My name is Jake Reynolds. That year, I was a junior at a high school. I was known for my good grades and honesty, but I encountered a situation that would test my integrity in ways I hadn't imagined.

It all started with Mr. Lawson's history class. We had been assigned a major essay on the impacts of World War II, which would account for a significant part of our final grade. The essay was due in two weeks, and I had been tirelessly working on it, staying up late to ensure my research was thorough and my arguments were well organized.

The day before the essay was due, my computer crashed. I panicked as I realized I had lost almost all of my work. I had saved some drafts on a cloud service, but they were outdated and incomplete. It seemed impossible to start over. At that moment, desperation clouded my judgment.

As I sat at my desk, trying to figure out what I could do, my friend Daniel knocked on my door. He was also struggling with his essay and knew I had been working hard on mine. Noticing my worry, he asked if I needed help. I hesitated, but ultimately admitted what had happened.

Daniel looked thoughtful, "You know, I heard about a website that offers ready-made essays. It could be a good idea to try it if you really need to."

The idea seemed like a lifeline. I knew it was wrong, but the pressure was mounting, and I felt cornered. After a moment's hesitation, I decided to use the website. I quickly purchased an essay, changed it slightly to make it fit the assignment, and submitted it. I felt a sense of relief, but it was short-lived.

The next morning, Mr. Lawson announced that the essays would be graded using plagiarism (剽窃) detection software. My heart sank, and I knew it wouldn't take long for the software to catch it.

  • 9、How To Be a Bolder, More Confident Person

Want to boost your self-confidence, feel more empowered, and take charge of your life? By embracing a bold mindset, you will unlock greater confidence, resilience, and control over your life. Here are some valuable tips to help you discover your passions and strengths, while overcoming your fears.

Stop hesitating and take action to build your self-confidence.

Is there something you've been wanting or trying to do, but can't seem to get the courage up?. Taking the first small step towards trying something new can give you the energy to keep going. Whenever you' re feeling unsure in interactions with others, swallow your pride and make the first move!

Do the unexpected and get out of your comfort zone.

Doing something new and unexpected might make you feel uneasy or afraid.. Instead, embrace the newness of a skill, trust your ability to adapt and don't be afraid to be yourself. Remember, taking a risk like learning a new skill isn't the same as making impulsive (冲动的) decisions. To avoid regrets, make choices and take actions reflecting your values.

    Pretend you' re already bold.

Your bold inspiration doesn't have to be real. You could even think of a character from a movie or book who's daring and brave. Then, imagine their boldness in your life. If you already know someone bold, imagine how they'd act. Studies show your mood can be affected by your behavior.

While there's power in taking on something new or trying to get what you want, there's also the chance you may fail. Embrace the failure. It's not the opposite of success, it's a necessary component. Without the risk of failure, you don't have the opportunity for success.

Being bold lets you oxford, embrace, and take charge of your life.

  • 10、Today's globalization discontent begins with Henry Bessemer, whose invention in 1858 greatly improved the quality of steel and sharply reduced its price. Prior to Bessemer, the cost of overland transport was prohibitive, because the steam engines of the early 19th century were so weak that they occasionally needed a push start, and railways supported relatively little weight and wore out quickly. Until the late 19th century, wheat or cattle farms more than 30 miles from seaports could sell their produce only locally. Within decades of Bessemer's invention, cheap grain from the US and affordable meat from Argentina flooded European markets.

Well into the 20th century, most Europeans worked on farms and they mistakenly blamed foreign competition for their suffering. Their protests eventually led to the Smoot-Hawley Tariff (关税) Act (SHTA) that started a global trade war that lasted for decades.

At that time, the economic damage from SHTA turned out to be relatively small. For example, at that time, international trade accounted for only 9 percent of America's GDP.

