 Loss and his colleagues used satellite imagery from 2002 to 2021 to calculate the average start of spring green- up along the typical migration routes of 150 North American bird species, then compared that timing with the current green- up. They found that spring is indeed beginning earlier along birds' migration routes." By contrary, previous studies have mainly focused on songbirds in Eastern North America," says Morgan Tingley, an ornithologist at UCLA," but this new investigation shows that bird species in the West and at different levels of the food web might be just as vulnerable(脆弱的)."

A new T- shirt that continuously monitors heart activity and detects abnormalities may help prevent strokes by identifying dangerous heart conditions like atrial fibrillation (AF). This irregular heart rhythm increases the risk of stroke and affects over a million- people in Britain, with an estimated 500,000 more remaining undiagnosed due to a lack of noticeable symptoms. While some individuals experience signs like chest pain, dizziness, or fatigue, many only discover the condition after suffering a stroke.

 Detecting AF typically involves an electrocardiogram (ECG), performed in a hospital where trained staff attach up to 24 electrodes to different parts of the body. However, since AF often occurs intermittently (间歇地), a short hospital check- up may not detect it. To counter this, doctors sometimes provide patient s with a Holter monitor, a device worn under clothing that records heart activity. However, it's bulky, inconvenient, and requires multiple wires to be attached to the chest, making it uncomfortable for daily wear.

 The Cardioskin T- shirt offers a more practical alternative. Made from cotton and washable up to35 times, it has15 small electrodes woven into the chest area to monitor heart signals continuously. The T- shirt can be worn 24 hours a day, increasing the likelihood of detecting abnormal rhythms. Powered by a removable battery, the electrodes feed data to a microchip, which wirelessly transmits the information to an app. The app converts the data into an easy- to- read chart, highlighting any irregular heart activity.

 The results are then shared with the patient's doctor, allowing for remote monitoring without requiring hospital visits. This innovative design could make diagnosing AF easier and more accessible, potentially reducing the risk of stroke for many.

 Professor Martin Cowie, a cardiologist at Imperial College London, views Cardioskin as an significant development in heart health monitoring, offering a comfortable and efficient tool for early detection of cardiac problems.

A group of children in Zimbabwe, a country in southeast Africa, are closely following a series of martial arts (武术) movements  (perform) in a slow and focused manner accompanied by deep breathing,  their eyes fixed on their Chinese tai chi master.

"Tai chi increases focus and makes students, from school children to college students,  (concentration) on studies." he says. 

Tai chi is a mind-body exercise rooted in multiple Chinese traditions, including martial arts,  (tradition) Chinese medicine and philosophy. It emphasizes a mind-body connection  (use) gentle movements, meditation (冥想) and deep breathing. 

Martial arts  (recognize) as a fitness practice, with a wide range of health benefits. Zhu says tai chi provides mental health benefits like improved focus, as well as decreased stress, anxiety and depression. In addition, it can improve a  (child) confidence and physical strength. 

Organizer of the children's events Abraham Matuka says keeping youngsters busy and entertained with activities like tai chi  (help) meet challenges of drug and other teenager crimes in low-income townships.

The researchers analyzed the running activity of more than a million individuals worldwide who used an exercise tracking device for five years. They used weather patterns as a way to randomly examine different parts of that global network. On average, fine days would encourage people to run more, rainy or cold days less. 

Since different cities have different weather patterns, this natural experiment allowed them to ask: Did a rainy day in New York affect running in San Diego? If the weather in New York caused changes in the running behavior in San Diego, it could possibly happen through peer influences of the friends.  The behavior of one city's runners could indeed affect the behavior of runners in another socially connected city. 

  Women tended to be influenced more by the female runners in their networks And less active runners tended to influence more active runners to run more, but not so much the other way around.  "We have to start thinking about consumers and citizens as networked consumers and citizens. Since they are easily influenced by and influence their social network in very strong and dynamic ways, it will change the way a particular intervention succeeds or fails." Sinan Aral, the leading researcher said.

If you've got more than one kid, you're showing favoritism, whether you know it or not

"Parents may favor one child over another, for a lot of reasons. The child may have an easy temperament (性情) or might behave particularly well or may look like you," says Susan Newman, a psychologist. "But regardless of the reason, every child must be made to feel loved and special, in order to fully develop." Newman warns that favoring one child over their siblings (兄弟姐妹) publicly can have a significantly negative effect. 

