjie" is more reflected in the synergy between the BRI and Egypt's Vision 2030. "The BRI is helping me fulfill my dreams and also benefiting my country. China has helped us build the Central Business District in our new administrative capital, where the Iconic Tower is known as the 'tallest building in Africa,' which makes us very proud," Abbas noted. He also took the 10th of Ramadan Light Rail Transit program as an example, saying the program, as the first electrified railway in Egypt, adopts Chinese technologies and equipment. "Many Egyptians, including myself, are personally experiencing the tangible benefits and conveniences brought about by the BRI," he said. Abbas said his life would not be the same if he had not studied Chinese or if the BRI had not come to Egypt. "My life is splendid because of the BRI," Abbas noted.
Currently, Abbas is preparing to establish a company that promotes Chinese culture and fosters cultural and economic exchanges between China and Egypt. "I am willing to do my part to strengthen the connection between Egypt and China, bring the two countries closer and build closer ties between the two peoples!" As tourism exchanges between Egypt and China continue to flourish, Abbas has become increasingly busy. Since the beginning of this year, he has been receiving an average of two to three Chinese tour groups every month, with each group staying in Egypt for a minimum of one week and a maximum of 20 days. His busy schedule reflects the accelerated development of bilateral relations between China and Egypt, and highlights the successful implementation of the BRI in Egypt.
In today's Egypt, the pragmatic cooperation between China and Egypt has brought about plenty of employment opportunities, leading to a high demand for Chinese-speaking talents. Learning Chinese has become a popular trend there. In September 2022, a pilot project for Chinese language education in Egyptian secondary schools was launched, marking the inclusion of Chinese language into Egypt's national education system. The growing enthusiasm for the Chinese language and Chinese culture in Egypt demonstrates that the mutual understanding between China and Egypt is built on mutual learning between the two civilizations, and the strongest potential of China-Egypt cooperation lies in people-to-people bond.

Kevin was a member of a well-known family—well respected and industrious. However, a crisis left their family penniless.
Kevin decided to leave home city and make a living by himself because his family was too poor. Before leaving, he told his father, "I want to learn the circus (马戏) performance."
His father was confused and wondered why he had such a strange idea.
What his father didn't know was that Kevin loved the circus since childhood. Every time there was news of a circus performance, he hurried home on his bicycle. He ran through the front door. "Mum, Dad," he shouted. "The circus has come to town."
He was very excited when his father took him and his sister to the circus the next day. At the circus, the audience always burst out laughing when the clowns (小丑) appeared. The attraction of the circus was endless.
He clearly remembered once they went and sat down, a lady in a shiny costume walked a tightrope. When a boy of Kevin's age rode a unicycle (独轮脚踏车), he asked for a volunteer. Kevin raised his hand and he was picked. The boy taught Kevin to ride a unicycle. The audience clapped. He had a great time at the circus!
His father was unhappy with his answer, "What? No, you can't do that. A circus is the place for clowns. Our family will be ashamed of you."
But Kevin insisted. "Our family is so poor now. Which is more important to you, dignity or food? I will give you some money every month from the circus. It probably will be a huge fortune." His father was very stubborn (固执的). "If you go there, somebody will know about it very soon and I'll be very embarrassed, and it must be really tough to be skilled at performing such tricks."
However, Kevin still left home and found a circus to stay regardless. He worked very hard studying magic and lived with animals. Every month, his parents would get a check from him.