However, the law proved very harmful in the long term, by damaging the political and moral foundations of international trade that John Stuart Mill had described more than a century earlier: "International trade first taught nations to see with goodwill the wealth and progress of one another. Before that, citizens and political leaders usually wished all countries weak, poor, and ill-governed but their own. After that, they learned to see in other countries' wealth and progress a direct source of wealth and progress to their own country."

After the Second World War, political leaders finally understood the importance of dismantling (拆除) the previous decades' tariff walls and succeeded in establishing today's global order that drove the worldwide tariff average of nearly 30 percent in 1945 down to about 5 percent today.

Economic historians have long known that free international trade does not lift all boats. Its benefits may not be equally enjoyed by all, but its costs, as experienced by European farmers in the 19th century and by American factory workers today, are concentrated and severe. Even so, the broad benefits of free trade far outweigh the concentrated harms.

    (1)、What is Henry Bessemer's contribution?
A、He has built a better railway network B、He has invented a more powerful steam engine. C、He has discovered a method to cut transport costs. D、He has found a way to produce cheaper but better steel.
(2)、What can be learned about SHTA?
A、It helped the Europeans a lot in the long run B、It made people around the world more selfish. C、It improved American farmers' competitiveness. D、It brought immediate and huge losses to the US.
(3)、What is the author's attitude to lowered tariffs?
    A、Disapproving. B、Tolerant. C、Favorable. D、Ambiguous.
(4)、What is a problem of free international trade?
A、Certain areas or industries might be seriously hit. B、Its benefits are usually enjoyed by factory workers. C、Its costs cannot be shifted to the developing countries. D、The concentrated harms may outweigh its broad benefits.
  • 11、Educational optimists predict that AI will soon provide amazing efficiencies and progress in teaching and learning. But are efficiency and machine logic what our students need most?

It's certainly true that AI is a wonderful new tool dramatically transforming human life. AI is getting faster and better at spotting patterns in complicated information. This helps it guess what might happen next-like predicting what a customer will buy, the next word in a sentence, a sound in spoken language, or many other tasks. AI can answer specific complex questions or perform complex calculations at a rate impossible for the human mind to comprehend, let alone compete with. It can also create images and speeches which not only imitate reality but surpass it to meet programmed standards of excellence.

However, although these may be helpful to adults seeking to improve productivity, it is necessary to follow G. K. Chesterton's advice that children should not be controlled by educational projects and ideas without scientific proof. Allowing students to avoid traditional learning methods with AI will have uncertain and potentially harmful results. The same could be true of educators' dependence on AI for student assessment and lesson planning. In education at least, it is quite possible that AI will work against natural human development and provide not a short cut to human formation but a short circuit.

Despite AI's influence, traditional learning and writing assignments are crucial for promoting learning and cognitive development. Homework, similar to music practice, teaches discipline and skills essential for personal growth and future success. Deceptive (欺骗性的) practices harm genuine learning, spoiling students' competitiveness in an AI-dominated job market. Reliance on AI-generated content weakens critical thinking and creativity, damaging students' intellectual growth. Moreover, it devalues the role of teachers in guiding students' development. In contrast, real engagement with homework cultivates invaluable human qualities essential in an AI-driven world, ensuring students' competitive advantage and overall development.

(1)、Which advantage of AI is NOT mentioned in paragraph 2?
A、Creating speeches that surpass reality. B、Solving logic problems faster than humans C、Predicting customers' potential purchases D、Recognizing patterns in complicated data.
    (2)、Why does the author quote G. K. Chesterton's advice?
A、To prove that traditional learning methods are outdated. B、To show that AI is not that advanced for modem education. C、To emphasize that children need strict discipline in learning. D、To argue against exposing children to immature educational ideas.
(3)、What is the advantage of traditional learning and writing assignments according to the text?
A、They can be used to assess students' success. B、They promote students' music competitiveness. C、They can help students avoid deceptive practice. D、They are crucial for students' overall development.
(4)、Where is the passage most likely taken from?
A、A business report. B、A science fiction novel. C、An educational journal. D、A technology magazine.
  • 12、"What have I gotten myself into?" I wondered as I sat through a research meeting conducted entirely in Polish, unable to even read the title on the screen. Having only basic Polish language skills, I found my experiment in cross-cultural cooperation more challenging than I had expected.

