During the pandemic, Tokyo's lively Mejji University campus stood still. My students were restricted to their homes, appearing only as small figures on my screen during Zoom lectures on human-computer interaction. I spent the days in my lab, looking for ways to pass the time.
On a particularly bland day in 2020, I was recalling about how, before the pandemic, Tokyo used to be packed with people who had flown across the world to enjoy the exciting food scene. But now restaurants were empty and people longed for foods they once relished. I missed drinking wine in a bar, watching others enjoying their evenings. I wondered how I could contribute during these trying times. That's when an idea struck: why not create a device to bring the flavor of the world into people's homes?
In Japan, companies use taste sensors to monitor the quality of products. These devices measure the strength of the five basic tastes — salty, sweet, sour, bitter, umami — and assign each a value. It dawned on me that if taste could be quantified, perhaps it could also be recreated. I dissolved foods such as pizza and fries, measured how they rated, then made 10 liquid samples that each represented a taste. When copying the taste of food, it's like following a recipe; I combined the 10 liquid samples to reflect the taste sensor's measurements of the dissolved dish.
Taste the TV (TTTV), released in 2021, looks like a television screen — but you can lick it. Once the viewer selects a dish from the screen menu, an image of the food will appear, and above the screen a device containing my liquid flavor samples will spray in a combination that creates the taste of the chosen food. The spray then rolls films over the screen, and they can enjoy the taste of pizza without even biting into a slice.
My invention was received pretty well worldwide. My students and I would be interested in finding how else to challenge traditional ways of enjoying media, and we knew we wanted to expand on TTTV.

Leather-making in Florence dates back hundreds of years to the 13th century. A look at leather craftsmen in Florence will help you know more about Italian leather.
The leather factory-PIEROTUCCI
Join a free tour of the factory and you'll get a deep dive into the process of making a handbag. After seeing what it takes to make a bag by hand, you'll no longer wonder why PIEROTUCCI prices come with two zeros at the end. And you'll know that if you do spend the money, the bag will last forever
The leather shoe store—STEFANO BEMER
STEFANO BEMER was famous for its hand-tailored shoes. The elegant store that sells shoes that cost hundreds, and in some cases thousands,of dollars is also where apprentices (学徒) learn their skills: visible in the front section of the store.
The leather school—Scuola del Cuoio
Walking into the courtyard of the Scuola del Cuoio feels a little like walking onto a mini college campus. You leave the busy street as you enter the historic building. The school specializes in making one-of-a-kind bags and in teaching paying students the secrets of high-quality leather working.
The bookbinding (书籍装订) store——Il Torchio
Il Torchio is a beautiful bookbinding store run by Erin Ciulla. If you ask Ciulla, she might take you to see the "guillotine", which is actually a very large, antique-looking machine that's used to cut large amounts of paper. Beyond binding with leather covers, Ciulla also covers books, journals, and photo albums in hand-made papers.

I was never a fast runner and thus I always didn't like running. Throughout my childhood, whenever we competed in the 50-meter run, the 400-meter, or any other type of race, I would finish in the bottom half. In my late teens, as a member of a baseball team, I was the slowest runner on the team. In the preseason training, I was always the one running by myself at the end.
Therefore, twenty years later, when I entered my first official running race — a 3,000-meter challenge in my city — at age 38, I certainly didn't expect to win or come close to winning.
I was there because my college friend Jim Hosek was the director of the race, and he asked me to run. The race was aimed at raising money for the unfortunate patients in a hospital and encouraging the patients and their families to be brave, determined, and confident with sportsmanship.
It was a heartwarming program. I wanted to support it, so I showed up, paid the entrance fee, had a number pinned (把……别住) on my back, and moved over to the starting line. There, I waited with about 300 other runners for the race to begin. I was nervous. Would I be the last one to finish a race again? Could I even finish the race? I wondered.
Before long, someone spoke into a microphone, "Anyone weighing over 200 pounds comes down to the scale (秤), please." Knowing I was over 200 pounds, I walked down to the scale. A man told me to stand on it. "Two hundred and three pounds," he said. Then he wrote down the race number that was on my back. Out of curiosity, I asked him why he did so, and then I was told there would be an award ceremony (仪式) after the race. One award was for the first finisher in the over 200-pound group, and this special award would be announced at the end of the ceremony.
Not expecting the award, I ran towards the starting line, never realizing there were only two runners weighing over 200 pounds.
Paragraph 1:
Soon after, the race started.
Paragraph 2:
Then came the last award, and to my surprise, my name was announced.

