When young, my parents took me to a zoo. I remember looking in admiration at two bears in a cage. Things have changed. My kids would be afraid to see animals in cages. Today, we expect animals to be held in more natural environment, and for zoos to do more to make the world a better place.

Zoos can host great conservation(保护) work. Sometimes they hold and protect endangered animals. About 40 seriously endangered animal species exist mainly in zoos. They are us for study, reproducing(繁殖) programs and even to reintroduce the animals to the wild. But not many zoos do enough of this. I support the recommendation of some researchers that zoos should spend at least 10%of their money on biodiversity(生物多样性) conservation. Sadly, a 1999 study showed an average spending of only 0.1%.

If zoos totally concentrate on protection, we might expect them to mostly house threatened species. But many zoos focus on the big animals that draw audiences to make money. I say that's inappropriate(不合适的). I don't mean zoos shouldn't be a business. Since care of animals can be extremely expensive, it's reasonable for zoos to open their doors to earn some money, as long as animals are kept in acceptable conditions.

Visiting animals in real life helps develop an appreciation for the natural world. Virtual-reality (VR) glasses and movies about wildlife are worthwhile, but not the same. A friend of mine who works in the Amazon puts it this way: "To love the forest, you need to smell the forest."

Conservation should come first for all zoos, together with education and research. Without that, a zoo becomes just a business: one that the world would be better off without.

Blood maybe thicker than water when it comes to human relationships and it seems that the same is true of jackdaws(寒鸦) after scientists found they readily change friends to gain food but stick with family even at the risk of going hungry.

Alex Thornton, a professor of leaning ability development, said, "We kept track of hundreds of wild jackdaws, each of which was equipped with a small chip. In this experiment we divided jackdaws into two groups—A or B—and programmed a pair of computer-controlled devices(装置) to provide worms. Only if individuals from the same group (AA or BB) visited together, will they get the worms." If birds from different groups arrived together—A with B―the feeders would remain closed. Single birds would I get seeds(种子), but not the worms that they preferred.

Thornton said, "We wanted to find out if jackdaws could build new relations with new partners. They might have friends in the wrong group. Do jackdaws leave them and start to hang out with individuals who are in the right group? The jackdaws turned out to be very smart quickly learning to give up friends from the wrong group to get the best food. However, they acted differently when it came to their close relations even if they got nothing.

Thormton said jackdaws were an excellent subject matter as they were clever and had energetic social networks. "You've got individuals coming and going far beyond their strong relationships, and they have lots of other company. They are similar to human society." Michael Kings, of the University of Exeter, said, "These results help our understanding of the development of intelligence as they show that being able to track and remember information about social partners can bring them good."

One morning, Charlie Latuske woke up feverish in his home in Surrey in the UK, leaving him unable to function. He'd had a sore throat for a few days, believing it would get better, but that morning, he knew that he was in need of a doctor.

Within the hour, he was at his nearest drug store, collecting medicines. And three days later, he was on vacation, as planned.

"I was impressed by the efficiency of the whole thing," he said.

During the early morning journey from the suburbs(郊区), we sat sleepily, with collars standing firm below our ears. Although the group of people are in the same bus every day, we never 1 or talk. Everyone's face shows the tiredness of waking up early and working.

To adapt to climate change, some flowers are darkening their color to protect themselves from the suns radiation, new research shows.

The study suggests that over the past 75 years, the ultraviolet (UV) pigments (紫外线色素) in flowers have increased in response to rising temperatures and the thinning ozone layer (臭氧层). The flowers won't look any different to humans, but insects consider the higher levels of UV pigments as a darker color, which could be confusing when they try to find out colorful flowers to land on.

The UV-absorbing pigments in flowers work like sunscreen and protect sensitive cells from harmful radiation, Matthew Koski, a plant ecologist at Clemson University, says. He and his team hoped to determine if changes in pigments were a result of environmental change-and if so, what are the plants responding to? The team collected dried, pressed plants across North America, Australia and Europe. In total, they studied 1, 238 samples from 42 different species dating back to 1941. Then, using a UV-sensitive camera, they photographed flower petals from each species. Next, they paired the photographs with the historic local temperature and ozone level data from the time the plant was picked to see how the pigment level changed over time.

The researchers found that the changes in pigments differ between species, a result of the flowers structure. Flowers with open, exposed pollen had more UV-absorbing pigments when ozone levels were low and radiation was high. But flowers with pollen surrounded by the petal responded to temperatures, not ozone levels.

As climate change continues to intensify, these changes in flowers color can affect plant-insect interactions. When the whole flowers get darker, insects might miss the flowers entirely. "This has a negative influence on plant reproduction," Koski says.