The idea of spending time abroad hadn't occurred to me until my advisor suggested it during my first year. With his support, I enjoyed a remarkable summer in a laboratory in Japan, which left me wanting more. So, I applied for a Fulbright fellowship in Poland. To receive the fellowship, I first had to find a lab to host me, and neither I nor my advisor had any connections to Poland.

Relying on Google to translate lab websites, I began to send cold emails. When my eventual host responded, eager to collaborate, I was thrilled. I suddenly felt the possibilities for my research career were endless and global.

I was the first visiting scholar my research group had hosted from the United States, and my Polish colleagues were curious about what brought me to their country. This led to many fruitful discussions about the similarities and differences in how science is conducted across cultures. For example, much of the funding in Poland is awarded to teams rather than individuals. The system promotes cross-disciplinary (跨学科的) cooperations across the country, which in turn shapes how scientists design and carry out studies.

I learned as much about the history and culture in Central and Eastern Europe as I did scientifically. Colleagues related firsthand accounts about challenges the region faced during the Cold War. Many laboratories had limited resources, and they rarely published their research in English. Those conditions helped shape research on antimicrobial treatment into bacteriophage and antibiotics, and Poland remain leaders in the former to this day.

My cultural immersion made me a better researcher. I now see cross-cultural cooperations as a way to overcome communication barriers that can block progress in science. By stepping outside my comfort zone, I gained the confidence to navigate my research in new directions that I might have otherwise boxed myself out of.

(1)、Why did the author apply for fellowship in Poland?
A、To practice Polish and learn its culture. B、To have another rewarding experience. C、To follow the advisor's suggestion. D、To continue the research started in Japan.
(2)、How did the author benefit from the experience in Polland?
A、He became an expert in Cold War history. B、He had access to cross-disciplinary cooperations. C、He secured abundant funding for future research projects. D、He obtained scientific knowledge and a global perspective.
(3)、Which words best describe the author?
A、Helpful and determined. B、Cautious and innovative. C、Adventurous and inquisitive. D、Curious and competitive.
(4)、What does the author imply about cross-cultural cooperations?
A、They are essential for the advancement of science. B、They might box researchers out of a certain direction. C、They should prioritize language training over research. D、They are valueless for creative minds in scientific field.

My twins, Allison and Blake, were always disappointed with their birthday presents. They'd complain (抱怨) loudly if they didn't get what was on their wish lists. Their self-centeredness and lack of gratitude shocked me, making me realize I'd spoiled (宠坏) them more than I thought.

I was determined to do something.

I found a family living on a farm that needed help badly. There were four children in the family aged from three to eight. I began to visit them every two months.

As Allison and Blake's birthday neared, I took them to the farm. When we arrived, I told my children to take two bags off the car: one with food, the other with presents they'd once disliked.

We were welcomed inside with smiles and appreciation. Obviously, Alison and Blake were shocked by what they saw. I could guess they had never expected people would live such a difficult life.

"Look! Presents for you. " Allison was trying to make the kids happier.

With their parents' permission (允许), the kids began to pick the boxes up, shake them, and guess what was inside. They were so excited. Allison and Blake encouraged the kids to open the boxes. They did. And there were shouts of surprise and joy. Then grateful hugs and sincere "thank-you".

At first Alison and Blake looked confused but soon joined the children and felt proud that they brought happiness there.

On the way home, Alison and Blake were a little quiet. When it was time to go to bed that day, my kids hugged me and said, "Thank you, Mum."

Animals may have a great deal of stress. Dogs and cats may be stressed when around men because they were badly treated by a man, and they may never forget that. A dog who was attacked by another dog while on a walk may be always afraid to go on walks, or even be afraid to leave the house.