Have you ever imagined an insect-inspired robot, which weighs less than a gram, could one day help out in surgery (外科手术)?
Scientists have designed this small, "insect-bot" called mCLARI that can control and even change its body shape as it travels in different environments to fit through gaps. It's 2 centimeters long, weighs less than 0.97 grams and can travel at a speed of 6 centimeters per second. It's the smaller, faster replacement to CLARI, which was designed by the same team.
"Because of the robot's small size and ability to change shape, we expect usage of this technology in four important areas," the lead author Kaushik Jayaram said. These include disaster (灾害) response, check on high-value objects, environmental monitoring and medical treatment.
"In the long term, we hope such robots will be used more widely in moving through human bodies and performing surgeries that can't be easily done at present," Jayaram said. With mCLARI, Jayaram's team is moving closer to creating robots that can fit in different environments—just like the insects they're inspired by.
The mCLARI robot has four legs and can move in narrow spaces by changing between running forward and side-to-side and can use different speeds in human bodies. Its legs are joined to its body through joints (关节), which enables mCLARI to change its body shape based on the environment it is in. For example, its legs can be lengthened up to 50% in certain spaces.
As follow-up work, the scientists want to give mCLARI more power and sensing ability while helping the surgeries. "We are also excited about understanding the effect of shape change on improving functions of robots," Jayaram said. "And this is sure a great one-step forward of the technology. The robot will have entered the market by 2025 and will bring greater benefits to mankind, especially in medical treatment."
(1)、Which of the following can best describe mCLARI?A、Valuable but uncontrollable. B、Modern but high-cost. C、Heavy and time-consuming. D、Advanced and effective.(2)、What is paragraph 3 mainly about?A、Possible application fields of the robot. B、Different types of the robot. C、Several important features of the robot. D、Working process of the robot.(3)、What is Jayaram's attitude towards the robot?A、Worried. B、Positive. C、Doubtful. D、Uninterested.(4)、Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?A、Jayaram: A Scientist Studying Robot Intelligence B、mCLARI Is Already Widely Available in the Market C、CLARI: A Robot Invented by Inspiration from the Insects D、A Tiny Shape-changing Robot Will Help Perform Surgeries -

A perfect performance of Chinese Shaolin Kung Fu amazed hundreds of audiences in Bowers Museum in US Southern California on Sunday.
This Kung Fu demonstration by Shaolin monks (僧人) was a highlight of the 2023 Shaolin Cultural Day, a rare cultural event for the Orange County community in Southern California.
"The event offers a unique opportunity for the Orange County community to actively engage with Shaolin culture and gain firsthand experience in various Shaolin activities," said Anne Shih, chairwoman of the Board of Governors of Bowers Museum. "Whether it's learning from Kung Fu masters or enjoying interactive Shaolin activities, these experiences will help audiences to experience the Chinese culture and better understand Chinese traditions," Shih said.

With a pair of glasses and mild manner, Siew Te Wong could be described as a Malaysian Clark Kent (a fictional character in Superman). This wildlife biologist is a Superman of sorts — a tireless defender of the world's smallest bear species: the sun bear.
"I often call the sun bear a forgotten species," Wong said. "When I first started, 20 years ago, no one had ever studied sun bears. Most people did not know that they even existed," As he studied the animal and realized the threats it faced from deforestation and illegal hunting, he knew the bears were in serious trouble. "The more I learn about them, the more I care. The more I care, the more I worry," he said. "I have to help them." Today, Wong's nonprofit, the Bornean Sun Bear Conservation Center, is the only sun bear sanctuary (保护区) in the world.
Sun bears are found in the rainforests of South Asia, and the small bears play a big role in keeping these woodlands healthy. Many plants and animals depend on them to spread seeds, create nesting sites and control the termite (白蚁) population. Healthy rainforests provide clean air and water to the entire world.
But the sun bear population has decreased by 30% during the last three decades. In 2007, the bear was officially classified as vulnerable (易危的) to extinction by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature.
Currently, 44 sun bears live at Wong's center. All of them were orphaned by illegal hunting or rescued from captivity (囚禁). The center has also become one of the leading tourist destinations in the area. "They can see how special the sun bear is and learn about how their survival is important to ours," Wong said, "so they can take some action when they go back home."
For Wong, this work is simply his responsibility. "Sun bears have become part of my family. When they're endangered, I care for them. When they are in trouble, I speak for them," he said. "I want to be the voice for the sun bear, to fight for the sun bear, to ensure the survival of the sun bear. But my goal is to save the entire forest ecosystem and that is so important to the survival of mankind. I want bears to live in the forest and not in captivity."
(1)、When Wong first started to study sun bears, ____.A、they were paid little attention B、they were a great threat to mankind C、they were well protected by the local people D、they were officially classified as rare animals(2)、What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?A、The importance of healthy rainforests. B、An introduction to the rainforests of South Asia. C、A dependent living situation of all species in rainforests. D、The role sun bears play in keeping a balanced ecosystem.(3)、Why does Wong make his sun bear center a tourist destination?A、To finance this center. B、To protect species diversity. C、To recognize the value of the center. D、To raise awareness about sun bears' situation.(4)、What is the text mainly about?A、How to turn a sun bear center into a tourist destination. B、An introduction to a great defender of the sun bear. C、A call for stopping the sun bear hunt. D、What we can do to save the sun bear. -