"The unfavored child can feel defeated, and unmotivated, as a result of working hard to get parental support, with no success," says Yelena Gidenko, a licensed counselor. "He or she may also suffer from depression and become angry, bitter, or jealous," she adds Children feeling this way may act out, in an effort to get their parent's attention, making matters worse. They may also behave inappropriately, becoming the black sheep, which they believe their parents already see "Unfavored children may have a hard time accepting who they are, since they do not feel accepted by their parents," adds Gidenko. 

Favoritism is not exactly a boon for the favored child, either. Kids who feel that they are their parent's favorite sometimes translate that into a go pass for their behavior in future relationships. "Favored children may feel a sense of entitlement, and that rules do not apply to them," says Gidenko. This can negatively affect the way they act in school, at work, and in their friendships. 

It may seem absurd, but the opposite can also occur. Favored children may experience anxiety and insecurity, resulting from their favorite child status. "Children are observant. They know when they are getting praise for things they have not earned, such as being your favorite. For this reason, they know, and fear, that these things might be taken away from them at any time, for any reason," says Gidenko. 

Newman urges parents to remember that it's not possible to treat children equally because they are all different. What parents can, and should do is talk to their kids about how, and why, they treat them the way they do. "According to research, parents don't talk about this. They don't say why one child gets more time than another. If they do, they are preserving their bond with each child," says Newman. 

I ask every student I interview for admission to my institution, Pitzer College, the same question, "What do you look forward to the most in college?" I was astonished and delighted recently when a student replied, "I look forward to the possibility of failure." Of course, this is not how most students respond to the question when sitting before the person who can make decisions about their academic futures, but this young man took a risk. 

"You see, my parents have never let me fail," he said. "When I want to take a chance at something, they remind me it's not a safe route to take. Taking a more demanding course or trying an activity I may not succeed in, they tell me, will ruin my chances at college admission."

I wish I could tell you this is an uncommon story, but kids all over the world admit they are under great pressure to be perfect. When I was traveling in China last fall and asked a Chinese student what she did for fun, she replied: "I thought I wasn't supposed to tell you that. I wouldn't want you to think I am not serious about my work!"

Students are usually in shock when I laugh and tell them I never expect perfection. Of course, this goes against everything they've been told. How could a dean (院长) of admission at one of America's most selective institutions not want the best and the brightest? The reality is, perfection doesn't exist, and we don't expect to see it in a college application. In fact, admission officers tend to question students who present themselves as individuals without shortcomings. 

We get the most excited when we read an application that seems real. It's so rare to hear stories of defeat. If their perspectives are of lessons learned, these applicants tend to jump to the top at highly selective colleges. We believe an error in high school should not define the rest of your life, but how you respond could shape you forever. 

It's been nearly seven years since a group of volunteers broke ground at What Cheer Flower Farm in Providence, Rhode Island, with a simple goal: get flowers into the hands of anyone in need of a pick-me-up. Best of all, each one of the tens of thousands of bouquets that What Cheer grows and delivers are completely free of charge. 

"We want to blanket the state with flowers and create happiness and joy," says Erin Achenbach, What Cheer's farmer and head florist.

What Cheer regularly delivers joy to people at local hospitals, food banks, senior centers, recovery centers and more-including AIDS Care Ocean State, which provides support to those affected by HIV. 

"Seeing the smiles on people's faces who weren't expecting it—who just came in to have a meeting with their case manager or take advantage of one of our programs—to just see this glow come off their faces is great," says Stephen Hogan Jr. from AIDS Care Ocean State. 

Located in Providence's industrial Olneyville neighborhood, What Cheer's flower beds lie on 2. 7 acres that once housed a knife factory. And it's safe to say that the What Cheer crew is deserving of some flowers of their own: In May, the nonprofit was awarded a record-high$500, 000 grant from the Environmental Protection Agency for its continued revival of a land once abandoned because of industrial pollution. 

"Not only do we give this space back to the neighborhood by bringing life to space that's quite literally dead," says Achenbach, "but we're an eco-landing spot with the ability to help local insect and bird populations, and that'll only make people's lives better." What cheer, indeed! 

"What's good about a flower is that it doesn't need anything else," she adds. "Your only job when someone gives you flowers is to enjoy them."