Cats, dogs and horses will not all have the exact same stressors (压力源), so you just have to pay close attention to your animal and what makes them unique, such as changes in eating habits, too much sleep and too little sleep, just to name a few.

Music can be extremely beneficial for animals in high stress situations. In the atmosphere, they feel calm, safe and well protected. Music can be specifically helpful when played at veterinary (兽医的) clinics for animals who are afraid of the vet. This helps calm the owners of the animals and the staff at the office besides the animals. That's why it is being taken up at a variety of veterinary clinics around the world.

  • 19、The way you learn most effectively will impact many different aspects of your life. Visual (视觉的) learners process information best when it's presented with images drawn on a whiteboard, charts or graphs. Visual learners usually process pictures before they read printed text and are also able to visualize concepts quickly. People who are visual learners would prefer it if instruction is printed rather than given verbally (口头地), and may often write or draw when attempting to make sense of a new topic. Many visual learners remember something better once they've written it down or drawn it out.

Auditory (听觉的) learners process information best when it's said out loud, such as in a lecture setting or spoken presentation. This type of learners can easily recall what others say and prefer to talk through topics they find complex or difficult to understand. People who are auditory learners prefer verbal directions and may use repetition or repeat things aloud to memorize things. They may ask questions to understand the subject matter better and may need to hear something repeated more than once before they fully comprehend. Auditory learners also often benefit from listening to recordings as a method of absorbing new concepts.

Kinesthetic (动觉的) learners process information through experience rather than by being shown or told. This type of learners prefer to do things that are more "hands-on". They prefer to touch and feel items and can easily recall things they've done. People who are kinesthetic learners like to make and create things using their hands, and remember information best when they are physically involved. Kinesthetic learners like to take part in the process by shadowing others, and prefer to practice concepts as a way to absorb new information.

Take time to consider how you prefer to take in new information. Think about the last time how you worked to ensure you retained the information. The answers to these questions will help you discover which learning style works best for you.

(1)、What do visual learners do to form an idea in mind?
A、Visualize or read something. B、Process or present something. C、Recall or speak. D、Write or draw.
(2)、Who can understand something repeated better?
    A、Visual learners. B、Auditory learners. C、Kinesthetic learners. D、Lifelong learners.
(3)、What does the underlined word "shadowing" in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
    A、Listening carefully. B、Memorizing perfectly. C、Following closely. D、Asking repeatedly.
(4)、What is author's purpose of writing this passage?
A、To help readers explore learning styles. B、To introduce effective learning methods. C、To arouse readers' curiosity about learning. D、To inform readers of a new scientific study about learning.
  • 20、Many people have an immediate negative reaction to the word fat. But according to a new study, fat tissue (组织) itself is very, very important for health. It's an important place to store the extra energy in our body. Fat tissue is supposed to be stored under the skin. If it can't go there, it's going to other places such as your liver, heart or pancreas (胰腺). More fat in those organs could affect how well they function. Exercising regularly over time makes fat tissue a more accommodating place for extra energy under conditions when we do gain weight.

To see how exercise impacts fat tissue, researchers compared fat tissue just under the skin from two groups of 16 people with overweight problem: those who reported exercising at least four times a week for at least 2 years, and those who did not exercise regularly. People who had a history of regular exercise in the past had fat cells with features that allowed them to store more fat.

Result from the former group showed several structural changes in fat tissue, including slightly smaller fat cells and more of them, and changes in proteins (蛋白质) that adjust body fat remodeling. However, many of the above changes disappeared when regular exercise stopped. Dr. Horowitz, professor of movement studies at the University of Michigan, said, "This is one of the big reasons why it is so important to be physically active most days. A lot of the body's exercises help you to keep going longer or push harder in your works."

The key takeaway of the study is that we're broadening our understanding of why it is helpful to exercise. There are so many ways to exercise, and figuring out a way to make it part of the daily routine plays an important role. Of course, you should check with your doctor first to make sure it's safe.
